Abstract
Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) can be designed for chemical applications by modulating the size and shape of intracrystalline pores through selection of their nodes and linkers. Zirconium nodes with variable connectivity to organic linkers allow for a broad range of topological nets that have diverse pore structures even for a consistent set of linkers. Identifying an optimal pore structure for a given application, however, is complicated by the large material space of possible MOFs. In this work, molecular dynamics simulations were used to determine how a MOF's topology affects the diffusion of propane and isobutane over the full range of loadings and to understand how MOFs can be tuned to reduce transport limitations for applications in separations and catalysis. High-throughput simulation techniques were employed to efficiently calculate loading-dependent diffusivities in 38 MOFs. The results show that topologies with higher node connectivity have reduced alkane diffusivities compared to topologies with lower node connectivity. Molecular siting techniques were used to elucidate how the pore structures in different topologies affect adsorbate diffusivities.

Abstract
Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) have high potential in gas separation technologies because of their porous structures, large surface areas, and good stabilities. The number of synthesized COFs already reached several hundreds, but only a handful of materials were tested as adsorbents and/or membranes. We used a high-throughput computational screening approach to uncover adsorption-based and membrane-based CO2/H2 separation potentials of 288 COFs, representing the highest number of experimentally synthesized COFs studied to date for precombustion CO2 capture. Grand canonical Monte Carlo (GCMC) simulations were performed to assess CO2/H2 mixture separation performances of COFs for five different cyclic adsorption processes: pressure swing adsorption, vacuum swing adsorption, temperature swing adsorption (TSA), pressure-temperature swing adsorption (PTSA), and vacuum-temperature swing adsorption (VTSA). The results showed that many COFs outperform traditional zeolites in terms of CO2 selectivities and working capacities and PTSA is the best process leading to the highest adsorbent performance scores. Combining GCMC and molecular dynamics (MD) simulations, CO2 and H2 permeabilities and selectivities of COF membranes were calculated. The majority of COF membranes surpass Robeson's upper bound because of their higher H2 permeabilities compared to polymers, indicating that the usage of COFs has enormous potential to replace current materials in membrane-based H2/CO2 separation processes. Performance analysis based on the structural properties showed that COFs with narrow pores [the largest cavity diameter (LCD) < 15 Å] and low porosities (ϕ < 0.75) are the top adsorbents for selective separation of CO2 from H2, whereas materials with large pores (LCD > 20 Å) and high porosities (ϕ > 0.85) are generally the best COF membranes for selective separation of H2 from CO2. These results will help to speed up the engineering of new COFs with desired structural properties to achieve high-performance CO2/H2 separations.

Abstract
A high-performance gas separation membrane for hydrogen (H2) purification is still highly desirable for the sustainable development of our society. Based on the structure of γ-graphyne, we theoretically designed the two-dimensional nanomaterials γ-C4X (X = O, S or Se) with intrinsic pores that may be suitable for gas separation. By first-principles calculations, we obtained the geometric structures of γ-C4X, and confirmed that γ-C4O and γ-C4S are stable at room temperature. Due to the moderate size of the intrinsic pores, γ-C4O exhibits a lower diffusion barrier and higher permeance for H2 than those of γ-C4S. It is worth noting that at room temperature, the high selectivity (1019) for separating H2 from a H2/CH4 mixture by γ-C4O shows great potential for H2 purification. Moreover, the classic molecular dynamics simulations at 300 K demonstrate that H2 can easily permeate through the intrinsic pores of γ-C4O membranes with high permeability and selectivity, which supports our first-principles calculations.

