Nanoscale Metal-Organic Frameworks as Fluorescence Sensors for Food Safety

Food safety has attracted attention worldwide, and how to detect various kinds of hazardous substances in an efficient way has always been a focus. Metal-Organic Frameworks (MOFs) are a class of hybrid porous materials formed by organic ligand and metal ions. Nanoscale MOFs (NMOFs) exhibit great potential in serving as fluorescence sensors for food safety due to their superior properties including high accuracy, great stability, fast response, etc. In this review, we focus on the recent development of NMOFs sensing for food safety. Several typical methods of NMOFs synthesis are presented. NMOFs-based fluorescence sensors for contaminants and adulterants, such as antibiotics, food additives, ions and mycotoxin etc. are summarized, and the sensing mechanisms are also presented. We explore these challenges in detail and provide suggestions about how they may be surmounted. This review could help the exploration of NMOFs sensors in food related work.

Advanced materials and technologies for supercapacitors used in energy conversion and storage: a review

Supercapacitors are increasingly used for energy conversion and storage systems in sustainable nanotechnologies. Graphite is a conventional electrode utilized in Li-ion-based batteries, yet its specific capacitance of 372 mA h g−1 is not adequate for supercapacitor applications. Interest in supercapacitors is due to their high-energy capacity, storage for a shorter period and longer lifetime. This review compares the following materials used to fabricate supercapacitors: spinel ferrites, e.g., MFe2O4, MMoO4 and MCo2O4 where M denotes a transition metal ion; perovskite oxides; transition metals sulfides; carbon materials; and conducting polymers. The application window of perovskite can be controlled by cations in sublattice sites. Cations increase the specific capacitance because cations possess large orbital valence electrons which grow the oxygen vacancies. Electrodes made of transition metal sulfides, e.g., ZnCo2S4, display a high specific capacitance of 1269 F g−1, which is four times higher than those of transition metals oxides, e.g., Zn–Co ferrite, of 296 F g−1. This is explained by the low charge-transfer resistance and the high ion diffusion rate of transition metals sulfides. Composites made of magnetic oxides or transition metal sulfides with conducting polymers or carbon materials have the highest capacitance activity and cyclic stability. This is attributed to oxygen and sulfur active sites which foster electrolyte penetration during cycling, and, in turn, create new active sites.

Biomedical applications of metal–organic framework (MOF)-based nano-enzymes

In the present review, the types and activities of nanometer-sized enzymes are summarized, with recent progress of nanometer-sized enzymes in the field of biomedical detection.

Metal-organic frameworks for virus detection

Virus severely endangers human life and health, and the detection of viruses is essential for the prevention and treatment of associated diseases. Metal-organic framework (MOF), a novel hybrid porous material which is bridged by the metal clusters and organic linkers, has become a promising biosensor platform for virus detection due to its outstanding properties including high surface area, adjustable pore size, easy modification, etc. However, the MOF-based sensing platforms for virus detection are rarely summarized. This review systematically divided the detection platforms into nucleic acid and immunological (antigen and antibody) detection, and the underlying sensing mechanisms were interpreted. The nucleic acid sensing was discussed based on the properties of MOF (such as metal ion, functional group, geometry structure, size, porosity, stability, etc.), revealing the relationship between the sensing performance and properties of MOF. Moreover, antibodies sensing based on the fluorescence detection and antigens sensing based on molecular imprinting or electrochemical immunoassay were highlighted. Furthermore, the remaining challenges and future development of MOF for virus detection were further discussed and proposed. This review will provide valuable references for the construction of sophisticated sensing platform for the detection of viruses, especially the 2019 coronavirus.

Versatility of Amide-Functionalized Co(II) and Ni(II) Coordination Polymers: From Thermochromic-Triggered Structural Transformations to Supercapacitors and Electrocatalysts for Water Splitting

The new 2D coordination polymers (CPs) [M(L)₂(H₂O)₂]_n [M = Co^II (1) and Ni^II (2); L = 4-(pyridin-3-ylcarbamoyl)benzoate] were synthesized from pyridyl amide-functionalized benzoic acid (HL). They were characterized by elemental, Fourier transform infrared, thermogravimetric, powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD), and single-crystal X-ray diffraction (XRD) structural analyses. Single-crystal XRD analysis revealed the presence of a 2D polymeric architecture, and topological analyses disclose a 2,4-connected binodal net. A thermochromic effect leads to the production of two new CPs, 1' and 2', by heating at ca. 220 °C, accompanied by a color change from orange to purple in the case of 1 and from blue to green in the case of 2. The transformation of 1 to 1' takes place through an intermediate (1a) with a different twist of the L^- ligand, leading to the formation of a 1D polymeric architecture, as proven by single-crystal XRD analysis. The addition of water or keeping 1' or 2' in air for several days leads to regeneration of 1 or 2, respectively. The thermochromic-triggered structural transformations of 1 and 2 were further substantiated by PXRD and UV-vis ground-state diffuse-reflectance absorption studies. The supercapacitance ability of the CPs 1 and 2 and a Ni-Co composite (made from mixing the CPs 1 and 2) was investigated by electroanalytical techniques, such as cyclic voltammetry and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. The CP 2 exhibits the highest specific capacity of 273.8 C g^-1 at an applied current density of 1.5 A g^-1. These newly developed CPs further act as electrocatalysts for the water-splitting reaction.

Highly efficient Co3O4/CeO2 heterostructure as anode for lithium-ion batteries

Co₃O₄ has been extensively studied as an anode material for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) because of its high theoretical capacity. However, during the charging-discharging processes, the issues of large volume change and low electric conductivity arise, which significantly limit the practical applications of Co₃O₄. To solve these issues, a Co₃O₄/CeO₂ heterostructure derived from metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) was designed and synthesized through one-step microwave synthesis. Benefiting from the mesoporous structure and presence of hetero-components, Co₃O₄/CeO₂ having the molar ratio of Co/Ce = 5:1 (denoted as 5Co₃O₄/CeO₂) exhibits high reversible capacity and excellent cycling stability when used as an anode material for LIBs. Specifically, compared to a single-phase Co₃O₄ anode, which shows a capacity of 538.6 mAh/g after 100 cycles, 5Co₃O₄/CeO₂ exhibits a higher capacity (1131.2 mAh/g at 100 mA/g). This study provides a novel strategy for using rare earth components to modify electrode materials.

Introducing a flexible tetracarboxylic acid linker into functional coordination polymers: synthesis, structural traits, and photocatalytic dye degradation

2,3′,4,4′-Diphenyl ether tetracarboxylic acid was explored as a novel flexible linker for assembling new metal(ii) coordination polymers with notable structural, topological and catalytic features.
