Abstract
Abstract
The single functionalization of the parent centropolyindane hydrocarbons fenestrindane (2) and centrohexaindane (3) at the molecular arene periphery has been studied. The monoformylation of 2 and 3 using the Rieche method resulted in the corresponding aldehydes, 7 and 10, in 23% and 35% yield, respectively. The Friedel-Crafts acetylation of 2 furnished 2-acetylfenestrindane (8) in 53% yield, and the Baeyer-Villiger oxidation of 7 followed by hydrolysis resulted in the 2-hydroxyfenestrindane (9) in 72% yield. The results show that electrophilic attack at one of the eight or, respectively, even 12 equivalent positions of 2 and 3 is a viable method for the monofunctionalization of these polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons.

Abstract
The solid-state molecular structure of centrohexaindane (), a unique hydrocarbon comprising six benzene rings clamped to each other in three dimensions around a neopentane core, and the molecular packing in crystals of ·CHCl3 are reported. The molecular Td-symmetry and the Cartesian orientation of the six indane wings of in the solid state have been confirmed. The course and limitation of electrophilic aromatic substitution of are demonstrated for the case of nitration. Based on nitration experiments of a lower congener of , tribenzotriquinacene , the six-fold nitrofunctionalisation of has been achieved in excellent yield, giving four constitutional isomers, two nonsymmetrical ( and ) and two C3-symmetrical ones ( and ), all of which contain one single nitro group in each of the six benzene rings. The relative yields of the four isomers (∼3 : 1 : 1 : 3) point to a random electrophilic attack of the electrophiles at the twelve formally equivalent outer positions of the aromatic periphery of , suggesting electronic independence of its six aromatic π-electron systems. In turn, the pronounced conformational rigidity of the centrohexacyclic framework of enables the unequivocal structural identification of the isomeric hexanitrocentrohexaindanes by (1)H NMR spectroscopy.

Abstract
Detailed insights gained from our research into the gas-phase chemistry of ionized and protonated diphenylalkanes and their congeners, obtained by extended synthesis of isotopically labeled model compounds and mass spectrometry, are presented and merged with those acquired during our development of a new family of polycyclic hydrocarbons, the centropolyindanes. Aside from a Personal Account that describes "two scientific lives in one", it is demonstrated, on the one hand, how our understanding of organic chemistry can help to shed light on the details of mass spectrometric fragmentation and to unravel, in a more fundamental way, the unimolecular reactivity of gaseous ions. On the other hand, it is shown how unexpected reactivity of related ions in solution, being subject to the very same fundamentals of organic chemistry, can lead to the construction of novel and, in part, unique three-dimensional polycyclic structures that may contribute to future research in material science. Two such apparently independent fields of organic chemistry may be seen as joint contributions of the art of science.

Abstract
We report the synthesis of a tribenzotriquinacene-based (TBTQ) receptor (3) for C60 fullerene, which is extended by pentiptycene moieties to provide an almost enclosed concave ball bearing. The system serves as a model for a self-assembling molecular rotor with a flexible and adapting stator. Unexpectedly, nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopic investigations reveal a surprisingly low complex stability constant of K1 =213±37 M(-1) for [C60 ⊂3], seemingly inconsistent with the previously reported TBTQ systems. Molecular dynamics (MD) simulations have been conducted for three different [C60 ⊂TBTQ] complexes to resolve this. Because of the dominating dispersive interactions, the binding energies increase with the contact area between guest and host, however, only for rigid host structures. By means of free-energy calculations with an explicit solvent model it can be shown that the novel flexible TBTQ receptor 3 binds weakly because of hampering entropic contributions.

Abstract
The reaction between 2,6-diazasemibullvalenes and nitroso compounds was investigated. Aza-triquinacene derivatives of interesting structural and synthetic chemistry were generated highly selectively in good to excellent isolated yields. This reaction, which was rarely found between common aziridine derivatives and nitroso compounds, could be attributed to the rigid polycyclic ring system and the substitution patterns of 2,6-diazasemibullvalenes. Δ(1) -Bipyrroline derivatives were formed in excellent yields when these aza-triquinacene derivatives were treated with SmI2 .

