Abstract
Heterobi- and multimetallic complexes providing close proximity between several metal centers serve as active species in artificial and enzymatic catalysis, and in model systems, showing unique modes of metal-metal cooperative bond activation. Through the rational design of well-defined, unsymmetrical ligand scaffolds, we create a convenient approach to support the assembly of heterometallic species in a well-defined and site-specific manner, preventing them from scrambling and dissociation. In this perspective, we will outline general strategies for the design of unsymmetrical ligands to support heterobi- and multimetallic complexes that show reactivity in various types of heterometallic cooperative bond activation.

Abstract
A metal-free catalytic oxidation of α-diazoesters via a green environmental-friendly route was developed. The α-diazoesters were converted to α-ketoesters using DMF and molecular oxygen as oxygen sources and B(C6F5)3 as the catalyst, without any additives. This protocol has a broad adaptability of substrates and good compatibility with a range of functional groups, and it offers new insight into reactions catalyzed by B(C6F5)3.

Abstract
Chiral quinacridines react up to four times, step-by-step, with α-diazomalonates under RuII and RhII catalysis. By selecting the catalyst, [CpRu(CH3 CN)3 ][PF6 ] (Cp=cyclopentadienyl) or Rh2 (oct)4 , chemo and regioselective insertions of derived metal carbenes are achieved in favor of mono- or bis-functionalized malonate derivatives, respectively, (r.r.>49 : 1, up to 77 % yield, 12 examples). This multi-introduction of malonate groups is particularly useful to tune optical and chemical properties such as absorption, emission or Brønsted acidity but also cellular bioimaging. Density-functional theory further elucidates the origin of the carbene insertion selectivity and also showcases the importance of conformations in the optical response.

Abstract
A well-performing machine learning (ML) model is obtained by using proper descriptors and artificial neural network (ANN) algorithms, which can quickly and accurately predict activation free energy in hydrogen atom transfer (HAT)-based sp3 C-H activation. Density functional theory calculations (UωB97X-D) are used to establish the reaction system data sets of methoxyl (CH3O·), trifluoroethoxyl (CF3CH2O·), tert-butoxyl (tBuO·), and cumyloxyl (CumO·) radicals. The simplified Roberts' equation proposed in our recent study works here [R 2 = 0.84, mean absolute error (MAE) = 0.85 kcal/mol]. Its performance is comparable with univariate Mulliken-type electronegativity (χ) with the ANN model. The ANN model with bond dissociation free energy, χ, α-unsaturation, and Nolan buried volume (%V buried) successively improves R 2 and MAE to 0.93 and 0.54 kcal/mol, respectively. It reproduces the test sets of trichloroethoxyl (CCl3CH2O·) with R 2 = 0.87 and MAE = 0.89 kcal/mol and accurately predicts the relative experimental barrier of the HAT reactions with CumO· and the site selectivity of CH3O·.

Abstract
Methylidene complexes often couple to ethylene complexes, but the mechanistic insight is scant. The path by which two cations [(η5-C5H5)Re(NO)(PPh3)(═CH2)]+ (5+) transform (CH2Cl2/acetonitrile) to [(η5-C5H5)Re(NO)(PPh3)(H2C═CH2)]+ (6+) and [(η5-C5H5)Re(NO)(PPh3)(NCCH3)]+ is studied by density functional theory. Experiments provide a number of constraints such as the second-order rate in 5+; no prior ligand dissociation/exchange; a faster reaction of (S)-5+ with (S)-5+ than with (R)-5+ ("enantiomer self-recognition"). Although dirhenium dications with Re(μ-CH2)2Re cores represent energy minima, they are not accessible by 2 + 2 cycloadditions of 5+. Transition states leading to ReCH2CH2Re linkages are prohibitively high in energy. However, 5+ can give non-covalent SRe/SRe or SRe/RRe dimers with π interactions between the PPh3 ligands but long ReCH2···H2CRe and H2CRe···H2CRe distances (3.073-3.095 Å and 3.878-4.529 Å, respectively). In rate-determining steps, these afford [(η5-C5H5)Re(NO)(PPh3)(μ-η2:η2-H2C···CH2)(Ph3P)(ON)Re(η5-C5H5)]2+ (132+), in which one rhenium binds the bridging ethylene more tightly than the other (2.115-2.098 vs 2.431-2.486 Å to the centroid). In the SRe/RRe adduct, Dewar-Chatt-Duncanson optimization leads to unfavorable PPh3/PPh3 contacts. Ligand interactions are further dissected in the preceding transition states via component analyses, and ΔΔG‡ (1.2 kcal/mol, CH2Cl2) favors the SRe/SRe pathway, in accordance with the experiment. Acetonitrile then displaces 6+ from the more weakly bound rhenium of 132+. The formation of similar μ-H2C···CH2 intermediates is found to be rate-determining for varied coordinatively saturated M═CH2 species [M = Fe(d6)/Re(d4)/Ta(d2)], establishing generality and enhancing relevancy to catalytic CH4 and CO/H2 chemistry.

