Abstract
Microalgae are sources of nutritional products and biofuels. However, their economical processing is challenging, because of (i) the inherently low concentration of biomass in algal cultures, below 0.5%, (ii) the high-water content in the harvested biomass, above 70%; and (iii) the variable intracellular content and composition. Cell wall structure and strength vary enormously among microalgae, from naked Dunaliella cells to robust Haematococcus cysts. High-value products justify using fast and energy-intensive processes, ranging from 0.23 kWh/kg dry biomass in high-pressure homogenization, to 6 kWh/kg dry biomass in sonication. However, in biofuels production, the energy input must be minimized, requiring slower, thermal or chemical pretreatments. Whichever the primary fraction of interest, the spent biomass can be processed into valuable by-products. This review discusses microalgal cell structure and composition, how it affects pretreatment, focusing on technologies tested for large scale or promising for industrial processes, and how these can be integrated into algal biorefineries.

Abstract
The present study describes the variation in lipid components from 15 species of seaweeds belonging to the Chlorophyta, Ochrophyta, and Rhodophyta phyla collected in tropical (Indonesia) and temperate (Japan) areas. Analyses were performed of multiple components, including chlorophylls, carotenoids, n-3 and n-6 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs), and alpha tocopherol (α-Toc). Chlorophyll (Chl) and carotenoid contents varied among phyla, but not with the sampling location. Chl a and b were the major chlorophylls in Chlorophyta. Chl a and Chl c were the main chlorophylls in Ochrophyta, while Chl a was the dominant chlorophylls in Rhodophyta. β-Carotene and fucoxanthin were detected as major seaweed carotenoids. The former was present in all species in a variety of ranges, while the latter was mainly found in Ochrophyta and in small quantities in Rhodophyta, but not in Chlorophyta. The total lipids (TL) content and fatty acids composition were strongly affected by sampling location. The TL and n-3 PUFAs levels tended to be higher in temperate seaweeds compared with those in tropical seaweeds. The major n-3 PUFAs in different phyla, namely, eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and stearidonic acid (SDA) in Ochrophyta, α-linolenic acid (ALA) and SDA in Chlorophyta, and EPA in Rhodophyta, accumulated in temperate seaweeds. Chlorophylls, their derivatives, and carotenoids are known to have health benefits, such as antioxidant activities, while n-3 PUFAs are known to be essential nutrients that positively influence human nutrition and health. Therefore, seaweed lipids could be used as a source of ingredients with health benefits for functional foods and nutraceuticals.

Abstract
Microalgae have been used as natural ingredients to produce functional and nutritional food products. The impact of the addition of Chlorella minutissima, Isochrysis galbana, and Picochlorum sp. at concentrations of 0.5, 1, and 1.5% w/v on the texture and sensory attributes of canned burgers were investigated. The results show that carp formulations containing 1% microalgae show significantly better classification performance for many textural and sensory parameters compared to the rest of the formulations. Also, these treatments had higher swelling ability as well as water and oil holding capacities, thanks to the important dietary fiber and polysaccharide contents found in microalgae. Moreover, microalgae-supplemented burgers were characterized as having low a* and b* values, which made the color appear to be pale orange. Additionally, thanks to its richness in pigments and polysaccharides, microalgae considerably ameliorated the antioxidant activities of the new prepared fish burgers. Thus, microalgae could be used as natural and nutritious ingredient to develop new fish-based products.

Abstract
BACKGROUND To overcome the daunting technical and economic barriers of algal biofuels, we evaluated whether seawater can be a viable medium for economically producing filamentous Spirulina subsalsa as feedstock, using monosodium glutamate residue (MSGR) produced by the glutamate extraction process as an inexpensive nutrient source. RESULTS Spirulina subsalsa cannot grow in pure seawater, but exhibited faster biomass accumulation in seawater supplemented with MSGR than in freshwater medium (modified Zarrouk medium). Introducing seawater into media ensured this cyanobacterium obtained high lipid productivity (120 mg/L/day) and suffered limited bacterial infections during growth. Moreover, the yields of protein, carotenoids and phytols were also improved in seawater mixed with MSGR. S. subsalsa exhibited high biomass and lipid productivity in bag bioreactors with 5- and 10-L medium, demonstrating the potential of this cultivation method for scaling up. Moreover, seawater can produce more biomass through medium reuse. Reused seawater medium yielded 72% of lipid content compared to pristine medium. The reason that S. subsalsa grew well in seawater with MSGR is its proficient adaptation to salinity, which included elongation and desaturation of fatty acids, accumulation of lysine and methionine, and secretion of sodium. The nutrients provided by MSGR, like organic materials, played an important role in these responses. CONCLUSION Spirulina subsalsa has an efficient system to adapt to saline ambiance in seawater. When supplemented with MSGR, seawater is a great potential medium to produce S. subsalsa in large scale as biofuel feedstock. Meanwhile, value-added products can be derived from the ample protein and pigments that can broaden the range of biomass application and improve this biorefinery economics.

