Abstract
An unprecedented and challenging defluorinative carbonylation was achieved. Enabled by a Pd/Cu cooperative catalyst system, the first example of defluorinative carbonylative coupling has been established. With gem-difluoroalkenes and aryl iodides as the substrates, this methodology offers flexible and facile access to privileged α-fluorochalcones under mild reaction conditions in moderate-to-excellent yields. Mechanistic studies indicated transmetalation between palladium and copper intermediates as a crucial step of the catalytic cycle.

Abstract
Density functional theory calculations have been performed to reveal the chemoselectivity of Rh-catalyzed chiral C-F cleavage and γ-site functionalization. We found that the chemoselectivity is controlled by β-F elimination in methanol solvent, leading to formation of the alkynylic product. In isobutyronitrile solvent, the chemoselectivity is controlled by the allene insertion step, where the fluoroalkenylic product can be observed. The difference can be explained by analysis of the explicit solvent models.

2,2-difluorovinyl benzoates for diverse synthesis of gem-difluoroenol ethers by Ni-catalyzed cross-coupling reactions. Nat Commun 2021; 12:412. Abstract
gem-Difluoroalkene is a bioisostere of carbonyl group for improving bioavailability of drug candidates. Herein we develop structurally diverse 2,2-difluorovinyl benzoates (BzO-DFs) as versatile building blocks for modular synthesis of gem-difluoroenol ethers (44 examples) and gem-difluoroalkenes (2 examples) by Ni-catalyzed cross coupling reactions. Diverse BzO-DFs derivatives bearing sensitive functional groups (e.g., C = C, TMS, strained carbocycles) are readily prepared from their bromodifluoroacetates and bromodifluoroketones precursors using metallic zinc as reductant. With Ni(COD)2 and dppf [1,1'-bis(diphenylphosphino)ferrocene] as catalyst, reactions of BzO-DFs with arylboronic acids and arylmagnesium/alkylzinc reagents afforded the desired gem-difluoroenol ethers and gem-difluoroalkenes in good yields. The Ni-catalyzed coupling reactions features highly regioselective C(vinyl)-O(benzoate) bond activation of the BzO-DFs. Results from control experiments and DFT calculations are consistent with a mechanism involving initial oxidative addition of the BzO-DFs by the Ni(0) complex. By virtue of diversity of the BzO-DFs and excellent functional group tolerance, this method is amenable to late-stage functionalization of multifunctionalized bioactive molecules.

Abstract
A novel strategy enabled cleavage of two C(sp3)-F bonds in a CF3 group is reported. Triggered by ipso-defluorinative amination, this 1,3-diamination of (trifluoromethyl)alkenes with indoles, carbazoles, pyrroles, and sulfonamides gave acyclic 1,3-diamine products bearing a monofluoroalkene moiety in high yields with good to excellent Z/E selectivities. Preliminary mechanistic studies enable the isolation of the reaction intermediate and indicate that a unique sequential ipso-/γ-selective defluorinative amination pathway is involved in this transformation.

Abstract
Herein, we report unprecedented aluminum-catalyzed halodefluorination reactions of trifluoromethyl- and difluoroalkyl-substituted olefins with bromo- or chlorotrimethylsilane. The interesting feature of these reactions is that one, two, or three fluorine atoms can be selectively replaced with bromine or chlorine atoms by modification of the reaction conditions. The generated products can undergo a variety of subsequent transformations, thus constituting a valuable stock of building blocks for installing fluorine-containing olefin motifs in other molecules. Aluminum-catalyzed halodefluorination reactions of fluoroalkyl-substituted olefins are developed. The reactions can selectively deliver mono-, di-, or trisubstituted products.![]()

Abstract
The unprecedented synthesis of gem-difluoroalkenes through the Ramberg-Bäcklund reaction of alkyl triflones is described herein. Structurally diverse, fully substituted gem-difluoroalkenes that are difficult to prepare by other methods can be easily prepared from readily available triflones by treatment with specific Grignard reagents. Experimental and computational studies provide insight into the unique and critical role of the Grignard reagent, which serves both as a base to remove the α-proton and as a Lewis acid to assist C-F bond activation.

Abstract
The combination of photoredox catalysis with the Wolff-Kishner (WK) reaction allows the difunctionalization of carbonyl groups by a radical-carbanion relay sequence (photo-Wolff-Kishner reaction). Photoredox initiated radical addition to N-sulfonylhydrazones yields α-functionalized carbanions following the WK-type mechanism. With sulfur-centered radicals, the carbanions are further functionalized by reaction with electrophiles including CO2 and aldehydes, whereas CF3 radical addition furnishes a wide range of gem-difluoroalkenes through β-fluoride elimination of the generated α-CF3 carbanions. More than 80 substrate examples demonstrate the broad applicability of this reaction sequence. A series of investigations including radical inhibition, deuterium labeling, fluorescence quenching, cyclic voltammetry, and control experiments support the proposed radical-carbanion relay mechanism.

