Biosorption of copper(II) and cadmium(II) from aqueous solutions by free and immobilized biomass of Aspergillus niger

Efficacy and reusability of alginate-immobilized live and heat-inactivated Trichoderma asperellum cells for Cu (II) removal from aqueous solution

Cu(II) removal efficacies of alginate-immobilized Trichoderma asperellum using viable and non-viable forms were investigated with respect to time, pH, and initial Cu(II) concentrations. The reusability potential of the biomass was determined based on sorption/desorption tests. Cu(II) biosorption by immobilized heat-inactivated T. asperellum cells was the most efficient, with 134.22mg Cu(II) removed g(-1) adsorbent, compared to immobilized viable cells and plain alginate beads (control) with 105.96 and 94.04mg Cu(II) adsorbed g(-1) adsorbent, respectively. Immobilized non-viable cells achieved equilibrium more rapidly within 4h. For all biosorbents, optimum pH for Cu(II) removal was between pH 4 and 5. Reusability of all biosorbents were similar, with more than 90% Cu(II) desorbed with HCl. These alginate-immobilized cells can be applied to reduce clogging and post-separation process incurred from use of suspended biomass.

High performance SiO2-nanoparticles-immobilized-Penicillium funiculosum for bioaccumulation and solid phase extraction of lead

Novel biosorbent systems were designed, investigated and implemented for bioaccumulation of Pb(II) from aqueous solutions. These are based on the combination of SiO(2)-nanoparticles (N-Si) with Penicillium funiculosum fungus (Pen) for the formation of (N-Si-Pen) as well as heat inactivated Penicillium funiculosum (Pen). The SiO(2)-nanoparticles were also investigated as a solid sorbent phase. Surface characterization and immobilization were examined and confirmed by using FT-IR and SEM analysis. A batch equilibrium technique was used to follow-up the adsorption processes of lead under the effect of pH, contact time, sorbent dosage and initial metal concentration. The maximum capacity values were 1200.0 and 1266.7μmolg(-1) for (Pen) and (N-Si-Pen), respectively at pH 5. Sorption equilibria were established in ∼20min and their data were well described by Langmuir, Freundlich and Dubinin-Radushkevich models. The potential applications of these biosorbents for extraction of Pb(II) from real samples contaminated with lead, were successfully accomplished.

Characterization of metal removal of immobilized Bacillus strain CR-7 biomass from aqueous solutions

Bacillus strain CR-7 of multiple metal and antibiotic resistances was isolated. Its metal adsorption under different pretreatments and immobilizations from aqueous solution was characterized. Pretreatment with NaOH (0.1 mol L(-1)) significantly improved Cu(2+) adsorption capacity of the bacterial biomass. Sodium alginate (2%) was the ideal immobilization matrix. The immobilized and pretreated biomass had an obvious "orderliness", following the order of Cu(2+)>Zn(2+) in the solution containing these two metals, and following the order of Pb(2+)>Al(3+)>Cr(6+)>Cu(2+)>Fe(3+)>Zn(2+) = Ni(2+)>Cd(2+) = Co(2+)>Mn(2+) in the solution containing these 10 metals. ΔH° and ΔS° of Cu(2+) adsorption were +7.68 J/mol and +16.628 J/mol K, respectively. The infrared peak of -N-H shifted greatly after Cu(2+) adsorption. After adsorption treatment, some molecular groups disappeared in un-immobilized biomass but were still present in the immobilized biomass. Cu(2+) adsorption fit both Langmuir and Freundlich isotherm models. It was concluded (1) that the Cu(2+) adsorption process was endothermic, (2) that -N-H is a most important Cu(2+)-binding group, (3) that immobilization prevents loss or damage of the Cu(2+)-binding molecular groups, and (4) that Cu(2+) adsorption of pretreated and immobilized biomass is homogeneous.

Removal of heavy metal ions from wastewaters: a review

Heavy metal pollution has become one of the most serious environmental problems today. The treatment of heavy metals is of special concern due to their recalcitrance and persistence in the environment. In recent years, various methods for heavy metal removal from wastewater have been extensively studied. This paper reviews the current methods that have been used to treat heavy metal wastewater and evaluates these techniques. These technologies include chemical precipitation, ion-exchange, adsorption, membrane filtration, coagulation-flocculation, flotation and electrochemical methods. About 185 published studies (1988-2010) are reviewed in this paper. It is evident from the literature survey articles that ion-exchange, adsorption and membrane filtration are the most frequently studied for the treatment of heavy metal wastewater.

Chemical reaction- and particle diffusion-based kinetic modeling of metal biosorption by a Phormidium sp.-dominated cyanobacterial mat

The present study explores the suitability of chemical reaction-based and diffusion-based kinetic models for defining the biosorption of Cu(II), Cd(II) and Pb(II) by Phormidium sp.-dominated mat. The time-course data of metal sorption by the test mat significantly (r2=0.932-0.999) fitted to the chemical reaction-based models namely pseudo-first-order, -second-order, and the general rate law. However, these models fail to accurately describe the kinetics of metal biosorption due either to prefixed order or unjustifiable change in rate constant and reaction order with varying concentrations of metal and biomass in the solution. The diffusion-based models, namely, the intra-particle diffusion model and the external mass transfer model fitted well to the time-course metal sorption data, thus suggesting involvement of both external and intra-particle diffusion processes in sorption of test metals by mat biomass. However, the Boyd kinetic expression clearly showed that the external mass transfer is the dominant process.
