Abstract
In the fields of proton exchange membrane fuel cells as well as impedance recognition, molecular sieve, and biochemistry, the development of proton conductive materials is essential. The design and preparation of the next generation of proton conductive materials-crystalline metal-organic framework (MOF) materials with high proton conductivity and excellent water stability-are facing great challenges. Due to the large radius and high positive charge of lanthanides, they often interact with organic ligands to exhibit high coordination numbers and flexible coordination configurations, resulting in the higher stability of lanthanide-based MOFs (Ln-MOFs) than their transition metal analogues, especially regarding water stability. Therefore, Ln-MOFs have attracted considerable attention. This review offers a view of the latest progress of proton conductive Ln-MOFs, including synthesis strategy, structural characteristics, and advantages, proton conductivity, proton conductive mechanism, and applications. More importantly, by discussing structure-property relationships, we searched for and analyzed design techniques and directions of development of Ln-MOFs in the future. The latest progress of synthesis strategy, structural characteristics, proton conductive properties and mechanism and applications on Ln-MOFs. Abstract
A new versatile method for the C–P bond formation of (hetero)aryl halides with trimethyl phosphite via a UV-induced photo-Arbuzov reaction, accessing diverse phosphonate-grafted arenes, heteroarenes and co-facially stacked cyclophanes under mild reaction conditions without the need for catalyst, additives, or base is developed. The UV-induced photo-Arbuzov protocol has a wide synthetic scope with large functional group compatibility exemplified by over 30 derivatives. Besides mono-phosphonates, di- and tri-phosphonates are accessible in good to excellent yields. Mild and transition metal-free reaction conditions consolidate this method's potential for synthesizing pharmaceutically relevant compounds and precursors of supramolecular nanostructured materials. Abstract
To acquire more new crystalline proton conductive materials, three ferrocene-based phenyl carboxylate frameworks (FCFs), [FcCO(o-C6H4COOH)] (FCF 1) (Fc = (η5-C5H5)Fe(η5-C5H4)), [m-FcC6H4COOH] (FCF 2), and [p-FcC6H4COOH] (FCF 3), supported by hydrogen bonds and π···π interactions were prepared. Their structures and phase purities are clarified by single-crystal X-ray diffraction or powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD). In addition, their high thermal and water stability were confirmed by thermogravimetric analyses, PXRD, and scanning electron microscopy determinations. Proton conductivity (σ) of 1-3 was studied under different relative humidities (RHs) and temperatures, and it was found that their σ boosted with the increase of humidity and temperature. Under 100 °C and 98% RH, their optimal σ values are 0.77 × 10-3, 1.94 × 10-4, and 3.46 × 10-3 S·cm-1, respectively. Consequently, their proton conductive mechanisms were proposed by means of activation energy calculation and structural analysis. Note that they are good proton conductive materials and are expected to be used in proton exchange membrane fuel cells.

Abstract
Ultrathin nanosheets of luminescent metal-organic frameworks or coordination polymers have been widely used for sensing ions, solvents and biomolecules but, as far as we are aware, not yet used for temperature sensing. Herein we report two luminescent uranyl phosphonates based on 2-(phosphonomethyl)benzoic acid (2-pmbH3), namely (UO2)(2-pmbH2)2 (1) and (H3O)[(UO2)2(2-pmb)(2-pmbH)] (2). The former has a supramolecular layer structure, composed of chains of corner-sharing {UO6} octahedra and {PO3C} tetrahedra which are connected by hydrogen bonds between phosphonate and carboxylic groups. Compound 2 possesses a unique 2D anionic framework structure, where the inorganic uranyl phosphonate chains made up of {UO7} and {PO3C} polyhedra are cross-linked by 2-pmb3- ligands. The carboxylic groups of 2-pmbH2- ligands are pendant on the two sides of the layers and form hydrogen bonds between the layers. Both compounds can be exfoliated in acetone via a top-down freeze-thaw method, resulting in nanosheets of two-layer thickness. Interestingly, the photoluminescence (PL) of 1 and 2 is highly temperature sensitive. Variable temperature PL studies revealed that compounds 1 and 2 can be used as thermometers in the temperature ranges 120-300 K and 100-280 K, respectively. By doping the nanosheets into polymer matrix, 1-ns@PMMA and 2-ns@PMMA were prepared. The PL intensity of 1-ns@PMMA is insensitive to temperature, unlike that of the bulk sample. While 2-ns@PMMA exhibits similar temperature-dependent luminescence behaviour to its bulk counterpart, thereby enabling its potential application as a thermometer in the temperature range 100-280 K.

