Abstract
Organocatalysts promote a range of C-N bond forming reactions of amines with CO2 . Herein, we review these reactions and attempt to identify the unifying features of the catalysts that allows them to promote a multitude of seemingly unrelated reactions. Analysis of the literature shows that these reactions predominantly proceed by carbamate salt formation in the form [BaseH][RR'NCOO]. The anion of the carbamate salt acts as a nucleophile in hydrosilane reductions of CO2 , internal cyclization reactions or after dehydration as an electrophile in the synthesis of urea derivatives. The reactions are enhanced by polar aprotic solvents and can be either promoted or hindered by H-bonding interactions. The predominant role of all types of organic and salt catalysts (including ionic liquids, ILs) is the stabilization of the carbamate salt, mostly by acting as a base. Catalytic enhancement depends on the combination of the amine, the base strength, the solvent, steric factors, ion pairing and H-bonding. A linear relationship between the base strength and the reaction yield has been demonstrated with IL catalysts in the synthesis of formamides and quinazoline-2,4-diones. The role of organocatalysts in the reactions indicates that all bases of sufficient strength should be able to catalyze the reactions. However, a physical limit to the extent of a purely base catalyzed reaction mechanism should exist, which needs to be identified, understood and overcome by synergistic or alternative methods.

Abstract
Three classes of organosilicas (DMO, OMOs and PMOs) containing immobilized multi-hydroxyl bis-(quaternary ammonium) iodide salts were prepared and tested in the cycloaddition of CO2 and epoxides. Owing to its higher surface area, pore volume and optimum nucleophilicity of the iodide ion, OMO-2 with two hydroxyl groups was found to be the most active catalyst. For substrates that are easy to activate such as propylene oxide, 1,2-epoxybutane and epichlorohydrin, excellent yields and selectivities were obtained under mild reaction conditions (0.5 MPa CO2, 50 °C and 10-15 h). Moreover, OMO-2 showed very good catalytic properties (yield ≥ 93% and selectivity ≥ 98%), and excellent chemical and textural stability in the synthesis of 1,2-butylene carbonate over 5 cycles.

Abstract
Hydroxyl- and carboxyl-functionalized imidazolium halides are used as efficient bifunctional organocatalysts for the synthesis of cyclic carbonates from CO2 and epoxides under mild reaction conditions. Control experiments suggest that the cycloaddition reaction is realized by the combination of the nucleophilic halide anions with hydroxyl and carboxyl groups as hydrogen bond donors. Moreover, the bifunctional organocatalysts can be easily recycled five times by simple filtration; however, a loss of activity was observed.

Abstract
Carbon dioxide produced by human activities is one of the main contributions responsible for the greenhouse effect, which is modifying the Earth’s climate. Therefore, post-combustion CO2 capture and its conversion into high value-added chemicals are integral parts of today’s green industry. On the other hand, carbon dioxide is a ubiquitous, cheap, abundant, non-toxic, non-flammable and renewable C1 source. Among CO2 usages, this review aims to summarize and discuss the advances in the reaction of CO2, in the synthesis of cyclic carbonates, carbamates, and ureas appeared in the literature since 2017.

Abstract
Ionic metal-organic frameworks (IMOFs) that integrate synergistic Lewis-acid sites (intrinsic metal centers of the frameworks) and nucleophilic anions (halides encapsulated within pores) are intriguing platforms for the design of fully heterogeneous catalytic systems for cycloaddition of CO2 to epoxides. A new, facile and versatile synthetic approach has been used to fabricate triazolium-based IMOFs for the first time. The approach makes use of azide-alkyne click chemistry and subsequent N-alkylation to post-synthetically create a cationic triazolium ring and introduce exchangeable counteranions at the same time. The IMOFs are efficient and recyclable heterogeneous catalysts for CO2 conversion under mild and cocatalyst-free conditions. In particular, the click-accessible triazolium ring provides a handle to incorporate further functionality. The MIL-101-tzmOH-Br catalyst, which integrates hydrogen-bonding hydroxy groups besides metal centers and bromide anions, shows superior catalytic performance under mild conditions.

Abstract
We report a ruthenium-modified zeolite which efficiently transforms propylene carbonate to propylene glycol and methane, under solvent-free conditions. The catalyst achieved high product selectivity and no significant ageing effect was observed after multiple cycles. The resulting liquid product (water-containing glycol) can be directly used as anti-freeze solution and the gas phase can directly be used as an energy carrier in the form of H2 -enriched methane. This process efficiently bridges energy storage and an important chemical synthesis under sustainable (CO2 consuming) conditions.

