Effect of pH, ionic strength and humic acid on the sorption of uranium(VI) to attapulgite

Adsorption and desorption of uranium (VI) in aerated zone soil

In this paper, the adsorption and desorption behavior of uranium (VI) in aerated zone soil (from Southwest China) was systematically investigated using a static experimental method in order to provide useful information for safety assessment of the disposal of (ultra-)low uraniferous radioactive waste, as well as a potential remediation method for uranium-contaminated soils. The adsorption behavior of uranium (VI) was firstly studied by batch experiments as functions of contact time, pH, liquid/solid ratio, temperature, colloids, minerals and coexistent ions. The results indicated that the adsorption of uranium (VI) by natural soil was efficient at an initial concentration of 10 mg/L uranium (VI) nitrate solution with 100 mg natural soil at room temperature when pH is about 7.0. The adsorption was strongly influenced by the solution pH, contact time, initial concentration and colloids. The adsorption equilibrium for uranium (VI) in soil was obtained within 24 h and the process could be described by the Langmuir adsorption equation. For uranium (VI) desorption, EDTA, citric acid and HNO(3) were evaluated under different conditions of temperature, concentration and proportion of liquid to solid. The adsorbed uranium (VI) on natural soil could be easily extracted by all these agents, especially by HNO(3), implying that the uranium-contaminated soils can be remedied by these reagents.

Preparation and application of attapulgite/iron oxide magnetic composites for the removal of U(VI) from aqueous solution

Recently, magnetic sorbents have received considerable attention because of their excellent segregative features and sorption capacities. Herein, attapulgite/iron oxide magnetic (ATP/IOM) composites were prepared and characterized. The sorption results indicated that ATP/IOM composites were superior to ATP and iron oxides individually for the removal of U(VI) from aqueous solution. Based on X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analysis and surface complexation model, the main sorption species of U(VI) on ATP were==X(2)UO(2)(0) below pH 4.0 and==S(s)OUO(2)(+), ==S(w)OUO(2)CO(3)(-), and==S(w)OUO(2)(CO(3))(2)(3-) above pH 5.0. However the prevalent species on ATP/IOM composites were==S(s)OUO(2)(+) and==S(w)OUO(2)(CO(3))(2)(3-) over the observed pH range. ATP/IOM composites are a promising candidate for pre-concentration and immobilization of radionuclides from large volumes of aqueous solutions, as required for remediation purposes.

Chemically modified attapulgite with asparagine for selective solid-phase extraction and preconcentration of Fe(III) from environmental samples

A new method that utilizes asparagine modified attapulgite as a solid phase extractant has been developed for preconcentration of trace Fe(III) prior to the measurement by inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry. Characterization of the surface modification was performed on the basis of Fourier transform infrared spectra. The separation/preconcentration conditions of the analyte were investigated, including the pH value, the shaking time, the sample fl ow rate and volume, the elution condition and the interfering ions. At pH 4, the new adsorbent had relatively high capacity and enrichment factor compared to other methods reported so far. The adsorbed Fe(III) was quantitatively eluted by 2 mL of 0.5 mol L(-1) HCl. Common coexisting ions did not interfere with the separation. The detection limit of the method was 0.19 microg L(-1). The relative standard deviation was 3.4% (n=8) which indicated that the method had good precision for the analysis of trace Fe(III) in solution samples. The method was validated using two certified reference materials and has been applied for the determination of trace Fe(III) in biological and natural water samples with satisfactory results.
