An Innovative Preparation, Characterization, and Optimization of Nanocellulose Fibers (NCF) Using Ultrasonic Waves

Recently, environmental and ecological concerns have become a major issue owing to the shortage of resources, high cost, and so forth. In my research, I present an innovative, environmentally friendly, and economical way to prepare nanocellulose from grass wastes with a sodium hypochlorite (NaClO) solution of different concentrations (1−6% mol) at different times 10−80 min, washed with distilled water, and treated with ultrasonic waves. The optimum yield of the isolated cellulose was 95%, 90%, and 87% NaClO at 25 °C for 20 min and with NaOH and H2SO4 at 25 °C with 5% M, respectively. The obtained samples were characterized by dynamic light scattering (DLS), Fourier-transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy, and X-ray diffraction (XRD). The effect of test temperature and reaction times on the crystallinity index (IC) of GNFC with different treated mediums was carried out and investigated. The IC was analyzed using the diffraction pattern and computed according to the Segal empirical method (method A), and the sum of the area under the crystalline adjusted peaks (method B) and their values proved that the effect of temperature is prominent. In both methods, GNFC/H2SO4 had the highest value followed by GNFC/NaOH, GNFC/NaClO and real sample nano fiber cellulose (RSNFC). The infrared spectral features showed no distinct changes of the four cellulose specimens at different conditions. The particle size distribution data proved that low acid concentration hydrolysis was not sufficient to obtain nano-sized cellulose particles. The Zeta potential was higher in accordance with (GNFC/H2SO4 > GNFC/NaOH > GNFC/NaClO), indicating the acid higher effect.

Aspartic Acid Stabilized Iron Oxide Nanoparticles for Biomedical Applications

Aspartic acid stabilized iron oxide nanoparticles (A-IONPs) with globular shape and narrow size distribution were prepared by the co-precipitation method in aqueous medium. A quantum-mechanical approach to aspartic acid optimized structure displayed negative charged sites, relatively high dipole moment, and hydrophilicity, which recommended it for interaction with iron cations and surrounding water electrical dipoles. A-IONPs were characterized by TEM, XRD, ATR-FTIR, EDS, DSC, TG, DLS, NTA, and VSM techniques. Theoretical study carried out by applying Hartree-Fock and density functional algorithms suggested that some aspartic acid properties related to the interaction can develop with nanoparticles and water molecules. The results of experimental investigation showed that the mean value of particle physical diameters was 9.17 ± 2.2 nm according to TEM image analysis, the crystallite size was about 8.9 nm according to XRD data, while the magnetic diameter was about 8.8 nm, as was determined from VSM data interpretation with Langevin's theory. The A-IONP suspension was characterized by zeta-potential of about -11.7 mV, while the NTA investigation revealed a hydrodynamic diameter of 153.9 nm. These results recommend the A-IONP suspension for biomedical applications.

Inhibition of Maillard reaction during alkaline thermal hydrolysis of sludge

The Maillard reaction (MR) occurs during the alkaline thermal hydrolysis (ATH) of sludge, which affects the quantity and quality of recovered protein. In this paper, four different sulfites were added to investigate their inhibitory effects on melanoidin production. The results showed that sulfites inhibited melanoidin production during ATH of sludge and the inhibitory rate increased with their concentration. At a concentration of 5.71 g/L, the inhibitory rates of NaHSO₃ on melanoidin were 63.27%. Furthermore, the 3D-EEM (Three-Dimension Excitation-Emission-Matrix) fluorescence spectroscopy and protein testing data showed that the inhibition of melanoidin production was accompanied by an increased protein concentration, and protein increased with increasing sulfites concentration. A 2.5-fold increase in protein concentration with Na₂S₂O₄ significantly enhanced the quantity of protein recovered. Therefore, the addition of sulfite during ATH of sludge reduces the amount of non-biodegradable melanoidin, which in turn benefits protein recovery.

