Abstract
INTRODUCTION This randomized clinical study compared the in vivo antibacterial efficacy of Reciproc Blue (RB), XP-endo Shaper (XP-S), and XP-endo Shaper associated with XP-endo Finisher (XP-F) systems in infected oval-shaped root canals with primary apical periodontitis. METHODS In this study, 28 human teeth with a single root and a single canal were randomly assigned to 2 groups according to the instrumentation technique: group 1, RB (n = 14) and group 2, XP-endo (XP-S and XP-F, n = 14). The single-rooted teeth were prepared by reciprocating and rotary nickel-titanium instruments with 5.25% sodium hypochlorite irrigation. Samples were collected from the canal at the baseline (S1), after chemomechanical preparation (S2), and after XP-F instrumentation (S3). The DNA extracts were subjected to quantitative analysis for total bacterial counts by quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction. The data were analyzed using the analysis of variance test, and the level of significance was set at 5%. RESULTS All samples tested positive for the presence of bacteria at baseline, and the bacterial counts substantially reduced after treatment procedures (P < .01). The results showed no statistical difference between RB and XP-S instrumentation with respect to the bacterial reduction (P > .05). A marked bacterial reduction was observed after the use of the XP-F instrument (P < .01). CONCLUSIONS The XP-S and RB systems sharply reduced the bacterial load in oval-shaped root canals with primary apical periodontitis. XP-F used as a supplementary instrument to chemomechanical preparation promoted a significantly higher bacterial reduction.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To evaluate the effect of NaOCl irrigant activation using passive ultrasonic activation, F-files, XP-endo Finisher files and or needle irrigation alone on the reduction of intracanal bacteria from root canals in teeth undergoing root canal treatment. METHODS Eighty patients with asymptomatic apical periodontitis were randomly divided into four groups. Access cavities were prepared and pre-treatment samples were taken (S1). Canals were then prepared and post-instrumentation samples (S2) taken. NaOCl was then activated with the various irrigant activation systems and post-irrigation samples (S3) taken. The samples were processed and colony forming units (CFUs) of bacteria were determined. The reduction in CFUs among the experimental groups were analysed using the Kruskal Wallis test and pairwise comparisons with the Mann-Whitney test. The Friedman test was used to compare the differences in the reduction of CFUs within the groups. RESULTS Overall, for all groups there was a significant reduction in the CFUs from S1 to S2 (P < 0.05) and from S2 to S3 (P < 0.05). Both XP-endo Finisher and passive ultrasonic activation techniques were associated with the greatest reduction in CFUs with no significant difference between them (P = 0.24). However, both were associated with significantly lower CFUs when compared to F-file activation and needle irrigation (P < 0.05). F-file activation reduced the CFUs significantly more compared to needle irrigation (P = 0.04). CONCLUSIONS XP-endo Finisher file activation and passive ultrasonic activation were equivalent in terms of reduction in CFUs. F-file activation did not reduce the CFUs to the same extent as the XP-endo Finisher file and ultrasonic activation but reduced the CFUs more than needle irrigation. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE The present study highlights the effect of new XP-endo Finisher file and passive ultrasonic activation in reducing the bacterial load from the root canal system which is important for the success of root canal treatment.

Abstract
New tools for activating endodontic irrigants have evolved, yet their impact on root canal disinfection, in comparison to the passive placing of an inter-visit medication, have not yet been fully elucidated. The use of DNA- and rRNA-based methods may cast some new light on this issue, as they allow a comparison to be made between microbial presence and activity. Therefore, the aim of this single-arm intervention trial is to evaluate the antibacterial effect of endodontic procedures using both molecular methods. Root canal samples were obtained from 20 patients with asymptomatic apical periodontitis after each treatment step: access cavity, chemo-mechanical preparation, adjunctive procedures (XP-endo Finisher file and passive ultrasonic irrigation), calcium hydroxide medication, and 2nd-visit root canal preparation. DNA and cDNA from the samples were subjected to quantitative polymerase chain reaction with universal primers for the bacterial 16S rRNA gene. Chemo-mechanical preparation promoted a drastic reduction in bacterial levels and activity, whereas the adjunctive procedures did not make a significant contribution to further disinfection. At the 2nd visit, bacteria were active after the use of calcium hydroxide medication; however, they were significantly reduced after a 2nd-visit preparation. Consequently, the lowest bacterial levels were found at the end of the treatment. This clinical trial, which used an rRNA and rDNA combined approach, confirmed previous studies showing that root canal preparation represents the main strategy for root canal disinfection.

