Abstract
Dichloromethane (DCM) and 1,2-dichloropsropane (DCP) have various uses, including being solvents for paint removers. Photoinitiators are also used in a wide range of commercial applications such as printing. These chemicals have been shown to induce cytotoxic effects. In the present study, we evaluated the combined effects of DCM or DCP from paint removers and photoinitiators used in printing on normal human embryonic lung fibroblasts with the aim of preventing occupational injuries. We showed that DCP, 2,2-dimethoxy-2-phenylacetophenone (2,2-DMPAP), 2-ethylhexyl-4-(dimethylamino) benzoate (2-EHDAB), 1-hydroxycyclohexyl phenyl ketone (1-HCHPK), and methyl 2-benzoylbenzoate (MBB) induced cytotoxicity, whereas DCM and 2-isopropylthioxanthone (2-ITX) did not. In addition, 2-methyl-4'-(methylthio)-2-morpholinopropiophenone (MTMP) caused a slight increase in cytotoxicity. The combination of DCP and the four photoinitiators (2,2-DMPAP, 2-EHDAB, MBB, and MTMP) significantly induced cytotoxicity and also led to apoptosis. In conclusion, the combination of DCP and photoinitiators may increase the risk of respiratory diseases.

Abstract
Sarcomas are a rare group of mesenchymal tumors affecting a younger population. The etiology remains unknown in most cases. Environmental factors that increase sarcoma risk include radiation exposure and chemical carcinogens. Several familial cancer syndromes confer sarcoma predisposition, such as the Li-Fraumeni Syndrome (LFS). In this increasingly genomic focussed era of medicine, it will be clinically important to understand the genetic basis of sarcoma risk.

Abstract
Photoinitiators are used to promote the polymerization process during the curing of varnishes or inks on cartonboard packaging. Depending on storage conditions and shelf life, these substances are able to migrate through the packaging layer into the foodstuff. This type of contamination phenomenon is therefore becoming a critical issue in terms of food safety. In order to tackle this problem, a fast and selective method was developed for the determination of benzophenone and three methylbenzophenone isomers in cereal-based foodstuffs and their cardboard packaging. Food samples or packages were efficiently extracted by pressurized liquid extraction using acetonitrile, and the extracts were directly injected onto the analytical system. The analysis was performed by multidimensional gas chromatography-mass spectrometry using a heart-cutting approach to reduce the background noise from complex matrices. The strategy employed two distinct cuts each containing its proper deuterated internal standard leading to accurate quantification. By integrating a cryofocusing effect, an enhancement in signal/noise ratio was achieved by a factor >10, which markedly decreased the sensitivity threshold. Moreover, baseline separation of the critical isomers allowed their unequivocal determination. The method was fully validated on cereal-based foodstuffs based upon an analysis of variance, and excellent performances were obtained at the decision limit making this method well suited for official food controls.

Abstract
Chemicals of emerging concern (CECs) are frequently used in cosmetic formulations and can potentially reach the environment at concentrations that may cause harm. A methodology was developed to assess over 120 chemicals assembled from product ingredient listings to identify and validate potential CECs in cosmetics, based on Annex XIII of REACH legislation. Ten potential CECs were identified: polydimethylsiloxane, butylated hydroxylanisole (BHA), butylated hydroxytoluene, triclosan, nano titanium dioxide, nano zinc oxide, butylparaben, diethyl phthalate, octinoxate methoxycinnamate and benzophenone. These chemicals were quantified based on their consumption and concentrations in cosmetics and percentage market penetration. The initial predicted environmental concentrations (PEC initial) were estimated to determine their exposure to the environment. With the exception of BHA, the PEC initial highlighted levels of exposure to the environment that triggered the need for further investigation of the chemicals. These chemicals were linked to cosmetics to highlight products with the potential to cause environmental harm. Skin care products had the highest quantities of CECs, with titanium dioxide and zinc oxide nanomaterials being dominant potential contaminants. Further research is required to assess the exposure pathways and fate of these chemicals to determine environmental risks associated with their use and disposal.

Abstract
Three simple and rapid spectrophotometric methods were developed for detection and trace determination of benzophenone (the main impurity) in phenytoin bulk powder and pharmaceutical formulations. The first method, zero-crossing first derivative spectrophotometry, depends on measuring the first derivative trough values at 257.6 nm for benzophenone. The second method, zero-crossing third derivative spectrophotometry, depends on measuring the third derivative peak values at 263.2 nm. The third method, ratio first derivative spectrophotometry, depends on measuring the peak amplitudes of the first derivative of the ratio spectra (the spectra of benzophenone divided by the spectrum of 5.0 μg/mL phenytoin solution) at 272 nm. The calibration graphs were linear over the range of 1-10 μg/mL. The detection limits of the first and the third derivative methods were found to be 0.04 μg/mL and 0.11 μg/mL and the quantitation limits were 0.13 μg/mL and 0.34 μg/mL, respectively, while for the ratio derivative method, the detection limit was 0.06 μg/mL and the quantitation limit was 0.18 μg/mL. The proposed methods were applied successfully to the assay of the studied drug in phenytoin bulk powder and certain pharmaceutical preparations. The results were statistically compared to those obtained using a polarographic method and were found to be in good agreement.

Abstract
Sarcomas are a heterogeneous group of tumors that may have many etiologies. The incidence of histologic subtypes differs significantly between children and adults. The increase in incidence may be due to improved registry systems, diagnostic tools, and pathologic definitions. Environmental causes may contribute to increased incidence. Genetic alternations may play a role in sarcoma development. As a result of rapidly evolving genomic and proteomic technologies, increased knowledge of the oncogenic mechanisms underlying sarcomagenesis is being generated. Understanding the mechanisms involved in sarcomagenesis is rudimentary. Insight into the molecular basis of sarcoma inception, proliferation, and dissemination hopefully will lead to more effective therapies.