Abstract
Energy-efficient selective physisorption driven C2 H2 separation from industrial C2-C1 impurities such as C2 H4 , CO2 and CH4 is of great importance in the purification of downstream commodity chemicals. We address this challenge employing a series of isoreticular cationic metal-organic frameworks, namely iMOF-nC (n=5, 6, 7). All three square lattice topology MOFs registered higher C2 H2 uptakes versus the competing C2-C1 gases (C2 H4 , CO2 and CH4 ). Dynamic column breakthrough experiments on the best-performing iMOF-6C revealed the first three-in-one C2 H2 adsorption selectivity guided separation of C2 H2 from 1:1 C2 H2 /CO2 , C2 H2 /C2 H4 and C2 H2 /CH4 mixtures. Density functional theory calculations critically examined the C2 H2 selective interactions in iMOF-6C. Thanks to the abundance of square lattice topology MOFs, this study introduces a crystal engineering blueprint for designing C2 H2 -selective layered metal-organic physisorbents, previously unreported in cationic frameworks.

Abstract
Nanotubular materials have garnered considerable attention since the discovery of carbon nanotubes. Although the layer-to-tube rolling up mechanism has been well recognized in explaining the formation of many inorganic nanotubes, it has not been generally applied to coordination polymers (CPs). To uncover the key factors that determine the rolling-up of layered CPs, we have chosen the Co/R-, S-Xpemp [Xpemp = (4-X-1-phenylethylamino)methylphosphonic acid, X = H, F, Cl, Br] systems and study how the weak interactions influence the formation of layered or tubular structures. Four pairs of homochiral isostructural compounds R-, S-Co(Xpemp)(H2O)2 [X = H (1H), F (2F), Cl (3Cl), Br (4Br)] were obtained with tubular structures. The inclusion of 3,3'-azobipyridine (ABP) guest molecules led to compounds R-, S-[Co(Xpemp)(H2O)2]4·ABP·H2O with layered structures when X was Cl (5Cl) and Br (6Br), but tubular compounds 1H and 2F when X was H and F. Layered structures were also obtained for racemic compounds meso-Co(Xpemp)(H2O)2 [X = F (7F), Cl (8Cl), Br (9Br)] using racemic XpempH2 as the reaction precursor, but not when X = H. A detailed study on R-6Br revealed that layer-to-tube transformation occurred upon removal of ABP under hydrothermal conditions, forming R-4Br with a tubular structure. Similar layer-to-tube conversion did not occur in organic solvents. The results demonstrate that weak interlayer interactions are a prerequisite but not sufficient for the rolling-up of the layers. In the present cases, water also provides a driving force in the layer-to-tube transformation. The experimental results were rationalized by theoretical calculations.

Abstract
This paper describes the content of my "Concluding remarks" talk at the Faraday Discussion meeting on "MOFs for energy and the environment" (online, 23-25 June 2021). The panel consisted of sessions on the design of MOFs and MOF hybrids (synthetic chemistry), their applications (e.g., capture, storage, separation, electrical devices, photocatalysis), advanced characterization (e.g., transmission electron microscopy, solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance), theory and modeling, and commercialization. MOF chemistry is undergoing a significant evolution from simply network chemistry to the chemistry of synergistic integration with heterogeneous materials involving other disciplines (we call this the fourth generation type). As reflected in the papers of the invited speakers and discussions with the participants, the present and future of this field will be described in detail.

Abstract
Metal-organic framework (MOF) thin films have recently attracted much attention as a new platform for surface/interface research, where unconventional structural and physical properties emerge. Among the many MOFs as candidates for fabrication of thin films, Hofmann-type MOFs {Fe(pz)[M(CN)4]} [pz = pyrazine; M = Ni (Nipz), M = Pt (Ptpz)] are attractive, because they undergo spin transitions with concomitant structural changes. Here, we demonstrate the first example of a strain-controlled spin transition in heterostructured MOF thin films. The spin transition temperature of Ptpz can be controlled in the temperature range of 300-380 K by fabricating a nanometer-sized heterostructured thin film with a Nipz buffer layer, where the smaller lattice of Nipz causes epitaxial compressive strain to the Ptpz layer. The fabricated heterostructured thin film exhibited a remarkable increase in spin transition temperature with a dynamic structural transformation, confirmed by variable-temperature (VT) X-ray diffraction and VT Raman spectroscopy. By verifying interfacial strain in a heterostructured thin film, we can rationally control the characteristics of MOFs-not only spin transition but also various physical properties such as gas storage, catalysis, sensing, proton conductivity, and electrical properties, among others.