Abstract
Background. One of the most important aims of an endodontic treatment is to obtain the complete removal or reduction of root canal remaining filling material: Smear layer, bacteria, intra-canal medicaments. To meet this requirement, several irrigation activation techniques have been proposed. Our systematic review examined studies which analyzed the XP-endo Finisher (XPF) instrument efficacy in removing root canal debris during initial endodontic treatment or retreatment, comparing it with the efficacy of other irrigation activation protocols, such as passive ultrasonic irrigation (PUI), laser activation procedure (Er:YAG), and Self-Adjusting File system (SAF). Methods. A systematic review was conducted using PubMed, Chocrane Library, and Scopus databases, identifying 51 items. Thirty-four articles were excluded based on title, abstract, full text, and language. Seventeen randomized controlled trials were selected and consequently submitted to quality assessment and data collection. Results. Conventional needle irrigation (CNI) is the less effective irrigation technique, but it is still unclear whether XPF is able to guarantee greater debris removal than the PUI technique. Er:YAG laser has been proven to be more effective in apical third than XPF instrument. Conclusions. Further investigations are needed in order to establish which final irrigation activation procedure could reach the maximum root canal debris reduction.

Abstract
Background The purpose of the study was to evaluate the effectiveness of different root canal disinfection techniques in the elimination of a multi-species biofilm from inside the root canal. Material and Methods Fifty mandibular first premolars were used in the present study, standardized to 11mm of root length, and instrumented with a reciprocation system Reciproc, (VDW GmbH, Munich, Germany) to a #50. Longitudinally sectioned halves of the roots were obtained and washed with NaOCl 4%, EDTA 17% and 5% sodium thiosulfate, and sterilized by autoclaving for 15 minutes at 121°C. A multi-species biofilm broth was developed with three strains of bacteria under laboratory conditions: Enterococcus faecalis ATTC 29212, Eikenella corrodens ATTC 23834, Streptococcus anginosus ATTC 33397. Roots were autoclaved and transferred to the broth for 4 days and then were subjected to either disinfection with sodium hypochlorite 4% and XP-endo Finisher (FKG Dentaire, La Chaux-de-Fonds, Switzerland) or chlorhexidine 2% with and without activation with XP-endo Finisher (FKG Dentaire, La Chaux-de-Fonds, Switzerland). Results The evaluations of the biofilm elimination showed results that indicate that the 4% sodium hypochlorite group with positive pressure irrigation presented significant differences with the group that had irrigation with sodium hypochlorite activated with XP-endo Finisher and the chlorhexidine groups to 2% (P<0.05). Conclusions Chlorhexidine 2% activated with the XP-endo Finisher does not exert elimination or improved cleaning effect on the multi-species biofilm. Activation of sodium hypochlorite 4% improved the elimination of the multi-species biofilm. Key words:Biofilm, multispecies, chlorhexidine, sodium hypochlorite.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The deleterious caustic effects of sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl) as a root canal irrigant makes it imperative that alternative methods are developed for root canal disinfection. The purpose of this study was to examine the antimicrobial efficacy of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) synthesized on an aqueous graphene oxide (GO) matrix (Ag-GO), with different irrigant delivery methods to enhance the disinfection regimen, using a novel ex vivo infected tooth model. METHODS AgNPs were prepared by reducing AgNO3 with 0.01M NaBH4 in presence of GO. Elemental analysis was performed with scanning electron microscopy/energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (SEM/EDS) and scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM) was used for size and morphology analysis