Influence of Graphene Oxide Additions on the Corrosion Resistance of a Rust Converter Primer

Graphene oxide (GO) has attractive properties, such as a two-dimensional structure. Because of its hydrophilic characteristic, well-dispersed aqueous solutions are attained. Thus, it is easily incorporated into waterborne resins. For these reasons, in the last years GO nanoparticles have been added to polymers, improving corrosion resistance. This work is focused on the performance of a commercial rust converter (RC) doped with five different RC:GO ratios, namely, 1:0; 1:0.3; 1:0.6; 1:0.9; 1:1.2 (%v/v). The X-ray diffraction technique is used to illustrate the effect of RC and RC + GO additions in the iron oxides. Zeta-potential measurements are performed to assess the surface charge of the GO particles. The corrosion resistances of the rusted samples coated with the five rust converter formulations are studied. The electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) technique and an electrical equivalent circuit are utilized to explain the experimental results. Additionally, it is found that the optimal RC:GO ratio is between 1:0.3 and 1:0.6. The better corrosion resistance reached is that of the RC:0.3GO ratio.

Morphology of Ionic Micelles as Studied by Numerical Solution of the Poisson Equation

The existing concepts of the ionic micelle structure were specified. It was noted that the composition of dispersed phase particles in a liquid dispersion medium should necessarily include adsorbed counterions rigidly bound to these particles. By numerical solution of the Poisson equation for the two most often used approximations, the Poisson-Boltzmann (PB) model and the Jellium-approximation (JA), the electric potential decay from the Stern potential of dispersed phase particles was defined. A new methodological approach to analyze the reaction of micelle potential decay based on small variability of the CMC value was proposed. It made possible to determine the dimension parameter, which in the presence of weak thermal effects approximately corresponds to the micelle hydrodynamic radius, and to calculate the electrokinetic potential of micelles. The results of theoretical calculations were compared with our previous experimental data on the thickness of the SDS micelle hydrophilic layer obtained by SAXS. A good agreement between the calculated and measured values was obtained, and it was noted that for low concentrations the experimental values are more correctly described by the PB model, but for concentrations greater than 100 mM the JA model is more preferable. It was found that the slipping plane is located near the outer Stern plane and is separated from it only by a few molecular layers of water. The influence stronger than the thermal one can shift the slipping plane closer to the micelle core. Accordingly, the smallest hydrodynamic micelle size is determined by the outer Stern plane. The results of our work allowed us to conclude that the micelle is not something soft and watery, but according to its specified structure, it is a more solid-like particle than was previously assumed. The proposed approach can be extended to investigate other effects of a physicochemical nature, in particular, those observed with the addition of an external electrolyte or nanoparticles.

Yb3+-Doped Two-Dimensional Upconverting Tb-MOF Nanosheets with Luminescence Sensing Properties

In this article, we synthesized a Yb³⁺-doped two-dimensional (2-D) upconverting Tb metal-organic framework (Tb-MOF) (hereinafter referred to as Tb-UCMOF) by a one-step solvothermal method. The synthesized Tb-UCMOF is composed of stacks of 2-D nanosheets with an average width distributed between 250 and 300 nm, and these nanosheets can be exfoliated by a simple liquid ultrasound method. The structural characteristics of this flaky particle accumulation are confirmed by the type IV adsorption-desorption isotherm with a H₃-type adsorption hysteresis loop, and the Brunauer-Emmett-Teller surface of Tb-UCMOF is 143.9257 m²·g^-1. Tb-UCMOF has characteristic emissions of Tb³⁺ which are located at 490, 545, 585, and 621 nm under 980 nm excitation. The upconverting luminescence mechanism is attributed to that Yb³⁺ absorbs multiple photons and transfers the energy to Tb³⁺, causing its 4f electrons to jump to the excited state, and then the upconverting emissions are obtained when electrons return to the ground state. Since the Tb-UCMOF nanosheets have high dispersibility and an obvious upconverting luminescent signal, we explored their luminescence sensing properties. The luminescence intensity is found to gradually decrease with the addition of Cu²⁺, the linear range of Cu²⁺ sensing is 0-1.4 μM, and the detection limit is 0.16 μM. This rapid, highly selective, and sensitive Cu²⁺ sensing indicates that 2-D upconverting MOF nanosheets have great application prospects in luminescence sensing and also promote the research of 2-D upconverting MOFs with specific recognition for the application of biological and environmental luminescent sensors.