Abstract
High-throughput computational screening of metal organic frameworks (MOFs) enables the discovery of new promising materials for CO2 capture and H2 purification. The number of synthesized MOFs is increasing very rapidly, and computation-ready, experimental MOF databases are being updated. Screening the most recent MOF database is essential to identify the best performing materials among several thousands. In this work, we performed molecular simulations of the most recent MOF database and described both the adsorbent and membrane-based separation performances of 10 221 MOFs for CO2 capture and H2 purification. The best materials identified for pressure swing adsorption, vacuum swing adsorption, and temperature swing adsorption processes outperformed commercial zeolites and previously studied MOFs in terms of CO2 selectivity and adsorbent performance score. We then discussed the applicability of Ideal Adsorbed Solution Theory (IAST), effects of inaccessible local pores and catenation in the frameworks and the presence of impurities in CO2/H2 mixture on the adsorbent performance metrics of MOFs. Very large numbers of MOF membranes were found to outperform traditional polymer and porous membranes in terms of H2 permeability. Our results show that MOFs that are recently added into the updated MOF database have higher CO2/H2 separation potentials than the previously reported MOFs. MOFs with small pores were identified as potential adsorbents for selective capture of CO2 from H2, whereas MOFs with high porosities were the promising membranes for selective separation of H2 from CO2. This study reveals the importance of enriching the number of MOFs in high-throughput computational screening studies for the discovery of new promising materials for CO2/H2 separation.

Abstract
Flexible metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) exhibit a variety of phenomena attractive for basic and applied science. DUT-49(Cu) is one of the remarkable representatives of such MOFs, where phase transitions are coupled to pressure amplification and "negative gas adsorption". In this work we report important insights into structural transitions of DUT-49(Cu) upon physi- and chemisorption of gases and volatile liquids obtained by in situ electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy. In this method, phase transitions are detected via the zero-field splitting in dimeric copper(II) units. First, a new approach was validated upon physisorption of n-butane. Then, using diethyl ether, we for the first time demonstrated that chemisorption can also trigger phase transition in DUT-49(Cu). On the basis of the EPR results, the transition appears completely reversible. The developed EPR-based approach can also be extended to other flexible MOFs containing paramagnetic metal paddlewheels, where high sensitivity and spectral resolution allow in situ studies of stimuli-induced structural variability.

Abstract

Metal
organic frameworks (MOFs) have been considered as potential
adsorbents for adsorption-based CO2/CH4 and
CO2/N2 separations because of their high CO2 selectivities and high working capacities. H2O
in flue gas and natural gas streams affects the gas uptake capacities
of MOFs. However, the presence of H2O is commonly neglected
in high-throughput computational screening studies while assessing
the CO2 separation performances of MOFs. In this study,
the impact of the presence of H2O on the CO2 separation performances of 13 MOFs that were previously identified
as the best adsorbent candidates among several thousands of MOFs was
examined. Molecular simulations were used to compute selectivity,
working capacity, regenerability, and adsorbent performance score
(APS) of MOFs considering separation of binary CO2/CH4, CO2/N2, and ternary CO2/CH4/H2O and CO2/N2/H2O mixtures. The results showed that introduction of H2O as the third component into binary CO2/CH4 and CO2/N2 mixtures significantly affected
the adsorbent evaluation metrics of MOFs that have strong affinity
toward H2O because of the presence of specific functional
groups and/or extra framework anions in the framework. Remarkable
increases in CO2/N2 selectivities of MOFs were
observed in the presence of H2O. On the other hand, simulations
performed using MOFs that are preloaded with H2O to mimic
the exposure of MOFs to humidity prior to gas adsorption revealed
drastic decreases in CO2 working capacities and APSs of
MOFs both for CO2/CH4 and CO2/N2 separations. These results will be useful for the design
and development of efficient MOF adsorbents for CO2 capture
under humid conditions.