of GO and Ag-GO. Nutrient stressed, multi-species biofilms were grown in prepared root canals of single-rooted teeth. The irrigants used were sterile saline, 1% and 2.5% NaOCl, 2% chlorhexidine gluconate (CHX), 17% EDTA and an aqueous suspension of 0.25% Ag-GO. The antimicrobial efficacy of the irrigants were performed with paper point sampling and measurement of microbial counts. The biofilm disruption in dentine tubule surfaces was analysed with confocal laser scanning microscopy (CLSM). The acquisition of total biovolume (μm3/μm2) and biofilm viability was performed using software BioImage_L. Two-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) with post hoc Tukey tests was used for data analysis with level of statistical significance set at P<0.05. RESULTS SEM/EDS analysis confirmed impregnation of Ag within the GO matrix. TEM images showed polygonal GO sheets and spherical AgNPs of diameter 20-50nm, forming a network on the surface of GO sheets. The use of ultrasonic activation enhanced the efficacy of Ag-GO compared to 1% NaOCl, 2% CHX, 17% EDTA and sterile saline (P<0.05). The microbial killing efficacy of 2.5% NaOCl was superior compared to the experimental groups. The maximum biofilm disruption, in dentine tubule surfaces, was achieved by 2.5% NaOCl, however Ag-GO caused a significant reduction of total biovolumes compared to the rest of the experimental groups (P<0.05%). SIGNIFICANCE The successful documentation of the microbial killing and biofilm disruption capacity of Ag-GO is a promising step forward to explore its unique properties in clinical applications and biomaterials in dentistry.

Distribution of sodium hypochlorite throughout the mesial root canal system of mandibular molars after adjunctive irrigant activation procedures: a micro-computed tomographic study. Abstract
OBJECTIVES To evaluate and compare irrigant distribution throughout the root canal system of mesial roots of mandibular molars after application of distinct adjunctive irrigant activation procedures. MATERIALS AND METHODS Fifteen extracted mandibular molars presenting Fan's type II, III, or IV isthmus configurations were selected. The canals were initially enlarged and cleaned. The same specimens were subjected to conventional positive pressure irrigation (PPI) followed by adjunctive irrigation approaches: passive ultrasonic irrigation (PUI), mechanical activation with the XP-endo Finisher instrument, and a control group in which the irrigant remained in the canal with no activation. Retention time for the irrigant was the same for all groups. Sodium hypochlorite mixed with a contrast medium (Omnipaque 300) was used as the irrigant. Before and immediately after the adjunctive irrigation, micro-computed tomographic (micro-CT) scans were taken to evaluate the volume of the entire root canal system that was filled by the irrigant. An exclusive analysis was also done for the isthmus area. RESULTS Analysis of the entire root canal system showed that the XP-endo Finisher instrument promoted better distribution of the irrigant than PUI and the control group (p < 0.01). PUI was not significantly different from the control group (p > 0.05). A separate analysis of the isthmus area showed no significant difference between the adjunctive irrigation methods and the control (p > 0.05). CONCLUSIONS The XP-endo Finisher instrument promoted better distribution of irrigant throughout the root canal system, especially in the apical canal segment, when compared to PUI. However, the tested approaches did not differ as to the ability to drive irrigants into the isthmus area. CLINICAL RELEVANCE This study highlighted that the XP-endo Finisher instrument presented a better performance to distribute irrigant throughout the root canal system, especially in the apical canal segment compared to positive pressure irrigation and PUI.