Hierarchically structured TiO2/PAN nanofibrous membranes for high-efficiency air filtration and toluene degradation

Electrospun CuO-ZnO nanohybrid: Tuning the nanostructure for improved amperometric detection of hydrogen peroxide as a non-enzymatic sensor

Hydrogen peroxide (H₂O₂) is a by-product of some biochemical processes which is catalyzed by enzymes such as glucose oxidase (GOx), cholesterol oxidase (ChoOx), etc and its overproduction in living cells can trigger cancer growth and various diseases. Therefore, H₂O₂ sensing is of great importance in the determination of diseases as well as industries and environmental health plans. We produced ZnO-CuO nanofibers by electrospinning method for non-enzymatic electrochemical H₂O₂ sensing. The sensing properties of the carbon paste electrode (CPE) modified with ZnO (0.3 wt%)/CuO (0.7 wt%) nanofibers (named as ZnO3-CuO7) for detection of H₂O₂ were explored in phosphate-buffered saline (PBS) at pH ∼ 7.4 solution. The ZnO3-CuO7 nanofiber exhibited the lowest charge transfer resistance and the highest electrocatalytic performance among other modified electrodes for detection of H₂O₂ and considered as an optimized sample. The effect of scan rate and H₂O₂ concentration in the reduction process were also investigated by cyclic voltammetry (CV) and the mechanism for the electrochemical reaction of H₂O₂ at the surface of the optimized electrode was studied. The diffusion coefficient of H₂O₂ and the catalytic rate constant were evaluated by chronoamperometry as 1.65 × 10^-5 cm² s^-1 and 6 × 10³ cm³ mol^-1 s^-1, respectively. Furthermore, amperometric detection of H₂O₂ with a low detection limit of 2.4 µM and a wide linear range of 3 to 530 µM were obtained. Meanwhile, the optimized electrode displayed no recognizable response towards some biomolecules such as ascorbic acid, uric acid, dopamine and glucose. The obtained results confirmed that the modified electrode shows high sensitivity and selectivity as a H₂O₂ biosensor with improved reproducibility and stability.

One-pot synthesis of catalytic molybdenum based nanocomposite nano-fiber membranes for aerosol air remediation

The development of fibrous air filters exhibiting high air filtration efficiency, low energy consumption, and self-cleaning properties is a critical challenge to generate the next generation of resilient air filtration systems. Nano-fibrous mats typically exhibit higher particle capture efficiency but may also lead to higher airflow resistance compared to macro-fibrous materials due to their tighter structure. In this paper, novel catalytic membranes mats were fabricated through a one-pot synthesis from ammonium tetrathiomolybdate (ATTM) doped poly(acrylonitrile) (PAN) nanofibers for sub-micron diameter aerosol particle removal. The presence of ATTM as a dopant in conjunction with a PAN polymeric matrix was found to not only enhance the air filtration performance by increasing aerosol particle removal down to 300 nm, but also increase the photocatalytic properties of the PAN material. The enhanced separation properties compared to bare polymeric PAN nanofibrous membranes were attributed to surface nanotexturation of the fibers, leading to protrusions and pores across the nano-fiber structures, thus leading to more permeable and lightweight membranes with higher particle capture capacities. The samples were benchmarked against commercial glass fiber air filters and found to offer higher filtration efficiency, lower pressure drop, and higher quality factor than the commercial filters. Specifically, the quality factors of the catalytic nano-fiber membranes were found to be up to four times higher than that of the benchmarked commercial air filters for PM_2.5 particles, while two times higher for 300 nm sized contaminants. The presence of the ATTM across the PAN matrix was also found to enhance the photocatalytic activity of the membranes by up to 130% compared to the bare PAN reference nanofibers. This novel strategy opens avenues to engineering advanced multifunctional catalytic membranes, to capture toxic particulate matter from air while offering self-cleaning properties when exposed to sunlight.

Formation and characterization of polytetrafluoroethylene nanofiber membranes for high-efficiency fine particulate filtration

Polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) porous membranes are widely used for high-temperature filtration. The polytetrafluoroethylene nanofiber membranes for fine particulate filtration were prepared by sintering the precursor electrospun polytetrafluoroethylene/polyvinyl/boric acid alcohol composite membranes. The effects of PTFE/PVA mass ratio and sintering temperature on the morphology and properties of the prepared membranes were investigated to obtain the PTFE nanofibers with different diameters, and the film has been characterized by SEM, TG, XRD, FT-IR, and EDS, and the mechanical and hydrophobic properties of the membranes were also investigated. The PTFE nanofiber membranes after sintering had nanofiber and nanowire structures. Moreover, the membranes were tested in air filtration. The filtration efficiency and pressure drop were tested to evaluate the membrane permeability and separation properties. The results showed a high filtration efficiency (98%) and a low pressure drop (90 Pa) for 300 nm sodium chloride aerosol particles at a 30 L min⁻¹ airflow velocity and the hydrophobic membranes showed durable self-cleaning properties, which suggested that the PTFE nanofiber membranes were a promising candidate for high temperature filtration applications.

Synthesis, Morphologies and Building Applications of Nanostructured Polymers

Nanostructured polymers (NSPs) are polymeric materials in the size of nanoscale, normally consisting of nanoparticles, nanofibers, nanowires, nanospheres and other morphologies. Polymer nanoparticles (PNPs) can be fabricated either by physical methods (i.e., solvent evaporation, nanoprecipitation, salting out) or by direct nanosynthesis, using micro- or nanoemulsions with nanoreactor compartments to perform polymerization. Polymer nanofibers (PNFs) can be produced via various techniques and the most commonly used approach is electrospinning, whereby a charged solution of a polymer when exposed to an opposite high electric field is pulled into long thin nanofibers. NSPs in general exhibit enhanced properties such as excellent structural and mechanical properties, making them promising candidates for some particular building applications. A variety of PNFs have been developed and used for noise and air pollution filtration. Moreover, PNFs can also be fabricated with phase change materials which are usually employed for thermal energy storage in construction industry. In this review, we will summarize the morphologies and nanosynthesis methods of NSPs, in particular, PNPs and PNFs. In addition, representative NSPs mainly used in construction are introduced for building applications.
