Qualitative and quantitative analysis of chlorpyrifos residues in tea by surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) combined with chemometric models

Evaluation of matcha tea quality index using portable NIR spectroscopy coupled with chemometric algorithms

BACKGROUND

The study reports a portable near infrared (NIR) spectroscopy system coupled with chemometric algorithms for prediction of tea polyphenols and amino acids in order to index matcha tea quality.

RESULTS

Spectral data were preprocessed by standard normal variate (SNV), mean center (MC) and first-order derivative (1^st D) tests. The data were then subjected to full spectral partial least squares (PLS) and four variable selection algorithms, such as random frog partial least square (RF-PLS), synergy interval partial least square (Si-PLS), genetic algorithm-partial least square (GA-PLS) and competitive adaptive reweighted sampling partial least square (CARS-PLS). RF-PLS was established and identified as the optimum model based on the values of the correlation coefficients of prediction (R_P ), root mean square error of prediction (RMSEP) and residual predictive deviation (RPD), which were 0.8625, 0.82% and 2.13, and 0.9662, 0.14% and 3.83, respectively, for tea polyphenols and amino acids. The content range of tea polyphenols and amino acids in matcha tea samples was 8.51-14.58% and 2.10-3.75%, respectively. The quality of matcha tea was successfully classified with an accuracy rate of 83.33% as qualified, unqualified and excellent grade.

CONCLUSION

The proposed method can be used as a rapid, accurate and non-destructive platform to classify various matcha tea samples based on the ratio of tea polyphenols to amino acids. © 2019 Society of Chemical Industry.

Determination of Adulteration Content in Extra Virgin Olive Oil Using FT-NIR Spectroscopy Combined with the BOSS-PLS Algorithm

This work applied the FT-NIR spectroscopy technique with the aid of chemometrics algorithms to determine the adulteration content of extra virgin olive oil (EVOO). Informative spectral wavenumbers were obtained by the use of a novel variable selection algorithm of bootstrapping soft shrinkage (BOSS) during partial least-squares (PLS) modeling. Then, a PLS model was finally constructed using the best variable subset obtained by the BOSS algorithm to quantitative determine doping concentrations in EVOO. The results showed that the optimal variable subset including 15 wavenumbers was selected by the BOSS algorithm in the full-spectrum region according to the first local lowest value of the root-mean-square error of cross validation (RMSECV), which was 1.4487 % v/v. Compared with the optimal models of full-spectrum PLS, competitive adaptive reweighted sampling PLS (CARS–PLS), Monte Carlo uninformative variable elimination PLS (MCUVE–PLS), and iteratively retaining informative variables PLS (IRIV–PLS), the BOSS–PLS model achieved better results, with the coefficient of determination (R²) of prediction being 0.9922, and the root-mean-square error of prediction (RMSEP) being 1.4889 % v/v in the prediction process. The results obtained indicated that the FT-NIR spectroscopy technique has the potential to perform a rapid quantitative analysis of the adulteration content of EVOO, and the BOSS algorithm showed its superiority in informative wavenumbers selection.

Rapid Detection of Pesticide Residues in Paddy Water Using Surface-Enhanced Raman Spectroscopy

Pesticide residue in paddy water is one of the main factors affecting the quality and safety of rice, however, the negative effect of this residue can be effectively prevented and reduced through early detection. This study developed a rapid detection method for fonofos, phosmet, and sulfoxaflor in paddy water through chemometric methods and surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS). Residue from paddy water samples was directly used for SERS measurement. The obtained spectra from the SERS can detect 0.5 mg/L fonofos, 0.25 mg/L phosmet, and 1 mg/L sulfoxaflor through the appearance of major characteristic peaks. Then, we used chemometric methods to develop models for the intelligent analysis of pesticides, alongside the SERS spectra. The classification models developed by K-nearest neighbor identified all of the samples, with an accuracy of 100%. For the quantitative analysis, the partial least squares regression models obtained the best predicted performance for fonofos and sulfoxaflor, and the support vector machine model provided optimal results, with a root-mean-square error of validation of 0.207 and a coefficient of determination of validation of 0.99952, for phosmet. Experiments for actual contaminated samples also showed that the above models predicted the pesticide residue values with high accuracy. Overall, using SERS with chemometric methods provided a simple and convenient approach for the detection of pesticide residues in paddy water.