Abstract
The hydrodefluorination of CF3-substituted alkenes can be catalyzed by a nickel(II) hydride bearing a pincer ligand. The catalyst loading can be as low as 1 mol%. gem-Difluoroalkenes containing a number of functional groups can be formed in good to excellent yields by a radical mechanism initiated by H• transfer from the nickel hydride. The relative reactivity of various substrates supports the proposed mechanism, as does a TEMPO trapping experiment.

Abstract
We report herein a facile synthetic method for converting unactivated (hetero)aryl electrophiles into β-fluoroethylated (hetero)arenes via nickel-catalyzed reductive cross-couplings. This coupling reaction features the involvement of FCH2 CH2 radical intermediate rather than β-fluoroethyl manganese species which provides effective solutions to the problematic β-fluoride side eliminations. The practical value of this protocol is further demonstrated by the late-stage modification of several complex ArCl or ArOH-derived bioactive molecules.

Abstract
Hydrofunctionalization of trifluoromethyl alkenes is highly challenging, because the nucleophilic addition is oftentimes followed by β-F elimination in this case. By the use of tetrabutylammonium decatungstate (TBADT) as a hydrogen-atom-transfer (HAT) photocatalyst for acyl C-H activation, we successfully avoid the β-F elimination in the hydroacylation of trifluoromethyl alkenes with aldehydes. This light (390 nm) promoted reaction provides a facile and efficient access to various β-CF3 ketones in complete regiocontrol with high functionality tolerance and 100% atom economy.

Abstract
We report a general and efficient approach to construct achiral and chiral gem-difluoroallylic amines from a masked difluorodiazo reagent (PhSO2CF2CHN2) and readily available imines. This facile protocol takes advantage of the phenylsulfonyl and diazo moieties as efficient activating and directing groups to assist difluoroalkyl incorporation and facilitate the chemodivergent and stereoselective formation of gem-difluoroallylic amines.

Abstract
A general photocatalytic reductive strategy for the construction of unsymmetrical α-tertiary dialkyl ethers is reported. By merging Lewis acid-mediated ketal activation and visible-light photocatalytic reduction, in situ-generated α-alkoxy radicals were found to engage in addition reactions with a variety of olefinic partners. Good reaction efficiency is demonstrated with a range of ketals of aromatic and aliphatic ketones. Extension to acetal substrates is also described, demonstrating the overall synthetic utility of this methodology for complex ether synthesis.

Abstract
The oxidative addition of a range of robust aryl C–F bonds to a single Al(I) center supported by a (NacNac)− bidentate ligand ((NacNac)− = [ArNC(Me)CHC(Me)NAr]− and Ar = 2,6–Pr2iC6H3) have been explored by density functional theory calculations. Our calculations demonstrate that the Al(I) center-mediated C–F insertion generally proceeds via the concerted mechanism that involve both the donation (nAl→σC-F*) and back-donation (σF(p)→πAl(p)*) interactions. In addition, the predicted free energy barriers for the C–F bond activation show good agreement with the experimental information available. Finally, the comparative studies show that B(I) is the most active among group III metals (B, Al, Ga), thus supplying a testable prediction for experiments.

Abstract
Defluorinative C(sp3 )-P bond formation of α-trifluoromethyl alkenes with phosphine oxides or phosphonates have been achieved under catalyst- and oxidant-free conditions, giving phosphorylation gem-difluoroalkenes as products. α-Trifluoromethyl alkenes bearing various of aryl substituents such as halogen, cyano, ester and heterocyclic groups are available in this transformation. The results of control experiments demonstrated that the mechanism of dehydrogenative/defluorinative cross-coupling reactions was not a radical route, but might be an SN 2' process involving phosphine oxide anion.

Abstract
Literature methods to access gem-difluoroalkenes are largely limited to harsh, organometallic-based methods, and known photoredox-mediated processes are not amenable to aryl radical addition to trifluoromethyl alkenes. A metal-free, functional group-tolerant method for the preparation of benzylic gem-difluoroalkenes is described. Halogen atom abstraction from (hetero)aryl halides generates aryl radicals that undergo a defluorinative arylation of α-trifluoromethyl alkenes, tolerating electronically disparate aryl radicals and α-trifluoromethyl alkenes.

Abstract
We report herein the exploitment of the partially fluorinated trifluoroethyl as precatalyst ligands in nickel-catalyzed Suzuki-type alkylation and fluoroalkylation coupling reactions. Compared with the [L n NiII(aryl)(X)] precatalysts, the unique characters of bis-trifluoroethyl ligands imparted precatalyst [(bipy)Ni(CH2CF3)2] with bench-top stability, good solubilities in organic media and interesting catalytic activities. Preliminary mechanistic studies reveal that an eliminative extrusion of a vinylidene difluoride (VDF, CH2[double bond, length as m-dash]CF2) mask from [(bipy)Ni(CH2CF3)2] is a critical step for the initiation of a catalytic reaction.
