Abstract
This review combined scientific data regarding the use of genus Eugenia plants for the management of diabetes. Diabetes mellitus is a chronic metabolic disease mainly characterized by hyperglycaemia, which can lead to serious health complications. Scientists have been seeking therapeutic compounds in plants, reporting the species of the genus Eugenia as a potential source of phytochemicals with antidiabetic properties. In vitro and in vivo studies have proved that the bioactive compounds in the genus Eugenia can positively affect the biomarkers of diabetes. We discussed the phytochemical profile of the genus Eugenia and its mechanism of action on diabetes, which could modulate carbohydrate metabolism, glucose homeostasis, and insulin secretion, inhibit carbohydrases and reduce oxidative stress, suppressing the formation of advanced glycation end-products and protecting/regenerating pancreatic β-cells. Therefore, plants of the genus Eugenia showed therapeutic potential to be used in the treatment of diabetes and its comorbidities.

Abstract
Eugenia stipitata is a fruit native to the Brazilian Amazonian region, belonging to the Myrtaceae family whose chemical composition has been little evidenced. In this study, we evaluated for the first time the nutritional composition, bioactive compounds and antioxidant properties of two fractions of this fruit. It was observed that the edible fraction had a higher content of minerals such as K, Ca and Mg (827.66 ± 14.51; 107.16 ± 1.54; and 75.65 ± 1.28 mg 100 g-1 dw, respectively), sucrose (38.01 ± 2.94 mg g-1 dw), fructose (17.58 ± 0.80 mg g-1 dw), and maltotetraose (1.63 ± 0.09 mg g-1 dw). In this same fraction, about 30 volatile compounds were found, mainly biciclo(3.2.1)octan-3-one, 6 (2-hydroxyethyl)-, endo-; butanoic acid, 2-methyl-, hexyl ester and p-ocimene. In turn, the seed had the highest number of compounds identified by ESI-LTQ-MS/MS (including vanillic acid, gallic acid hexoside, catechin hexoside, luteolin hexoside, among others), higher content of phenolics (142.43 ± 0.82 mg GAE g-1 dw), flavonoids (43.73 ± 0.23 mg CE g-1 dw), and antioxidant capacity (139.59 ± 2.47; 447.94 ± 2.70; and 100.07 ± 10.50 µM TE g-1 dw for DPPH, ABTS, and ORAC, respectively). These results suggest that Eugenia stipitata has excellent nutritional value and great functional potential, and may contribute to a greater commercial exploitation of this fruit, not only in food, but also in the pharmaceutical and cosmetic industries.

Abstract
Vitamins are organic compounds essential for normal physiological functioning and they need to be provided in adequate amounts by the diet. They are nutrients mainly associated to fruit consumption, playing an important role in the cellular function, growth and development of individuals. The present study aimed to analyze levels of vitamins B, C and carotenoids of fruits from the agrobiodiversity of Northeastern Brazil, among them cajuí (Anacardium spp), murici (Byrsonima crassifolia (L.) Kunth), pequi (Caryocar coriaceum Wittm.), jenipapo (Genipa americana L.), mangaba (Hancornia speciosa Gomes), bacuri (Platonia insignis Mart.), cajá (Spondias mombin L.), umbu-cajá (Spondias bahiensis P. Carvalho, Van den Berg & M. Machado), umbu (Spondias tuberosa Arruda), pitanga (Eugenia uniflora L.), araçá (Psidium sobralianum Landrum & Proença). The vitamins were quantified using the analytical method High Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC). Vitamin B complex levels varied from 0.003 ± 0.01 mg/100 g to 6.107 ± 0.06 mg/100 g. Vitamin C ranged from 0.36 ± 0.06 mg/100 g to 253.92 ± 9.02 mg/100 g. Carotenoid values ranged from 0.12 ± 0.02 μg/100 g to 395.63 ± 113.69 μg/100 g. Thus, the profile of water-soluble vitamins and carotenoids of the fruits analyzed was quantified. Therefore, these fruits can provide varied amounts of vitamins important to human health. However, it is interesting for the individual to consume fruits in a diversified manner, avoiding monotony and thus guaranteeing the daily intake of more nutrients.

Abstract
Underexplored species have phytochemical potential for pharmacological and nutraceutical applications. The fruits of such species, including aracá (Psidium cattleianum Sabine), are rich in specialized metabolites with putative antioxidant and antimicrobial activity; therefore, the leaves of these species are also a potential source of bioactive compounds. In this study, araçazeiro leaves were extracted using an aqueous infusion (Al) and a pressurized liquid extraction system with water (PLE-W), ethanol (PLE-E), and 1:1 water:ethanol ratio combination (PLE-W:E). PLE-W:E yielded a greater diversity of extracted compounds. Nonetheless, all extracts showed inhibitory activity against pathogenic Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria and antioxidant activity in the in vitro thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS) and reactive oxygen species (ROS) assays with rat brain and yeast model systems. Thus, araçazeiro leaves can be exploited as a promising source of bioactive compounds.

Abstract
Polyphenols are compounds naturally present in fruits and vegetables that are gaining more and more attention due to their therapeutic effects and their potential technological applications. In this review, we intend to demonstrate the importance of some phenolic compounds, addressing their biological effects and potential for applications in various industrial fields. The intake of these compounds in appropriate concentrations can present promising effects in the prevention of diseases such as diabetes, obesity, Parkinson's, Alzheimer's, and others. They can also be used to improve the physicochemical properties of starch, in the preservation of foods, as natural dyes, prebiotic ingredients, hydrogels and nanocomplexes. In addition, these compounds have potential for innovation in the most diverse technological fields, including organic fine chemistry, basic materials chemistry, pharmaceuticals, food chemistry, chemical engineering, etc.

Abstract
Brazilian native fruits are a rich source of polyphenolic compounds that can act as anti-inflammatory and antioxidant agents. Here, we determined the polyphenolic composition, anti-inflammatory mechanism of action, antioxidant activity and systemic toxicity in Galleria mellonella larvae of Eugenia selloi B.D.Jacks. (synonym Eugenia neonitida Sobral) extract (Ese) and its polyphenol-rich fraction (F3) obtained through bioassay-guided fractionation. Phenolic compounds present in Ese and F3 were identified by LC-ESI-QTOF-MS. The anti-inflammatory activity of Ese and F3 was tested in vitro and in vivo through NF-κB activation, cytokine release and neutrophil migration assays. The samples were tested for their effects against reactive species (ROO•, O2•-, HOCl and NO•) and for their toxicity in Galleria mellonella larvae model. The presence of hydroxybenzoic acid, ellagitannins and flavonoids was identified. Ese and F3 reduced NF-κB activation, cytokine release and neutrophil migration, with F3 being three-fold more potent. Overall, F3 exhibited strong antioxidant effects against biologically relevant radicals, and neither Ese nor F3 were toxic to G. mellonella larvae. In conclusion, Ese and F3 revealed the presence of phenolic compounds that decreased the inflammatory parameters evaluated and inhibited reactive oxygen/nitrogen species. E. selloi is a novel source of bioactive compounds that may provide benefits for human health.
