Origin of the Difference in Reactivity between Ir Catalysts for the Borylation of C-H Bonds

A mechanistic study on the origin of the difference in reactivity between Ir catalysts for C-H borylation reactions is reported. Catalytic reactions of B₂pin₂ with a series of substrates that require high temperatures and long reaction times were conducted. These reactions catalyzed by the combination of [Ir(COD)(OMe)]₂ and 3,4,7,8-tetramethylphenanthroline (tmphen) occur in yields that are substantially higher than those of reactions catalyzed by [Ir(COD)(OMe)]₂ and 4,4'-di-tert-butylbipyridine (dtbpy). The electronic properties of Ir catalysts ligated by dtbpy or tmphen and their stoichiometric reactivity were investigated. It was found that a longer lifetime rather than higher reactivity of the catalyst leads to higher yields of reactions catalyzed by Ir-tmphen. The catalyst ligated by dtbpy decomposes principally by dissociation of the ligand and rapid borylation at the positions alpha to nitrogen. Thus, the greater stability of the catalyst containing tmphen results from its greater binding constant.

Ultrafast photoactivation of C─H bonds inside water-soluble nanocages

Light energy absorbed by molecules can be harnessed to activate chemical bonds with extraordinary speed. However, excitation energy redistribution within various molecular degrees of freedom prohibits bond-selective chemistry. Inspired by enzymes, we devised a new photocatalytic scheme that preorganizes and polarizes target chemical bonds inside water-soluble cationic nanocavities to engineer selective functionalization. Specifically, we present a route to photoactivate weakly polarized sp3 C─H bonds in water via host-guest charge transfer and control its reactivity with aerial O2. Electron-rich aromatic hydrocarbons self-organize inside redox complementary supramolecular cavities to form photoactivatable host-guest charge transfer complexes in water. An ultrafast C─H bond cleavage within ~10 to 400 ps is triggered by visible-light excitation, through a cage-assisted and solvent water-assisted proton-coupled electron transfer reaction. The confinement prolongs the lifetime of the carbon-centered radical to enable a facile yet selective reaction with molecular O2 leading to photocatalytic turnover of oxidized products in water.

Square-planar Co(iii) in {O4} coordination: large ZFS and reactivity with ROS

Ligand and solvent control of selectivity in the C-H activation of a pyridylimine-substituted 1-naphthalene; a combined synthetic and computational study

The pyridylimine-substituted 1-naphthalenes, 2-(1-C10H7)-6-{CR[double bond, length as m-dash]N(2,6-i-Pr2C6H3)}C5H3N (R = Me HLMe, H HLH), react with Na2[PdCl4] in acetic acid at elevated temperature to afford either ortho-C-Hnaphthyl activated (LMe)PdCl (2ortho) or the unactivated adduct (HLH)PdCl2 (1b). Alternatively, 1b and its ketimine analogue (HLMe)PdCl2 (1a), can be prepared by treating (MeCN)2PdCl2 with either HLMe or HLH in chloroform at room temperature. Regio-selective ortho-C-H activation to form 2ortho can also be initiated by the thermolysis of 1a in acetic acid, while no reaction occurs under similar conditions with 1b. Interestingly, the C-H activation of HLMe to give 2ortho is found to be reversible with 100% deuteration of the peri-site occurring on reacting Na2[PdCl4] with HLMe in acetic acid-d4. By contrast, heating 1a in toluene gives a 55 : 45 mixture of 2ortho and its peri-activated isomer 2peri. Pure 2peri can, however, be obtained either from (LMe)PdOAc (3peri) by OAc/Cl exchange or by the sequential reactions of 1a with firstly silver acetate then with aqueous sodium chloride. Intriguingly, a peri to ortho interconversion occurs on heating 2peri in acetic acid to give 2ortho. DFT calculations have been used to investigate the C-H activation steps and it is found that in acetic acid ortho-C-H activation is kinetically and thermodynamically favoured but peri-CH activation is kinetically accessible (ΔΔG‡ = 2.4 kcal mol-1). By contrast in toluene, the reaction appears to be irreversible with the difference in barrier height for ortho- and peri-C-H activation being very small within the error of the method (ΔΔG‡ = 0.7 kcal mol-1), findings that are in agreement with the empirically observed product distribution for 2ortho and 2peri. Single crystal X-ray structures are reported for 1a, 1b, 2ortho and 2peri.

[Ru(tpy)(pyalk)Cl]Cl (pyalk = 2-(2'-pyridyl)-2-propanol) was synthesized and characterized crystallographically and electrochemically. Upon dissolution in water and acetonitrile, [Ru(tpy)(pyalk)Cl]Cl was found to form [Ru(tpy)(pyalk)Cl]+ and [Ru(tpy)(pyalk)(OH)]+, respectively. The Ru(ii/iii) couple of [Ru(tpy)(pyalk)Cl]+ was found to be relatively low compared to that of other Ru complexes in acetonitrile, but the Ru(iii/iv) couple was not significantly different than other Ru complexes bearing anionic ligands. Pourbaix diagrams were generated for [Ru(tpy)(phpy)(OH2)]+ (phpy = 2-phenylpyridine) and [Ru(tpy)(pyalk)(OH)]+ in water, and it was found that [Ru(tpy)(pyalk)(OH)]+ has a lower Ru(ii/iii) potential than [Ru(tpy)(phpy)(OH2)]+ under neutral to alkaline pH. [Ru(tpy)(pyalk)(OH)]+ was found to catalyze C-H bond hydroxylation of secondary alkanes and epoxidation of alkenes using cerium(iv) ammonium nitrate as the primary oxidant.

