Abstract
The synthesis and structural characterization of five transition metal complexes with different dimensionality and incorporating residues of 3-amino-1H-1,2,4-triazole-5-carboxylic acid (H2atrc) is reported: [Zn(Hatrc)2(H2O)] (1), [Mn(Hatrc)2(H2O)2]·2H2O (2), [Fe2(Hatrc)4(OH)2]·6H2O (3), [Cd(Hatrc)2(H2O)]n (4), and [Mn(atrc)(H2O)]n·nH2O (5). These materials could be prepared from solution (1–3), diffusion (4), or hydrothermal reactions (5) with various anions and L:M ratios. Structural details were revealed by single crystal X-ray diffraction. The discrete units composing compounds 1–3, the polymeric 1D chain of 4 and the 2D layer of 5 are further extended into 3D supramolecular architectures through the formation of hydrogen bonds.

Abstract
Ultrafast excited-state dynamics of planar Pt, Pd, and Ni dithione-dithiolato complexes were investigated by transient absorption spectroscopy on the femtosecond-picosecond timescale. All studied complexes show a common photobehaviour, although individual kinetics parameters and quantum yields vary with the metal, the dithione ligand and, namely the solvent (DMF, MeCN). Laser pulse irradiation at 800 nm populates the lowest singlet excited state of a dithiolato → dithione charge transfer character, (1)LL'CT. The optically excited state undergoes a solvation-driven sub-picosecond electronic relaxation that enhances the dithione/dithiolato charge separation. The (1)LL'CT state decays with a 1.9-4.5 ps lifetime by two simultaneous pathways: intersystem crossing (ISC) to the lowest triplet state (3)LL'CT and non-radiative decay to the ground state. ISC occurs on a ∼6 ps timescale, virtually independent of the metal, whereas the rate of the non-radiative decay to the ground state decreases on going from Ni (2 ps) to Pd (3 ps) and Pt (∼10 ps). (3)LL'CT is initially formed as a vibrationally excited state. Its equilibration (cooling) takes place on a picosecond timescale and is accompanied by a competitive decay to the ground state. Equilibrated (3)LL'CT is populated with a quantum yield of less than 50%, depending on the metal: Pt > Pd > Ni. (3)LL'CT is long-lived for Pt and Pd (≫500 ps) and short-lived for Ni (∼15 ps). Some of the investigated complexes also exhibit spectral changes due to vibrational cooling of the singlet (2-3 ps, depending on the solvent). Rotational diffusion occurs with lifetimes in the 120-200 ps range. Changing the dithione (Bz2pipdt/(i)Pr2pipdt) as well as dithiolate/diselenolate (dmit/dsit) ligands has only small effects on the photobehavior. It is proposed that the investigated dithione-dithiolato complexes could act as photooxidants (*E(o) ≈ +1.2 V vs. NHE) utilizing their lowest excited singlet ((1)LL'CT), provided that the excited-state electron transfer is ultrafast, competitive with the picosecond decay. On the other hand, the efficiency of any triplet-based processes would be severely limited by the low quantum yield of the triplet population.

Abstract
![]()
In any physicochemical
process in liquids, the dynamical response
of the solvent to the solutes out of equilibrium plays a crucial role
in the rates and products: the solvent molecules react to the changes
in volume and electron density of the solutes to minimize the free
energy of the solution, thus modulating the activation barriers and
stabilizing (or destabilizing) intermediate states. In charge transfer
(CT) processes in polar solvents, the response of the solvent always
assists the formation of charge separation states by stabilizing the
energy of the localized charges. A deep understanding of the solvation
mechanisms and time scales is therefore essential for a correct description
of any photochemical process in dense phase and for designing molecular
devices based on photosensitizers with CT excited states. In
the last two decades, with the advent of ultrafast time-resolved
spectroscopies, microscopic models describing the relevant case of
polar solvation (where both the solvent and the solute molecules have
a permanent electric dipole and the mutual interaction is mainly dipole–dipole)
have dramatically progressed. Regardless of the details of each model,
they all assume that the effect of the electrostatic fields of the
solvent molecules on the internal electronic dynamics of the solute
are perturbative and that the solvent–solute coupling is mainly
an electrostatic interaction between the constant permanent dipoles
of the solute and the solvent molecules. This well-established picture
has proven to quantitatively rationalize spectroscopic effects of
environmental and electric dynamics (time-resolved Stokes shifts,
inhomogeneous broadening, etc.). However, recent computational and
experimental studies, including ours, have shown that further improvement
is required. Indeed, in the last years we investigated several
molecular complexes
exhibiting photoexcited CT states, and we found that the current description
of the formation and stabilization of CT states in an important group
of molecules such as transition metal complexes is inaccurate. In
particular, we proved that the solvent molecules are not just spectators
of intramolecular electron density redistribution but significantly
modulate it. Our results solicit further development of quantum
mechanics computational
methods to treat the solute and (at least) the closest solvent molecules
including the nonperturbative treatment of the effects of local electrostatics
and direct solvent–solute interactions to describe the dynamical
changes of the solute excited states during the solvent response.

