MIL series of metal organic frameworks (MOFs) as novel adsorbents for heavy metals in water: A review

Study on the Adsorption Mechanism of Cobalt and Nickel in Manganese Sulfate by δ-MnO2

Manganese has excellent performance in removing metal ions from aqueous solutions, but there are few studies on the adsorption and removal of heavy metal impurities in metal salt solutions. In this paper, the adsorption of cobalt and nickel ions in MnSO₄ solution by δ-MnO₂ prepared from two different manganese sources was studied. The optimum adsorption conditions were as follows: When the concentration of Mn²⁺ was 20 g/L, δ-MnO₂ addition was 10 g/L, Co²⁺ concentration was 80 mg/L, Ni²⁺ concentration was 80 mg/L, reaction time was 60 min, reaction temperature was 80 °C, and pH value was 7, the adsorption rate of Co²⁺ and Ni²⁺ reached more than 80%. The manganese dioxide adsorbed by heavy metals was analyzed and detected. The results showed that MnOOH appeared in the phases of both kinds of δ-MnO₂, and their morphologies were dense rod-like structures with different lengths and flake-like structures of fine particles. Co and Ni were distributed on the surface and gap of MnO₂ particles, and the atomic percentage of Co was slightly higher than that of Ni. The new vibration peaks appeared near wave numbers of 2668.32, 1401.00, and 2052.19 cm^-1, which were caused by the complexation of cations such as Co^2 + and Ni^2 + with hydroxyl groups. Some cobalt and nickel appeared on the surface of δ-MnO₂, and the surface oxygen increased after adsorption. The above characterization revealed that the adsorption of cobalt and nickel in manganese sulfate by δ-MnO₂ was realized by the reaction of its surface hydroxyl with metal ions (M) to form ≡SOMOH.

Facile preparation of uniform-sized covalent organic framework nanoflowers as versatile sample-pretreatment platforms for sensitive and specific determination of hazardous substances

Covalent-organic frameworks (COFs) have lately received extensive interest for their outstanding performance, especially to adsorption of hazards, while easy-preparation of uniform-sized COFs hold a great challenge. This research presented a simple synthesis method of flower-shaped COF (nanoflower) with strong hydrophobic surface at room temperature. Taking advantage of its easy-prepared and uniform-sized features, we proposed a versatile and efficient sample-pretreatment platform by employing the nanoflower COF for affinity adsorption of various hydrophobic biotoxins and further surface imprinting for selective enrichment of specific biotoxin (COF@MIP), respectively. The COF@MIP was integrating COF with molecular imprinting technique to achieve selective identification of sterigmatocystin (ST) with high specificity and sensitivity. They both exhibited well reusability, preserving 81% of initial activity after being used for six cycles. The as-prepared materials coupled with offline solid phase extraction (SPE) and high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) were successfully applied to five common cereals with good recoveries in the range of 70.3-100.7%. Moreover, the principle of versatile sample pretreatment and detection platform based on the facile-prepared and uniform-sized COF nanoflower would be easily extended to other hazards. It provided a prospective approach for the pretreatment and determination of hazardous substances with low level in complex sample matrix.

Application of Metal–Organic Framework in Diagnosis and Treatment of Diabetes

Diabetes-related chronic wounds are often accompanied by a poor wound-healing environment such as high glucose, recurrent infections, and inflammation, and standard wound treatments are fairly limited in their ability to heal these wounds. Metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) have been developed to improve therapeutic outcomes due to their ease of engineering, surface functionalization, and therapeutic properties. In this review, we summarize the different synthesis methods of MOFs and conduct a comprehensive review of the latest research progress of MOFs in the treatment of diabetes and its wounds. State-of-the-art in vivo oral hypoglycemic strategies and the in vitro diagnosis of diabetes are enumerated and different antimicrobial strategies (including physical contact, oxidative stress, photothermal, and related ions or ligands) and provascular strategies for the treatment of diabetic wounds are compared. It focuses on the connections and differences between different applications of MOFs as well as possible directions for improvement. Finally, the potential toxicity of MOFs is also an issue that we cannot ignore.

Removal of Benzene and Toluene from Synthetic Wastewater by Adsorption onto Magnetic Zeolitic Imidazole Framework Nanocomposites

Considering the risk associated with exposure to benzene and toluene in water resources, researchers have been motivated to conduct studies to remove them from aqueous solutions. Thus, by performing the present study, the potential of Fe₃O₄/zeolite imidazolate framework nanoparticles (Fe₃O₄@ZIF-8) was evaluated for the adsorption of benzene and toluene. Accordingly, the solution pH, Fe₃O₄@ZIF-8 dosage, mixing time, concentration of benzene and toluene, and temperature, were the parameters considered for conducting the batch experiments, for which their effect on adsorption efficiency was evaluated. Our conducted experiments introduced the neutral pH as the best pH range to obtain the maximum removal. Fitting the adsorption data into the various models revealed the aptness of the Langmuir isotherm equation in describing experimental information and highest adsorption capacity; for benzene it was 129.4, 134.2, 137.3, and 148.2 mg g^-1, but for toluene it was 118.4, 125.2, 129.6, and 133.1 mg g^-1, for temperature 20, 30, 40, and 50 °C, respectively. Using obtained optimal conditions, the adsorption efficiencies of benzene and toluene were obtained to be 98.4% and 93.1%, respectively. Kinetic studies showed acceptable coefficients for PSO kinetics and confirmed its suitability. Also, the recyclability results showed that for six consecutive periods of the adsorption-desorption process, the percentage of removal decreased by only 6% for benzene and toluene. Moreover, calculating thermodynamic parameter changes for benzene and toluene removal confirmed the favorability and spontaneity of the studied process and its endothermic nature. Considering the above findings, Fe₃O₄@ZIF-8 was found to be an operative adsorbent for removing pollutants.

