Abstract
The toxicity of simple imidazolium and benzimidazolium salts started to be more and more investigated in the last few years and was taken in consideration in the context of microorganisms, plants and more evolved organisms' exposure. However, the toxicity of these salts can be exploited in the development of different biological applications by incorporating them in the structure of compounds that specifically target microorganisms and cancer cells. We highlight in this minireview the way researchers became aware of the inherent problem of the stability and bioaccumulation of imidazolium and benzimidazolium salts and how they found inspiration to exploit their toxicity by incorporating them into new highly potent drugs.

Abstract
Considerable attention has been devoted to producing antibacterial fabrics due to their very wide applications in medicine, hygiene, hospital, etc. However, the poor antibacterial durability and bad bacterial antiadhesion capacity of most existing antibacterial fabrics limit their applications. In this work, a series of antibacterial and polymeric quaternary ammonium monomers with different alkyl chain length were successfully synthesized to copolymerize with fluorine-containing and other acrylic monomers to generate cationic fluorinated polymer emulsions and durably antibacterial and bacterially antiadhesive cotton fabrics. The relation between antibacterial constituent and its antibacterial activity was investigated. The study indicated that the alkyl chain length and contents of the antibacterial monomers, as well as the add-on percentage of polymer greatly influenced the antibacterial activities of the fabrics. In addition, it was found that incorporation of fluorine component into the polymer greatly enhanced the antibacterial activity and bacterial antiadhesion of the treated fabrics due to the low surface energy induced hydrophobicity. Finally, antibacterial and antiadhesive models of action of the obtained fabrics were illustrated.

Abstract
Ionic liquids (ILs) are much known for their promising alternative for volatile solvents in industries and gained popularity as a greener solvent, however industrial effluent discharge containing ILs are also increasing. There is a scarcity of information on the toxicity of ILs; the present study will explore different facts about their harmfulness. The toxic effects of five different ILs: [C4MIM]Br, [Hx3PC14]N(CN)2, [C10MIM]BF4, [BTDA]Cl and [C4MPY]Cl were analysed on bacteria, fungi, plant and animal cells. Both Gram positive and negative bacteria were found to be more susceptible to [C10MIM]BF4 and [BTDA]Cl than [C4MIM]Br, [Hx3PC14]N(CN)2 and [C4MPY]Cl, whereas fungi revealed quite a resistance to all ILs. All ILs were toxic towards Triticum aestivum affecting their roots and shoots, however [C10MIM]BF4 and [BTDA]Cl were more toxic amongst them. Studies on Allium cepa described their toxic behaviour at the genetic level by altering cell division and nuclear material. Furthermore, studies on human red blood cells described by % haemolysis in which [Hx3PC14]N(CN)2 and [BTDA]Cl exhibited higher toxicity at very lower concentrations. While the genotoxic effect on blood lymphocytes exerted by [Hx3PC14]N(CN)2, [C10MIM]BF4 and [BTDA]Cl confirmed their toxic effects on human cells.

Abstract
Imidazolium-based ionic liquids (ILs) containing cleavable carbonate linkages, 1-alkyloxycarbonyloxyethyl-3-methylimidazolium chlorides with alkyl chains of 10, 12, and 14 carbon atoms, were synthesized, and their self-assembly behavior and antimicrobial activity were investigated. Differential scanning calorimetry and polarized optical microscopy studies reveal that carbonate-functionalized ILs form stable thermotropic smectic liquid-crystalline phases over a wide range of temperature. The surface activity and aggregation behavior of these new ILs were investigated by tensiometry, conductometry, potentiometry, and spectrofluorimetry. The size of aggregates was examined by dynamic light scattering (DLS). Carbonate-functionalized ILs display a higher adsorption efficiency and a lower critical micelle concentration (cmc) than simple alkyl-chain-substituted ILs. The insertion of a carbonate ester moiety in the alkyl side chain favors adsorption at the air-water interface and micellization in the bulk solution when compared to nonfunctionalized ILs. DLS measurements show that small micellelike aggregates are spontaneously formed above the cmc. Furthermore, carbonate-functionalized ILs were examined for their antimicrobial activity against a panel of clinically relevant microorganisms. Biological activity was found to increase with hydrophobicity. The presence of a carbonate ester moiety significantly enhances the antimicrobial efficiency as compared to nonfunctionalized ILs, with the susceptibility of Staphylococcus sp. toward the action of these compounds being particularly remarkable. It has been demonstrated that the functionalization of the alkyl side chain of the imidazolium salts can not only modify the aggregation behavior but also lead to differences in both efficiency and the spectrum of antimicrobial activity of amphiphilic ILs.