Abstract
A family of charge-transfer chromophores comprising square-planar nickel(II) complexes with one catecholate donor ligand and one α-diimine acceptor ligand is reported. The nine new chromophores were prepared using three different catecholate ligands and three different α-diimine ligands. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction studies on all members of the series confirm a catecholate donor-nickel(II)-α-diimine acceptor electronic structure. The coplanar arrangement of donor and acceptor ligands manifests an intense ligand-to-ligand charge-transfer (LL'CT) absorption band that can be tuned incrementally from 650 nm (1.9 eV) to 1370 nm (0.9 eV). Electrochemical studies of all nine complexes reveal rich redox chemistry with two one-electron reduction processes and two one-electron oxidation processes. For one dye, both the singly reduced anion and the singly oxidized cation were prepared, isolated, and characterized by EPR spectroscopy to confirm ligand-localization of the redox processes. The optical and electrochemical properties of these new complexes identify them as attractive candidates for charge-transfer photochemistry and solar-energy conversion applications.

Abstract
The mixed-ligand complexes [M(II)(Et2dazdt)(mnt)] (M = Ni, 1; Pd, 2; Pt, 3) [Et2dazdt = N,N'-diethyl-perhydrodiazepine-2,3-dithione; mnt = maleonitrile-2,3-dithiolate] have been prepared and fully characterized. X-ray diffractometric studies on 1-3 (the structure of 1 was already known) show that the crystals are isostructural (triclinic, P-1), and two independent molecular entities are present in the unit cell. These entities differ in the orientation of the ethyl substituents with respect to the epta-atomic ring. In the C2S2MS2C2 dithiolene core the four sulfur atoms define a square-planar coordination environment of the metal where the M-S bond distances involving the two ligands are similar, while the C-S bond distances in the C2S2 units exhibit a significant difference in Et2dazdt (dithione) and mnt (dithiolato) ligands. 1-3 show in the visible region one or two moderately strong absorption peaks, having ligand-to-ligand charge-transfer (CT) character with some contribution of the metal, and show negative solvatochromism and molecular quadratic optical nonlinearity, which was determined by the EFISH (electric-field-induced second-harmonic generation) technique. These complexes are redox active and show two reversible reduction waves and one irreversible oxidation wave. Theoretical calculations based on DFT and TD-DFT calculations on complexes 1-3 as well as on [Pt(Bz2pipdt)(mnt)] (4) and [Pt(Bz2pipdt)(dmit)] (5) highlight the factors which affect the optical properties of these second-order redox-active NLO chromophores. Actually, the torsion angle of the dithione system (δ2) inversely correlates either with the oscillator strengths of the main transition of the complexes or with their beta values. The high beta value of 5 can be attributed both to its lowest torsion angles and to the extent of the π system of its dithiolate ligand, dmit.

Abstract
The deprotection of a common precursor moiety in dithiolene chemistry was discovered to be fully reversible, which, besides being relevant for researchers working in very different fields with these non-innocent ligand systems, may even have an impact on CO2 housekeeping, as the deprotected ligand acts as an efficient trap.

Abstract
The complex Et(4)N[Ni(4-pedt)(2)] (1) (4-pedt = 1-(pyridine-4-yl) ethylene-1,2-dithiolate) was synthesized to investigate the behaviour of metal dithiolene compounds upon protonation and oxidation by absorption spectroscopy, electrochemistry and structural analyses and to further understand the electronic states of the dithiolene compounds. It is unexpected that the 915 nm NIR transition band is not shifted when H(+) is added, and it is only affected (blue-shifted) when the compound is oxidized. All the evidence of electronic spectra indicates that the NIR band is relevant to the central [Ni(edt)(2)] moiety (edt = ethylenedithiolate), not the behaviour of individual Ni ions or ligands. It is also not the band of intermolecular interaction of a dimer. The moderately intense band appearing at 655 nm upon protonation is assigned to the intramolecular charge-transfer band between the [Ni(edt)(2)] moiety and the pyridine. The redox potentials of the metal dithiolene are sensitive to the protonation of the pyridyl group. The structures of monocationic complex and the protonated compounds [Ni(4-Hpedt)(2)]·ClO(4)·H(2)O (2) and [Ni(4-Hpedt)(2)]·PhSO(3)·2DMF (3) were characterized by single crystal X-ray determination. The structural data demonstrate that the oxidation of the monoanionic dithiolene complex to neutral does not change the Ni-S bond distances obviously, which further indicates that the process is not only the metal centered oxidation.