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION The aims of this study were to evaluate the effectiveness of disinfection methods and determine the most promising irrigation protocol for regenerative endodontics in teeth with large root canals. METHODS Sterilized root samples with 0.8-mm wide apical foramen (n = 94) were prepared from human mandibular premolars. Ninety-two samples were infected with Enterococcus faecalis for 21 days and biofilm formation was verified using scanning electron microscopy (n = 2). The 90 infected samples were randomly assigned into 9 groups: no intervention (initial), 1.5% NaOCl irrigation (1.5 N), 2.5% NaOCl irrigation (2.5 N), 1.5 N + intermittent passive ultrasonic irrigation (PUI), 1.5 N + intermittent canal brushing with Navitip FX (NFX), 1.5 N + intermittent XP-endo Finisher (XPF), 1.5 N + circumferential filing (CF), 1.5 N + 1-min Self-adjusting File (SAF), and 1.5 N + mechanical instrumentation using #90‒110 files (MI). Subsequently, the root canal walls were shaved for microbial analysis. The mean colony-forming units (CFUs) were determined and analyzed using 1-way analysis of variance. RESULTS The mean CFU count was lowest in the MI group (63.5 CFU/mL), followed by the NFX, XPF, SAF, 2.5 N, CF, PUI, 1.5 N, and initial groups. The remaining bacteria in the 1.5 N group was 3.6-fold higher than that of the PUI group; 4- to 5-fold higher than that of the 2.5 N, CF, and SAF groups; and 22-fold and 36-fold higher than that of the XPF and NFX groups, respectively. The 2.5 N and 1.5 N groups with adjunctive treatments, excluding the PUI group, had significantly fewer remaining bacteria compared with the 1.5 N group (P < .05). CONCLUSIONS Performing various procedures supplemental to 1.5 N improved large root canal disinfection. Adjunctive NFX most effectively reduced the number of bacteria without dentin removal.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of XP-endo Finisher (XPF) file and passive ultrasonic irrigation (PUI) in the smear layer removal of the root canal. METHODS A total of 60 human single-rooted premolars were selected and decoronated to standardize their canal length to 16 mm. Tooth samples were prepared using a S3 rotary system to prepare root canal with the file size of 3S and then randomly divided into 6 groups according to the final irrigation protocol, as follows: XPF 3 mL of 3% NaOCl for 1 min (group A); XPF 3 mL of 3% NaOCl for 1 min, followed by 4 mL of 17% ethylene diamine tetraacetic acid (EDTA) for 1 min (group B); PUI of 3 mL of 3% NaOCl for 1 min (group C); PUI of 3 mL of 3% NaOCl for 1 min, followed by 4 mL of 17% EDTA for 1 min (group D); 3 mL of 3% NaOCl for 1 min by using a syringe and a 30 G side-vented needle (group E); and 3 mL of 3% NaOCl for 1 min by using a syringe and a 30 G side-vented needle, followed by 4 mL of 17% EDTA for 1 min (group F). After the completion of the root canal preparation, the teeth were split into two longitudinally. The mean numbers of the visible open dentinal tubules in the apical and middle thirds of the root canals were evaluated via scanning electron microscope. RESULTS The whole surfaces of the root canals in groups A, C, and E were covered by a smear layer. Groups A and C possessed significantly higher number of visible open dentinal tubules than in group E (P<0.05), with statistically insignificant difference between groups A and C (P>0.05). The apical third of the samples in groups B and D and in the middle thirds of canals in group F exhibited a small amount of smear layer, and the dentinal tubules were open or semi-open. The root canal surfaces in the apical third of the samples in group F were covered by a smear layer, and the dentinal tubules were sealed or semisealed. The smear layers in the middle third of the samples in groups B and D were removed, and the dentinal tubules were more visibly open than those of the four other groups (P<0.05). The difference between groups B and D were statistically insignificant (P>0.05). CONCLUSIONS The difference between XPF and PUI in terms of the smear layer removal of the root canals was insignificant. Hence, XPF, as a new irrigation agitation technique, can aid in improving smear layer removal.