Recent progress in integrated fixed-film activated sludge process for wastewater treatment: A review

Talaromyces cellulolyticus as a promising candidate for biofilm construction and treatment of textile wastewater

Screening of microorganisms with broad-spectrum adaptability to extreme acid-base conditions and highperformance is essential for the construction of high-efficient biochemical wastewater treatment system. Herein, an acid-tolerant fungus isolated from acid medium was successfully identified through micromorphological observation and molecular characterization. The isolated fungus matched well with the filamentous fungus and was eventually identified as Talaromyces cellulolyticus. Considering the wide-range adaptability to pH condition (2.0-9.0), high cellulase activity (11.25 U mL^-1), ideal biofilm-forming property (17.87 mg cm^-3) on the surface of ceramsites, high tolerance to metal ions, and potential adsorption performance for aniline dyes, T. cellulolyticus issuitable for the construction of biofilm treatment system and treatment of textile wastewater based on the investigation of the removal efficiency of chemical oxygen demand and chromaticity of the synthetic textile wastewater. A promising candidate filamentous fungus for the treatment of textile wastewater was provided.

Recent advancements in the biological treatment of high strength ammonia wastewater

The estimated global population growth of 81 million people per year, combined with increased rates of urbanization and associated industrial processes, result in volumes of high strength ammonia wastewater that cannot be treated in a cost-effective or sustainable manner using the floc-based conventional activated sludge approach of nitrification and denitrification. Biofilm and aerobic granular sludge technologies have shown promise to significantly improve the performance of biological nitrogen removal systems treating high strength wastewater. This is partly due to enhanced biomass retention and their ability to sustain diverse microbial populations with juxtaposing growth requirements. Recent research has also demonstrated the value of hybrid systems with heterogeneous bioaggregates to mitigate biofilm and granule instability during long-term operation. In the context of high strength ammonia wastewater treatment, conventional nitrification-denitrification is hampered by high energy costs and greenhouse gas emissions. Anammox-based processes such as partial nitritation-anammox and partial denitrification-anammox represent more cost-effective and sustainable methods of removing reactive nitrogen from wastewater. There is also growing interest in the use of photosynthetic bacteria for ammonia recovery from high strength waste streams, such that nitrogen can be captured and concentrated in its reactive form and recycled into high value products. The purpose of this review is to explore recent advancements and emerging approaches related to high strength ammonia wastewater treatment.

Membrane Filtration as Post-Treatment of Rotating Biological Contactor for Wastewater Treatment

A rotating biological contactor (RBC) offers a low energy footprint but suffers from performance instability, making it less popular for domestic wastewater treatment. This paper presents a study on an RBC integrated with membrane technology in which membrane filtration was used as a post-treatment step (RBC–ME) to achieve enhanced biological performance. The RBC and RBC–ME systems were operated under different hydraulic retention times (HRTs) of 12, 18, 24, and 48 h, and the effects of HRT on biological performance and effluent filterability were assessed. The results show that RBC–ME demonstrates superior biological performance than the standalone RBC. The RBC–ME bioreactor achieved 87.9 ± 3.2% of chemical oxygen demand (COD), 98.9 ± 1.1% ammonium, 45.2 ± 0.7% total nitrogen (TN), and 97.9 ± 0.1% turbidity removals. A comparison of the HRTs showed that COD and TN removal efficiency was the highest at 48 h, with 92.4 ± 2.4% and 48.6 ± 1.3% removal efficiencies, respectively. The longer HRTs also lead to better RBC effluent filterability. The steady-state permeability increased respectively by 2.4%, 9.5%, and 19.1% at HRTs of 18, 24, and 48 h, compared to 12 h. Our analysis of membrane fouling shows that fouling resistance decreased at higher HRTs. Overall, RBC–ME offered a promising alternative for traditional suspended growth processes with higher microbial activity and enhanced biological performance, which is in line with the requirements of sustainable development and environment-friendly treatment.