Tunable 2D Hybrid Perovskites with Pd(II) Adsorption and Semiconducting Properties

Layered hybrid perovskites, due to their broad application potential in optical, electrical, and luminescence fields, are attracting increasing attention. Herein, we report two novel two-dimensional hybrid organic-inorganic perovskites [C₅H₁₀N₂S]PbBr₄ (1) and [C₅H₁₀N₂S]PbI₄ (2) ([C₅H₁₀N₂S]²⁺ is 3-ethylaminothiazolium), which possess phase transition and semiconductor properties. Intriguingly, 1 has semiconductor properties with an optical band gap of 2.70 eV and a photocurrent to dark current ratio of 50 for the photoresponse. By varying the halogen, the band gap of 2 is significantly reduced to 2.06 eV and the photocurrent to dark current ratio of the photoresponse reaches 10⁴. Moreover, compounds 1 and 2 are able to adsorb Pd(II) resulting from the presence of -SH groups in the cation. The adsorption of Pd(II) can turn a semiconductor into an insulator, weaken the fluorescence intensity, and cause the phase transition behavior to disappear. This work has remarkable implications for the continuous development of hybrid perovskites with phase transitions, metal adsorption, and semiconductor properties.

Simultaneous Removal of Heavy Metals (Cu, Cd, Cr, Ni, Zn and Pb) from Aqueous Solutions Using Thermally Treated Romanian Zeolitic Volcanic Tuff

Increased concentrations of heavy metals in the environment are of public health concern, their removal from waters receiving considerable interest. The aim of this paper was to study the simultaneous adsorption of heavy metals (Cu, Cd, Cr, Ni, Zn and Pb) from aqueous solutions using the zeolitic volcanic tuffs as adsorbents. The effect of thermal treatment temperature, particle size and initial metal concentrations on the metal ions sorption was investigated. The selectivity of used zeolite for the adsorption of studied heavy metals followed the order: Pb > Cr > Cu > Zn > Cd > Ni. The removal efficiency of the heavy metals was strongly influenced by the particle sizes, the samples with smaller particle size (0−0.05 mm) being more efficient in heavy metals removal than those with larger particle size (1−3 mm). Generally, no relevant changes were observed in heavy metals removal efficiency for the treatment temperatures of 200 °C and 350 °C. Moreover, at a higher temperature (550 °C), a decrease in the removal efficiencies was observed. The Cd, Zn, Cu, Cr, Zn and Ni sorption was best described by Langmuir model according to the high values of correlation coefficient. The pseudo-first-order kinetic model presented the best correlation of the experimental data.

Peroxymonosulphate Activation by Basolite® F-300 for Escherichia coli Disinfection and Antipyrine Degradation

In this study, the removal of persistent emerging and dangerous pollutants (pharmaceuticals and pathogens) in synthetic wastewater was evaluated by the application of heterogeneous Advanced Oxidation Processes. To do that, a Metal-Organic Framework (MOF), Basolite® F-300 was selected as a catalyst and combined with peroxymonosulfate (PMS) as oxidants in order to generate sulphate radicals. Several key parameters such as the PMS and Basolite® F-300 concentration were evaluated and optimized using a Central Composite Experimental Design for response surface methodology for the inactivation of Escherichia coli. The assessment of the degradation of an analgesic and antipyretic pharmaceutical, antipyrine, revealed that is necessary to increase the concentration of PMS and amount of Basolite® F-300, in order to diminish the treatment time. Finally, the PMS-Basolite® F-300 system can be used for at least four cycles without a reduction in its ability to disinfect and degrade persistent emerging and dangerous pollutants such as pharmaceuticals and pathogens.

Preparation of Magnetic MIL-68(Ga) Metal-Organic Framework and Heavy Metal Ion Removal Application

A magnetic metal-organic framework nanocomposite (magnetic MIL-68(Ga)) was synthesized through a "one pot" reaction and used for heavy metal ion removal. The morphology and elemental properties of the nanocomposite were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR), X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), as well as zeta potential. Moreover, the factors affecting the adsorption capacity of the nanocomposite, including time, pH, metal ion type and concentration, were studied. It was found that the adsorption capacity of magnetic MIL-68(Ga) for Pb²⁺ and Cu²⁺ was 220 and 130 mg/g, respectively. Notably, the magnetic adsorbents could be separated easily using an external magnetic field, regenerated by ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid disodium salt (EDTA-Na₂) and reused three times, in favor of practical application. This study provides a reference for the rapid separation and purification of heavy metal ions from wastewater.

Natural Polymers and Their Nanocomposites Used for Environmental Applications

The aim of this review is to bring together the main natural polymer applications for environmental remediation, as a class of nexus materials with advanced properties that offer the opportunity of integration in single or simultaneous decontamination processes. By identifying the main natural polymers derived from agro-industrial sources or monomers converted by biotechnology into sustainable polymers, the paper offers the main performances identified in the literature for: (i) the treatment of water contaminated with heavy metals and emerging pollutants such as dyes and organics, (ii) the decontamination and remediation of soils, and (iii) the reduction in the number of suspended solids of a particulate matter (PM) type in the atmosphere. Because nanotechnology offers new horizons in materials science, nanocomposite tunable polymers are also studied and presented as promising materials in the context of developing sustainable and integrated products in society to ensure quality of life. As a class of future smart materials, the natural polymers and their nanocomposites are obtained from renewable resources, which are inexpensive materials with high surface area, porosity, and high adsorption properties due to their various functional groups. The information gathered in this review paper is based on the publications in the field from the last two decades. The future perspectives of these fascinating materials should take into account the scale-up, the toxicity of nanoparticles, and the competition with food production, as well as the environmental regulations.