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of instrumentation and irrigation on the initial adherence of Enterococcus faecalis to root canal dentin and to explore initial microbial adhesion to root filling materials. METHODS The following specimens were prepared: instrumented and uninstrumented dentin, dentin treated with different irrigation protocols, and root filling materials. The number of E. faecalis cells adhered on dentin was measured. The adhesion force of E. faecalis cells on different materials and the roughness of different surfaces were measured. The contact angle of the surfaces was recorded. The results were analyzed using the t test. RESULTS Instrumented dentin specimens had a significantly higher amount of E. faecalis adherence than uninstrumented dentin. There were higher numbers of adhering bacteria on the dentin when EDTA was used alone (P < .05) compared with other irrigants alone. The use of chlorhexidine (CHX) as the last irrigant for a certain time resulted in a reduced number of adhering bacteria when the specimens were first exposed to sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl) followed by EDTA. EDTA used alone had the highest adhesion force followed by NaOCl alone and CHX alone (P < .05). Dentin treated with EDTA alone had the highest roughness and contact angle followed by NaOCl alone and CHX alone (P < .05). CHX added as the final irrigant after NaOCl with EDTA irrigation reduced the contact angle (P < .05). Larger amounts of adhering bacteria and higher adhesion force were detected on the surface of gutta-percha and sealer than on the dentin surface (P < .05). CONCLUSIONS Instrumentation and irrigation alter the initial adherence of E. faecalis to root canal dentin and the surface properties of the dentin as well.

Abstract
The essence of pulp and periapical disease is bacterial infection. Thus, satisfactory infection control is the premise and foundation of healing, in which root canal preparation is a critical procedure. Root canal system anatomy, infection degree, physical cutting during root canal preparation, and certain cleaning measures affect the quality of infection control. Appropriate evaluation of the grades of infected root canals before treatment is necessary because different grades of root canal infection demand various disinfection schedules to facilitate tissue healing and guarantee the long-term success rate of endodontic treatment.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION The aim of this study was to systematically review the evidence on the cleaning and disinfection of root canals and the healing of apical periodontitis when ultrasonic irrigant activation is applied during primary root canal treatment of mature permanent teeth compared with syringe irrigation. METHODS An electronic search was conducted of the Cochrane Library, Embase, LILACS, PubMed, SciELO, and Scopus databases using both free-text key words and controlled vocabulary. Additional studies were sought through hand searching of endodontic journals and textbooks. The retrieved studies were screened by 2 reviewers according to predefined criteria. The included studies were critically appraised, and the extracted data were arranged in tables. RESULTS The electronic and hand search retrieved 1966 titles. Three clinical studies and 45 in vitro studies were included in this review. Ultrasonic activation did not improve the healing rate of apical periodontitis compared with syringe irrigation after primary root canal treatment of teeth with a single root canal. Conflicting results were reported by the in vitro microbiological studies. Ultrasonic activation was more effective than syringe irrigation in the removal of pulp tissue remnants and hard tissue debris based on both clinical and in vitro studies. Ultrasonic activation groups were possibly favored in 13 studies, whereas syringe irrigation groups may have been favored in 3 studies. CONCLUSIONS The level of the available evidence was low, so no strong clinical recommendations could be formulated. Future studies should focus on the antimicrobial effect and healing of apical periodontitis in teeth with multiple root canals.

