Abstract
Aqueous solution state host-guest systems have been studied, comprising the large host cucurbit[10]uril with luminescent cationic tris(polypyridyl) (PP) metal complexes [Ru(PP)3]2+ and [Ir(PP)3]3+. All complexes bind strongly with the host, with the overall complex charge and size having a minor effect on affinity but influencing the association dynamics and contribution from higher-order (1:2) host-guest species. The 1:2 species contributes more significantly to the binding equilibrium in the case of [Ru(phen)3]2+. The effect of the host upon emission is highly variable and depends on the electronic structure of the guest. The metal-to-ligand charge transfer (MLCT) emission of [Ru(PP)3]2+ is strongly quenched, in contrast to the large enhancements seen previously for MLCT emission of iridium cyclometalated complexes, while the ligand-centered emission of [Ir(PP)3]3+ is little affected. The mechanisms of quenching and enhancement are discussed, together with the implications for the design of larger supramolecular assemblies based on these archetypal emitters.

Abstract
A symmetric tetramethylcucurbit[6]uril-based porous supramolecular assembly was prepared in an aqueous H2SO4 solution (5M). The driving force for the formation of this assembly is mainly the outer surface interaction of Q[n], which includes the ion-dipole interaction of SO42− anions and the positive electrostatic potential of the outer surface of the symmetric tetramethylcucurbit[6]uril (TMeQ[6]), the dipole-dipole interactions between the positive electrostatic potential of the outer surface of TMeQ[6] and portal carbonyl oxygens of TMeQ[6], and the hydrogen bonding between lattice water molecules and portal carbonyl oxygen atoms in TMeQ[6]. The TMeQ[6]-based porous supramolecular assembly exhibits the characteristics of absorbed fluorophore guests (FGs), such as dyes and polycyclic compounds with different fluorescence characteristics. Moreover, the resulting luminescent assemblies (FG@As) can respond to certain volatile organic compounds; in particular, the luminescent assemblies of rhodamine B or pyrene display a unique fluorescence enhancement in response to methanol.

Abstract
The binding of imidazolium salts to cucurbit[8]uril, CB[8], triggers a stepwise self-assembly process with semiflexible polymer chains and crystalline nanostructures as early- and late-stage species, respectively. In such a process, which involves the crystallization of the host-guest complexes, the guest plays a critical role in directing self-assembly toward desirable morphologies. These include platelet-like aggregates and two-dimensional (2D) fibers, which, moreover, exhibit viscoelastic and lyotropic properties. Our observations provide a deeper understanding of the self-assembly of CB[8] complexes, with fundamental implications in the design of functional 2D systems and crystalline materials.

Abstract
The reaction of the macrocyclic cavitand cucurbit[6]uril (CB[6]) and the diaqua complex [MoO2Cl2(H2O)2] in hydrochloric acid solution gave a water insoluble supramolecular compound with the general composition 2[MoO2Cl2(H2O)2]·CB[6]·xH2O·yHCl·z(CH3COCH3) (2). Single crystal X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis revealed the presence of barrel-shape supramolecular entities, {CB[6]·10(H2O)}, aligned in layers which are shifted relative to adjacent layers to form a brick-like pattern. The CB[6]/water hydrogen-bonded entities further engage in intermolecular interactions with water, HCl and [MoO2Cl2(H2O)2] molecules to form a three-dimensional (3D) framework. Compound 2 was characterised by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), IR and Raman vibrational spectroscopy, and 13C{1H} CP MAS NMR. The reference complex [MoO2Cl2(H2O)2]·(diglyme)2 (1) and compound 2 were studied for the oxidative catalytic conversion of olefins (cis-cyclooctene, cyclohexene and styrene) with aqueous H2O2 as oxidant. Using alcohols as solvents, 2 was employed in a one-pot two-stage strategy for converting olefins to alkoxy products, which involves oxidation (with H2O2) and acid chemistry. Mechanistic studies were carried out using different intermediates as substrates, and the type of solvent and substrate scope were investigated. The results demonstrated the ability of the CB[6]/MoVI supramolecular adduct to function as an acid-oxidation multifunctional catalyst, and its recovery and reuse via relatively simple procedures.

Abstract
Pillararenes are macrocyclic oligomers of alkoxybenzene akin to calixarenes but tethered at the 2,5-positions via methylene bridges. Benefiting from their unique pillar-shaped architecture favorable for diverse functionalization and versatile host-guest properties, pillararenes decorated with chelating groups worked excellently as supporting platforms to construct extractants or adsorbents for metal ion separation. This feature article provides a detailed summary of pillararenes in Ln/An separation by liquid-liquid extraction and heavy metal separation by solid-liquid extraction. The preorganization effect of the rigid pillararene framework has a profound impact on the extraction of metal ions, and a unique extraction mechanism is observed when employing ionic liquids as solvents. The rich host-guest chemistry of pillararenes enables construction of a wide variety of supramolecular materials as metal ion adsorbents. We also discuss the differences between pillararenes and several well-known macrocycles, with a focus on the metal-ligand coordination and its influencing factors. We hope this review will provide useful information and unleash new opportunities in this field.