Abstract
Biofilm formation is problematic and hence undesirable in medical and industrial settings. In addition to bacteria, phototrophic organisms are an integral component of biofilms that develop on surfaces immersed in natural waters. 1-Alkyl-3-methyl imidazolium ionic liquids (IL) with varying alkyl chain length were evaluated for their influence on the formation of monospecies (Navicula sp.) and multispecies biofilms under phototrophic conditions. An IL with a long alkyl side chain, 1-hexadecyl-3-methylimidaazolium chloride ([C16(MIM)][Cl]) retarded growth, adhesion and biofilm formation of Navicula sp. at concentrations as low as 5μM. Interestingly, [C16(MIM)][Cl] was very effective in preventing multispecies phototrophic biofilms on fibre reinforced plastic surfaces immersed in natural waters (fresh and seawater). SYTOX® Green staining and chlorophyll leakage assay confirmed that the biocidal activity of the IL was exerted through cell membrane disruption. The data show that [C16(MIM)][Cl] is a potent inhibitor of phototrophic biofilms at micromolar concentrations and a promising agent for biofilm control in re-circulating cooling water systems. This is the first report that ionic liquids inhibit biofilm formation by phototrophic organisms which are important members of biofilms in streams and cooling towers.

Abstract
Pyrrolidinium-type small molecule ionic liquids (ILs), poly(ionic liquid) (PIL) homopolymers, and their corresponding PIL membranes were synthesized and used for antibacterial applications. The influences of substitutions at the N position of pyrrolidinium cation on the antimicrobial activities against both Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) and Escherichia coli (E. coli) were studied by minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC). The antibacterial efficiency of both the small molecule ILs and PIL homopolymers increased with the increase of the alkyl chain length of substitutions. Furthermore, PIL homopolymers show relatively lower MIC values, indicating better antimicrobial activities than those of the corresponding small molecule ILs. However, the antibacterial properties of the PIL membranes are contrary to corresponding ILs and PIL homopolymers, which reduce with the increase of alkyl chain length. Furthermore, the resultant PIL membranes show excellent hemocompatibility and low cytotoxicity toward human cells, demonstrating clinical feasibility in topical applications.

Abstract
The structure-antibacterial activity relationship between the small molecular compounds and polymers are still elusive. Here, imidazolium-type ionic liquid (IL) monomers and their corresponding poly(ionic liquids) (PILs) and poly(ionic liquid) membranes were synthesized. The effect of chemical structure, including carbon chain length of substitution at the N3 position and charge density of cations (mono- or bis-imidazolium) on the antimicrobial activities against both Escherichia coli (E. coli) and Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) was investigated by determination of minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC). The antibacterial activities of both ILs and PILs were improved with the increase of the alkyl chain length and higher charge density (bis-cations) of imidazolium cations. Moreover, PILs exhibited lower MIC values relative to the IL monomers. However, the antibacterial activities of PIL membranes showed no correlation to those of their analogous small molecule IL monomers and PILs, which increased with the charge density (bis-cations) while decreasing with the increase of alkyl chain length. The results indicated that antibacterial property studies on small molecules and homopolymers may not provide a solid basis for evaluating that in corresponding polymer membranes.

Abstract
A series of surface-active ionic liquids based on the 1-dodecyl-3-methylimidazolium cation and different anions such as halides and alkylsulfates was synthesized. The aggregation behavior of these ionic liquids in water was characterized by surface tension, conductivity measurements and UV-Vis spectroscopy in order to determine the critical micelle concentration (CMC) and to provide aggregation parameters. The determination of surface activity and aggregation properties of amphiphilic ionic liquids was accompanied by SAXS studies on selected surface-active ionic liquids. The application of these surface-active ionic liquids with different anions was tested in nucleophilic substitution reactions for the degradation of organophosphorus compounds. Kinetic studies via UV-Vis spectrophotometry showed a strong acceleration of the reaction in the micellar system compared to pure water. In addition, an influence of the anion was observed, resulting in a correlation between the anion binding to the micelle and the reaction rate constants, indicating that the careful choice of the surface-active ionic liquid can considerably affect the outcome of reactions.

Abstract
The development of materials with intrinsically antimicrobial activities has attracted great interest. Herein, we report the synthesis of free-standing and robust poly(ionic liquid) (PIL) membranes with high antibacterial activities by in situ photo-cross-linking of an ionic liquid monomer and followed by anion-exchange with an amino acid (l-proline (Pro) or l-tryptophan (Trp)). The resultant PIL-based membranes with excellent robustness exhibit high antimicrobial properties against both Gram-negative Escherichia coli (E. coli) and Gram-positive Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) and present no significant hemolysis and cytotoxicity toward human red blood and skin fibroblast cells, as well as low adsorption of bovine serum albumin. The synthesized PIL-Trp membranes exhibit the highest antibacterial efficiency due to the synergistic attributes of both imidazolium cation and Trp- anion. Furthermore, all the PIL-based membranes exhibit long-term antibacterial stability, which demonstrates clinical feasibility in topical applications.