A Review on Thermophysical Property Assessment of Metal Oxide-Based Nanofluids: Industrial Perspectives

Energy consumption in the industrial sector can be significantly reduced by improving heat transfer rates in heat exchanger circuits, pool boiling, metal cutting industries, etc. Numerous energy-related issues can be overcome to a large extent by improving heat flow properties by utilizing nanofluids. The present contribution reviews the improvement in thermophysical properties of metal oxide-based nanofluids. Key parameters affecting the thermophysical properties of nanofluids, such as particle volume fraction, temperature, particle size and various stabilizers, were reviewed. The importance of DLVO theory and zeta potential to control the electrostatic repulsion and pH values of nanofluids for stable nanofluid formulations were discussed. It has been observed that classical theories of thermal conductivity and viscosity cannot predict exact values for a wide range of variables. Therefore, various extensive correlations have been introduced to predict the thermophysical properties of nanofluids. In these correlations, individual dependent variables such as particle size, temperature, nanofluid layer thickness, and Brownian velocity of nanoparticles, etc. were considered for more accurate prediction. The heat transfer efficiencies of nanofluids to base fluids in the laminar and turbulent regimes have been discussed using various figures of merits. Finally, the scope of industrial applications of metal oxide-based nanofluids and future research opportunities have been discussed.

Pilot-scale hybrid system combining hydrodynamic cavitation and sedimentation for the decolorization of industrial inks and printing ink wastewater

A pilot-scale hydrodynamic cavitation (HC) system followed by sedimentation (SED) was used for the decolorization of 5 industrial-grade inks, a fluid containing a mixture of the five industrial grade inks (MIX) and printing ink wastewater (PIW). The pilot scale HC reactor combines a Venturi tube with a 31 holes orifice plate accommodated in the vena-contracta of Venturi. The study aimed to define optimal operating conditions, i.e., hydrogen peroxide concentration (H₂O₂), pH and combined HC/SED treatment time, to achieve decolorization and reduce HC operation time. Under the optimal conditions at the proposed HC/SED system, color removal reached 92%, 91%, 90%,98% and 90%, for black, red, yellow, cyan, and green ink respectively (at pH 8 without H₂O₂ addition). In the same system, color removal for PIW was 92%, whereas for MIX decolorization reached more than 90% for all the wavelengths in the selected spectrum 300-700 nm at HC/SED system (at pH 8 and 1 g L^-1 hydrogen peroxide). The suspended particles were characterized by measurements of the particle size distribution and of the respective zeta potential. The equivalent cavitation yields, electric energy consumption and operating costs were calculated. The present work's results suggested that HC combined with sedimentation has a great potential for real applications and is superior compared to other technologies (i.e., H₂O₂ alone, sedimentation alone or even HC with or without H₂O).

Nanoparticles use for Delivering Ursolic Acid in Cancer Therapy: A Scoping Review