Abstract
A series of gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) was prepared in situ with different cucurbit[n]urils (CB[n]s) in an alkaline aqueous solution. The nanoparticle sizes can be well controlled by CB[n]s (n = 5, 6, 7, 8) with different ring sizes. The packing densities of CB[5⁻8] and free surface area on AuNPs were determined. A direct relationship was found between the ring size and packing density of CB[n]s with respect to the AuNP-catalyzed reduction of 4-nitrophenol in the presence of NaBH₄. The larger particle size and higher surface coverage of bigger CB[n]-capped AuNPs significantly decreased the catalytic activity. Furthermore, this work could lead to new applications that utilize AuNPs under an overlayer of CB[n]s for catalysis, sensing, and drug delivery.

Abstract
Upon mixing of aqueous solutions of the freely soluble building blocks cucurbit[7]uril (Q[7]) and 4-sulfocalix[4]arene (SC[4]A), white microcrystals instantly separate in near-quantitative yield. The driving force for this assembly is suggested to be the outer-surface interaction of the Q[n]. Dynamic light scattering, scanning electron microscopy, and NMR (diffusion-ordered NMR spectroscopy) analyses have confirmed the supramolecular aggregation of Q[7] and SC[4]A. Titration 1H NMR spectroscopy and isothermal titration calorimetry have shown that the interaction ratio of Q[7] and SC[4]A is close to 3:1. Moreover, the Q[7]/SC[4]A-based supramolecular assembly can accommodate molecules of some volatile compounds or luminescent dyes. Thus, this work offers a simple and highly efficient means of preparing adsorbent or solid fluorescent materials.

Abstract
Coordination and supramolecular assemblies of a fully substituted cyclopentanocucurbit[6]uril (CyP6Q[6]) with a series of lanthanide cations (Ln3+) have been investigated in the presence of tetrachlorozincate anion ([ZnCl4]2-). X-ray single-crystal diffraction analysis has revealed that the interaction of CyP6Q[6] and a series of Ln3+cations unexpectedly results in the formation of at least seven different CyP6Q[6]-based coordination complex adduct and supramolecular assemblies groups, including with (1) La3+, Ce3+cations; (2) Pr3+, Nd3+cations; (3) Eu3+, Gd3+, Tb3+, Dy3+ with P1̅ or P1 space group, in which CyP6Q[6] molecules coordinate alternatively with Ln3+cations and form linear coordination polymers; (4) CyP6Q[6] molecules interact alternatively with [Ho(H2O)8]3+ aqueous complexes and form linear supramolecular chains; CyP6Q[6] molecules can assemble two different Ln3+ free porous supramolecular assemblies from CyP6Q[6]-Ln(NO3)3-ZnCl2-HCl systems, Ln = Tm, Yb, and Lu; however, no solid crystals were obtained from system containing Er3+cation. Thus, these differences could lead CyP6Q[6] to be useful in not only the isolation of lighter lanthanides from their heavier lanthanides but also special selectivity for different volatile organic compounds.

Abstract
Coordination supramolecular assemblies of monohydroxycucurbit[7]uril ((HO)Q[7]) with alkaline earth metal ions (AE2+) have been formed in aqueous HCl solution in the presence of tetrachloride cadmium anions ([CdCl4]2-) as a structure directing agent. The driving force for the assembly could be attributed to the interaction of the positive electro-potential outer-surface of (HO)Q[7] molecules with [CdCl4]2- anions and ionic dipole interaction of the hydroxyl of (HO)Q[7] molecules with [CdCl4]2- anions. Moreover, the porous structure of the (HO)Q[7]/AE2+-based coordination supramolecular assemblies could result in potential applications in the selective sorption of polar volatile organic molecules, which may be useful in molecular sieves, sensors, absorption and separation.

Abstract
Cucurbit[n]uril chemistry has become an important part of contemporary supramolecular chemistry since cucurbit[n]urils (Q[n]s) are not only able to encapsulate various guests, but are also capable of coordinating to a wide range of metal ions, leading to the establishment of Q[n]-based host-guest chemistry and coordination chemistry. Each of these impressive developments can be attributed to the growth of protocols for obtaining Q[n]s. In this review, we survey synthetic procedures for obtaining cucurbit[n]urils and their substituted derivatives together with the separation and purification of these remarkable compounds. The coverage is aimed at both existing workers in the field as well as at those requiring an "entry" into Q[n]-based research.

Abstract
Using an established method, we isolated a large quantity of cucurbit[10]uril (Q[10]) and prepared Q[10]-based supramolecular assemblies via different approaches. For example, the structure-directing agent [CdCl4]2– was used or the Q[10] molecule itself acted as a self-structure-directing agent to form different Q[10]-based supramolecular assemblies through the outer surface interaction of Q[10]. Generally, the Q[10]-based supramolecular assemblies possess porous features that suggest that Q[n]-based compounds could be used to manufacture molecular sieves and sensors and applied in absorption and separation technologies.