Abstract
In endodontic treatment, regardless of the instrumentation technique, the presence of a smear layer covering contaminated dentin walls is always a concern. Thus, irrigation plays an essential role in reducing bacterial load. To enhance irrigation effectiveness, different ultrasonic activation methods and the use of different tips have been studied. This study assessed the cleaning capacity of the novel NiTi ultrasonic tip for smear layer removal using ultrasonically activated irrigation (UAI) with passive or continuous ultrasonic irrigation (PUI or CUI, respectively), compared with conventional irrigation. Forty-five single-rooted human mandibular premolars were decoronated to a standardized length of 16 mm. Instrumentation was performed using the Genius system up to size 50.04 and irrigated with 3% NaOCl. The specimens were divided into three groups (n = 15) according to the final irrigation activation technique: conventional irrigation (CI), as control group; PUI; and CUI, following the manufacturer's protocol. The samples were longitudinally cleaved and analyzed under a scanning electron microscope for smear layer removal according to a cleanliness score for the cervical, middle, and apical thirds. Data were evaluated by means of the Kruskal-Wallis and Tukey's tests, with a 5% level of significance. UAI enhanced cleaning compared to conventional irrigation, mainly at the apical third. CUI showed the best results, with statistically significant lower scores than PUI and CI (p < 0.05). Final irrigant activation with the NiTi tip showed better cleaning capacity than conventional irrigation. In addition, CUI resulted in better smear layer removal than PUI.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To compare the effectiveness of the XP-endo Finisher instrument and passive ultrasonic irrigation (PUI) as final irrigation protocols on the removal of accumulated hard-tissue debris (AHTD) from oval-shaped canals using micro-computed tomographic (micro-CT) analysis. METHODS Twenty mandibular incisors were anatomically pair-matched based on similar morphological dimensions (length, volume, aspect ratio, and configuration) through micro-CT analysis, prepared with Reciproc R25 instrument, scanned again, and assigned to one of the two experimental groups (n = 10), according to the final irrigation protocol: XP-endo Finisher and PUI. After the final irrigation protocols, the specimens were rescanned and the registered datasets were examined to quantify the amount of AHTD. Data were statistically analyzed using Student's t test with a significance level of 5%. RESULTS The final irrigation protocols were highly similar in terms of volumetric percentage reduction of AHTD (P = 1.000). CONCLUSIONS XP-endo Finisher and PUI showed the same effectiveness on the removal of AHTD. None of the tested final irrigation protocols completely removed the AHTD from oval-shaped root canals. CLINICAL RELEVANCE AHTD may be considered clinically relevant because it could harbor bacterial contents away from the disinfection procedures. Both final irrigation protocols were effective on the removal of AHTD.

Abstract
Objectives This study was to evaluate the antibacterial effect of different instrumentation and irrigation techniques using confocal laser scanning microscopy (CLSM) after root canal inoculation with Enterococcus faecalis (E. faecalis). Materials and Methods Mesiobuccal and mesiolingual canals of extracted mandibular molars were apically enlarged up to a size 25 hand K-file, then autoclaved and inoculated with E. faecalis. The samples were randomly divided into 4 main groups according to the system of instrumentation and irrigation: an XP-endo Shaper (XPS) combined with conventional irrigation (XPS/C) or an XP-endo Finisher (XPF) (XPS/XPF), and iRaCe combined with conventional irrigation (iRaCe/C) or combined with an XPF (iRaCe/XPF). A middle-third sample was taken from each group, and then the bacterial reduction was evaluated using CLSM at a depth of 50 µm inside the dentinal tubules. The ratio of red fluorescence (dead cells) to green-and-red fluorescence (live and dead cells) represented the percentage of bacterial reduction. The data were then statistically analyzed using the Kruskal-Wallis test for comparisons across the groups and the Dunn test was used for pairwise comparisons. Results The instrumentation and irrigation techniques had a significant effect on bacterial reduction (p < 0.05). The iRaCe/XPF group showed the strongest effect, followed by the XPS/XPF and XPS/C group, while the iRaCe/C group had the weakest effect. Conclusions Combining iRaCe with XPF improved its bacterial reduction effect, while combining XPS with XPF did not yield a significant improvement in its ability to reduce bacteria at a depth of 50 µm in the dentinal tubules.