Abstract
Easily available and inexpensive FeIII carbamates were employed in the solvent-free synthesis of a series of cyclic carbonates from epoxides and CO2 at room temperature and atmospheric pressure, in the presence of a cocatalyst. Different experimental conditions (type and concentration of catalyst and cocatalyst, as well as reaction time) were investigated: Fe(O2 CNEt2 )3 and NBu4 Br acted as the best catalyst/cocatalyst combination, allowing the formation of propylene carbonate and 1,2-butylene carbonate with quantitative yield and selectivity in 24 h. According to NMR and DFT studies, the reaction proceeds with the dynamic trapping of carbon dioxide as a carbamato ligand.

Abstract
This work describes a facile approach to modify metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) with ionic liquids (ILs), rendering them as useful heterogeneous catalysts for CO2 chemical fixation. An amino-functionalized imidazolium-based ionic liquid is firmly grafted into the porous MOF, MIL-101-SO3H by the acid-base attraction between positively charged ammonium groups on the IL and negatively charged sulfonate groups from the MOF. Analyses by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, 1H NMR, and N2 sorption experiments reveal the MOF-supported ionic liquid (denoted as IL@MOF) material remains intact while functioning as a recyclable heterogeneous catalyst that can efficiently convert CO2 and epichlorohydrin into chloropropene carbonate without the addition of a cocatalyst.

Abstract
Carbonated methyl soyates have been successfully prepared by cycloaddition of carbon dioxide (CO2) to epoxidized methyl soyates in tetrabutylammonium bromide (TBAB)-based deep eutectic solvents (DES). Experimental parameters, i.e., reaction temperature, reaction time, CO2 pressure and TBAB concentration were evaluated. The different reaction conditions have a significant influence on the yields of carbonated methyl soyates. The use of TBAB-based DES (tetrabutylammonium bromide/triethylene glycol) significantly shortened the reaction time of the cycloaddition of CO2 to epoxidized methyl soyates. FT-IR and NMR analysis indicated that 95% of the yield of the five-membered cyclic carbonated methyl soyates were obtained at 120°C with 1.0 MPa pressure of CO2.

Abstract
Cyclic carbonates as industrial commodities offer a viable nonredox carbon dioxide fixation, and suitable heterogeneous catalysts are vital for their widespread implementation. Here, we report a highly efficient heterogeneous catalyst for CO2 addition to epoxides based on a newly identified active catalytic pocket consisting of pyridine, imine, and phenol moieties. The polymeric, metal-free catalyst derived from this active site converts less-reactive styrene oxide under atmospheric pressure in quantitative yield and selectivity to the corresponding carbonate. The catalyst does not need additives, solvents, metals, or co-catalysts, can be reused at least 10 cycles without the loss of activity, and scaled up easily to a kilogram scale. Density functional theory calculations reveal that the nucleophilicity of pyridine base gets stronger due to the conjugated imines and H-bonding from phenol accelerates the reaction forward by stabilizing the intermediate.

Abstract
Membrane technologies enable the facile separation of complex mixtures of gases, vapours, liquids and/or solids under mild conditions. Simultaneous chemical transformations can also be achieved in membranes by using catalytically active membrane materials or embedded catalysts, in so-called membrane reactors. A particular class of membranes containing or composed of ionic liquids (ILs) or polymeric ionic liquids (pILs) have recently emerged. These membranes often exhibit superior transport and separation properties to those of classical polymeric membranes. ILs and pILs have also been extensively studied as separation solvents, catalysts and co-catalysts in similar applications for which membranes are employed. In this review, after introducing ILs and their applications in catalysis, catalytic membranes and recent advances in membrane separation processes based on ILs are described. Finally, the nascent concept of catalytic IL membranes is highlighted, in which catalytically active ILs/pILs are incorporated into membrane technologies to act as a catalytic separation layer.

Abstract
There is a growing interest in sustainable heterogeneous catalysts based on organic polymers. Here, we describe a series of polyimidazolium salt catalysts, prepared from the direct reaction of arene-bridged bis- and tris-alkyl halides with trimethylsilylimidazole. The polyimidazolium salts were characterized by spectroscopic and analytical techniques and it was found that their morphology and porosity could be controlled by adjusting the steric parameters of the spacer in the alkyl-halide starting materials. Moreover, the polymers are excellent heterogeneous organocatalysts for the cycloaddition of CO2 to epoxides to afford cyclic carbonates at atmospheric pressure under solvent-free conditions. The polymer catalysts exhibit long-term stability and may be recycled and reused at least 10 times.

Abstract
The use of CO2 as a C1 building block will be of essential importance in the future. In this context the synthesis of cyclic carbonates from epoxides and CO2 gained great attention recently. These products are valuable compounds in a variety of chemical fields. The development of new catalysts and catalytic systems for this atom-economic, scalable, and industrially relevant reaction is a highly active research field. Over the past 17 years great advances have been made in this area of research. This chapter covers the survey of the important known classes of homogeneous catalysts for the addition of CO2 to epoxides. Besides pioneering work, recent developments and procedures that allow this transformation under mild reaction conditions (reaction temperatures of ≤100 °C and/or CO2 pressures of 0.1 MPa) are especially emphasized.
