Electrochemical oxidation of ciprofloxacin in two different processes: the electron transfer process on the anode surface and the indirect oxidation process in bulk solutions. ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCE. Abstract
Herein, the rotating disk electrode technique was used for the first time to investigate the effects of mass-transfer limitations and pH on the electrochemical oxidation of CPX, to determine the kinetics of CPX oxidation and to explore intrinsic mechanisms during the electron transfer process. Firstly, cyclic voltammetry revealed that an obvious irreversible CPX oxidation peak was observed within the potential window from 0.70 to 1.30 V at all pHs. Based on the Levich equation, the electrochemical oxidation of CPX in the electron transfer process was found to be controlled by both diffusion and kinetic processes when pH = 2, 5, 7 and 9; the diffusion coefficient of CPX at pH = 2 was calculated to be 1.5 × 10-7 cm2 s-1. Kinetic analysis indicated that the reaction on the electrode surface was adsorption-controlled compared to a diffusion process; the surface concentration of electroactive species was estimated to be 1.15 × 10-9 mol cm-2, the standard rate constant of the surface reaction was calculated to be 1.37 s-1, and CPX oxidation was validated to be a two-electron transfer process. Finally, a possible CPX oxidation pathway during the electron transfer process was proposed. The electrochemical degradation of CPX on a Ti-based anode was also conducted subsequently to investigate the electrochemical oxidation of CPX in the indirect oxidation process in bulk solutions. The effects of pH and current density were determined and compared to related literature results. The oxidation of CPX at different pHs is believed to be the result of a counterbalance between favorable and unfavorable factors, namely electromigration and side reactions of oxygen evolution, respectively. The effects of current density indicated a diffusion- and reaction-controlled process at low currents followed by a reaction-controlled process at high currents. The results presented in this study provide better understanding of the electrochemical oxidation of CPX and would enable the development of new treatment methods based on electrochemistry.

Abstract
Sub-optimal exposure to antimicrobial therapy is associated with poor patient outcomes and the development of antimicrobial resistance. Mechanisms for optimizing the concentration of a drug within the individual patient are under development. However, several barriers remain in realizing true individualization of therapy. These include problems with plasma drug sampling, availability of appropriate assays, and current mechanisms for dose adjustment. Biosensor technology offers a means of providing real-time monitoring of antimicrobials in a minimally invasive fashion. We report the potential for using microneedle biosensor technology as part of closed-loop control systems for the optimization of antimicrobial therapy in individual patients.

Abstract
The simultaneous and sensitive electrochemical detection of dihydroxybenzene isomers (hydroquinone, HQ; catechol, CC; resorcinol, RS) is of great significance because such isomers can be awfully harmful to the environment and human health. In this paper, by preparing poly(L-arginine) modified glassy carbon electrode (P-L-Arg/GCE) with a simple method, a highly sensitive electrochemical sensor for simultaneously detecting HQ, CC and RS was constructed successfully due to the large surface area, good electronic properties and catalytic ability of P-L-Arg/GCE and the electrostatic action between P-L-Arg (positive) and targets (negative). Under the optimized conditions, the results show that the P-L-Arg/GCE has a wide linear range from 0.1 to 110.0 μM for HQ ,CC and RS. The detection limits for HQ, CC and RS are 0.01, 0.03 and 0.1 μM, respectively. Finally, the proposed sensor was successfully applied in real sample analysis.

Abstract
This study focuses on the development of electrochemical sensors for the detection of Ciprofloxacin (CFX) in natural waters and wastewater effluents. The sensors are prepared by depositing a layer of multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) dispersed in a porous Nafion film on to a boron-doped diamond (BDD) electrode substrate. The porous-Nafion-MWCNT/BDD electrode enhanced detection of CFX due to selective adsorption, which was accomplished by a combination of electrostatic attraction at -SO3(-) sites in the porous Nafion film and the formation of charge assisted hydrogen bonding between CFX and -COOH MWCNT surface functional groups. By contrast, the bare BDD electrode did not show any activity for CFX oxidation. The sensors were selective for CFX detection in the presence of other antibiotics (i.e., amoxicillin) and other nontarget water constituents (i.e., Cl(-), Ca(2+), humic acid, sodium dodecylbenzenesulfonate, salicylic acid, 4-aminobenzoic acid, and 4-hydroxybenzoic acid). A limit of detection of 5 nM (S/N = 5.04 ± 0.26) in a 0.1 M KH2PO4 supporting electrolyte (pH = 4.5) was obtained using differential pulse voltammetry. The linear dynamic ranges with respect to CFX concentration were 0.005-0.05 μM and 0.05-10 μM, and the sensitivities were 41 ± 5.2 μA μM(-1) and 2.1 ± 0.22 μA μM(-1), respectively. Sensor fouling was observed at high concentrations of some organic compounds such as 1 mM 4-aminobenzoic acid and 4-hydroxybenzoic acid. However, a short cathodic treatment fully restores sensor response. The results indicate that these sensors have application in detecting CFX in natural waters and wastewater effluents.

Abstract
A new automated pharmacoanalytical technique for convenient quantification of redox-active antibiotics has been established by combining the benefits of a carbon nanotube (CNT) sensor modification with electrocatalytic activity for analyte detection with the merits of a robotic electrochemical device that is capable of sequential nonmanual sample measurements in 24-well microtiter plates. Norfloxacin (NFX) and ciprofloxacin (CFX), two standard fluoroquinolone antibiotics, were used in automated calibration measurements by differential pulse voltammetry (DPV) and accomplished were linear ranges of 1–10 μM and 2–100 μM for NFX and CFX, respectively. The lowest detectable levels were estimated to be 0.3±0.1 μM (n=7) for NFX and 1.6±0.1 μM (n=7) for CFX. In standard solutions or tablet samples of known content, both analytes could be quantified with the robotic DPV microtiter plate assay, with recoveries within ±4% of 100%. And recoveries were as good when NFX was evaluated in human serum samples with added NFX. The use of simple instrumentation, convenience in execution, and high effectiveness in analyte quantitation suggest the merger between automated microtiter plate voltammetry and CNT-supported electrochemical drug detection as a novel methodology for antibiotic testing in pharmaceutical and clinical research and quality control laboratories.