Abstract
The introduction of automated instrumentation in endodontics represented a major advance in progress for this specialty, with improvements in the quality and predictability of root canal preparation and a significant reduction in procedural errors. In recent years, endodontic instruments have undergone a series of changes brought about by modifications in design, surface treatments, and thermal treatments. In addition, new movements have also been incorporated to offer greater safety and efficiency, optimizing the properties of the NiTi alloy, especially through eccentric rotary motion. An understanding of the mechanical properties of these new NiTi instruments and their effect on the clinical performance of root canal preparation is essential if dental practitioners are to select the instruments that provide optimal clinical outcomes, especially in curved or flattened canals. The objective of this literature review is to present and discuss the characteristics of the NiTi alloys used in the major instrumentation systems available in the market, as well as the influence of the metallurgical and mechanical properties of NiTi instruments and the movements that drive them, to enable more accurate and predictable planning of root canal preparation.

Abstract
Dens invaginatus (DI) represents an endodontic challenge because of its complex root canal morphology. This case report presents the clinical management of a 22-year-old woman with type II DI in right maxillary lateral incisor with a painful swelling. Pulp testing revealed no response with the tooth. Type II DI with open apex and large periradicular lesion was seen on radiograph. The treatment was planned by using cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) imaging. Canal treatment was completed in two appointments with the aid of a dental operating microscope. In the first appointment, the internal anatomy was modified using an ultrasonic tip, and chemo-mechanical preparation was performed using the XP-endo Finisher instrument and NaOCl; calcium hydroxide intracanal dressing was used for one month. In the second appointment, an apical plug of mineral trioxide aggregate (MTA) Repair HP was performed and the remaining pulp space was then filled with gutta-percha and AH Plus sealer using the continuous wave of condensation technique. At the fourteen-month reevaluation, the patient was asymptomatic, the tooth had remained functional, and radiographic and CBCT assessment showed significant osseous healing of the lesion. Successful non-surgical management of the present type II DI was achieved in the present case. The association of CBCT, dental operating microscope, XP-endo Finisher, NaOCl and MTA Repair HP were important for ensuring a predictable outcome.

Abstract
AIM To evaluate the effectiveness of NaOCl, NaOCl-EDTA and NaOCl + HEBP activated by ultrasonics and XP-endo Finisher on organic tissue removal from simulated internal root resorption cavities. METHODOLOGY The root canals of 144 single-rooted teeth were instrumented. The teeth were split longitudinally, and semicircular cavities were prepared in the canal walls on each half of the roots. Samples obtained from ground bovine muscle tissue were weighed and adapted into the semicircular cavities. The root fragments were reassembled and cemented to create a circular simulated resorption cavity within the canal. Teeth were divided into twelve groups (n = 12) according to the irrigation protocols: group 1: NaOCl, no activation; group 2: NaOCl, passive ultrasonic irrigation (PUI); group 3: NaOCl, XP-endo Finisher; group 4: NaOCl-EDTA, no activation; group 5: NaOCl-EDTA, PUI; group 6: NaOCl-EDTA, XP-endo Finisher; group 7: NaOCl + HEBP, no activation; group 8: NaOCl + HEBP, PUI; group 9: NaOCl + HEBP, XP-endo Finisher; group 10: distilled water, no activation; group 11: distilled water, PUI; and group 12: distilled water, XP-endo Finisher. The teeth were disassembled, and the tissue remaining inside the resorption cavities were weighed. The data were analysed statistically using two-way anova and Fisher's LSD tests with a significance level of 0.05. RESULTS The use of XP-endo Finisher with the experimental solutions resulted in the greatest tissue weight loss compared to the other activation protocols (P < 0.001). There was no significant difference between NaOCl and NaOCl + HEBP in terms of tissue removal. CONCLUSION The use of a NaOCl + HEBP mixture activated with XP-endo Finisher was an effective irrigation regimen for removing simulated organic tissues from artificial internal root resorption cavities in the straight root canals of single-rooted teeth.
