Abstract
Porous organic frameworks (POFs), a general term for covalent-organic frameworks (COFs), covalent triazine frameworks (CTFs), porous aromatic frameworks (PAFs), etc., are constructed from organic building monomers with strong covalent bonds and have generated great interest among researchers. The remarkable features, such as large surface areas, permanent porosity, high thermal and chemical stability, and convenient functionalization, promote the great potential of POFs in diverse applications. A critical overview of the important development in the design and synthesis of COFs, CTFs, and PAFs is provided and their state-of-the-art applications in analytical chemistry are discussed. POFs and their functional composites have been explored as advanced materials in "turn-off" or "turn-on" fluorescence detection and novel stationary phases for chromatographic separation, as well as a promising adsorbent for sample preparation methods. In addition, the prospects for the synthesis and utilization of POFs in analytical chemistry are also presented. These prospects can offer an outlook and reference for further study of the applications of POFs.

Inhibition of water adsorption into polar solid-phase microextraction materials with ultrathin polydimethylsiloxane coating for thermal desorption-gas chromatography analysis. J Chromatogr A 2018; 1578:1-7. [PMID: 30337167 DOI: 10.1016/j.chroma.2018.10.013] [Citation(s) in RCA: 6] [Impact Index Per Article: 1.0] [Reference Citation Analysis] [Abstract] [Key Words] [Track Full Text] [Journal Information] [Subscribe] [Scholar Register] [Received: 08/19/2018] [Revised: 10/05/2018] [Accepted: 10/09/2018] [Indexed: 11/23/2022]
Abstract
Solid-phase microextraction (SPME) coupled with thermal desorption-gas chromatography (TD-GC) has become a powerful analysis tool for volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and semi-volatile organic compounds (SVOCs) in water samples. However, water adsorption into polar microextraction phase is usually unavoidable during the extraction process, and the burst of large amounts of water vapour during thermal desorption will cause serious problems to GC separation and detectors. Pawliszyn's group had demonstrated that the tens of micron-thick, defect-free polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) coating could act as a perfect barrier for water adsorption and offer much better compatibility in complex matrices. However, the PDMS overcoat largely decreased the uptake rate of polar analytes into the inner sorbent. In order to quantify the effect of PDMS coating thickness on water adsorption amount and the extraction kinetics, ultrathin PDMS layer was used to coat the polar extraction phase with polyimide (PI) as a model in this work. It was surprising to find that the PDMS coating with the thickness less than one micron can decrease the water adsorption by 96%, while the extraction efficiency for polar analytes (phenolic compounds and nitroaromatic explosives) was decreased by less than 20% at the extraction time of 30 min. Moreover, the kinetic data showed that the thinner the PDMS coating was, the less the uptake rate of polar analytes into PI extraction phase decreased. Finally, polar poly (phthalazine ether sulfone ketone) (PPESK) extraction phase was also coated with ultrathin PDMS coating to verify the universality of the strategy. Generally, the water adsorption problem in polar SPME was overcome to a great extent, and the extraction efficiency of polar analytes was mainly preserved with this ultrathin PDMS coating, which could broaden the application of SPME in the environmental field.

Abstract
A simple, rapid, and reliable headspace solid-phase microextraction (HS-SPME) procedure, reinforced by applying vacuum in the extraction vial, was developed. It was applied for the extraction of nicotine in solid samples prior to determination by gas chromatography-flame ionization detection (GC-FID). First, the surface of a narrow stainless steel wire was made porous and adhesive by platinization to obtain a durable, higher surface area, and resistant fiber. Then, a thin film of sulfonated graphene/polyaniline (Sulf-G/PANI) nanocomposite was synthesized and simultaneously coated on the platinized fiber using the electrophoretic deposition (EPD) method. It was demonstrated that the extraction efficiency remarkably increased by applying the reduced-pressure condition in the extraction vial. To evaluate the conventional HS-SPME and vacuum-assisted HS-SPME (VA-HS-SPME) platforms, all experimental parameters affecting the extraction efficiency including desorption time and temperature, extraction time and temperature and moisture content of sample matrix were optimized. The highest extraction efficiency was obtained at 60°C, 10min (extraction temperature and time) and 280°C, 2min (desorption condition), for VA-HS-SPME strategy, while for conventional HS-SPME the extraction and desorption conditions found to be 100°C, 30min and 280°C, 2min, respectively. The Sulf-G/PANI coated fiber showed high thermal stability, good chemical/mechanical resistance, and long lifetime. For analysis of nicotine in solid samples using VA-HS-SPME-GC-FID, linear dynamic range (LDR) was 0.01-30μgg-1 (R2=0.996), the relative standard deviation (RSD%, n=6), for analyses of 1μgg-1 nicotine was calculated 3.4% and limit of detection (LOD) found to be 0.002μgg-1. The VA-HS-SPME-GC-FID strategy was successfully carried out for quantitation of nicotine in hair and tobacco real samples.

