Coordinating ability of phenylenediamines

Synthesis, structure, spectroscopy and redox chemistry of square-planar nickel(ii) complexes with tetradentate o-phenylenedioxamidates and related ligands

A series of four-coordinate square-planar nickel(II) complexes of o-phenylenebis(N'-methyloxamidate)(L1) and related o-phenylene(N'-methyloxamidate)oxamate (L2) and o-phenylenebis(oxamate)(L3) tetradentate ligands have been synthesized and characterized structurally, spectroscopically and electrochemically. The parent nickel(II)-L1 complex presents an intense MLCT band in the UV region (lambda max = 357 nm) and a distinctive 1 s --> 4p CT satellite in the Ni K-edge XANES spectrum (E = 8339.2 eV). These features together with the short Ni-N(amidate) bond lengths (1.85-1.93 A) as revealed by the analysis of the Ni K-edge EXAFS spectrum and confirmed by single-crystal X-ray diffraction are typical of square-planar low spin (S = 0) Ni(II) ions. The dianionic nickel(II) complexes, [Ni(II)L(i)](2-)(i = -3), experience two redox processes in acetonitrile at 25 degrees C. The first redox process, at moderately low potentials (E1 = 0.12-0.52 V vs. SCE), is a reversible one-electron metal-centered oxidation to the corresponding monoanionic nickel(III) complexes, [Ni(III)L(i)]-. The second redox process, at relatively high potentials (E2 = 0.86-1.04 V vs. SCE), is a quasireversible to irreversible one-electron oxidation largely centered on the o-benzenediamidate fragment of the non-innocent ligand, yielding the corresponding neutral nickel(iii) complexes with a o-benzosemiquinonediimine pi-cation radical ligand, [Ni(III)(L(i))*+]. The singly and doubly oxidized species of the parent nickel(II)-L1 complex have been prepared by chemical oxidation and characterized spectroscopically in acetonitrile at -40 degrees C. The stable singly oxidized nickel(III)-L1 species presents an intense LMCT band in the NIR region (lambda max = 910 nm) and a rhombic X-band EPR spectrum (g1 = 2.193, g2 = 2.080 and g3 = 2.006) characteristic of square-planar low spin (S = 1/2) Ni(III) ions. The unstable double oxidized nickel(III)-L1 pi-cation radical species exhibits a rather intense visible band (lambda max = 645 nm) that is tentatively assigned as a MLCT transition from the Ni(III)-benzosemiquinone type ground state to the Ni(IV) excited state.

Molecular and electronic structure of square-planar nickel(ii), nickel(iii) and nickel(iii)π-cation radical complexes with a tetradentate o-phenylenedioxamidate redox-active ligand

The molecular and electronic structures of the electron transfer series of four-coordinate square-planar nickel complexes with the ligand o-phenylenebis(N'-methyloxamidate), [NiL]z (z = 2-, 1-, 0), have been evaluated by DFT and TDDFT calculations, and most of their experimentally available structural and spectroscopic properties (X. Ottenwaelder et al., Dalton Trans., 2005, DOI: 10.1039/b502478a) have been reasonably reproduced at the B3LYP level of theory. The anionic species [NiL]2- and [NiL]- are genuine low-spin nickel II and nickel III complexes with diamagnetic singlet (S = 0) and paramagnetic doublet (S = 1/2) states, respectively. The nickel III complex presents shorter Ni-N(amidate) bond distances (1.85-1.90 A) than the parent nickel II complex (1.88-1.93 A) and characteristic LMCT bands in the NIR region (lambda max = 794 and 829 nm) while the analogous MLCT bands for the nickel(II) complex are in the UV region (lambda max = 346 and 349 nm). The neutral species [NiL] is a nickel III o-benzosemiquinonediimine pi-cation radical complex with a diamagnetic singlet (S = 0) and a paramagnetic triplet (S = 1) states fairly close in energy but fundamentally different in orbital configuration. The singlet metal-radical ground state results from the antiferromagnetic coupling between the 3d(yz) orbital of the Ni III ion (S(M) = 1/2) and the pi(b) orbital of the benzosemiquinone-type radical ligand (S(L) = 1/2), which have a large overlap and thus strong covalent bonding. The triplet metal-radical excited state involves the ferromagnetic coupling between the Ni III 3d(zx) orbital and the benzosemiquinone-type pi(b) orbital, which are orthogonal to each other. The singlet and triplet states of the nickel III pi-cation radical complex possess characteristic quinoid-type short-long-short alternating sequence of C-C bonds in the benzene ring, as well as intense MLCT transitions in the VIS (lambda max = 664 nm) and NIR (lambda max = 884 nm) regions, respectively.

