Novel micro-structured carbon-based adsorbents for notorious arsenic removal from wastewater

The contamination of groundwater by arsenic (As) in Bangladesh is the biggest impairing of a population, with a large number of peoples affected. Specifically, groundwater of Gangetic Delta is alarmingly contaminated with arsenic. Similar, perilous circumstances exist in many other countries and consequently, there is a dire need to develop cost-effective decentralized filtration unit utilizing low-cost adsorbents for eliminating arsenic from water. Morphological synthesis of carbon with unique spherical, nanorod, and massive nanostructures were achieved by solvothermal method. Owing to their intrinsic adsorption properties and different nanostructures, these nanostructures were employed as adsorption of arsenic in aqueous solution, with the purpose to better understanding the morphological effect in adsorption. It clearly demonstrated that carbon with nanorods morphology exhibited an excellent adsorption activity of arsenite (about 82%) at pH 3, remarkably superior to the two with solid sphere and massive microstructures, because of its larger specific surface area, enhanced acid strength and improved adsorption capacity. Furthermore, we discovered that iron hydroxide radicals and energy-induced contact point formation in nanorods are the responsible for the high adsorption of As in aqueous solution. Thus, our work provides insides into the microstructure-dependent capability of different carbon for As adsorption applications.

Assessing of cesium removal from wastewater using functionalized wood cellulosic adsorbent

Sustainable materials are urgently desired for treatment of radioactive cesium (Cs) contaminated water to safe-guard the public health. Apart from the synthetic ligand-based materials, the Mangrove charcoal modified adsorbent was fabricated for assessing of Cs removal from waste sample. The raw charcoal was oxidized using nitrification approach and diverse oxygen containing carboxyl, carbonyl and hydroxyl functional groups were introduced. After modification, the adsorbent characteristics were drastically changed as compared to the charcoal during the measurement of FTIR, N₂ adsorption-desorption isotherms and SEM micrographs. The data clarified that charcoal modified adsorbent was exhibited high Cs transport through the inner surface of the adsorbent based on bonding ability. The adsorbent was shown comparatively slow kinetics to Cs ion; however, the adsorption capacity was high as 133.54 mg/g, which was higher than the crown ether based conjugate materials. The adsorption data were followed to the Langmuir adsorption isotherms and the monolayer coverage was possible due to the data presentation. The presence of high amount of Na and K were slightly interfered to the Cs adsorption by the charcoal modified adsorbent, however; the Na and K concentration was 350-600 folds higher than the Cs concentration. Then the proposed adsorbent was selective to Cs for the potential real radioactive Cs contaminated water. The volume reduction was established rather than desorption and reuses advantages. More than 99% volume reduction was measured by burning of Cs adsorbed adsorbent at 500 °C for ensuring the safe storage and disposal of used adsorbent. Therefore, the charcoal modified adsorbent may open the new door to treat the Cs containing wastewater.

Release and Recharge of Fluoride Ions from Acrylic Resin Modified with Bioactive Glass

Background: Oral hygiene is essential for maintaining residual dentition of partial denture wearers. The dental material should positively affect the oral environment. Fluoride-releasing dental materials help to inhibit microbial colonization and formation of plaque as well as to initiate the remineralization process in the early cavity area. Aim: To evaluate fluoride ion release and recharge capacity, sorption, and solubility of polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) dental resin modified with bioactive glass addition. Materials and methods: Two bioactive glass materials (5 wt% Kavitan, 10 wt% Kavitan, and 10 wt% Fritex) and pure 10 wt% NaF were added to dental acrylic resin. After polymerization of the modified resins, the release levels of fluoride anions were measured based on color complex formation by using a spectrophotometer after 7, 14, 28, and 35 days of storage in distilled water at 37 °C. Subsequently, specimens were brushed with a fluoride-containing tooth paste on each side for 30 s, and the fluoride recharge and release potential was investigated after 1, 7, and 14 days. Sorption and solubility after 7 days of storage in distilled water was also investigated. Results: The acrylic resins with addition of 10% bioactive glass materials released fluoride ions for over 4 weeks (from 0.14 to 2.27 µg/cm²). The amount of fluoride ions released from the PMMA resin with addition of 10 wt% Fritex glass was higher than that from the resin with addition of 10 wt% Kavitan. The acrylic resin containing 10 wt% NaF released a high amount of ions over a period of 1 week (1.58 µg/cm²), but the amount of released ions decreased rapidly after 14 days of storage. For specimens containing 5 wt% Kavitan glass, the ion-releasing capacity also lasted only for 14 days. Fluoride ion rechargeable properties were observed for the PMMA resin modified with addition of 10 wt% Fritex glass. The ion release levels after recharge ranged from 0.32 to 0.48 µg/cm². Sorption values ranged from 10.23 μm/mm³ for unmodified PMMA resin to 12.11 μm/mm³ for specimens modified with 10 wt% Kavitan glass. No significant differences were found regarding solubility levels after 7 days. Conclusions: The addition of 10 wt% Fritex and 10 wt% Kavitan bioactive glass materials to heat-cured acrylic resin may improve its material properties, with bioactive fluoride ion release ability lasting for over 4 weeks. The resin modified with 10 wt% Fritex glass could absorb fluoride ions from the toothpaste solution and then effectively release them. Addition of fluoride releasing fillers have a small effect on sorption and solubility increase of the modified PMMA resin. Clinical significance: The addition of bioactive glass may be promising in the development of the novel bioactive heat-cured denture base resin.

