Determination of organotin compounds in water by headspace solid phase microextraction with gas chromatography–mass spectrometry

This investigation evaluates headspace solid-phase microextraction (HS-SPME) coupled with gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) to determine trace levels of organotins in water. The organotins were derivatized in situ with sodium tetraethylborate and adsorbed on a poly(dimethysiloxane) (PDMS)-coated fused silica fiber. The SPME experimental procedures to extract organotins in water were at pH 5, with extraction and derivatization simultaneously at 45 degrees C for 30 min in a 2% sodium tetraethylborate solution and a sample solution volume in the ratio of 1:1, and desorption in the splitless injection port of the GC at 260 degrees C for 2 min. Detection limits are determined to be in the low ng/L range. According to the analysis, the linearity range is from 10 to 10,000 ng/L with R.S.D. values below 12% except triphenyltin (24%). The proposed method was tested by analyzing surface seawater from the harbors on the Taiwanese coast for organotins residues. Some organotins studied were detected in the analyzed samples. Results of this study demonstrate the adequacy of the headspace SPME-GC-MS method for analyzing organotins in sea water samples.

Analysis of organochlorine pesticides in water by novel activated carbon fiber-solid phase microextraction coupled with gas chromatography-mass spectrometry

This study describes a fast activated carbon fiber-solid phase microextraction (ACF-SPME) method for determining organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) in water. The pesticides in this study consist of Hexachlorobenzene (HCB) and alpha-, beta-, gamma-hexachlorocyclohexanes (HCHs). The optimal experimental procedures for the adsorption and desorption of four OCPs were evaluated. The linearity was obtained with a RSD of 20% for the OCPs studied over a range from 1.0 to 100 microg/L. The limits of detection at ng/L level were achieved with GC-MS under selected ion monitoring (SIM) acquisition mode. The proposed method was applied to the determination of OCPs concentration in tap water. The results have demonstrated the suitability of the ACF-SPME-GC-MS approach for the analysis of multi-residue OCPs in water. Compared to the commercial fiber, ACF has shown its advantages in solvent-resistance, thermal stability, and the cost. The results obtained in this study suggest that ACF is a promising choice in solid phase microextraction.

Determination of organochlorine pesticides in ground water using solid-phase microextraction followed by dual-column gas chromatography with electron-capture detection

A rapid, sensitive, convenient, and highly quality-assured method is presented for the determination of 19 organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) in small samples (10 ml) of ground water. Samples are initially fortified with 2,4,5,6-tetrachloro-m-xylene (surrogate) and decachlorobiphenyl (retention time marker), then extracted with a 30-micron thickness polydimethylsiloxane solid-phase microextraction fiber. The analytes collected are thermally desorbed in a heated gas chromatographic inlet, separated using independent fused-silica capillary columns ("primary" and "confirmatory"), and detected using electron-capture detection. Two independent statistical procedures were used to evaluate the detection limits, which typically range between 10 and 40 ng l-1, for these analytes. Method performance was also evaluated using two additional protocols employing "performance evaluation" samples, in which authentic ground water samples were fortified to ca. 100 ng l-1 in each of at least six OCPs. The method satisfies additional strict criteria based on uniformity of fiber performance and minimal degradation of the thermally-sensitive analytes endrin and DDT.