Structural modelling of optical and electrochemical properties of 4-aminodiphenylamines – optoelectronic studies on a polyaniline repeating unit

Amino-diphenylanilines and their planarized and twisted model compounds have been investigated by steady state and time-resolved absorption and emission, as well as by spectroelectrochemistry. These polyaniline model compounds show that the observation of excited states with full charge separation is linked to molecular twisting where the diaminobenzene is the donor and the phenyl group the acceptor. The observable charge transfer fluorescence shows the characteristic features of twisted intramolecular charge transfer (TICT) excited states, i.e. forbidden emissive properties and strong solvatochromic red shift. The transient absorption spectrum of the TICT state matches the ground state absorption spectrum of the electrochemically produced radical cation of the molecule. This is the first example where excited-state properties of the neutral and ground state properties of the radical cation are directly linked.

Electrocatalytic Reactions Mediated by N,N,N‘,N‘-Tetraalkyl-1,4-phenylenediamine Redox Liquid Microdroplet-Modified Electrodes: Chemical and Photochemical Reactions In, and At the Surface of, Femtoliter Droplets

The electro-oxidation of electrolytically unsupported ensembles of N,N-diethyl-N',N'-dialkyl-para-phenylenediamine (DEDRPD, R = n-butyl, n-hexyl, and n-heptyl) redox liquid femtoliter volume droplets immobilized on a basal plane pyrolytic graphite electrode is reported in the presence of aqueous electrolytes. Electron transfer at these redox liquid modified electrodes is initiated at the microdroplet-electrode-electrolyte three-phase boundary. Dependent on both the lipophilicity of the redox oil and that of the aqueous electrolyte, ion uptake into or expulsion from the organic deposits is induced electrolytically. In the case of hydrophobic electrolytes, redox-active ionic liquids are synthesized, which are shown to catalyze the oxidation of l-ascorbic acid over the surface of the droplets. In contrast, the photoelectrochemical reduction of the anaesthetic reagent halothane proceeds within the droplet deposits and is mediated by the ionic liquid precursor (the DEDRPD oil).

Molecular and Electronic Structures of Bis-(o-diiminobenzosemiquinonato)metal(II) Complexes (Ni, Pd, Pt), Their Monocations and -Anions, and of Dimeric Dications Containing Weak Metal−Metal Bonds

Two series of square planar, diamagnetic, neutral complexes of nickel(II), palladium(II), and platinum(II) containing two N,N-coordinated o-diiminobenzosemiquinonate(1-) pi radical ligands have been synthesized and characterized by UV-vis and (1)H NMR spectroscopy: [M(II)((2)L(ISQ))(2)], M = Ni (1), Pd (2), Pt (3), and [M(II)((3)L(ISQ))(2)] M = Ni (4), Pd (5), Pt (6). H(2)[(2)L(PDI)] represents 3,5-di-tert-butyl-o-phenylenediamine and H(2)[(3)L(PDI)] is N-phenyl-o-phenylenediamine; (L(ISQ))(1-) is the o-diiminobenzosemiquinonate pi radical anion, and (L(IBQ))(0) is the o-diiminobenzoquinone form of these ligands. The structures of complexes 1, 4, 5, and 6 have been (re)determined by X-ray crystallography at 100 K. Cyclic voltammetry established that the complete electron-transfer series consisting of a dianion, monoanion, neutral complex, a mono- and a dication exists: [M(L)(2)](z)z = -2, -1, 0, 1+, 2+. Each species has been electrochemically generated in solution and their X-band EPR and UV-vis spectra have been recorded. The oxidations and reductions are invariably ligand centered. Two o-diiminobenzoquinones(0) and two fully reduced o-diiminocatecholate(2-) ligands are present in the dication and dianion, respectively, whereas the monocations and monoanions are delocalized mixed valent class III species [M(II)(L(ISQ))(L(IBQ))](+) and [M(II)(L(ISQ))(L(PDI))](-), respectively. One-electron oxidations of 1 and trans-6 yield the diamagnetic dications [cis-[Ni(II)((2)L(ISQ))((2)L(IBQ))](2)]Cl(2) (7) and [trans-[Pt(II)((3)L(ISQ))((3)L(IBQ))](2)](CF(3)SO(3))(2) (8), respectively, which have been characterized by X-ray crystallography; both complexes possess a weak M.M bond and the ligands adopt an eclipsed configuration due to weak bonding interactions via pi stacking.

