The Structures of the Group 15 Element(III) Halides and Halogenoanions

A step closer to the binary: the 1∞[Bi6I20]2−anion

A series of crown ether based iodidobismuthates explores the influence of increasing I/Bi ratio and I⋯I interactions on the compounds’ optical properties. This includes [(Dibenzo-18-crown-6)Na(MeCN)₂]₂1∞[Bi₆I₂₀], which contains a strand-like anion with an unprecedentedly low I/Bi ratio.

Poly[bis-(1-carbamoylguanidinium) [tri-μ-chlorido-dichloridobismuthate(III)]]

The structure of the title organic–inorganic hybrid compound, {(C₂H₇N₄O)₂[BiCl₅]}_n, consists of corrugated chains parallel to [100] of corner-joined [BiCl₆] octa­hedra, separated by layers of organic 1-carbamoylguanidinum cations. The crystal cohesion is achieved by N—H⋯O and N—H⋯Cl hydrogen bonds, which link the organic and inorganic parts of the structure.

Octahedral distortion caused by hydrogen bonding in tris(diethylammonium) hexachloridoantimonate(III)

The factors influencing the distortion of inorganic anions in the structures of chloridoantimonates(III) with organic cations, in spite of numerous structural studies on those compounds, have not been clearly described and separated. The title compound, [(C(2)H(5))(2)NH(2)](3)[SbCl(6)], consisting of isolated distorted [SbCl(6)](3-) octahedra that have C(3) symmetry and [(C(2)H(5))(2)NH(2)](+) cations, unequivocally shows the role played by hydrogen bonding in the geometry variations of inorganic anions. The organic cations, which are linked to the inorganic substructure through N-H...Cl hydrogen bonds, are clearly responsible for the distortion of the octahedral coordination of Sb(III) in terms of differences (Delta) in both Sb-Cl bond lengths [Delta = 0.4667 (6) A] and Cl-Sb-Cl angles [Delta = 9.651 (17) degrees].

A Series of New Copper Iodobismuthates: Structural Relationships, Optical Band Gaps Affected by Dimensionality, and Distinct Thermal Stabilities

Three new copper iodobismuthates, red tetranuclear [n-Bu(4)N][Cu(2)(CH(3)CN)(2)Bi(2)I(10)] (1), dark-red infinite linear [Et(4)N](2n)[Cu(2)Bi(2)I(10)](n) (2), and black polymeric ladderlike [Cu(CH(3)CN)(4)](2n)[Cu(2)Bi(2)I(10)](n) (3), crystallize from solutions of BiI3 and CuI in the presence of different cations. A regular structural relationship from 0-D (1) to 1-D linear anion chains (2) to 1-D ladderlike anion chains (3) is observed. The self-assembly of the basic building unit Cu(2)Bi(2)I(10) as altered by different cations is proposed to be the driving force for their formation. The optical band gaps exhibit a structure-related decrease from 1 to 2/3, in agreement with their color changes and the density functional theory (DFT) calculation results. The electronic structures and the relationship with corresponding monobismuth analogues and the Ag-Bi isotypes are discussed on the basis of DFT calculations. In spite of their structural similarities, the compounds are distinctive thermally: 2 is stable to 230 degrees C, 1 undergoes a solvent loss at 85 degrees C to form a new phase that is thermally stable to 230 degrees C, and 3 releases a solvent molecule and decomposes at 80 degrees C into BiI(3) and CuI. The essential reasons for these differences are discussed.

Silver Iodobismuthates: Syntheses, Structures, Properties, and Theoretical Studies of [Bi2Ag2I102-]n and [Bi4Ag2I162-]n

Two novel silver iodobismuthates have been obtained: (Et4N)2n-[Bi2Ag2I10]n (1) with one-dimensional infinite chains built from bimetallic tetranuclear units and (Et4N)2n[Bi4Ag2I16]n (2) with a two-dimensional 44 grid assembly of the tetranuclear Bi4I16 subunits as nodes and Ag atoms as linkages. Their optical band gaps, 2.05 and 1.93 eV, fit nicely in a size correlation of the Bi/I subunit, which is further supported by the density functional theory studies.

Effect of mono- versus di-ammonium cation of 2,2'-bithiophene derivatives on the structure of organic-inorganic hybrid materials based on iodo metallates

2,2'-bithiophene derivatives, 5-ammoniumethylsulfanyl-2,2'-bithiophene (AESBT) and 5,5'-bis(ammoniumethylsulfanyl)-2,2'-bithiophene (BAESBT), have been designed for their incorporation in organic-inorganic materials based on iodometalates. Three layered compounds, (BAESBT)PbI(4), (AESBT)(4)Pb(3)I(10), and (AESBT)(3)Bi(2)I(9), have been synthesized as crystals from slowly cooled aqueous solution containing metal halide and bithiophene derivative salts. When starting from the diammonium cation, (BAESBT)PbI(4) hybrid perovskite is obtained. (BAESBT)PbI(4) adopts a triclinic cell (P1) with the lattice parameters a = 8.4741(5) A, b = 8.9255(6) A, c = 16.876(1) A, alpha = 88.328(5) degrees, beta = 81.806(4) degrees, gamma = 88.864(5) degrees, Z = 2. In the structure, PbI(4)(2)(-) perovskite sheets and diammonium cation layers alternate along c. The incorporation of the corresponding monoammonium cation (AESBT) leads to a head to tail arrangement of the molecules in the (AESBT)(4)Pb(3)I(10) hybrid, precluding the formation of the perovskite layers. (AESBT)(4)Pb(3)I(10) is orthorhombic, Pna2(1), with a = 38.333(4) A, b = 22.239(3) A, c = 8.448(2) A, Z = 4. The structure consists of corrugated layers of Pb(3)I(10)(4)(-) separated by organic layers of monoammonium cations. A similar relative situation of molecules in organic layers is observed in (AESBT)(3)Bi(2)I(9), with the inorganic sheets being built up from Bi(2)I(9)(3)(-) entities. (AESBT)(3)Bi(2)I(9) crystallizes in an orthorhombic cell (P2(1)2(1)2(1)) with a = 8.4564(6) A, b = 21.368(2) A, c = 30.747(2) A, Z = 4. In the three compounds, the molecular packings appear different, underlining the interplay between both organic and inorganic components. New packings are stabilized, as illustrated by an original mixed kappa-alpha type arrangement of the bithiophene units in (AESBT)(3)Bi(2)I(9). Furthermore, molecular interactions, especially of S.S type, appear stronger in the hybrids based on the monoammonium cations. The electrical conductivity of a (BAESBT)PbI(4) single crystal has also been investigated, revealing a semiconductive behavior with a characteristic energy of E(g) = 2.535 eV.

