Mapping Vibronic Couplings in a Solar Cell Dye with Polarization-Selective Two-Dimensional Electronic-Vibrational Spectroscopy

This study uses polarization-selective two-dimensional electronic-vibrational (2D EV) spectroscopy to map intramolecular charge transfer in the well-known solar cell dye, [Ru(dcbpy)₂(NCS)₂]^4- (N3^4-), dissolved in water. A static snapshot of the vibronic couplings present in aqueous N3^4- is reported. At least three different initially excited singlet metal-to-ligand charge-transfer (MLCT) states are observed to be coupled to vibrational modes probed in the lowest energy triplet MLCT state, emphasizing the role of vibronic coupling in intersystem crossing. Angles between electronic and vibrational transition dipole moments are extracted from spectrally isolated 2D EV peaks and compared with calculations to develop a microscopic description for how vibrations participate with ¹MLCT states in charge transfer and intersystem crossing. These results suggest that ¹MLCT states with significant electron density in the electron-donating plane formed by the Ru-(NCS)₂ will participate strongly in charge transfer through these vibronically coupled degrees of freedom.

Monitoring Ultrafast Spin Crossover Intermediates in an Iron(II) Complex by Broad Band Stimulated X-ray Raman Spectroscopy

The photoinduced spin crossover dynamics of transition metal complexes is of fundamental scientific importance and is used for sensor device applications and solar energy harvesting. Current X-ray and optical spectroscopy experiments for [Fe^II(bpy)₃], an archetypal earth-abundant metal complex, show conflicting spin dynamics. We have simulated the broad band transient X-ray absorption and hybrid (broad + narrow band) X-ray stimulated Raman signals at the N and Fe K-edges of the key excited state intermediates involved in the spin crossover process of this complex. We find that these signals are much more sensitive to electron and spin populations than transition absorption and may be useful in the design of photovoltaic and artificial photosynthetic systems.

Ultrafast Photophysics of a Dinitrogen-Bridged Molybdenum Complex

Among the many metal-dinitrogen complexes synthesized, the end-on bridging (μ2, η1, η1-N2) coordination mode is notoriously unreactive for nitrogen fixation. This is principally due to the large activation energy for ground-state nitrogen-element bond formation and motivates exploration of the photoexcited reactivity of this coordination mode. To provide the foundation for this concept, the photophysics of a dinitrogen-bridged molybdenum complex was explored by ultrafast electronic spectroscopies. The complex absorbs light from the UV to near-IR, and the transitions are predominantly of metal-to-ligand charge transfer (MLCT) character. Five excitation wavelengths (440, 520, 610, 730, and 1150 nm) were employed to access MLCT bands, and the dynamics were probed between 430 and 1600 nm. Despite the large energy space occupied by electronic states (ca. 1.2 eV), the dynamics were independent of the excitation wavelength. In the proposed kinetic model, photoexcitation from a Mo-N═N-Mo centered ground state populates the π*-state delocalized over two terpyridine ligands. Due to a large terpyridine-terpyridine spatial separation, electronic localization occurs within 100 fs, augmented by symmetry breaking. The subsequent interplay of internal conversion and intersystem crossing (ISC) populates the lowest 3MLCT state in 2-3 ps. Decay to the ground state occurs either directly or via a thermally activated metal-centered (3MC) trap state having two time constants (10-15 ps, 23-26 ps [298 K]; 103 ps, 612 ps [77 K]). ISC between 1MLCT and 3MLCT involves migration of energized electron density from the terpyridine π* orbitals to the Mo-N═N-Mo core. Implication of the observed dynamics for the potential N-H bond forming reactivity are discussed.

Perspective: Opportunities for ultrafast science at SwissFEL

We present the main specifications of the newly constructed Swiss Free Electron Laser, SwissFEL, and explore its potential impact on ultrafast science. In light of recent achievements at current X-ray free electron lasers, we discuss the potential territory for new scientific breakthroughs offered by SwissFEL in Chemistry, Biology, and Materials Science, as well as nonlinear X-ray science.

X-ray spectroscopy on the active ion in laser crystals

The active ions in typical laser crystals were studied with Resonant Inelastic X-ray Scattering (RIXS) and Partial Fluorescence Yield X-ray Absorption (PFY-XAS) spectroscopies as solid state model systems for dilute active centers. We analyzed Ti³⁺ and Cr³⁺ in α-Al₂O₃:Ti³⁺ and LiCaAlF₆:Cr³⁺, respectively. The comparison of experimental data with semi-empirical multiplet calculations provides insights into the electronic structure and shows how measured crystal field energies are related across different spectroscopies.

Ligand manipulation of charge transfer excited state relaxation and spin crossover in [Fe(2,2'-bipyridine)2(CN)2]

We have used femtosecond resolution UV-visible and Kβ x-ray emission spectroscopy to characterize the electronic excited state dynamics of [Fe(bpy)2(CN)2], where bpy=2,2'-bipyridine, initiated by metal-to-ligand charge transfer (MLCT) excitation. The excited-state absorption in the transient UV-visible spectra, associated with the 2,2'-bipyridine radical anion, provides a robust marker for the MLCT excited state, while the transient Kβ x-ray emission spectra provide a clear measure of intermediate and high spin metal-centered excited states. From these measurements, we conclude that the MLCT state of [Fe(bpy)2(CN)2] undergoes ultrafast spin crossover to a metal-centered quintet excited state through a short lived metal-centered triplet transient species. These measurements of [Fe(bpy)2(CN)2] complement prior measurement performed on [Fe(bpy)3]2+ and [Fe(bpy)(CN)4]2- in dimethylsulfoxide solution and help complete the chemical series [Fe(bpy)N(CN)6-2N]2N-4, where N = 1-3. The measurements confirm that simple ligand modifications can significantly change the relaxation pathways and excited state lifetimes and support the further investigation of light harvesting and photocatalytic applications of 3d transition metal complexes.