Theoretical evidence for the singlet diradical character of square planar nickel complexes containing two o-semiquinonato type ligands

Density functional theory and complete active space self-consistent field computations are applied to elucidate the singlet diradical character of square planar, diamagnetic nickel complexes that contain two bidentate ligands derived from o-catecholates, o-phenylenediamines, o-benzodithiolates, o-aminophenolates, and o-aminothiophenolates. In the density functional framework, the singlet diradical character is discussed within the broken symmetry formalism. The singlet-triplet energy gaps, the energy gained from symmetry breaking, the spin distribution in the lowest triplet state, and the form of the magnetic orbitals are applied as indicators for the singlet diradical character. Moreover, a new index for the diradical character is proposed that is based on symmetry breaking. All symmetry breaking criteria show that the complexes obtained from o-catecholates and o-benzodithiolates have the largest and the smallest singlet diradical character, respectively. The singlet diradical character should be intermediate for the complexes derived from o-phenylenediamines, o-aminophenolates, and o-aminothiophenolates. The diradical character of all complexes suggests the presence of Ni(II) central atoms. This is also indicated by the d-populations computed by means of the natural population analysis.

Experimental evidence for the noninnocence of o-aminothiophenolates: coordination chemistry of o-iminothionebenzosemiquinonate(1-) pi-radicals with Ni(II), Pd(II), Pt(II)

The ligand 2-mercapto-3,5-di-tert-butylaniline, H[L(AP)], an o-aminothiophenol, reacts with metal(II) salts of Ni and Pd in CH3CN or C2H5OH in the presence of NEt3 under strictly anaerobic conditions with formation of beige to yellow cis-[M(II)(L(AP))2] (M = Ni (1), Pd (2)) where (L(AP))1- represents the o-aminothiophenolate(1-) form. The crystal structure of cis-[Pd(II)(L(AP))2][HN(C2H5)3][CH3CO2] has been determined by X-ray crystallography. In the presence of air the same reaction produces dark blue solutions from which mixtures of the neutral complexes trans/cis-[M(II)(L(ISQ))2] (M = Ni (1a/1b), Pd (2a/2b), and Pt (3a/3b)) have been isolated as dark blue-black solid materials. By using HPLC the mixture of 3a/3b has been separated into pure samples of 3a and 3b, respectively; (L(ISQ))1- represents the o-iminothionebenzosemiquinonate(1-) pi-radical. The structures of 1a.dmf and 3a.CH2Cl2 have also been determined. All compounds are square-planar and diamagnetic. 1H NMR spectroscopy established the cis <==> trans equilibrium of 1a/1b, 2a/2b, and 3a/3b in CH2Cl2 solution where the isomerization rate is very fast for the Ni, intermediate for the Pd, and very slow for the Pt species. It is shown that the electronic structures of 1a/1b, 2a/2b, 3a, and 3b are best described as diradicals with a singlet ground state. The spectro- and electrochemistries of all complexes display the usual full electron transfer series where the monocation, the neutral species, the mono- and dianions have been spectroscopically characterized. X-band EPR spectra of the monocations [1a/1b]+ and [3a]+ support the assignment of an oxidation-state distribution as predominantly [M(II)(L(ISQ))(L(IBQ))]+ where (L(IBQ))0 represents the o-iminothionequinone level. In contrast, the EPR spectra of the monoanions [1a/1b]- and [3a]- indicate an [M(II)(L(ISQ))(L(AP)-H)]- distribution but with a significant contribution of the [M(I)(L(ISQ))(2)]- resonance hybrid; (L(AP)-H)2- represents the o-imidothiophenolato(2-) oxidation level. Analysis of the geometric features of 120 published structures of complexes containing ligands of the o-aminothiophenolate type show that high precision X-ray crystallography allows to discern the differing protonation and oxidation levels of these ligands. o-Aminothiophenolates are unequivocally shown to be noninnocent ligands; the (L(ISQ))1- radical form is quite prevalent in coordination compounds and the electronic structure of a number of published complexes must be reconsidered.