The structure of tri(cyclohexyl)tin chloride between 108 and 298 K: a compound in which molecular dimensions vary with temperature

Care is necessary when relating physical data obtained at one temperature on compounds showing significant intermolecular interactions to X-ray data obtained at other temperatures. This is revealed by the determination of the structure of tri(cyclohexyl)tin chloride at nine different temperatures between 108 and 298 K. In the crystal, the molecules pack in chains parallel to the c axis with the Sn and Cl atoms close to the plane, with y = 0.25. At low temperature, successive molecules in the chain are related by the glide plane in space group P2(1)/c, and there is significant intermolecular interaction. As the temperature is raised, the Cy(3)SnCl.Sn interactions weaken and the intramolecular Sn-Cl bonds strengthen. At about 248 K, there is an order-disorder transition to space group P2(1)/m with the c axis halved, and at room temperature the structure is best described as comprising discrete molecules, as previously reported. Thus, some of the molecular dimensions, in particular the Sn-Cl bond lengths, are not constant but are functions of temperature.

Structure and optical properties of several organic-inorganic hybrids containing corner-sharing chains of bismuth iodide octahedra

Two organic-inorganic bismuth iodides of the form (H3N-R-NH3)BiI5 are reported, each containing long and relatively flexible organic groups, R. The norganic framework in each case consists of distorted BiI6 octahedra sharing cis vertexes to form zigzag chains. Crystals of (H3NC18H24S2NH3)BiI5 were grown from a slowly cooled ethylene glycol/2-butanol solution containing bismuth(III) iodide and AETH.2HI, where AETH = 1,6-bis[5'-(2' '-aminoethyl)-2'-thienyl]hexane. The new compound, (H2AETH)BiI5, adopts an orthorhombic (Aba2) cell with the lattice parameters a = 20.427(3) A, b = 35.078(5) A, c = 8.559(1) A, and Z = 8. The structure consists of corrugated layers of BiI5(2-) chains, with Bi-I bond lengths ranging from 2.942(3) to 3.233(3) A, separated by layers of the organic (H2AETH)(2+) cations. Crystals of the analogous (H3NC12H24NH3)BiI5 compound were also prepared from a concentrated aqueous hydriodic acid solution containing bismuth(III) iodide and the 1,12-dodecanediamine (DDDA) salt, DDDA.2HI. (H2DDDA)BiI5 crystallizes in an orthorhombic (Ibam) cell with a = 17.226(2) A, b = 34.277(4) A, c = 8.654(1) A, and Z = 8. The Bi-I bonds range in length from 2.929(1) to 3.271(1) A. While the inorganic chain structure is nearly identical for the two title compounds, as well as for the previously reported (H3NC6H12NH3)BiI5 [i.e., (H2DAH)BiI5] structure, the packing of the chains is strongly influenced by the choice of organic cation. Optical absorption spectra for thermally ablated thin films of the three organic-inorganic hybrids containing BiI5(2-) chains are reported as a function of temperature (25-290 K). The dominant long-wavelength feature in each case is attributed to an exciton band, which is apparent at room temperature and, despite the similar inorganic chain structure, varies in position from 491 to 541 nm (at 25 K).

Organic-inorganic perovskites containing trivalent metal halide layers: the templating influence of the organic cation layer

Thin sheetlike crystals of the metal-deficient perovskites (H2AEQT)M2/3I4 [M = Bi or Sb; AEQT = 5,5"'-bis-(aminoethyl)-2,2':5',2'':5'',2'''-quaterthiophene] were formed from slowly cooled ethylene glycol/2-butanol solutions containing the bismuth(III) or antimony(III) iodide and AEQT.2HI salts. Each structure was refined in a monoclinic (C2/m) subcell, with the lattice parameters a = 39.712(13) A, b = 5.976(2) A, c = 6.043(2) A, beta = 92.238(5) degrees, and Z = 2 for M = Bi and a = 39.439(7) A, b = 5.952(1) A, c = 6.031(1) A, beta = 92.245(3) degrees, and Z = 2 for M = Sb. The trivalent metal cations locally adopt a distorted octahedral coordination, with M-I bond lengths ranging from 3.046(1) to 3.218(3) A (3.114 A average) for M = Bi and 3.012(1) to 3.153(2) A (3.073 A average) for M = Sb. The new organic-inorganic hybrids are the first members of a metal-deficient perovskite family consisting of (Mn+)2/nV(n-2)/nX4(2-) sheets, where V represents a vacancy (generally left out of the formula) and the metal cation valence, n, is greater than 2. The organic layers in the AEQT-based organic-inorganic hybrids feature edge-to-face aromatic interactions among the rigid, rodlike quaterthiophene moieties, which may help to stabilize the unusual metal-deficient layered structures.