Abstract
Herein, we report the first catalytic one-step synthesis of cyclopropenium cations (CPCs) with readily available alkynes and hypervalent iodine reagents as carbyne sources. Key to the process is the catalytic generation of a novel Rh-carbynoid that formally transfers monovalent cationic carbynes (:+C-R) to alkynes via an oxidative [2+1] cycloaddition. Our process is able to synthesize a new type of CPC substituted with an ester group that underpins the regioselective attack of a broad range of carbon and heteroatomic nucleophiles, thus providing a new platform for the synthesis of valuable cyclopropenes difficult or not possible to make by current methodologies.

Abstract
Transition metal-catalysed carbene- and nitrene transfer to the C1-building blocks carbon monoxide and isocyanides provides heteroallenes (i.e. ketenes, isocyanates, ketenimines and carbodiimides). These are versatile and reactive compounds allowing in situ transformation towards numerous functional groups and organic compounds, including heterocycles. Both one-pot and tandem processes have been developed providing valuable synthetic methods for the organic chemistry toolbox. This review discusses all known transition metal-catalysed carbene- and nitrene transfer reactions towards carbon monoxide and isocyanides and in situ transformation of the heteroallenes hereby obtained, with a special focus on the general mechanistic considerations.

Abstract
This paper describes the synthesis of enamino carbonyl compounds by the copper(i)-catalyzed coupling of acceptor-substituted diazo compounds and tertiary thioamides. We plan to use this method to synthesize indolizidine (−)-237D analogs to find α6-selective antismoking agents. Therefore, we also performed in silico α6-nAchRs binding studies of selected products. Compounds with low root-mean-square deviation values showed more favorable binding free energies. We also report preliminary pharmacokinetic data on indolizidine (−)-237D and found it to have weak activity at CYP3A4. In addition, as enamino carbonyl compounds are also known for antimicrobial properties, we screened previously reported and new enamino carbonyl compounds for antibacterial, antimicrobial, and antifungal properties. Eleven compounds showed significant antimicrobial activities. This paper describes the synthesis of enamino carbonyl compounds by the copper(i)-catalyzed coupling of acceptor-substituted diazo compounds and tertiary thioamides.![]()

Abstract
Herein, we report the development of a method for highly regio-, stereo-, and enantioselective B-H bond insertion reactions of α-silylcarbenes generated from 1-silylcyclopropenes in the presence of a chiral copper(I)/bisoxazoline catalyst for the construction of chiral γ,γ-disubstituted allylic gem-silylboranes, which cannot be prepared by any other known methods. This reaction is the first highly enantioselective carbene insertion reaction of α-silylcarbenes ever to be reported. The method shows general applicability for various 3,3-disubstituted silylcyclopropenes and exclusively affords E-products. The novel chiral γ,γ-disubstituted allylic gem-silylborane products are versatile allylic bimetallic reagents with high stability and have great synthetic potential, especially for the construction of complex molecules with continuous chiral centers.

Abstract

The
selective functionalization
of sp3 C–H bonds
is a versatile tool for the diversification of organic compounds.
Combining attractive features of homogeneous and enzymatic catalysts,
artificial metalloenzymes offer an ideal means to selectively modify
these inert motifs. Herein, we report on a copper(I) heteroscorpionate
complex embedded within streptavidin that catalyzes the intramolecular
insertion of a carbene into sp3 C–H bonds. Target
residues for genetic optimization of the artificial metalloenzyme
were identified by quantum mechanics/molecular mechanics simulations.
Double-saturation mutagenesis yielded detailed insight on the contribution
of individual amino acids on the activity and the selectivity of the
artificial metalloenzyme. Mutagenesis at a third position afforded
a set of artificial metalloenzymes that catalyze the enantio- and
regioselective formation of β- and γ-lactams with high
turnovers and promising enantioselectivities.

Abstract
Described herein is a B(C6 F5 )3 -catalyzed S-H insertion reaction of thiophenols and thiols with α-diazoesters to access valuable α-thioesters. With the established protocol, an array of α-thioester products are generated in moderate to good yields with broad scope and functional group tolerance. In addition, this reaction maintains its high efficiency on gram scale and the product can be easily transformed into other useful motifs. This reaction proceeds under solvent-free conditions at room temperature, and generally finishes in twenty minutes upon magnet stirring, which offers an expedient way for synthesis of thioether-containing compounds.