Ursolic acid is a natural pentacyclic triterpenoid that exerts a potent anticancer effect. Furthermore, it is classified as a BCS class IV compound possessing low permeability and water solubility, consequently demonstrating limited bioavailability in addition to low therapeutic effectiveness. Nanoparticles are developed to modify the physical characteristics of drug and can often be produced in the range of 30–200 nm, providing highly effective cancer therapy due to the Enhanced Permeation and Retention (EPR) Effect. This study aims to provide a review of the efficacy and safety of various types of Ursolic Acid-loading nanoparticles within the setting of preclinical and clinical anticancer studies. This literature study used scoping review method, where the extracted data must comply with the journal inclusion criteria of within years of 2010–2020. The identification stage produced 237 suitable articles. Duplicate screening was then conducted followed by the initial selection of 18 articles that had been reviewed and extracted for data analysis. Based on this review, the use of nanoparticles can be seen to increase the anticancer efficacy of Ursolic Acid in terms of several parameters including pharmacokinetic data, survival rates and inhibition rates, as well as the absence of serious toxicity in preclinical and clinical trials in terms of several parameters including body weight, blood clinical chemistry, and organ histipathology. Based on this review, the use of nanoparticles has been able to increase the anticancer efficacy of Ursolic Acid, as well as show the absence of serious toxicity in preclinical and clinical trials. Evenmore, the liposome carrier provides development data that has reached the clinical trial phase I. The use of nanoparticle provides high potential for Ursolic Acid delivery in cancer therapy.

Microwave synthesis of upconverting nanoparticles with bis(2-ethylhexyl) adipate

A mixture of bis(2-ethylhexyl) adipate and oleic acid provides scale-up potential and speedy heating rates in the microwave-assisted organic synthesis of upconverting nanoparticles with tunable size, crystallinity, and hydrophilic character.

Development and Thermophysical Profile of Cetyl Alcohol-in-Water Nanoemulsions for Thermal Management

This study focuses on the preparation, thermophysical and rheological characterization of phase change material nanoemulsions as latent functionally thermal fluids. Aqueous dispersions with fine droplets of cetyl alcohol (with a melting temperature at ~321 K) were prepared by means of a solvent-assisted method, combining ultrasonication with non-ionic and anionic emulsifiers. Eicosyl alcohol (melting at ~337 K) and hydrophobic silica nanoparticles were tested as nucleating agents. Droplet size studies through time and after freeze–thaw cycles confirmed the good stability of formulated nanoemulsions. Phase change analyses proved the effectiveness of eicosyl alcohol to reduce subcooling to a few Kelvin. Although phase change material emulsions exhibited thermal conductivities much larger than bulk cetyl alcohol (at least 60% higher when droplets are solid), reductions in this property reached 15% when compared to water. Samples mainly showed desirable Newtonian behavior (or slight shear thinning viscosities) and modifications in density around melting transition were lower than 1.2%. In the case of phase change material nanoemulsions with 8 wt.% content of dispersed phase, enhancements in the energy storage capacity overcome 20% (considering an operational temperature interval of 10 K around solid–liquid phase change). Formulated dispersions also showed good thermal reliability throughout 200 solidification–melting cycles.

The Analysis of Chitosan-Coated Nanovesicles Containing Erythromycin-Characterization and Biocompatibility in Mice

Nanoantibiotics have proved improved pharmacokinetic characteristics and antimicrobial features. Recent studies have shown non-toxicity, non-immunogenicity, antioxidant, anti-hyperlipidemic, and hepatocyte protective actions, among other advantages of chitosan-based nanoparticles. The purpose of our study was the structural analysis of novel chitosan-coated vesicles entrapping erythromycin (ERT) and the assessment of their biocompatibility in mice. According to the group in which they were randomly assigned, the mice were treated orally with one of the following: distilled water; chitosan; ERT; chitosan vesicles containing ERT. Original nanosystems entrapping ERT in liposomes stabilized with chitosan were designed. Their oral administration did not produce sizeable modifications in the percentages of the leukocyte formula elements, of some blood constants useful for evaluating the hepatic and renal function, respectively, and of some markers of oxidative stress and immune system activity, which suggests a good biocompatibility in mice. The histological examination did not reveal significant alterations of liver and kidney architecture in mice treated with chitosan liposomes entrapping ERT. The results indicate the designed liposomes are a promising approach to overcome disadvantages of conventional ERT treatments and to amplify their benefits and can be further studied as carrier systems.