Ultrasound-assisted cleaning chloride from wastewater using Friedel's salt precipitation

The chloride salt derived from the rare earth smelting wastewater was effectively dislodged using Friedel's salt precipitation assisted with ultrasonic enhancement. Various single factors such as the reagent ratio, temperatures, reaction time and agitation speed were determined and investigated systematically. Results showed that the optimal single-stage removal efficiency were 88.22% and 80.89% with and without ultrasonic strengthen, respectively. The particle size distribution, morphology and elemental analysis of the precipitation were carried out by TEM, SEM, EDS and XRD analysis. These results revealed that the effect of ultrasonic has been given prominence to the removal efficiency of chloride salt. It is attributed to the cavitation and mechanical disturbance effect of ultrasound. In order to further decline the chloride, a two-stage de-chlorination carried out, the result indicated that the concentration of chloride was 120 mg/L and 430 mg/L with and without ultrasonic strengthening afterwards two-stage de-chlorination, respectively. The chloride concentration can fully meet the effluent concentration requirement under the effect of ultrasonic enhancement.

Efficient cesium encapsulation from contaminated water by cellulosic biomass based activated wood charcoal

In this study, cost-effective cellulosic biomass based activated wood charcoal was developed from Japanese Sugi tree (Cryptomeria japonica) by concentrated nitric acid modification for adsorption of Cs from contaminated water. The physicochemical properties of specimens were investigated using N₂ adsorption-desorption isotherms (BET method), FESEM, FTIR, and XPS spectra analysis. The experimental results revealed that the surface area of the raw wood charcoal was significantly decreased after boiling nitric acid modification. However, several oxygen-containing acidic function groups (-COOH, -CO) were introduced on the surface. The adsorption study confirmed that the equilibrium contact time was 1 h, the optimum adsorption pH was neutral to alkaline and the suitable adsorbent dose was 1:100 (solid: liquid). The maximum Cs was removed when the concentration of Na and K were lower (5.0 mM) with Cs in solution. The Cs adsorption processes well approved by the Langmuir isotherm and pseudo-second-order kinetic models and the maximum adsorption capacity was 35.46 mgg^-1. The Cs adsorption mechanism was clearly described and it was assumed that the adsorption was strongly followed by chemisorptions mechanism based on the adsorbent surface properties, kinetic model and Langmuir isotherm model. Most importantly, about 98% of volume reduction was obtained by burning (500 °C) the Cs adsorbed charcoal, which ensured safe storage and disposal of radioactive waste. Therefore, this study can offer a guideline to produce a functional adsorbent for effective Cs removal and safe radioactive waste disposal.

Electro-Oxidation of Humic Acids Using Platinum Electrodes: An Experimental Approach and Kinetic Modelling

Humic acids (HA) are a potential hazard to aquatic ecosystems and human health. Because biological treatment of contaminated water does not satisfactorily remove these pollutants, novel approaches are under evaluation. This work explores electrochemical oxidation of HA in aqueous solution in a lab-scale apparatus using platinum-coated titanium electrodes. We evaluated the effects of HA concentration, current density, chloride concentration and ionic strength on the rate of HA oxidation. The initial reaction rate method was used for determining the rate law of HA degradation. The results showed that the reaction rate was first-order relative to HA concentration, chloride concentration and current density. An appreciable effect of ionic strength was also observed, most likely due to the polyanionic character of HA. We propose a kinetic model that satisfactorily fits the experimental data.