Abstract
Square planar complexes of the type Ni(L(1))(2), Ni(L(2))(2), Cu(L(1))(2), and Cu(L(2))(2), where L(1)H = 2-hydroxy-5-t-octylacetophenone oxime and L(2)H = 2-hydroxy-5-n-propylacetophenone oxime, have been prepared and characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction, cyclic voltammetry, UV/vis spectroscopy, field-effect-transistor measurements, density functional theory (DFT) and time-dependent DFT (TDDFT) calculations, and, in the case of the paramagnetic species, electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) and magnetic susceptibility. Variation of alkyl groups on the ligand from t-octyl to n-propyl enabled electronic isolation of the complexes in the crystal structures of M(L(1))(2) contrasting with π-stacking interactions for M(L(2))(2) (M = Ni, Cu). This was evidenced by a one-dimensional antiferromagnetic chain for Cu(L(2))(2) but ideal paramagnetic behavior for Cu(L(1))(2) down to 1.8 K. Despite isostructural single crystal structures for M(L(2))(2), thin-film X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) revealed different morphologies depending on the metal and the deposition method (vapor or solution). The Cu complexes displayed limited electronic interaction between the central metal and the delocalized ligands, with more mixing in the case of Ni(II), as shown by electrochemistry and UV/vis spectroscopy. The complexes M(L(2))(2) showed poor charge transport in a field-effect transistor (FET) device despite the ability to form π-stacking structures, and this provides design insights for metal complexes to be used in conductive thin-film devices.

Abstract
Metallo-dithiolene non-innocence is explored in an oxomolybdenum-bis(dithione) complex, [Mo4+O(i-Pr2Pipdt)2Cl][PF6] (where i-Pr2Pipdt is N,N'-piperazine-2,3-dithione), that possesses a piperazine ring as an integral part of the dithiolene ligand. The title complex displays unusual spectroscopic features for a formally reduced Mo(IV) dithiolene complex, namely a low energy metal-to-ligand charge transfer band with appreciable intensity and C-C and C-S stretching frequencies that are markedly different from those of oxomolydenum complexes coordinated to dianionic dithiolene ligands. The electronic structure of the ligand has been described in valence bond terms as a resonance hybrid of dithione and dizwitterionic dithiolene contributing structures.

Abstract
Synthesis, characterization, NLO properties, and theoretical studies of the mixed-ligand dithiolene complexes of the nickel triad [M(II)(Bz(2)pipdt)(mnt)] (Bz(2)pipdt = 1,4-dibenzyl-piperazine-3,2-dithione, mnt = maleonitriledithiolato, M(II) = Ni, 1, Pd, 2, Pt, 3) are reported. Molecular structural characterization of 1-3 points out that four sulfur atoms are in a slightly distorted square-planar geometry. While the M-S bond distances are only slightly different, comparison of the C-C and C-S bonds in the C(2)S(2)MS(2)C(2) core allows us to point out a significant difference between the C-C and the C-S distances in Bz(2)pipdt and mnt. These findings suggest assigning a dithiolato character to mnt (pull ligand) and a dithione one (push ligand) to Bz(2)pipdt. Cyclic voltammetry of 1-3 exhibits two reversible reduction waves and a broad irreversible oxidation wave. These complexes are characterized in the visible region by a peak of moderately strong intensity, which undergoes negative solvatochromism. The molecular quadratic optical nonlinearities were determined by the EFISH technique, which provided the following values μβ(λ) (10(-48) esu) = -1436 (1), -1450 (2), and -1950 (3) converted in μβ(0) (10(-48) esu) = -463 (1), -684 (2), and -822 (3), showing that these complexes exhibit large negative second-order polarizabilities whose values depend on the metal, being highest for the Pt compound. DFT and TD-DFT calculations on 1-3 allow us to correlate geometries and electronic structures. Moreover, the first molecular hyperpolarizabilities have been calculated, and the results obtained support that the most appealing candidate as a second-order NLO chromophore is the platinum compound. This is due to (i) the most extensive mixture of the dithione/metal/dithiolato orbitals, (ii) the influence of the electric field of the solvent on the frontier orbitals that maximizes the difference in dipole moments between the excited and the ground state, and (iii) the largest oscillator strength in the platinum case vs nickel and palladium ones.

Abstract
Two deuteriumed quasi-one-dimensional (quasi-1D) spin-Peierls-type compounds, 4-X-benzylpyridinium-d(5) bis(maleo-nitriledithiolato)nickelate (the substituent X = Br or Cl), were structurally characterized. Compared with the corresponding non-deuteration compounds, the transition temperature T(C) shifts to higher temperature. The isotopic effect of countercations on T(C) is probably related to the change of phonon frequency ω(0) and 'chemical pressure' resulted from the substitution of pyridine by pyridine-d(5).