Molecular and electronic structure of octahedral o-aminophenolato and o-iminobenzosemiquinonato complexes of V(V), Cr(III), Fe(III), and Co(III). Experimental determination of oxidation levels of ligands and metal ions

The coordination chemistry of the ligands 2-anilino-4,6-di-tert-butylphenol, H[L(AP)], and N,N"'-bis[2-(4,6-di-tert-butylphenol]diethylenetriamine, H(2)[(L(AP))N(L(AP))], has been studied with the first-row transition metal ions V, Cr, Fe, and Co. The ligands are noninnocent in the sense that the aminophenolato parts, [L(AP)](-) and [L(AP)-H](2)(-), can be readily oxidized to their o-iminobenzosemiquinonato, [L(ISQ)](-), and o-iminobenzoquinone, [L(ISB)], forms. The following neutral octahedral complexes have been isolated as crystalline materials, and their crystal structures have been determined by X-ray crystallography at 100 K: [Cr(III)(L(ISQ))(3)] (1), [Fe(III)(L(ISQ))(3)] (2), [Co(III)(L(ISQ))(3)] (3), [V(V)(L(ISQ))(L(AP)-H)(2)] (4), [V(V)(L(AP)-H)(2)(L(AP))] (5), and [V(V)O[(L(AP))N(L(AP)-H)]] (6). From variable-temperature magnetic susceptibility measurements and X-band EPR spectroscopy it has been established that they possess the ground states: 1, S = 0; 2, S = 1; 3, S = (3)/(2); 4, S = (1)/(2); 5, S = 0; 6, S = 0. The o-iminobenzosemiquinonato radicals (S(rad) = (1)/(2)) couple strongly intramolecularly antiferromagnetically to singly occupied orbitals of the t(2g) subshell at the respective metal ion but ferromagnetically to each other in 3 containing a Co(III) ion with a filled t(2g)(6) subshell. It is demonstrated that the oxidation level of the ligands and metal ions can be unequivocally determined by high-quality X-ray crystallography in conjunction with EPR, UV-vis, and Mössbauer spectroscopies. The spectro- and electrochemistry of these complexes have also been studied in detail. Metal- and ligand-based redox chemistry has been observed. The molecular and electronic structures are compared with those of their o-semiquinonato analogues.

Electronic structure of bis(o-iminobenzosemiquinonato)metal complexes (Cu, Ni, Pd). The art of establishing physical oxidation states in transition-metal complexes containing radical ligands

The ligand 2-anilino-4,6-di-tert-butylphenol and its 2-(3,5-dichloroanilino)-4,6-di-tert-butylphenol analogue react in CH(3)CN or CH(3)OH solutions with divalent transition metal ions in the presence of air and triethylamine. Depending on the metal:ligand ratio (1:1, 1:2, or 1:3) and the presence (or absence) of the cyclic amine 1,4-dimethyl-1,4,7-triazacyclononane (dmtacn), the following complexes have been isolated as crystalline solids: [Co(III)(L(ISQ))(3)] (1); [Cu(II)(dmtacn)(L(ISQ))]PF(6) (2); [Cu(II)(L(ISQ))(2)] (3); [Ni(II)(L(ISQ))(2)] (4a); [Ni(II)((Cl)L(ISQ))(2)] (4b); [Pd(II)(L(ISQ))(2)] (5). (L(ISQ))(-) represents the monoanionic o-iminobenzosemiquinonate radical (S(rad) = (1)/(2)). Compounds 1-5 have been characterized by single-crystal X-ray crystallography at 100(2) K. For all complexes it is unambiguously established that the O,N-coordinated o-iminobenzosemiquinonato(1-) ligand is present. Complexes 3, 4b, and 5 are square planar molecules which possess an S(t) = (1)/(2), 0, and 0 ground state, respectively, as was established by (1)H NMR and EPR spectroscopies and variable-temperature magnetic susceptibility measurements. Complex 2 possesses an S(t) = 1 ground state which is attained via strong intramolecular ferromagnetic coupling (J = +195 cm(-1)) between the d(x)2-(y)2 magnetic orbital of the Cu(II) ion and the pi-orbital of the ligand radical. Complex 1 contains three mutually orthogonal (L(ISQ))(-*) ligands and has an S(t) = (3)/(2) ground state. It is shown that the electronic structure of 4a and 5 is adequately described as singlet diradical containing a divalent, diamagnetic d(8) configurated central metal ion and two strongly antiferromagnetically coupled (L(ISQ))(-) radical ligands. It is concluded that the same electronic structure prevails in the classic bis(o-diiminobenzosemiquinonato)- and bis(o-benzosemiquinonato)metal complexes of Ni(II), Pd(II), and Pt(II). The electrochemistry of all complexes has been investigated in detail. For 3, 4a, and 5 a series of reversible one-electron-transfer waves leads to the formation of the anions and cations [M(L)(2)](2-),(1-),(1+),(2+) which have been characterized spectroelectrochemically. All redox processes are shown to be ligand-based.