Dairy wastewater processing and automatic control for waste recovery at the municipal wastewater treatment plant based on modelling investigations

Based on the calibrated model for an Anaerobic-Anoxic-Oxic (A²O) municipal wastewater treatment plant (WWTP), this research investigated and proposed feasible solutions, control system configurations and optimal operating conditions for the dairy wastewater processing. The steady state study on adding different daily amounts of dairy wastewater in the WWTP water line revealed the most efficient amount to be treated by finding a minimum of the total nitrogen concentration in the water effluent. The dynamic investigations on adding different daily amounts of diary wastewater demonstrated the incentives of the proposed cascade control system configurations, based on the ammonia or nitrates concentration control in the aerated reactors, associated to nitrates and nitrites concentration control in the anoxic reactor. The best periods of time and duration for scheduling the dairy wastewater processing were searched and found. Preliminary results showed the incentives of the additional dairy wastewater distribution during 2 h, at the highest influent concentration moments. Further investigations, relying on the genetic algorithm optimization method revealed that better daily scheduling of the dairy wastewater addition may be obtained. Compared to normal operation, the optimal scheduling program of the dairy wastewater treatment showed an overall performance index improvement of 13.36%, when the daily 1:52 p.m. moment of time and the duration of about 1 h program, found by optimization, were applied. Results demonstrate the dual incentives of the carbon and nutrients recovery, associated to the energy and effluent quality benefits on WWTP operation.

A Study on the Reaction Kinetics of Anaerobic Microbes Using Batch Anaerobic Sludge Technique for Beverage Industrial Wastewater

In this study, a low-cost, efficient, and environmentally friendly anaerobic sludge process for the treatment of industrial beverage wastewater was investigated to analyze the effect of bacteria growth on the degradation of organic matter (chemical oxygen demand). Additionally, the mechanism, interactions between the microbe’s growth, and operating conditions of an anaerobic batch reactor along with the wastewater treatment efficiency were evaluated via microbial kinetics. The kinetic coefficients based on chemical oxygen demand (COD) by conventional techniques such as kinetic coefficients growth yield (0.46 mg VSS/mg COD), saturation coefficient (3500 mg/L COD), the maximum rate of substrate utilization per unit mass of biomass (0.0066 mg/L COD), growth rate by Monod equation, M (0.03833 L/h), and maximum growth rate, μm (0.03672 L/h) were calculated. The results show a higher rate of substrate degradation (0.54 day−1) due to the high COD removal efficiency (CRE) of 99.31% during 13 days that was achieved, which can be attributed to the active involvement of anaerobic microbes in the process of degradation. Based on these results, it can be concluded that the current study can be used as an effective way to analyze the industrial beverage wastewater at commercial levels.

Magnetic water treatment in a wastewater treatment plant: Part I - sorption and magnetic particles

The application of magnetic sorption to treat wastewaters is nowadays seen as a potential industrial method. In this work we apply magnetite particles to remediate real wastewater samples, with several contaminants competing for the same active sorption center at the same time. We also apply our studies at three different sampling points of a Wastewater Treatment Plant. In general terms, magnetite particles have shown a very good behaviour concerning the reduction of detergents and COD, while phosphates and total nitrogen, and the majority of heavy metals are high to moderately removed. The influence of the type of wastewater (i.e., sampling point) has also shown to be important especially for high concentration of contaminants.

Characterization of domestic wastewater released from 'green' households and field study of the performance of onsite septic tanks retrofitted into aerobic bioreactors in cold climate

This study aimed to investigate the efficacy of private septic systems retrofitted into aerobic bioreactors with 'SludgeHammer' technology. In addition, the study attempted to characterize the strength of domestic wastewater released from 'green' households practicing water conservation strategies. Ten retrofitted onsite septic systems were studied in the Edmonton area, Alberta (AB) Canada during winter. These systems could remove BOD₅ and TSS by 92 ± 5 and 92 ± 6% respectively which, according to Albertan regulatory standards, were characteristic removal efficiencies of the secondary treatment in the subsequent drain field. These removal efficiencies were remarkable given the strength of the influent wastewater. The raw wastewater carried significantly high pollutant concentrations (1160 ± 350 mg BOD₅/L, 1653 ± 1174 mg TSS/L, 99 ± 19 mg NH₄⁺-N/L, 100 ± 56 mg TN/L, and 39 ± 28 mg PO₄^3--P/L), characterizing it as high-strength domestic wastewater. Mixing provided by the aerator could only suspend 1/34^th (3% m/m) of the solids in the bioreactor and consequently released significantly low solid concentrations (195 ± 206 mg TSS/L) into the final treatment component. As such, this technology did not impair the natural function of septic tanks or did not create any unintended excessive solid loading on drain field as a consequence of the added mixing energies provided by the active aeration. Nitrogen balance suggested the possibility of simultaneous nitrification and denitrification (SND) in the aerobic bioreactors. In some cases, PO₄^3--P removal efficiency was as high as that in enhanced biological phosphate removal (EBPR) process (81-97%). Phosphorus balance estimated that non-assimilative pathways (i.e., EBPR + biologically induced phosphate precipitation (BIPP)) contributed 50-99% to overall phosphorus removal in the system. Long HRTs, high influent BOD₅ and anaerobic/aerobic zoning in the bioreactor most likely provided favorable conditions for SND and high phosphorus removal efficiencies in the retrofitted onsite wastewater treatment systems (OWTS).