Abstract
Measuring parameters related to gas adsorption on the effective surfaces of solid samples is important in catalyst studies. Further attention on the subject has appeared due to the materials and methods required to concentrate the gaseous biomarkers for detection. The conventional methods are mainly based on the volumetric and gravimetric analyses, which are applicable to bulk samples. No standard method has yet been provided for such measurements on thin films, which are the most commonly used samples for material screening. Here, a novel method is presented for the adsorption coefficient measurement on thin-film samples. This method comprises coating of the inner walls of a microfluidic channel with the thin film under test. The recorded diffusion rates for a trace gas along this microchannel are compared with the solutions of the adsorption-diffusion equation of the channel for determining the adsorption coefficient of the gas molecule to the inner walls of the channel. The high ratio of surface-to-volume in such channels magnifies the gas sorption effects and improves accuracy. The method is fast, versatile, and cost-effective, allowing measurements at different temperatures and atmospheric pressures. The adsorption coefficients of different isomers of butanol on poly(methyl methacrylate) sheets, zinc oxide thick films, and gold thin films are determined as examples.

Abstract
Molecular simulation of adsorption in nanoporous materials has become a valuable complement to experimental studies of these materials. In almost all cases, these simulations treat the adsorbing material as rigid. We use molecular simulations to examine the validity of this approximation for the adsorption in metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) that have framework flexibility without change in their unit cells because of thermal vibrations. All nanoporous materials are subject to this kind of framework flexibility. We examine the adsorption of nine molecules (CO2, CH4, ethane, ethene, propane, propene, butane, Xe, and Kr) and four molecular mixtures (CO2/CH4, ethane/ethene, propane/propene/butane, and Xe/Kr) in 100 MOFs at dilute and nondilute adsorption conditions. Our results show that single-component adsorption uptakes at nondilute conditions are only weakly affected by framework flexibility, but adsorption selectivities at both dilute and nondilute conditions can be significantly affected by flexibility. The most dramatic impacts of framework flexibility occur for adsorption uptake in the limit of dilute adsorption. These results suggest that the importance of including framework flexibility when attempting to make quantitative predictions of adsorption selectivity in MOFs and similar materials may have been underestimated in the past.

Abstract
Polymeric membranes have been widely employed for water purification applications. However, the trade-off issue between the selectivity and permeability has limited its use in various applications. Mixed matrix membranes (MMMs) were introduced to overcome this limitation and to enhance the properties and performance of polymeric membranes by incorporation of fillers such as silica and zeolites. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are a new class of hybrid inorganic-organic materials that are introduced as novel fillers for incorporation in polymeric matrix to form composite membranes for different applications especially water desalination. A major advantage of MOFs over other inorganic fillers is the possibility of preparing different structures with different pore sizes and functionalities, which are designed especially for a targeted application. Different MMMs fabrication techniques have also been investigated to fabricate MMMs with pronounced properties for a specific application. Synthesis techniques include blending, layer-by-layer (LBL), gelatin-assisted seed growth and in situ growth that proved to give the most homogenous dispersion of MOFs within the organic matrix. It was found that the ideal filler loading of MOFs in different polymeric matrices is 10%, increasing the filler loading beyond this value led to formation of aggregates that significantly decreased the MOFs-MMMs performance. Despite the many merits of MOFs-MMMs, the main challenge facing the upscaling and wide commercial application of MOFs-MMMs is the difficult synthesis conditions of the MOFs itself and the stability and sustainability of MOFs-MMMs performance. Investigation of new MOFs and MOFs-MMMs synthesis techniques should be carried out for further industrial applications. Among these new synthesis methods, green MOFs synthesis has been highlighted as low cost, renewable, environmentally friendly and recyclable starting materials for MOFs-MMMs. This paper will focus on the investigation of the effect of different recently introduced MOFs on the performance of MOFs-MMMs in water purification applications.