Abstract
Abstract There is a paucity of information about the chemical composition of commercially important freshwater fish species (Nile tilapia, bighead carp, grass carp, common carp and silver carp) cultivated in the western region of Santa Catarina, Brazil. This study determined the moisture, ash, protein and lipid contents and the fatty acid composition, as well as the nutritional quality of the lipids in fillets of these five freshwater fish species. Moisture was the most prominent fish component (74.7%-81.7%), followed by protein (15.8%-18.8%) and lipids (0.4%-8.2%). Saturated palmitic acid (90-1740 mg/100 g) and monounsaturated oleic acid (70-2260 mg/100 g) were the major fatty acids found in all the fish species. The grass and common carps and Nile tilapia (caged) had high contents of γ-linolenic acid (GLA), with an average of 536 mg/100 g. Bighead carp was the richest source of ω-3 PUFA, mainly eicosapentaenoic (EPA, 400 mg/100 g) and docosahexaenoic (DHA, 620 mg/100 g) acids, and had the highest ω-3/ω-6 ratio of 6.11. The nutritional evaluation of the fatty acid profile indicated that average values were: atherogenicity index (AI) ~0.59, thrombogenicity index (TI) ~0.82, hypocholesterolemic/hypercholesterolemic ratio (H/H ~1.98), polyunsaturated/saturated ratio (P/S) ~0.43 and ω-3/ω-6 ratio ~2.18, values suggesting that the consumption of these freshwater fish species could be of benefit to human health.

Abstract
The exploration of new food sources and natural products is the result of the increase in world population as well as the need for a healthier diet; in this context, microalgae are undoubtedly an interesting solution. With the intent to enhance their value in new commercial applications, this paper aims to characterize microalgae that have already been recognized as safe or authorized as additives for humans and animals (Chlorella vulgaris, Arthrospira platensis, Haematococcus pluvialis, Dunaliella salina) as well as those that have not yet been marketed (Scenedesmus almeriensis and Nannocholoropsis sp.). In this scope, the content of proteins, carbohydrates, lipids, total dietary fiber, humidity, ash, and carotenoids has been measured via standard methods. In addition, individual carotenoids (beta-carotene, astaxanthin, and lutein) as well as individual saturated, monounsaturated, and polyunsaturated fatty acids have been identified and quantified chromatographically. The results confirm the prerogative of some species to produce certain products such as carotenoids, polyunsaturated fatty acids, and proteins, but also show how their cellular content is rich and diverse. H. pluvialis green and red phases, and Nannochloropsis sp., in addition to producing astaxanthin and omega-3, contain about 25⁻33% w/w proteins on a dry basis. D. salina is rich in beta-carotene (3.45% w/w on a dry basis), S. Almeriensis is a source of lutein (0.30% w/w on a dry basis), and the C. vulgaris species is a protein-based microalgae (45% w/w on a dry basis). All, however, can also produce important fatty acids such as palmitic acid, γ-linolenic acid, and oleic acid. Considering their varied composition, these microalgae can find applications in multiple sectors. This is true for microalgae already on the market as well as for promising new sources of bioproducts such as S. almeriensis and Nannochloropsis sp.

Abstract
Algae with potential biotechnological applications in different industries are commonly isolated from the environment in order to obtain pure (axenic) stocks that can be safely stored for long periods of time. To obtain axenic cultures, antibiotics are frequently employed, and cryopreservation is applied to preserve standing stocks. However, many of these now standard methods were developed using strains derived from pristine to near-pristine environments and cold to temperate regions. The potential effect of the said methods on the life cycle and biochemical profile of algae isolates from hyper-eutrophic and constant high-temperature tropical regions is not well understood. These effects could potentially render them unsuitable for their intended biotechnological application. In this study, we conducted a genetic characterization (18S rRNA) and evaluated the effect of purification (the use of the antibiotic chloramphenicol, CAP) and cryopreservation (dimethyl sulfoxide; DMSO–sucrose mix and glycerol) on the growth rate and lipid content of three new tropical freshwater algal isolates: Chorella sp. M2, Chlorella sp. M6, and Scenedesmus sp. R3, obtained from the Ecuadorian coast. The genetic and morphological characterization revealed a clear discrimination between these strains. All strains cultured with CAP exhibited a lower growth rate. Subsequent to cryopreservation, Chorella sp. M2, Chlorella sp. M6, and Scenedesmus sp. R3 presented no significant difference in growth rate between the cryopreservants. Further, a significantly higher lipid content was observed in the biomass cryopreserved with glycerol in relation to the DMSO–sucrose, with Chorella sp. M2 and Chlorella sp. M6 having twice as much as they had in the first treatment. These results highlight the relevance of selecting an appropriate method for storage, as the materials used can affect the biological performance of different tropical species, although it is still to be determined if the effects observed in this study are long lasting in subsequent cultures of these algae.