Designing Homogeneous Bromine Redox Catalysis for Selective Aliphatic C-H Bond Functionalization

The potential of homogeneous oxidation catalysis employing bromine has remained largely unexplored. We herein show that the combination of a tetraalkylammonium bromide and meta-chloroperbenzoic acid offers a unique catalyst system for the convenient and selective oxidation of saturated C(sp³ )-H bonds upon photochemical initiation with day light. This approach enables remote, intramolecular, position-selective C-H amination as demonstrated for 20 different examples. For the first time, an N-halogenated intermediate was isolated as the active catalyst state in a catalytic Hofmann-Löffler reaction. In addition, an expeditious one-pot synthesis of N-sulfonyl oxaziridines from N-sulfonamides was developed and exemplified for 15 transformations. These pioneering examples provide a change in paradigm for molecular catalysis with bromine.

How to tame a palladium terminal oxo

The isolation of terminal oxo complexes of the late transition metals promises new avenues in oxidation catalysis like the selective and catalytic hydroxylation of unreactive CH bonds, the activation of water, or the upgrading of olefins. While terminal oxo ligands are ubiquitous for early transition metals, well-characterized examples with group 10 metals remain hitherto elusive. In search for palladium terminal oxo complexes, the relative stability/reactivity of such compounds are evaluated computationally (CASSCF/NEVPT2; DFT). The calculations investigate only well-known ligand systems with established synthetic procedures and relevance for coordination chemistry and homogeneous catalysis. They delineate and quantify, which electronic properties of ancillary ligands are crucial for taming otherwise highly reactive terminal oxo intermediates. Notably, carbene ligands with both strong σ-donor and strong π-acceptor properties are best suited for the stabilization of palladium(ii) terminal oxo complexes, whereas ligands with a weaker ligand field lead to highly reactive complexes. Strongly donating ligands are an excellent choice for high-valent palladium(iv) terminal oxo compounds. Low coordinate palladium(ii) as well as high-valent palladium(iv) complexes are best suited for the activation of strong bonds.

Ag1 Pd1 Nanoparticles-Reduced Graphene Oxide as a Highly Efficient and Recyclable Catalyst for Direct Aryl C-H Olefination

The efficient and selective palladium-catalyzed activation of C-H bonds is of great importance for the construction of diverse bioactive molecules. Despite significant progress, the inability to recycle palladium catalysts and the need for additives impedes the practical applications of these reactions. Ag₁ Pd₁ nanoparticles-reduced graphene oxide (Ag₁ Pd₁ -rGO) was used as highly efficient and recyclable catalyst for the chelation-assisted ortho C-H bond olefination of amides with acrylates in good yields with a broad substrate scope. The catalyst can be recovered and reused at least 5 times without losing activity. A synergistic effect between the Ag and Pd atoms on the catalytic activity was found, and a plausible mechanism for the AgPd-rGO catalyzed C-H olefination is proposed. These findings suggest that the search for such Pd-based bimetallic alloy nanoparticles is a new method towards the development of superior recyclable catalysts for direct aryl C-H functionalization under mild conditions.

Inverting Steric Effects: Using "Attractive" Noncovalent Interactions To Direct Silver-Catalyzed Nitrene Transfer

Nitrene transfer (NT) reactions represent powerful and direct methods to convert C-H bonds into amine groups that are prevalent in many commodity chemicals and pharmaceuticals. The importance of the C-N bond has stimulated the development of numerous transition-metal complexes to effect chemo-, regio-, and diastereoselective NT. An ongoing challenge is to understand how subtle interactions between catalyst and substrate influence the site-selectivity of the C-H amination event. In this work, we explore the underlying reasons why Ag(tpa)OTf (tpa = tris(pyridylmethyl)amine) prefers to activate α-conjugated C-H bonds over 3° alkyl C(sp3)-H bonds and apply these insights to reaction optimization and catalyst design. Experimental results suggest possible roles of noncovalent interactions (NCIs) in directing the NT; computational studies support the involvement of π···π and Ag···π interactions between catalyst and substrate, primarily by lowering the energy of the directed transition state and reaction conformers. A simple Hess's law relationship can be employed to predict selectivities for new substrates containing competing NCIs. The insights presented herein are poised to inspire the design of other catalyst-controlled C-H functionalization reactions.