Abstract
A synthetic method to chemoselectively prepare 1H-cyclopenta[b]naphthalenes, cis-cyclopenten-2-yl δ-diketones, and bicyclo[3.2.0]hepta-1,5-dienes efficiently by gold-catalyzed cycloisomerization of 1,6-diyne esters is described. These three product classes were accessed divergently by taking advantage of the electronic and steric differences between a phosphine and NHC (NHC = N-heterocyclic carbene) ligand in the respective gold(I) complexes and that of gold(III) complex combined with substrate substitution patterns and optimized reaction conditions. In the presence of [PhCNAuIPr](+)SbF6(-) (IPr = 1,3-bis(2,6-diisopropylphenyl)imidazol-2-ylidine) as the catalyst, substrates with a pendant aryl group at the acetate alkynyl position were found to undergo preferential 1,3-acyloxy migration/5-exo-dig cyclization/Friedel-Crafts reaction to give 1H-cyclopenta[b]naphthalenes. In contrast, the analogous reactions with PicAuCl2 (Pic =2-picolinate) were found to proceed by selective 1,3-acyloxy migration/5-exo-dig cyclization/1,5-acyl migration to afford cis-cyclopenten-2-yl δ-diketones. Changing the catalyst to [MeCNAu(JohnPhos)](+)SbF6(-) (JohnPhos = (1,1'-biphenyl-2-yl)-di-tert-butylphosphine) and the acetate alkynyl position from an aryl to vinyl substituent in the starting ester led to 1,3-acyloxy migration/5-exo-dig cyclization/Prins-type [2 + 2]-cycloaddition to provide bicyclo[3.2.0]hepta-1,5-dienes.

Abstract
Fenestranes are an intriguing class of highly strained molecules possessing a quaternary carbon with bonds that deviate from the canonical tetrahedral geometry. Herein we report the discovery that the natural product pleuromutilin can be used as a structurally complex starting material for the synthesis of a series of bridged cis,cis,cis,cis-[4.5.5.5]- and cis,cis,cis,cis-[4.5.7.5]oxafenestranes through a carbocation rearrangement cascade. X-ray crystallographic analysis of several cis,cis,cis,cis-[4.5.5.5]oxafenestranes shows a significant planarization of the central tetracoordinate carbon atom and demonstrates the influence of bridgehead substituents and bridging rings on planarity.

Abstract
The unidirectional triple-hydrogen (3H) rearrangement of the radical cations of 3-aryl-1-propanols bearing an electron-rich substitutent in the para-position was investigated for the diastereomeric 2-(4-dimethylamino)benzylcyclohexanols and 2-(4-dimethylamino)-benzylcyclopentanols and confirmed to be a highly stereospecific feature. Whereas the standard electron ionization (EI) (70 eV) mass spectra of the trans-isomers exhibit very minor (approximately 2%-3%) albeit stereospecific peaks for the relevant C8H13N*+ ions (m/z 123), the metastable ion [mass-analyzed ion kinetic energy (MIKE)] spectra show these peaks with significant relative intensity (8%-17%). The respective cis-isomers do not undergo the 3H rearrangement, be it under standard or under metastable-ion conditions. The stereospecific 3H rearrangement is suppressed in the radical cations of cis- and trans-3-(4-dimethylamino)phenylcyclohexanol, the mass and MIKE spectra of which are governed by cleavage processes of the cyclohexane ring, which impedes the stereochemical assignment of the isomers by mass spectrometry. A multistep mechanism for the unidirectional 3H rearrangement is discussed in view of the present and previous experimental data.

Abstract
Based on a regioselective tris-formylation of a tribenzotriquinacene (TBTQ) hydrocarbon, the racemic C(3)-symmetrical TBTQ-trialdehyde and the corresponding TBTQ-trimethanol were synthesized along with their C(1)-isomers. Conversion of the C(3)-trialdehyde to three diastereomeric TBTQ-based cryptophanes occurring in high yield enabled the preparation of the optically pure C(3)-symmetrical TBTQ-trialdehydes and the determination of their absolute configuration. The racemic C(3)-symmetrical TBTQ-trimethanol was found to form several stable nanotubular aggregates in the solid state.

Abstract
The single-wing extension of the bowl-shaped tribenzotriquinacene (TBTQ) framework with polycondensed aromatic hydrocarbon units has been reported. In the course of a Scholl reaction, one of the three-dimensional bays of the TBTQ core has been bridged by a PAH unit to generate a seven-membered ring within the merged TBTQ-(hexa-peri-hexabenzocoronene) scaffold.