Abstract
The chemical composition of 16 microalgae products of four genera, Arthrospira (n = 2), Chlorella (n = 8), Nannochloropsis (n = 4) and Phaeodactylum (n = 2), was assayed to evaluate the intra- and inter-genera variation of nutrient profiles of commercial microalgae products. Crude protein was the main component in all genera, followed by ether extract and crude ash. Mean crude protein concentrations were 690, 502, 431 and 446 g/kg dry matter, and mean ether extract concentrations were 63, 157, 188 and 113 g/kg dry matter for Arthrospira, Chlorella, Nannochloropsis and Phaeodactylum respectively. However, there was considerable inter- and intra-genera variation. The concentration of α-linked glucose was low (0-143 g/kg dry matter). There was high variation between and within genera in the crude ash concentration (22-237 g/kg dry matter), which was also observed for the mineral composition. In contrast to the crude protein concentration, the amino acid composition of the protein (g amino acid/16 g N) was less variable. The investigated samples possessed high concentrations of Glx, Asx and Leu, and low concentrations of Cys and Met. The mean concentration of non-protein nitrogen compounds was highest in Phaeodactylum (110 g/kg dry matter) and lowest in Nannochloropsis (47 g/kg dry matter) products, and as with proximate nutrients, high variability between and within genera was observed. In vitro crude protein digestibility varied between 54% (non-cell-disrupted Nannochloropsis) and 84% (cell-disrupted Chlorella). Inositol phosphate isomers were not detectable in any sample (concentration <1 μmol/g dry matter). The predominant fatty acids were C16:0 in Arthrospira products, C18:2 n-6+ C19:1 t7 and C18:3 n-3 in Chlorella products, and C20:5 n-3 in Nannochloropsis and Phaeodactylum products; however, the relative proportions of fatty acids varied within genera. Commercially available microalgae products appear to be valuable alternative food and feed products. However, because of the high variability in nutrient profiles, attention should be given to the analytical characterization of the products.

Abstract
The main objective of this study was to evaluate the suitability of Nannochloropsis gaditana to grow by sequential adaptation to TOPW (Table olive processing water) at increased substrate concentrations (10-80%). Sequential adaptation allows growing Nannochloropsis gaditana up to 80% TOPW, although the maximum microalgae biomass productions were achieved for percentages of 20-40%, i.e. 0.308 ± 0.005 g VSS (Volatile Suspended Solids)/L. In all growth experiments, proteins were the majority compound in the grown microalgae biomass (0.44 ± 0.05 g/g VSS), whereas phenols were retained up to a mean concentration of 12.1 ± 1.9 mg total phenols/g VSS. The highest microalgae biomass production rate at rate of 80% TOPW took place in the first two days when most nutrients were also removed. Average removal efficiencies at this percentage of TOPW were 69.1%, 50.9%, 54.3% and 71.8% for total organic carbon, total soluble nitrogen, phosphate and total phenols, respectively. Sequential adaptation can ensure the obtaining of a sustainable microalgae culture as a treatment method for TOPW.

Abstract
This study investigated the cultivation of the marine alga Nannochloropsis gaditana in a medium based on desalination concentrate (DC) with an optimal concentration of 75% DC, under three trophic conditions and four photoperiod schedules. N. gaditana produced a peak biomass concentration (1.25gL-1) under mixotrophic culture condition and a photoperiod of 16L:08D. N. gaditana cells compensate to different light-dark regimes producing different amounts of protein (17.9-44.8%). The intracellular lipid content in N. gaditana cells increased both under autotrophic conditions with a 16L:08D cycle (16.7%), and under mixotrophic conditions with a 08L:16D cycle (15.7%). In heterotrophic culture, N. gaditana cells were rich in polyunsaturated fatty acids (46.0%). This study demonstrates an alternative approach to enhancing intracellular lipid content of the marine alga N. gaditana by modifying the photoperiod, trophic conditions and stress-salinity-conductivity with the use of a DC-based medium.

Abstract
Separate hydrolysis fermentation (SHF) and simultaneous saccharification fermentation (SSF) processes were studied for bioethanol production from microalgal biomass. SSF was selected as an efficient process to enhance the bioethanol yield through repeated-batches using immobilized yeast cells. Combined sonication and enzymatic hydrolysis of Chlamydomonas mexicana generated 10.5 and 8.48g/L of ethanol in SSF and SHF, respectively. Yeast utilized maximum portion of total reducing sugar (TRS) reaching a consumption efficiency of 91-98%. A bioethanol yield of 0.5g/g (88.2% of theoretical yield) and volumetric productivity of 0.22g/L/h was obtained after 48h of SSF. Immobilized yeast cells enabled repetitive production of ethanol for 7 cycles displaying a fermentation efficiency up to 79% for five consecutive cycles. The maximum ethanol production was 9.7g/L in 2nd-4th cycles. A total energy recovery of 85.81% was achieved from microalgal biomass in the form of bioethanol. Repeated-batch SSF demonstrated the possibility of cost-effective bioethanol production.
