Digenean parasites of deep-sea teleosts: a review and case studies of intrageneric phylogenies

Readers approaching this book should not expect a review of the diverse forms of parasitic organisms or a series of illustrations of the extraordinary adaptations parasitism has provided. This is a book of theory and graph, of generalization and synthesis. It is aimed at a broad audience, with the hope that the reader ‘when later gazing at a bird gliding overhead, will see not just the bird, but will also see (or at least imagine!) the flying assemblage of parasite species’.

Advances and Trends in the Molecular Systematics of the Parasitic Platyhelminthes

The application of molecular systematics to the parasitic Platyhelminthes (Cestoda, Digenea and Monogenea) over the last decade has advanced our understanding of their interrelationships and evolution substantially. Here we review the current state of play and the early works that led to the molecular-based hypotheses that now predominate in the field; advances in their systematics, taxonomy, classification and phylogeny, as well as trends in species circumscription, molecular targets and analytical methods are discussed for each of the three major parasitic groups. A by-product of this effort has been an ever increasing number of parasitic flatworms characterized genetically, and the useful application of these data to the diagnosis of animal and human pathogens, and to the elucidation of life histories are presented. The final section considers future directions in the field, including taxon sampling, molecular targets of choice, and the current and future utility of mitochondrial and nuclear genomics in systematic study.

The bathymetric distribution of the digenean parasites of deep-sea fishes

The bathymetric range of 149 digenean species recorded deeper than 200 m, the approximate depth of the continental shelf/slope break, are presented in graphical form. It is found that only representatives of the four families Lepocreadiidae, Fellodistomidae, Derogenidae and Hemiuridae reach to abyssal regions (>4000 m). Three other families, the Lecithasteridae, Zoogonidae and Opecoelidae, have truly deep-water forms reaching deeper than 3000 m. Bathymetric data are available for the Acanthocolpidae, Accacoeliidae, Bucephalidae, Cryptogonimidae, Faustulidae, Gorgoderidae, Monorchiidae and Sanguinicolidae showing that they reach deeper than 200 m. No bathymetric data are available for the members of the Bivesiculidae and Hirudinellidae which are reported from deep-sea hosts. These results indicate that only seventeen out of the 150 or so digenean families are reported in the deep sea.

Deep-sea hydrothermal vent parasites: why do we not find more?

While parasitism is recognized as the most common mode of existence on the planet, and hosts from virtually all ecosystems have been studied, very little is known about the parasites found in deep-sea hydrothermal vent ecosystems and even less is known about their ecology, evolution, and effects on their hosts. The purpose of this work is to offer a comprehensive review of our state of knowledge about parasitism in the deep-sea vents and to pose and address specific questions for future studies. Because the deep-sea environment itself may influence the number and types of parasites found in the vents, non-vent (below 1000 m) and vent deep-sea data were used in a comparative analysis to account for this factor as a potential major determinant of the parasite fauna in the vents. Based upon analysis of these data, it is highly likely that the reason why so few parasites are currently known from deep-sea vents, even given the low diversity of hosts in this ecosystem, is simply that their inconspicuous nature has caused them to be overlooked by vent biologists.

Tormopsolus attenuatus n. sp. (Digenea: Acanthocolpidae) from Seriola hippos (Perciformes: Carangidae), Western Australia, with some observations on the relationships in the genus

A new acanthocolpid, Tormopsolus attenuatus n. sp., is described from the carangid Seriola hippos from waters off the coast of SW Australia. A cladistic analysis of the genus using 31 morphological and metrical characters indicates that the closest species is T. asiatica Parukhin, 1976 status amend. (previously T. orientalis asiatica). T. attenuatus differs from T. asiatica in its smaller overall dimensions, more attenuated outline, relatively shorter post-testicular region, vitelline interruption at the level of the ovary, papillae on the oral sucker and, possibly, much longer genital atrium. Other similar species, T. orientalis Yamaguti, 1934 and T. medius Reimer, 1983, differ in having interruptions of the vitelline fields at the level of both testes and at the level of the ovary.
