Co9 S8 /MoS2 Yolk-Shell Spheres for Advanced Li/Na Storage

Improved Electrochemical Performance Based on Nanostructured SnS2@CoS2-rGO Composite Anode for Sodium-Ion Batteries

A promising anode material composed of SnS₂@CoS₂ flower-like spheres assembled from SnS₂ nanosheets and CoS₂ nanoparticles accompanied by reduced graphene oxide (rGO) was fabricated by a facile hydrothermal pathway. The presence of rGO and the combined merits of SnS₂ and CoS₂ endow the SnS₂@CoS₂-rGO composite with high conductivity pathways and channels for electrons and with excellent properties as an anode material for sodium-ion batteries (SIBs). A high capacity of 514.0 mAh g^-1 at a current density of 200 mA g^-1 after 100 cycles and a good rate capability can be delivered. The defined structure and good sodium-storage performance of the SnS₂@CoS₂-rGO composite demonstrate its promising application in high-performance SIBs.

Electrochemical Investigation of Natural Ore Molybdenite (MoS2) as a First-Hand Anode for Lithium Storages

Considering serious pollution from the traditional chemical synthesis process, the resource-rich, clean, and first-hand electrode materials are greatly desired. Natural ore molybdenite (MoS₂), as the low-cost, high-yield, and environmental-friendly natural source, is investigated as a first-hand anode material for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). Compared with chemosynthetic pure MoS₂, natural molybdenite provides an ordered ion diffusion channel more effectively owing to its excellent characteristics, containing well-crystalline, large lattice distance, and trance dopants. Even at a large current density of 2.0 A g^-1, a natural molybdenite electrode employing a carboxymethyl cellulose binder displays an initial charge capacity of 1199 mA h g^-1 with a capacity retention of 72% after 1000 cycles, much higher than those of the electrodes utilizing a poly(vinylidene fluoride) binder. These types of binders play a crucial role in stabilizing a microstructure demonstrated by ex situ scanning electron microscopy and in affecting pseudocapacitive contributions quantitatively determined by a series of kinetic exploration. Briefly, this work might open up a new avenue toward the use of natural molybdenite as a first-hand LIB anode in scalable applications and deepen our understanding on the fundamental effect of binders in the metal-sulfide.

An open holey structure enhanced rate capability in a NaTi2(PO4)3/C nanocomposite and provided ultralong-life sodium-ion storage

Sodium-ion battery (SIB) technology is competitive in the fields of transportation and grid storage, which require electrode materials showing rapid energy conversion (high rate capability) and long cycle life. In this work, a NaTi₂(PO₄)₃/C (NTP/C) nanocomposite with an open holey-structured framework was successfully prepared for the first time using a solvothermal reaction followed by pyrolysis. The nanocomposite realized fast sodium-ion transport and thus preferable battery performances. Within the wide rate range of 0.5-50C, only a very small decrease in capacity from 124 to 120 mA h g^-1 was observed. A high discharge capacity of 103 mA h g^-1 (88.3% retention of the 1st cycle) was delivered even after 10 000 cycles at an ultrahigh rate of 50C without any obvious morphological change and without structural pulverization. Forming open channels for ion transport proved to contribute to such performance enhancement and therefore has the potential to become a universal model for the development of sustainable electrode materials in SIBs and other battery systems.

A Review: Enhanced Anodes of Li/Na-Ion Batteries Based on Yolk-Shell Structured Nanomaterials

Lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) and sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) have received much attention in energy storage system. In particular, among the great efforts on enhancing the performance of LIBs and SIBs, yolk-shell (YS) structured materials have emerged as a promising strategy toward improving lithium and sodium storage. YS structures possess unique interior void space, large surface area and short diffusion distance, which can solve the problems of volume expansion and aggregation of anode materials, thus enhancing the performance of LIBs and SIBs. In this review, we present a brief overview of recent advances in the novel YS structures of spheres, polyhedrons and rods with controllable morphology and compositions. Enhanced electrochemical performance of LIBs and SIBs based on these novel YS structured anode materials was discussed in detail.

Scalable synthesis of SnS2/S-doped graphene composites for superior Li/Na-ion batteries

Tin disulfide (SnS₂) has emerged as a promising anode material for lithium/sodium ion batteries (LIBs/SIBs) due to its unique layered structure, outstanding electrochemical properties and low cost. However, its poor cycling life and time-consuming synthesis as well as low-yield production hinder the practical utilization of nanostructured SnS₂. In this work, we demonstrate a simple and reliable dissolution-regeneration strategy to construct a flexible SnS₂/sulfur-doped reduced graphene oxide (S-rGO) composite as anodes for LIBs and SIBs, highlighting its mass-production feature. In addition, the robust affinity between SnS₂ and S-rGO without interstitial volume is very beneficial for preventing the SnS₂ particles from breaking themselves away from the rGO nanosheets into free nanoparticles. As a result, the SnS₂/S-rGO composite as anodes delivers high reversible capacities of 1078 mA h g^-1 and 564 mA h g^-1 (at 0.1 A g^-1) for LIBs and SIBs, respectively, and excellent rate capabilities and cycling stability (e.g. 532 mA h g^-1 during the 600 cycles at 5.0 A g^-1 for LIBs). Our proposed strategy may also possess great potential for the practical application of other electrochemically active metal sulfide composites for energy devices.

MoO2 nanosheets embedded in amorphous carbon matrix for sodium-ion batteries

MoO2 nanosheets embedded in the amorphous carbon matrix (MoO2/C) are successfully synthesized via a facile hydrothermal method and investigated as an anode for sodium-ion batteries. Because of the efficient ion transport channels and good volume change accommodation, MoO2/C delivers a discharge/charge capacity of 367.8/367.0 mAh g-1 with high coulombic efficiency (99.4%) after 100 cycles at a current density of 50 mA g-1.