Abstract
Several thousands of metal organic frameworks (MOFs) have been reported to date, but the information on H2/N2 separation performances of MOF membranes is currently very limited in the literature. We report the first large-scale computational screening study that combines state-of-the-art molecular simulations, grand canonical Monte Carlo (GCMC) and molecular dynamics (MD), to predict H2 permeability and H2/N2 selectivity of 3765 different types of MOF membranes. Results showed that MOF membranes offer very high H2 permeabilities, 2.5 × 103 to 1.7 × 106 Barrer, and moderate H2/N2 membrane selectivities up to 7. The top 20 MOF membranes that exceed the polymeric membranes' upper bound for H2/N2 separation were identified based on the results of initial screening performed at infinite dilution condition. Molecular simulations were then carried out considering binary H2/N2 and quaternary H2/N2/CO2/CO mixtures to evaluate the separation performance of MOF membranes under industrial operating conditions. Lower H2 permeabilities and higher N2 permeabilities were obtained at binary mixture conditions compared to the ones obtained at infinite dilution due to the absence of multicomponent mixture effects in the latter. Structure-performance relations of MOFs were also explored to provide molecular-level insights into the development of new MOF membranes that can offer both high H2 permeability and high H2/N2 selectivity. Results showed that the most promising MOF membranes generally have large pore sizes (>6 Å) as well as high surface areas (>3500 m2/g) and high pore volumes (>1 cm3/g). We finally examined H2/N2 separation potentials of the mixed matrix membranes (MMMs) in which the best MOF materials identified from our high-throughput screening were used as fillers in various polymers. Results showed that incorporation of MOFs into polymers almost doubles H2 permeabilities and slightly enhances H2/N2 selectivities of polymer membranes, which can advance the current membrane technology for efficient H2 purification.

Abstract
The Monte Carlo and molecular dynamics simulations are employed to screen the separation performance of 6013 computation-ready, experimental metal⁻organic framework membranes (CoRE-MOFMs) for 15 binary gas mixtures. After the univariate analysis, principal component analysis is used to reduce 44 performance metrics of 15 mixtures to a 10-dimension set. Then, four machine learning algorithms (decision tree, random forest, support vector machine, and back propagation neural network) are combined with k times repeated k-fold cross-validation to predict and analyze the relationships between six structural feature descriptors and 10 principal components. Based on the linear correlation value R and the root mean square error predicted by the machine learning algorithm, the random forest algorithm is the most suitable for the prediction of the separation performance of CoRE-MOFMs. One descriptor, pore limiting diameter, possesses the highest weight importance for each principal component index. Finally, the 30 best CoRE-MOFMs for each binary gas mixture are screened out. The high-throughput computational screening and the microanalysis of high-dimensional performance metrics can provide guidance for experimental research through the relationships between the multi-structure variables and multi-performance variables.

Abstract
Efficient separation of CO2 from CO2/CH4 mixtures using membranes has economic, environmental and industrial importance. Membrane technologies are currently dominated by polymers due to their processing abilities and low manufacturing costs. However, polymeric membranes suffer from either low gas permeabilities or low selectivities. Metal organic frameworks (MOFs) are suggested as potential membrane candidates that offer both high selectivity and permeability for CO2/CH4 separation. Experimental testing of every single synthesized MOF material as membranes is not practical due to the availability of thousands of different MOF materials. A multilevel, high-throughput computational screening methodology was used to examine the MOF database for membrane-based CO2/CH4 separation. MOF membranes offering the best combination of CO2 permeability (>106 Barrer) and CO2/CH4 selectivity (>80) were identified by combining grand canonical Monte Carlo and molecular dynamics simulations. Results revealed that the best MOF membranes are located above the Robeson's upper bound indicating that they outperform polymeric membranes for CO2/CH4 separation. The impact of framework flexibility on the membrane properties of the selected top MOFs was studied by comparing the results of rigid and flexible molecular simulations. Relations between structures and performances of MOFs were also investigated to provide atomic-level insights into the design of novel MOFs which will be useful for CO2/CH4 separation processes. We also predicted permeabilities and selectivities of the mixed matrix membranes (MMM) in which the best MOF candidates are incorporated as filler particles into polymers and found that MOF-based MMMs have significantly higher CO2 permeabilities and moderately higher selectivities than pure polymers.