Adsorption of Remazol Brilliant Violet-5R Textile Dye from Aqueous Solutions by Using Eggshell Waste Biosorbent

Based on the well-known excellent adsorbent ability of chicken eggshells, the adsorptive capacity and mechanism of Remazol Brilliant Violet-5R (RBV-5R) dye by eggshell was investigated. Exploiting the high surface-area-to-volume ratio and porous structure of this natural adsorbent, the developed procedure showed to be useful for the efficient adsorption of RBV-5R dye from contaminated water. The protocol was thoroughly optimized by investigating the effect of the dye concentration, biomass-contaminated water ratio, particle size of the adsorbent, pH and temperature, as they are key factors in the efficiency of the dye removal process. The eggshell material was characterized by different types of microscopy techniques (stereo, polarization, SEM) as well as elemental analysis (element distribution mapping, EDX), Raman spectroscopy and BET-surface density measurements. EDX, FTIR and Raman spectroscopy proved the presence of the adsorbed dye on the surface of the biomaterial. It was shown that under optimal conditions, the environmentally friendly and inexpensive eggshell could be a reliable adsorbent for Remazol dye removal from wastewater.

Porous ionic liquid polymer: A reusable adsorbent with broad operating pH range for speciation of nitrate and nitrite

Ionic liquids (ILs) are a class of fluids with unique physicochemical properties employing polymeric substances emerging new materials. Solidification of ILs into porous materials generates porous ionic liquid polymers that combine the unique characteristics of ILs with common porous materials and polymers. In this study, it's the first time the porous ionic liquid polymer was chosen as a sorbent for extraction and speciation of nitrite and nitrate. Porous IL was prepared through polymerization of 1-allyl-3-methylimidazolium bromide monomers in the presence of azobisisobutyronitrile (AIBN) and crosslinking of ethylene glycol dimethyl acrylate (EGDMA). Parameters affecting the adsorbent performance were optimized. Under the optimal conditions, correlation coefficient (R²) was 0.9996 and LOD was 0.1 µg L^-1. This method presented the linearity in the concentration range between 0.1-100 µg L^-1 and the relative standard deviation was 3.2%. Finally, the adsorption behavior of the obtained sorbent for nitrate and nitrite determination in various real samples was evaluated. The result indicates that the porous ionic liquid polymer showed high adsorption capacity (233 mg g^-1). The convenient preparation of the porous ionic liquid material, as well as high adsorption capacity for anionic pollutants predicted its broad application potential in anion removal materials.

A ligand-anchored optical composite material for efficient vanadium(ii) adsorption and detection in wastewater

A ligand-anchored composite material was prepared for vanadium (V(ii)) ion capturing. The pH was found to be a key factor in both detection and removal operations. The composite material exhibited the high adsorption capacity of 492.61 mg g⁻¹.

Investigation of novel nanomaterial for the removal of toxic substances from contaminated water

Ligand-functionalized nanomaterials exhibit great potential for the removal of hazardous substances from the environment and industrial wastewater. In this work, a composite nanosphere material was fabricated using mesoporous silica and organic ligand, and employed for the efficient detection and subsequent removal of toxic sulfanilamide (SNA) from waste samples. The organic ligand 2-naphthol was successfully conjugated onto the mesoporous nanospheres, which then captured SNA under suitable conditions. A naked-eye color change was observed even when a trace amount of SNA interacted with the material, which is the most promising advantage of the fabricated material. A low limit of detection and quantification limit were also determined, and the new nanosphere material revealed the ultra-trace detection performance of 0.27 μg L⁻¹ of SNA in aqueous media. The effect of solution pH, competing ions, color optimization and initial concentration of SNA on the nanosphere material was investigated under the optimum conditions. The nanosphere material exhibited rapid adsorption properties, and its maximum adsorption capability approached 79.20 mg g⁻¹. Several compounds were examined as common interfering substances including vanillin, glucose, lactose, starch and sucrose, which did not adversely interfere in both the detection and adsorption systems using the proposed nanosphere material. The data emphasized that the proposed material is highly suitable for the capture of SNA from contaminated water based on its selectivity, sensitivity, cost-effectiveness and eco-friendly approach. The results also indicate that this nanosphere material will attract attention from researchers for the efficient and selective capture of the toxic SNA.