Iridium-Catalyzed Formyl-Selective Deuteration of Aldehydes

We report the first direct catalytic method for formyl-selective deuterium labeling of aromatic aldehydes under mild conditions, using an iridium-based catalyst designed to favor formyl over aromatic C-H activation. A good range of aromatic aldehydes is selectively labeled, and a one-pot labeling/olefination method is also described. Computational studies support kinetic product control over competing aromatic labeling and decarbonylation pathways.

Methods Utilizing First-Row Transition Metals in Natural Product Total Synthesis

First-row transition-metal-mediated reactions constitute an important and growing area of research due to the low cost, low toxicity, and exceptional synthetic versatility of these metals. Currently, there is considerable effort to replace existing precious-metal-catalyzed reactions with first-row analogs. More importantly, there are a plethora of unique transformations mediated by first-row metals, which have no classical second- or third-row counterpart. Herein, the application of first-row metal-mediated methods to the total synthesis of natural products is discussed. This Review is intended to highlight strategic uses of these metals to realize efficient syntheses and highlight the future potential of these reagents and catalysts in organic synthesis.

Electronic Control on Linear versus Branched Alkylation of 2-/3-Aroylbenzofurans with Acrylates: Combined DFT and Synthetic Studies

Investigations on the factors that govern unusual branched alkylation of 2-aroylbenzofurans with acrylates by Ru-catalyzed carbonyl-directed C-H activation has been carried out by calculating the kinetics associated with the two key steps-the coordination of the acrylate with the intermediate ruthenacycle and the subsequent migratory insertion reaction-studied with the help of DFT calculations. Eight possible orientations for each mode of alkylation have been considered for the calculations. From these calculations, it has been understood that there is a synergistic operation of the steric and electronic effects favoring the branched alkylation. Further DFT investigations on the alkylation of the isomeric 3-aroylbenzofurans indicated a preference for the linear alkylation and this has been verified experimentally. Overall, the observed/calculated complementary selectivity in the alkylation of 2-/3-aroylbenzofurans with acrylates reveals that the substrate-dependent charge distribution of the Ru-C bond in the intermediate ruthenacycle is an important determining factor and thus the current work opens up a new domain of substrate design for controlling regioselectivity.

Selective C-C coupling at a Pt(iv) centre: 100% preference for sp2-sp3 over sp3-sp3

The oxidative addition of three different organic halides RX to the non-symmetric platinum(ii) mer coordinated dicyclometallated C^N^C complex 1 yielded short-lived six-coordinate platinum(iv) complexes 2(R) (R = Me, allyl, Bn), with the incoming groups trans across the platinum centre. A spontaneous reductive coupling reaction then occurred with, in each case, a completely chemoselective sp²-sp³ coupling, and exclusively gave R-3, with the newly introduced R group bonded to the previously cyclometallated aryl ring. Following a recyclometallation reaction, the oxidative addition/reductive elimination cycle was repeated and gave the same selectivity. A one-pot route to doubly alkylating the aryl ring was developed. The observed selectivity might have been predicted on the normal basis of a steric barrier associated with non-flat sp³ hybridised groups, but we suggest that it arises from the stereochemistry at the metal, and the orientation of the ligands.

The Essential Role of Bond Energetics in C-H Activation/Functionalization

The most fundamental concepts in chemistry are structure, energetics, reactivity and their inter-relationships, which are indispensable for promoting chemistry into a rational science. In this regard, bond energy, the intrinsic determinant directly related to structure and reactivity, should be most essential in serving as a quantitative basis for the design and understanding of organic transformations. Although C-H activation/functionalization have drawn tremendous research attention and flourished during the past decades, understanding the governing rules of bond energetics in these processes is still fragmentary and seems applicable only to limited cases, such as metal-oxo-mediated hydrogen atom abstraction. Despite the complexity of C-H activation/functionalization and the difficulties in measuring bond energies both for the substrates and intermediates, this is definitely a very important issue that should be more generally contemplated. To this end, this review is rooted in the energetic aspects of C-H activation/functionalization, which were previously rarely discussed in detail. Starting with a concise but necessary introduction of various classical methods for measuring heterolytic and homolytic energies for C-H bonds, the present review provides examples that applied the concept and values of C-H bond energy in rationalizing the observations associated with reactivity and/or selectivity in C-H activation/functionalization.

Phenanthroline-based metal–organic frameworks for Fe-catalyzed Csp3–H amination

We report here the synthesis of a robust and highly porous Fe-phenanthroline-based metal–organic framework (MOF) and its application in catalyzing challenging inter- and intramolecular C–H amination reactions. For the intermolecular amination reactions, a FeBr₂-metalated MOF selectively functionalized secondary benzylic and allylic C–H bonds. The intramolecular amination reactions utilizing organic azides as the nitrene source required the reduction of the FeBr₂-metalated MOF with NaBHEt₃ to generate the active catalyst. For both reactions, Fe or Zr leaching was less than 0.1%, and MOFs could be recycled and reused with no loss in catalytic activity. Furthermore, MOF catalysts were significantly more active than the corresponding homogeneous analogs. This work demonstrates the great potential of MOFs in generating highly active, recyclable, and reusable earth abundant metal catalysts for challenging organic transformations.