Abstract
Two-dimensional (2D) π-conjugated conductive metal-organic frameworks (cMOFs, 2DπcMOF) with modulated channel sizes and a broad conductivity range have been reported in the last decade. In contrast, the corresponding comparative studies on their effects on chemiresistive sensing performances, which measure the resistive response toward external chemical stimuli, have not yet been reported. In this work, we sought to explore the structure-performance relationships of honeycomb-like 2D π-conjugated cMOF chemiresistive gas sensors with channel sizes less than 2 nm (the mass transport issue) and broad conductivity in the range from ∼10-8 S cm-1 to 1 S cm-1 (the charge transport issue). As a result, we found that the cMOF with a lower conductivity facilitates the much more sensitive response toward the charge transfer of the adsorbed gases (relative increases in resistance: R = 63.5% toward 100 ppm of NH3 for the as prepared Cu-THQ sensor with the conductivity of ∼10-8 S cm-1). Interestingly, the cMOF with a medium channel size (Cu-THHP-THQ) exhibited the fastest response speed in sensing, although it contains H2en2+ as neutralizing counterions in the channels. From the evaluation of the pore size distribution, it is found that the overall porosity (meso- & micro-pores) of cMOFs, rather than the pore size of the honeycomb structure, would determine their sensing speed. When comparing the performance of two different morphologies of nanorods (NRs) and nanosheets (NSs), NRs showed a slower response and extended recovery time, which can be ascribed to the slower gas diffusion in the more extended 1D channel. Altogether, our results demonstrate the first systematic studies on the effect of various structural parameters on the chemiresistive sensor performance of cMOFs.

Abstract
Crystalline porous materials (CPMs), exhibiting high surface areas, versatile structural topologies, and tunable functionality, have attracted much attention in the field of proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFC) for their great potential in solid electrolytes. However, most hydrated CPM proton conductors suffer from the narrow working temperature and the high water/humidity dependence. Considering the practical application in different working environments, CPMs with high anhydrous conductivity from subzero to moderate temperature (>100 °C) are desirable, but it is still a huge challenge. Herein we summarized our recent research work in the anhydrous CPM proton conductors, including to rationally tune the structures of CPMs by using the strategies of pore engineering and protonic species control to achieve wide working temperature conduction, as well as to clarify the conducting mechanism. This spotlight will provide clues to flexibly design and fabricate wide-working-temperature CPM conductors with high protonic conductivity.

Abstract
Two lanthanide coordination polymers (CPs) {[Er(Hmtbd)(H2mtbd)(H2O)3]·2H2O}n (1) and [Yb(Hmtbd)(H2mtbd)(H2O)3]n (2) carrying an N-heterocyclic carboxylate ligand 5-(3-methylformate-1H-1,2,4-triazole-1-methyl)benzen-1,3-dicarboxylate (H3mtbd) were prepared under solvothermal conditions. The single-crystal X-ray diffraction data demonstrate that 1 and 2 are isostructural and display 1D chain structure. Alternating current (AC) impedance measurements illustrate that the highest proton conductivities of 1 and 2 can attain 5.09 × 10-3 and 3.09 × 10-3 S·cm-1 at 100 °C and 98% relative humidity (RH), respectively. The value of 1 exceeds those of most reported lanthanide-based crystalline materials and ranks second among the described Er-CPs under similar conditions, whereas the value for 2 is the highest proton conductivity among the previous Yb-CPs. Coupled with the structural analyses of the two CPs and H2O vapor adsorption, the calculated Ea values help to deduce their proton conductive mechanisms. Notably, the N-heterocyclic units (triazole), carboxyl, and hydrogen-bonding network all play key roles in the proton-transfer process. The prominent proton conductive abilities of both CPs show great promise as efficient proton conductors.