Domestic Wastewater Treatment: A Comparison between an Integrated Hybrid UASB-IFAS System and a Conventional UASB-AS System

The current study presents a detailed evaluation and comparison between two integrated anaerobic–aerobic systems for biological wastewater treatment under equal conditions in all aspects (wastewater characteristics, climatic conditions, reactor sizing, and even the measurement methods). The two examined systems are (i) a hybrid upflow anaerobic sludge blanket (hybrid UASB) coupled with integrated fixed-film activated sludge (IFAS) and (ii) a conventional UASB coupled with activated sludge (AS). The present comparative study aims to evaluate and assess the effect of adding carrier-filling media on the performance of the classical integrated UASB-AS. The two parallel pilot-scale systems, hybrid UASB-IFAS and UASB-AS, were installed and operated at a wastewater treatment plant. Three sets of experiments were conducted to examine the influence of the hydraulic retention time (HRT) on the consequent organic and hydraulic loads, temperature, and recirculation rate of the proposed systems. The main results showed that the two investigated systems had a comparably high efficiency for the removal of organic matters and ammonia. Moreover, a paired sample t-test indicated there was a statistically significant effect of the filling media, and the performance of the hybrid UASB-IFAS increased significantly compared with that of the UASB-AS system. An additional benefit of the filling media on the hybrid system was its high stability when changing the organic and hydraulic loads. The optimum HRT was 6 h, with a total chemical oxygen demand (TCOD) percentage removal of approximately 95% in both examined systems. Treatment of sewage under high and low temperatures indicated that increasing the temperature improved the efficiency of the overall process for both systems significantly.

Statistical methods for assessing water quality after treatment on a sequencing batch reactor

Given that water scarcity is a big issue nowadays, wastewater treatment is necessary for the future water use and the prevention of environmental contamination. In this context, this study presents the results of the statistical analysis of ten water parameters before and after the water cleaning in a wastewater treatment plant (WWTP). The influent biodegradability is assessed by computing the BOD₅/COD ratio. New momentary and global efficiency indices are introduced for the evaluation of the pollutants' removal efficiency. Five classes of efficiencies (excellent, good, fair, marginal, and poor) are also proposed for the evaluation of WWTP's performances. The study shows that the WWTP's efficiency is good - when working with six water parameters - and marginal - when working with ten parameters. Small efficiencies of nitrates, total dissolved solids, and chlorine removal are noticed. Statistical distributions of ten water parameters in the influent and effluent are fitted and tested by the Kolmogorov-Smirnov and Chi-squared tests. They are utilized for computing the probability of exceeding the admissible limits of water parameters in the effluent, which can be used as a warning tool for improving the WWTP's performance.

Upgrading a large and centralised municipal wastewater treatment plant with sequencing batch reactor technology for integrated nutrient removal and phosphorus recovery: Environmental and economic life cycle performance

Although nutrient removal and recovery from municipal wastewater are desirable to protect phosphorus resource and water-bodies from eutrophication, it is unclear how much environmental and economic benefits and burdens it might cause. This study evaluated the environmental and economic life cycle performance of three different upgraded Processes A, B and C with commercially available technologies for nutrient removal and phosphorus recovery based on an existing Malaysian wastewater treatment plant with a sequencing batch reactor technology and diluted municipal wastewater. It is found that the integration of nutrient removal, phosphorus recovery and electricity generation in all upgraded processes reduced eutrophication potential by 62-76%, and global warming potential by 7-22%, which, however, were gained at the cost of increases in human toxicity, acidification, abiotic depletion (fossil fuel) and freshwater ecotoxicity potentials by an average of 23%. New technologies for nutrient removal and phosphorus recovery are thus needed to achieve holistic rather than some environmental benefits at the expense of others. In addition, the study on two different functional units (FU), i.e. per m³ treated wastewater and per kg struvite recovered, shows that FU affected environmental assessment results, but the upgraded Process C had the least overall environmental burden with either of FUs, suggesting the necessity to use different functional units when comparing and selecting different technologies with two functions such as wastewater treatment and struvite production to confirm the best process configuration. The total life cycle costs of Processes A, B and C were 10.7%, 29.8% and 28.1%, respectively, higher than the existing process due to increased capital and operating costs. Therefore, a trade-off between environmental benefits and cost has to be balanced for technology selection or new integrated technologies have to be developed to achieve environmentally sustainable wastewater treatment economically.
