Gambling among adolescents

Gambling onset during adolescence has been the subject of recent articles in the lay press. This study reports on the incidence of gambling in adolescents. There were 97 males (48.7%) and 102 females (51.3%) between the ages of 12 and 18 years. The mean age of the gamblers was 15.12 +/- 1.83 (SEM), and of the nongamblers 14.36 +/- 1.78. Eighty-three percent of the males and 61% of the females reported gambling. Forty-four percent of those who gambled, but only 26% of the nongamblers, reported having at least one parent who gambled. Our study confirms the high incidence of gambling by teenagers. Of concern is the potential link between gambling and other risk-taking or addictive behaviors. Perhaps we should include gambling as part of our anticipatory guidance for adolescents.

Treatment of pathological gamblers: an experimental study

The efficacy of a behavioral treatment for pathological gamblers, including cognitive interventions, problem solving and relapse prevention is examined. Three pathological gamblers meeting DSM-III-R criteria were studied in an experimental multiple baseline design. By the end of treatment the subjects ceased all gambling behaviors, increased their perception of self-control of gambling, and evaluated their problems as less severe. Therapeutic gains were maintained at 6- and 9-month follow-ups. The importance of problem solving and the modification of erroneous perceptions in treatment programs for pathological gambling is discussed.

Prevalence of pathological gambling and related problems among college students in the Quebec metropolitan area

The prevalence of pathological gambling and problems associated with it were measured among 1,471 students of three colleges in the Quebec city metropolitan area. Almost 90% of the students had gambled and 21.7% of the students engage in this behaviour once a week or more. The prevalence of pathological gamblers was found to be 2.8% for the entire sample. The percentage of pathological gamblers was much higher among males (5.7%) than females (0.6%). The results indicate that pathological gambling is associated with economic, professional and interpersonal problems. The discussion addresses the implications of the present findings and suggests avenues for future research.

Cognitive-behavioral treatment for adolescent pathological gamblers

This study evaluated the effectiveness of a cognitive-behavioral treatment for adolescent pathological gamblers. Perception of control and severity of the problem served as dependent variables. Four adolescent pathological gamblers meeting DSM-III-R criteria were treated in a multiple baseline design across individuals. Results showed clinically significant changes for all subjects; they remained abstinent at 1-, 4-, and 6-month follow-ups. The clinical implications of these results are discussed.

Epidemiology of pathological gambling in Edmonton

Thirty lifetime pathological gamblers (DSM-III, no exclusion criteria) were identified when 7,214 randomly selected household residents of Edmonton were interviewed by trained lay interviewers using the Diagnostic Interview Schedule. The lifelong prevalence of pathological gambling was 0.42% (ratio of males to females 3:1). The peak age of onset was 25 to 29 years. Gamblers had high rates of comorbidity with other psychiatric disorders. They were likely to have made suicide attempts (13.3%), to have been convicted of offences (26.7%), to be spouse and child abusers (23.3% and 16.7% respectively) and to have spent long periods unemployed (40%). In addition, 80% had trouble at home or work because of gambling, and 60% borrowed or stole to gamble.

Prevalence estimates of pathological gambling in Quebec

Pathological gambling was officially defined and recognized as a psychiatric illness by the American Psychiatric Association in 1980. This survey reports the results of a province-wide study in Quebec based on telephone interviews using standardized assessment instruments with 1,002 subjects. The current prevalence of pathological gambling is 1.2%. The results also show that 88% of the respondents have gambled at least once in their life. The implications of these results for the prevention and treatment of this debilitating disorder are discussed.

Gambling and pathological gambling among university students

Students from six colleges and universities in five states in the U.S. (New York, New Jersey, Oklahoma, Texas, and Nevada) were surveyed concerning their gambling behavior and the rate of pathological gambling. Type of gambling varied by state, with students in the northeast and Nevada gambling more than students in Oklahoma and Texas. Over 90% of males and 82% of females had gambled. One third of the males and 15% of females gambled once a week or more. Rates of pathological gambling ranged from 8% in New York to 4% in Nevada. The incidence of pathological gambling was high among males, Hispanics, Asians, and Italian-Americans (compared with among other whites), students with non-traffic arrests, those with parents who have gambling problems, and those who abuse alcohol and other drugs. Pathological gambling was only weakly correlated with age, religion, lower grade point average in school, overeating, living in neighborhoods that are "poorer than most," family income, and parental drug use. It was not correlated with academic year in college, marital status, parental occupation, parental alcohol, and bulimic behavior. The implications of the findings for further research and social policy are discussed.