Abstract
A novel Zn(II) metal-organic framework [Zn4O(C30H12F4O4S8)3]n, namely ZnBPD-4F4TS, has been constructed from a fluoro- and thiophenethio-functionalized ligand 2,2',5,5'-tetrafluoro-3,3',6,6'-tetrakis(2-thiophenethio)-4,4'-biphenyl dicarboxylic acid (H2BPD-4F4TS). ZnBPD-4F4TS shows a broad green emission around 520 nm in solid state luminescence, with a Commission International De L'Eclairage (CIE) coordinate at x = 0.264, y = 0.403. Since d10-configured Zn(II) is electrochemically inert, its photoluminescence is likely ascribed to ligand-based luminescence which originates from the well-conjugated system of phenyl and thiophenethio moieties. Its luminescent intensities diminish to different extents when exposed to various metal ions, indicating its potential as an optical sensor for detecting metal ion species. Furthermore, ZnBPD-4F4TS and its NH4Br-loaded composite, NH4Br@ZnBPD-4F4TS, were used for proton conduction measurements in different relative humidity (RH) levels and temperatures. Original ZnBPD-4F4TS shows a low proton conductivity of 9.47 × 10-10 S cm-1 while NH4Br@ZnBPD-4F4TS shows a more than 25,000-fold enhanced value of 2.38 × 10-5 S cm-1 at 40 °C and 90% RH. Both of the proton transport processes in ZnBPD-4F4TS and NH4Br@ZnBPD-4F4TS belong to the Grotthuss mechanism with Ea = 0.40 and 0.32 eV, respectively.

Abstract
Proton-conductive materials have attracted increasing attention because of their broad explorations in chemical sensors, water electrolysis, fuel cells, and biological systems. Especially, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have been demonstrated to be extremely promising candidates as proton-exchange membrane (PEM) fuel cells. Compared with other configurations, MOFs with one-dimensional (1D) channels have the characteristics of enhancing the host-guest interaction and promoting the anisotropic motion of proton carriers in restricted volume, which are beneficial for acquiring rich proton sources and forming successive hydrogen bonds to improve proton conductivity. We are endeavored to screen and find a helical three-dimensional (3D) framework InOF-1, namely, [In2(OH)2(BPTC)]·6H2O (BPTC4- = 3,3',5,5'-biphenyl tetracarboxylate), as a typical 1D-channel MOF, which is pristinely grafted with spirally distributed -OH groups on the channel surface. Accompanied by an aliovalent substitution Ni(II) for In(III), isostructural NiOF-1 ([Ni2(BPTC)(HCOOH)2]·3H2O) is successfully prepared and massive formic acids are anchored at interior walls, which are interacted with adsorbed water molecules via the formation of stronger O-H···O bonds. This interaction between host-guest molecules and dynamics of lattice water has already led to a remarkable conductivity of InOF-1 (σ = 7.86 × 10-3 S/cm at 328 K under 95% RH). The synergistic effect of the acidic-modified nanowall, contracted volume, and enhanced adsorption of water molecules in the NiOF-1 channel contributes to a high conductivity value of 3.41 × 10-2 S/cm (at 328 K under 95% RH). Moreover, the proton conduction mechanism is further visually presented by molecular dynamic (MD) simulation. In contrast to InOF-1, aliovalent-substituted and acidic-modified NiOF-1 has a stronger host-guest interaction and more abundant hydrogen-bond networks, resulting in shorter proton migration distances and more frequent proton hopping, in agreement with the experimental results.

Abstract
Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) provided a versatile platform for the development of new solid protonic electrolytes but faced great challenges regarding their low chemical stability and poor moisture retention capacity. Herein, we presented the proton-conducting study for zirconium-based MOF-802, revealing that MOF-802 possessed excellent features of extra aqueous and acidic stabilities and room-temperature superprotonic conduction with a proton conductivity of 1.05 × 10-2 S cm-1 at 288 K under 98% relative humidity (RH). Unfortunately, due to the liberation of water molecules from pores/channels, the proton conductivity of MOF-802 dropped significantly at the temperature above 318 K. To solve this issue, for the first time, MOF-802 was hybridized with poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) to form MOF-802@PVA hydrogel composites, where the moisture retention capacity of MOF-802 was greatly improved, giving the high room-temperature proton conductivity over 10-3 S cm-1 under ambient humidity. This work paves a new way to improve the moisture retention capacity and proton-conducting performances of porous proton conductors.

Abstract
Six isostructural three-dimensional (3D) Ln(III)-organic frameworks, {[Ln2(HMIDC)2(μ4-C2O4)(H2O)3]·4H2O}n [LnIII = GdIII (1), EuIII (2), SmIII (3), NdIII (4), PrIII (5), and CeIII (6)], have been fabricated by using a multifunctional ligand of 2-methyl-1H-imidazole-4,5-dicarboxylic acid (H3MIDC). Ln-metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) 1-6 present 3D structures and possess abundant H-bonded networks between imidazole-N atoms and coordinated and free water molecules. All the six Ln-MOFs demonstrate humidity- and temperature-dependent proton conductivity (σ) having the optimal values of 2.01 × 10-3, 1.40 × 10-3, 0.93 × 10-3, 2.25 × 10-4, 1.11 × 10-4, and 0.96 × 10-4 S·cm-1 for 1-6, respectively, at 100 °C/98% relative humidity, in the order of CeIII (6) < PrIII (5) < NdIII (4) < SmIII (3) < EuIII (2) < GdIII (1). In particular, the σ for 1 is 1 order of magnitude higher than that for 6, and it enhances systematically according to the decreasing order of the ionic radius, indicating that the lanthanide-contraction tactics can effectively regulate the proton conductivity while retaining the proton conduction routes. This will offer valuable guidance for the acquisition of new proton-conducting materials. In addition, the outstanding water stability and electrochemical stability of such Ln-MOFs will afford a solid material basis for future applications.

