Abstract
The sp3 C-H alkylation of 9H-fluorene using alcohol and a Ru catalyst via the borrowing hydrogen concept has been described. This reaction was catalyzed by the [Ru(p-cymene)Cl2]2 complex (3 mol %) and exhibited a broad reaction scope with different alcohols, allowing primary and secondary alcohols to be employed as nonhazardous and greener alkylating agents with the formation of environmentally benign water as a byproduct. A variety of 9H-fluorene underwent selective and exclusive mono-C9-alkylation with primary alcohols in good to excellent isolated yield (26 examples, 50-92% yield), whereas this reaction with secondary alcohols in the absence of any external oxidants furnished the tetrasubstituted alkene as the major product. Furthermore, a base-mediated C-H hydroxylation of the synthesized 9H-fluorene derivatives afforded 9H-hydroxy-functionalized quaternary fluorene derivatives in excellent yield.

Abstract
We present an economical catalytic procedure to convert readily available 1,2-diaminobenzenes and terminal epoxides into valuable 1,2,3,4-tetrahydroquinoxalines in a highly enantioselective fashion. This procedure operates through relay zinc and iridium catalysis, and achieves redox-neutral and stereoconvergent production of valuable chiral heterocycles from racemic starting materials with water as the only side product. The use of commercially available reagents and catalysts and a convenient procedure also make this catalytic method attractive for practical application.

Abstract
Nanolayered cobalt-molybdenum sulphide (Co-Mo-S) materials have been established as excellent catalysts for C-S bond construction. These catalysts allow for the preparation of a broad range of thioethers in good to excellent yields from structurally diverse thiols and readily available primary as well as secondary alcohols. Chemoselectivity in the presence of sensitive groups such as double bonds, nitriles, carboxylic esters and halogens has been demonstrated. It is also shown that the reaction takes place through a hydrogen-autotransfer (borrowing hydrogen) mechanism that involves Co-Mo-S-mediated dehydrogenation and hydrogenation reactions. A novel catalytic protocol based on the thioetherification of alcohols with hydrogen sulphide (H2S) to furnish symmetrical thioethers has also been developed using these earth-abundant metal-based sulphide catalysts.

Switchable Access to Amines and Imines from Reductive Coupling of Nitroarenes with Alcohols Catalyzed by Biomass-Derived Cobalt Nanoparticles. Catalysts 2019. Abstract
Cobalt nanoparticles modified with N-doped hierarchical porous carbon derived from biomass are found to be a highly efficient, reusable heterogeneous catalyst for the coupling of nitroarenes with alcohols, selectively affording imines and amines via the borrowing hydrogen strategy for the first time. The product selectivity between imine and amine may be precisely tuned by simple alteration of the reaction conditions without changing the catalyst in one reaction system. In this study, a broad set of complex imines and amines was successfully synthesized in good to high yields with various functional groups tolerated for both nitroarenes and alcohols, highlighting the potentially practical utility of the protocol. This heterogeneous catalyst can be easily removed from the reaction medium by external magnet and can be reused at least four times without significant loss in activity and selectivity.

Ma L, Yan L, Lu AH, Ding Y. Effect of Re promoter on the structure and catalytic performance of Ni–Re/Al2O3 catalysts for the reductive amination of monoethanolamine. RSC Adv 2018; 8:8152-8163. Abstract
In this paper, Ni/Al2O3 catalysts (15 wt% Ni) with different Re loadings were prepared to investigate the effect of Re on the structure and catalytic performance of Ni–Re/Al2O3 catalysts for the reductive amination of monoethanolamine. Reaction results reveal that the conversion and ethylenediamine selectivity increase significantly with increasing Re loading up to 2 wt%. Ni–Re/Al2O3 catalysts show excellent stability during the reductive amination reaction. The characterization of XRD, DR UV-Vis spectroscopy, H2-TPR, and acidity–basicity measurements indicates that addition of Re improves the Ni dispersion, proportion of octahedral Ni2+ species, reducibility, and acid strength for Ni–Re/Al2O3 catalysts. The Ni15 and Ni15–Re2 catalysts were chosen for in-depth study. The results from SEM-BSE, TEM, and CO-TPD indicate that smaller Ni0 particle size and higher Ni0 surface area are obtained in the reduced Ni–Re/Al2O3 catalysts. Results from in situ XPS and STEM-EDX line scan suggest that Re species show a mixture of various valances and have a tendency to aggregate on the surface of Ni0 particles. During reaction, the Ni0 particles on the Al2O3 support are stabilized and the sintering process is effectively suppressed by the incorporation of Re. It could be concluded that sufficient Ni0 sites, the collaborative effect of Ni–Re, and brilliant stability contribute to the excellent catalytic performance of Ni–Re/Al2O3 catalysts for the reductive amination of monoethanolamine. Re promoters improve the catalyst performance and stability of Ni–Re/Al2O3 catalysts for the reductive amination of monoethanolamine.![]()

Abstract
The rearrangement of allylic trichloroacetimidates is a well-known transformation, but the corresponding rearrangement of benzylic trichloroacetimidates has not been explored as a method for the synthesis of benzylic amines. Conditions that provide the trichloroacetamide product from a benzylic trichloroacetimidate in high yield have been developed. Methods were also investigated to transform the trichloroacetamide product directly into the corresponding amine, carbamate, and urea. A cationic mechanism for the rearrangement is implicated by the available data.

Abstract
The use of γ-Al2O3 as a heterogeneous catalyst in scCO2 has been successfully applied to the amination of alcohols for the synthesis of N-alkylated heterocycles. The optimal reaction conditions (temperature and substrate flow rate) were determined using an automated self-optimising reactor, resulting in moderate to high yields of the target products. Carrying out the reaction in scCO2 was shown to be beneficial, as higher yields were obtained in the presence of CO2 than in its absence. A surprising discovery is that, in addition to cyclic amines, cyclic ureas and urethanes could be synthesised by incorporation of CO2 from the supercritical solvent into the product.

Abstract
A hydrogen borrowing reaction employing secondary alcohols and Ph* (Me5C6) ketones to give β-branched carbonyl products is described (21 examples). This new C-C bond forming process requires low loadings of [Cp*IrCl2]2, relatively low temperatures, and up to 2.0 equiv of the secondary alcohol. Substrate-induced diastereoselectivity was observed, and this represents the first example of a diastereoselective enolate hydrogen borrowing alkylation. By utilizing the Ph* group, the β-branched products could be straightforwardly cleaved to the corresponding esters or amides using a retro-Friedel-Crafts reaction. Finally, this protocol was applied to the synthesis of fragrance compound (±)-3-methyl-5-phenylpentanol.
