Abstract
Poly(2-ethyl-2-oxazoline) (PEOX) of various molecular weights were covalently immobilized on silicon wafers and gold slides to form protein-resistant surfaces via a fast and general photocoupling chemistry based on the CH insertion reaction of light-activated perfluorophenyl azide (PFPA). The thicknesses of the immobilized PEOX films ranged from 23 to 80 Å for molecular weight of 5000 to 500,000, and the grafting density reached 3.2 × 10(-3) Å(-2) for PEOX 5000. The protein-resistant property of the films was studied using bovine serum albumin (BSA) by fluorescence imaging, ellipsometry, and surface plasmon resonance imaging (SPRi). The fluorescence imaging and ellipsometry studies showed the largest amount of BSA adsorbed on PEOX 5000 and the smallest on PEOX 500,000. This was consistent with the kinetic analysis of BSA adsorption by SPRi showing that PEOX 5000 exhibited the fastest association rate and the slowest dissociation rate whereas PEOX 500,000 had the slowest association rate and the fastest dissociation rate. The PEOX film was then applied in the fabrication of carbohydrate microarrays to reduce the nonspecific adsorption of lectins and thus the background noises. Results showed that the microarray signals were significantly enhanced when the PEOX film was used.

Abstract
2-Oxazolines (2-OZO) are 5-membered cyclic imino ethers whose cationic ring-opening polymerization (CROP) mechanism and resulting polymer properties are extensively studied. However, also 6- and 7-membered cyclic imino ethers can be polymerized via CROP. Together with the much less studied 4- and 5-substituted main-chain chiral poly(2-oxazoline)s (P-2-OZO), these compounds are interesting monomers to enhance the versatility of (co)poly(cyclic imino ether)s. To emphasize the potential of such alternative cyclic imino ether monomers, we provide an overview on the polymerizations of 2-oxazine (2-OZI) and chiral 4- and 5-substituted 2-OZO as well as of selected properties of the resulting polymers. In addition, the hydrolysis of these polymers into the corresponding poly(alkylene imine)s will be addressed.

Abstract
A method using supercritical CO(2) to obtain biocompatible 2-oxazoline-based oligomers quaternized with different amines is described. The synthesized oligo(2-oxazoline)s display partial carbamic-acid insertion at one end. The syntheses of quaternary oligo(2-bisoxazoline)s and linear oligoethylenimine hydrochlorides are reported. Oligo(2-methyl-2-oxazoline) and oligo(2-bisoxazoline) quaternized with N,N-dimethyldodecylamine are the most efficient biocidal agents showing fast killing rates against Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli. Linear oligoethylenimine hydrochloride shows the lowest MIC values but higher killing times against both bacteria. Based on the antimicrobial activity studies, a cooperative action of carbamic acid with the ammonium end group is proposed.

Abstract
The synthesis of star-shaped poly(2-ethyl-2-oxazoline) is reported by direct end-capping of the living polymer chains with dendritic multiamines. The end-capping kinetics after addition of a first generation polypropylenimine dendrimer are discussed based on monitoring by size exclusion chromatography, revealing less efficient end-capping with larger poly(2-ethyl-2-oxazoline) chains and increasing dendrimer generation. In addition, it is demonstrated that the solution viscosity and cloud point temperature of the star-shaped polymers are much less affected by chain length compared with their linear analogues.

Abstract
The synthesis of well-defined polymer architectures is of major importance for the development of complex functional materials. In this contribution, we discuss the synthesis of a range of multifunctional star-shaped tosylates as potential initiators for the living cationic ring-opening polymerization (CROP) of 2-oxazolines resulting in star-shaped polymers. The synthesis of the tosylates was performed by esterification of the corresponding alcohols with tosyl chloride. Recrystallization of these tosylate compounds afforded single crystals, and the X-ray crystal structures of di-, tetra- and hexa-tosylates are reported. The use of tetra- and hexa-tosylates, based on (di)pentaerythritol as initiators for the CROP of 2-ethyl-2-oxazoline, resulted in very slow initiation and ill-defined polymers, which is most likely caused by steric hindrance in these initiators. As a consequence, a porphyrin-cored tetra-tosylate initiator was prepared, which yielded a well-defined star-shaped poly(2-ethyl-2-oxazoline) by CROP as demonstrated by SEC with RI, UV and diode-array detectors, as well as by ¹H NMR spectroscopy.

Abstract
The microwave-assisted statistical terpolymerization of 2-oxazolines via a living cationic ring-opening polymerization mechanism is discussed. Kinetic investigations on the terpolymerizations of combinations of 2-methyl-2-oxazoline, 2-ethyl-2-oxazoline, 2-nonyl-2-oxazoline, and 2-phenyl-2-oxazoline were performed by heating separate polymerization mixtures for different predefined times. The resulting polymer solutions were analyzed by gas chromatography and size exclusion chromatography, demonstrating the living character of the statistical terpolymerizations. In addition, the monomer distribution throughout the polymer chains is discussed based on the linear first order kinetic plots of the separate monomers in the terpolymerizations. The observed differences in monomer distribution are expected to influence the polymer properties, which will be the focus of future investigations.