Abstract
A new terthiophene-based imidazole luminophore 5,5’-(1H-thieno[3,4-d]imidazole-4,6-diyl)bis(thiophene-2-carboxylic acid) (TIBTCH2, 5) was synthesized in one step from previously reported 4,6-di(thiophen-2-yl)-1H-thieno[3,4-d]imidazole (DTTI, 4), and their photophysical properties were studied and compared accordingly. Under solvothermal conditions, reacting 5 with Mn(OAc)2 yielded a new three-dimensional metal-organic framework (MOF, 6) which was structurally defined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. In 6, all Mn(II) ions octahedrally bind to carboxylate-O atoms to form a linear Mn3 secondary building unit (SBU) that contains three distinct coordination modes. Importantly, 6 exhibits dual functional properties of ligand-based emission and metal-based magnetic behaviors.

Abstract
Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have appeared to be promising competitive candidates as crystalline porous materials for proton conduction. Explorations of the method of preparation of proton conductive MOFs and the proton transfer mechanism have enabled them to attract widespread attention, and tremendous efforts have been made to improve the proton conductivity of MOFs. On the basis of our previous work, we explicitly propose that ligand exchange can upgrade the proton conduction performance of MOFs. Using MOF-azo as the precursor, the proton conductivities of exchange products MOF-bpy and MOF-bpe increase by 3.5- and 2.8-fold, respectively. After the MOFs had been doped into the Nafion matrix to prepare composite membranes, the proton conduction performance of composite membranes filled with subproducts (2.6 × 10-2 and 1.95 × 10-2 S cm-1) is significantly better than that of a composite membrane filled with a parent product (1.12 × 10-2 S cm-1) under ambient conditions (without heating or humidifying). The ligand exchange strategy presented herein demonstrates great promise for the development of high-proton conductivity MOFs and MOF composites with expanded future applications.

Abstract
Open-framework zinc phosphate (NMe4)(ZnP2O8H3) undergoes irreversible phase transformation. Structural transformation with α (NMe4·Zn[HPO4][H2PO4] the low-temperature phase) and β (NMe4·ZnH3[PO4]2 the high-temperature phase) (Tc = 149 °C) and conduction properties were investigated by single-crystal X-ray diffraction, differential scanning calorimetry, and alternating current (ac) impedance. The open-framework material was sensitive to humidity and β proton conductivity was higher than 10-2 S cm-1 at room temperature and 98% relative humidity (RH). Given that the high proton conductivity of the open-framework material can compete with that of many advanced proton conductors based on metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), it has broad application prospects in various electrochemical devices.

Abstract
Metal-organic frameworks containing responsive organic linkers are attractive for potential applications in sensors and molecular devices. Herein we report three cobalt(II) phosphonates incorporating responsive dianthracene linkers, namely, Co2 (amp2 H2 )2 (H2 O)4 ⋅ 6H2 O (MDAF-1), Co2 (amp2 )(H2 O)4 ⋅ 2H2 O (MDAF-2) and Co(amp2 H2 ) ⋅ 2H2 O ⋅ 0.5DMF (MDAF-3), where amp2 H4 is pre-photodimerized 9-anthrylmethylphosphonic acid. MDAF-1 shows a layer structure in which dinuclear Co2 (PO3 H)2 units are inter-connected by dianthracene ligands. In MDAF-2 and MDAF-3, inorganic chains of corner-sharing {CoO4 } (or {CoO6 }) and {PO3 C} are cross-linked by dianthracene ligands into 3D frameworks. All compounds underwent thermo-induced phase transitions, first the de-solvation and then the de-dimerization of dianthracene (as well as the release of the remaining solvent molecules for MDAF-2 and -3), associated with magnetic changes. MDAF-1 can be exfoliated into single-layer nanosheets in water which show light-triggered luminescent changes.