Abstract
Translating the power of transition metal catalysis to the native habitats of enzymes can significantly expand the possibilities of interrogating or manipulating natural biological systems, including living cells and organisms. This is especially relevant for organometallic reactions that have shown great potential in the field of organic synthesis, like the metal-catalyzed transfer of carbenes. While, at first sight, performing metal carbene chemistry in aqueous solvents, and especially in biologically relevant mixtures, does not seem obvious, in recent years there has been a growing number of reports demonstrating the feasibility of the task. Either using small molecule metal catalysts or artificial metalloenzymes, a number of carbene transfer reactions that tolerate aqueous and biorelevant media are being developed. This review intends to summarize the most relevant contributions, and establish the state of the art in this emerging research field.

Abstract
Herein, we report a simple method for functionalized enals involving enal-transfer reaction of water-soluble N-methoxypyridazinium salts. This open-flask reaction proceeds under mild aqueous basic conditions through [2,3]-sigmatropic rearrangement of propargyl/allyl sulfur-ylides derived from in situ-generated Rh-(E)-enalcarbene. Various synthetically challenging allene- and allyl-functionalized (E)-enals with a γ-C(sp3) quaternary center were obtained in good to high yields. InCl3-catalyzed cascade cyclization of allenyl-enal and aniline gave a valuable pyrrolo[1,2-a]quinoline motif.

Abstract
A powerful approach to cooperative group-transfer catalysis is demonstrated using the Co=Si bond of a cobalt silylene to provide two distinct sites for substrate activation. The orthogonal selectivity of the Co and Si centers enables efficient nitrene-group transfer to carbon monoxide by avoiding poisoning that would result from substrates competing for a single reactive site.

Abstract
A new bismuth(V) oxidative catalytic system has been developed and applied for the conversion of hydrazones into diazo compounds. With the use of low catalytic amounts of Ph3Bi and AcOH with NaBO3·H2O as a terminal oxidant, the in situ formation of Ph3Bi(OAc)2 is capable of oxidizing hydrazones in excellent yields. The reaction was applied for the synthesis of diazocarbonyls and 2,2,2-trifluoromethyl diazoalkanes in good to excellent yields.

Abstract
Gold nanoparticles stabilized by NHC ligands and supported onto reduced graphene oxide (rGO) catalyse the functionalization of cyclohexane and benzene C-H bonds upon insertion of carbene CHCO2Et (from N2CHCO2Et) groups. This is the first example in which such Csp3-H or Csp2-H bonds are functionalized with this strategy with nanoparticulated gold. This Au-NP@rGO material shows an exceptional activity, providing TON values 5-10 times higher than those already reported for molecular gold catalysts. Recyclability is also effective, reaching an accumulated TON value of 1400 after six consecutive uses.

Abstract
Functionalization of carboxylic acids using sulfoxonium ylides in the presence of [VO(acac)2] as a catalyst is reported. The usual carbene source, diazo compounds, failed to produce α-carbonyloxy esters in good yield when compared to sulfoxonium ylides. Various standard spectroscopic and analytical techniques were used to characterize the products formed.

Abstract
C-H functionalization has been emerging as a powerful method to establish carbon-carbon and carbon-heteroatom bonds. Many efforts have been devoted to transition-metal-catalyzed direct transformations of C-H bonds. Metal carbenes generated in situ from transition-metal compounds and diazo or its equivalents are usually applied as the transient reactive intermediates to furnish a catalytic cycle for new C-C and C-X bond formation. Using this strategy compounds from unactivated simple alkanes to complex molecules can be further functionalized or transformed to multi-functionalized compounds. In this area, transition-metal-catalyzed carbene insertion to C-H bonds has been paid continuous attention. Diverse catalyst design strategies, synthetic methods, and potential applications have been developed. This critical review will summarize the advance in transition-metal-catalyzed carbene insertion to C-H bonds dated up to July 2021, by the categories of C-H bonds from aliphatic C(sp3)-H, aryl (aromatic) C(sp2)-H, heteroaryl (heteroaromatic) C(sp2)-H bonds, alkenyl C(sp2)-H, and alkynyl C(sp)-H, as well as asymmetric carbene insertion to C-H bonds, and more coverage will be given to the recent work. Due to the rapid development of the C-H functionalization area, future directions in this topic are also discussed. This review will give the authors an overview of carbene insertion chemistry in C-H functionalization with focus on the catalytic systems and synthetic applications in C-C bond formation.