Abstract
Inspired by the biological metabolic process, some biomolecules with reversible redox functional groups have been used as promising electrode materials for rechargeable batteries, supercapacitors and other charge-storage devices. Although these biomolecule-based electrode materials possess remarkable beneficial properties, their controllable synthesis and morphology-related properties have been rarely studied. Herein, one dimensional nanostructures based on juglone biomolecules have been successfully fabricated by an antisolvent crystallization and self-assembly method. Moreover, the size effect on their electrochemical charge-storage properties has been investigated. It reveals that the diameters of the one dimensional nanostructure determine their electron/ion transport properties, and the juglone nanowires achieve a higher specific capacitance and rate capability. This work will promote the development of environmentally friendly and high-efficiency energy storage electrode materials.

Abstract
A novel solid-phase microextraction fiber coated with a porous β-cyclodextrin polymer was developed. The porous β-cyclodextrin polymer cross-linked using tetrafluoroterephthalonitrile, possessed well-distributed pores and the largest surface area among current β-cyclodextrin polymers. Scanning electron microscopy revealed that the coating had a continuous wrinkled and folded structure, which guarantees a sufficient loading capacity for contaminants. The properties of the developed fiber were evaluated using headspace solid-phase microextraction of five contaminants as model analytes coupled with gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. Owing to the advantages of a large surface area and three-dimensional cavities, the novel fiber exhibited excellent operational stability and extraction ability. After optimisation of the extraction conditions, including extraction temperature, extraction time, salt effect, and desorption time, validation of the method with water samples achieved good linearity over a wide range (0.01–120 μg L−1) and low detection limits (0.003–1.600 μg L−1). The single-fiber and fiber-to-fiber repeatabilities were 1.7–11.0% and 1.9–11.0%, respectively. The method was applied to the simultaneous analysis of five analytes with satisfactory recoveries (76.6–106.0% for pond water and 89.0–105.9% for rainwater). A novel solid-phase microextraction fiber coated with a porous β-cyclodextrin polymer was developed.![]()

Abstract
Magnetic graphene oxide was modified by four imidazole-based ionic liquids to synthesize materials for the extraction of polysaccharides by magnetic solid-phase extraction. Fucoidan and laminarin were chosen as the representative polysaccharides owing to their excellent pharmaceutical value and availability. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, field-emission scanning electron microscopy, and thermogravimetric analysis were applied to characterize the synthesized materials. Single-factor experiments showed that the extraction efficiency of polysaccharides was affected by the amount of ionic liquids for modification, solid-liquid ratio of brown alga and ethanol, the stirring time of brown alga and ionic liquid-modified magnetic graphene oxide materials, and amount of 1-(3-aminopropyl)imidazole chloride modified magnetic graphene oxide materials added to the brown alga sample solution. The results indicated that 1-(3-aminopropyl)imidazole chloride modified magnetic graphene oxide possessed better extraction ability than graphene oxide, magnetic graphene oxide, and other three ionic-liquid-modified magnetic graphene oxide materials. The highest extraction recoveries of fucoidan and laminarin extracted by 1-(3-aminopropyl)imidazole chloride modified magnetic graphene oxide were 93.3 and 87.2%, respectively. In addition, solid materials could be separated and reused easily owing to their magnetic properties.