Isolation of a metal-to-ligand charge-transfer (MLCT) state of a tris 1,4-diimine complex of iron in the solid state: X-ray crystal structure and EPR

Using 5,6-dihydro-5,6-epoxy-1,10-phenanthroline as the ligand L, the X-ray crystal structure of [FeL₃](ClO₄)₂·2H₂O is determined.

Femtosecond studies: observing transition states and other ultra-short-lived species

To celebrate 2015 as the 'International Year of Light', this article offers a short survey of the progress made since the award of the Nobel Prize of 1999 to Professor Ahmed Zewail for his pioneering work on taking the timescale for observation of light-induced events down to the femtosecond level. Developments have included the extension of studies (i) to larger molecules, leading up to biological systems; (ii) the increased range of detection methods of transient species from the UV-Vis to the infrared region; (iii) the introduction of Raman spectroscopy to augment IR studies; (iv) examination of combination events to supplement dissociation events; (v) the interrogation of transient structures by X-ray absorption spectroscopy; (vi) the study of reactions taking place at solid surfaces.

Time-resolved X-ray spectroscopies of chemical systems: New perspectives

The past 3-5 years have witnessed a dramatic increase in the number of time-resolved X-ray spectroscopic studies, mainly driven by novel technical and methodological developments. The latter include (i) the high repetition rate optical pump/X-ray probe studies, which have greatly boosted the signal-to-noise ratio for picosecond (ps) X-ray absorption spectroscopy studies, while enabling ps X-ray emission spectroscopy (XES) at synchrotrons; (ii) the X-ray free electron lasers (XFELs) are a game changer and have allowed the first femtosecond (fs) XES and resonant inelastic X-ray scattering experiments to be carried out; (iii) XFELs are also opening the road to the development of non-linear X-ray methods. In this perspective, I will mainly focus on the most recent technical developments and briefly address some examples of scientific questions that have been addressed thanks to them. I will look at the novel opportunities in the horizon.

Identification of a new electron-transfer relaxation pathway in photoexcited pyrrole dimers

Photoinduced electron transfer is central to many biological processes and technological applications, such as the harvesting of solar energy and molecular electronics. The electron donor and acceptor units involved in electron transfer are often held in place by covalent bonds, π-π interactions or hydrogen bonds. Here, using time-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy and ab initio calculations, we reveal the existence of a new, low-energy, photoinduced electron-transfer mechanism in molecules held together by an NH⋯π bond. Specifically, we capture the electron-transfer process in a pyrrole dimer, from the excited π-system of the donor pyrrole to a Rydberg orbital localized on the N-atom of the acceptor pyrrole, mediated by an N-H stretch on the acceptor molecule. The resulting charge-transfer state is surprisingly long lived and leads to efficient electronic relaxation. We propose that this relaxation pathway plays an important role in biological and technological systems containing the pyrrole building block.

Molecular and Interfacial Calculations of Iron(II) Light Harvesters

Iron-carbene complexes show considerable promise as earth-abundant light-harvesters, and adsorption onto nanostructured TiO2 is a crucial step for developing solar energy applications. Intrinsic electron injection capabilities of such promising Fe(II) N-heterocyclic complexes (Fe-NHC) to TiO2 are calculated here, and found to correlate well with recent experimental findings of highly efficient interfacial injection. First, we examine the special bonding characteristics of Fe-NHC light harvesters. The excited-state surfaces are examined using density functional theory (DFT) and time-dependent DFT (TD-DFT) to explore relaxed excited-state properties. Finally, by relaxing an Fe-NHC adsorbed on a TiO2 nanocluster, we show favorable injection properties in terms of interfacial energy level alignment and electronic coupling suitable for efficient electron injection of excited electrons from the Fe complex into the TiO2 conduction band on ∼100 fs time scales.

Coherent transport through spin-crossover magnet Fe2 complexes

As one of the most promising building blocks in molecular spintronics, spin crossover (SCO) complexes have attracted increasing attention due to their magnetic bistability between the high-spin (HS) and low-spin (LS) states. Here, we explore the electronic structures and transport properties of SCO magnet Fe2 complexes with three different spin-pair configurations, namely [LS-LS], [LS-HS], and [HS-HS], by performing extensive density functional theory calculations combined with the non-equilibrium Green's function technique. Our calculations clearly reveal that the SCO magnet Fe2 complexes should display two-step spin transitions triggered by external stimuli, i.e. temperature or light, which confirm the previous phenomenological model and agree well with previous experimental measurements. Based on the calculated transport results, we observe a nearly perfect spin-filtering effect and negative differential resistance (NDR) behavior integrated in the SCO magnet Fe2 junction with the [HS-HS] configuration. The current through the [HS-HS] SCO magnet Fe2 complex under a small bias voltage is mainly contributed by the spin-down electrons, which is significantly larger than those of the [LS-LS] and [LS-HS] cases. The bias-dependent transmissions are responsible for the observed NDR effect. These theoretical findings suggest that SCO Fe2 complexes hold potential applications in molecular spintronic devices.