Abstract
A benzyl-functionalized crosslinked polymeric ionic liquid (PIL), produced through the co-polymerization of the 1-vinylbenzyl-3-hexadecylimidazolium bis[(trifluoromethyl)sulfonyl]imide (VBHDIM-NTf2) ionic liquid (IL) monomer and 1,12-di(3-vinylbenzylimidazolium)dodecane bis[(trifluoromethyl)sulfonyl]imide ((DVBIM)2C12-2NTf2) IL crosslinker, was successfully used as a sorbent coating in headspace solid-phase microextraction (SPME) coupled to gas chromatography (GC) with flame-ionization detection (FID) to determine seven volatile polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in environmental water samples. Optimum extraction conditions for the PAHs when using the novel sorbent include an extraction temperature of 50°C, an ionic strength content adjusted with 30% (w/v) NaCl in the aqueous sample, and an extraction time of 60 min. The extraction performance of the crosslinked PIL fiber was compared to the SPME commercial coating polydimethylsiloxane fiber. The calibration ranges of the studied PAHs were linear in the range of 0.02-20 µg L-1 for the crosslinked PIL fiber. The accuracy of the proposed method was demonstrated by examining the spiked recoveries of seven PAHs which produced values ranging from 67.2% to 130% (for river- and seawater samples), and precision values lower than 9.4% for a spiked level of 1 µg L-1, and detection limits between 0.01 and 0.04 µg L-1, which supports the sensitivity of the method using GC-FID.

Abstract
A novel method was proposed for the determination of five benzimidazoles (oxfendazole, mebendazole, flubendazole, albendazole, and fenbendazole) using magnetic graphene (G-Fe3O4). G-Fe3O4 was synthesized via in situ chemical coprecipitation. The properties of G-Fe3O4 were characterized by various instrumental methods. G-Fe3O4 exhibited a great adsorption ability and good stability towards analytes. Various experimental parameters that might affect the extraction efficiency such as the amount of G-Fe3O4, extraction solvent, extraction time, and desorption conditions were evaluated. Under the optimized conditions, a method based on G-Fe3O4 magnetic solid-phase extraction coupled with high-performance liquid chromatography was developed. A good linear response was observed in the concentration range of 0.100-100 μg/L for the five benzimidazoles, with correlation coefficients ranging from 0.9966 to 0.9998. The limits of detection (S/N = 3) of the method were between 17.2 and 32.3 ng/L. Trace benzimidazoles in chicken, chicken blood, and chicken liver samples were determined and the concentrations of oxfendazole, mebendazole, flubendazole, and fenbendazole in these samples were 13.0-20.2, 1.62-4.64, 1.94-6.42, and 0.292-1.04 ng/g, respectively. The recovery ranged from 83.0% to 115%, and the relative standard deviations were less than 7.9%. The proposed method was sensitive, reliable, and convenient for the analysis of trace benzimidazoles in food samples.

Abstract
In 2015, more than 30% of erasers were found to contain a PAE content that exceeded the 0.1% limit established by the Quality and Technology Supervision Bureau of Jiangsu Province in China. Thus, strengthening the supervision and regulation of the PAE content in foods and supplies, in particular, remains necessary. Graphene oxide (GO) and its composites have drawn great interests as promising adsorbents for polar and nonpolar compounds. However, GO-based adsorbents are typically restricted by the difficult separation after treatment because of the high pressure in filtration and low density in centrifugation. Herein, a series of novel ionic liquids modified graphene oxide composites (GO-ILs) were prepared as adsorbents for phthalates (PAEs) in eraser samples, which overcame the conventional drawbacks. These novel composites have a combination of the high surface area of graphene oxide and the tunability of the ionic liquids. It is expected that the GO-ILs composites can be used as efficient adsorbents for PAEs from aqueous solution. This work also demonstrated a new technique for GO-based materials applied in sample preparation.

Abstract
In this work, ionic liquid (IL, i.e. 1-hydroxyethyl-3-methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate), carboxyl multiwall carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) and reduced graphene oxide (rGO) were used to prepare three-dimensional porous material (MWCNTs-rGO-IL) by one-step self-assembly, then it was co-electrodeposited with polyaniline (PANI) on stainless steel wires by cyclic voltammetry. The resulting coating (PANI-MWCNTs-rGO-IL) was characterized by using FT-IR and scanning electron microscopy etc, and it showed porous structure and had high thermal stability. Furthermore, it was found to be very suitable for the headspace solid-phase microextraction of alcohols (i.e. octanol, nonanol, geraniol, decanol, undecanol and dodecanol). By coupling with gas chromatography, wide linear ranges and low limits of detection (i.e. 2.2-28.3 ng L-1) were obtained for the alcohols. The coating also presented good repeatability and reproducibility; the relative standard deviations for intra-fiber and fiber-to-fiber were less than 5.6% (n = 5) and 7.0% (n = 5) respectively. In addition, the proposed method was successfully applied to the determination of alcohols in tea drinks, and the recoveries for standards added were 85.6-114%.
