Abstract
Photofunctional molecules and assemblies lie at the heart of many important fundamental processes in nature, and researchers have generated multitudes of artificial chromophores intended to mimic these naturally occurring systems. As dynamic spectroscopic techniques are becoming more widely available, ultrafast techniques in particular, substantial insight continues to be gleaned from the initial photon stimulation event through internal conversion, structural rearrangements, intersystem crossing, energy migration, electron transfer events, and ultimately regeneration of the ground state chromophores in both naturally occurring and inspired chromophores. This Account details research endeavors motivated by the concept that merging organic and inorganic chromophores can lead to new molecules exhibiting novel excited state properties. Moreover, these excited state properties can be fundamentally understood using combinations of static and dynamic spectroscopic tools, yielding systematic improvements to molecules poised for application in diverse research areas including light-harvesting, lifetime engineering, photocatalysis, and photochemical upconversion. Initial explorations focused on utilizing Förster energy transfer processes in Ru(II)-based metal-organic chromophores for solar light-harvesting while maintaining long excited state lifetimes. This eventually led to molecules exhibiting triplet-triplet energy transfer between energetically proximate triplet states featuring thermally activated photoluminescence from the upper charge transfer excited state with markedly extended lifetimes. Interest in systematically producing long-lived excited states with concomitant large Stokes shifts inspired the development of numerous Pt(II) bipyridyl and terpyridyl acetylide charge transfer chromophores featuring ultrafast intramolecular energy migration, high quantum yield ligand-localized phosphorescence at room temperature, and synthetically tunable excited state absorption properties. This structural motif also made it possible to access the triplet excited states of perylenediimide chromophores, permitting quantitative examination of internal conversion and intersystem crossing processes in these complex molecules. The generation of new metal-organic structures featuring unique photophysics appears limitless and simply requires the continued ingenuity of researchers.

Abstract
Thanks to major advances in laser technologies, recent investigations of the ultrafast coupling of nuclear and electronic degrees of freedom (vibronic coupling) have revealed that such coupling plays a crucial role in a wide range of photoinduced reactions in condensed phase supramolecular systems. This paper investigates several new donor–bridge–acceptor charge-transfer molecular assemblies built on a trans-Pt(ii) acetylide core. We also investigate how targeted vibrational excitation with low-energy IR light post electronic excitation can perturb vibronic coupling and affect the efficiency of electron transfer (ET) in solution phase. We compare and contrast properties of a range of donor–bridge–acceptor Pt(ii) trans-acetylide assemblies, where IR excitation of bridge vibrations during UV-initiated charge separation in some cases alters the yields of light-induced product states. We show that branching to multiple product states from a transition state with appropriate energetics is the most rigid condition for the type of vibronic control we demonstrate in our study.

Abstract
The synthesis, structural characterization, and excited-state dynamics of series of diketopyrrolopyrrole (DPP) bridged homodinuclear Ir(III) and heterodinuclear Ir(III)/Pt(II) complexes is described. Steady-state and time-resolved photoluminescence along with transient absorption measurements were used to probe the nature of the emissive and long-lived excited states. Upon excitation into the (1)DPP ligand-localized excited state in the presence of coordinated Ir(III) or Pt(II) metal centers, the intersystem crossing is enhanced, leading to a quenching of the (1)DPP fluorescence and the formation of the long-lived (τ ≈ 30-40 μs) (3)DPP excited state in all instances.

Abstract
A cyclometalated iridium complex is reported where the core complex comprises naphthylpyridine as the main ligand and the ancillary 2,2'-bipyridine ligand is attached to a pyrene unit by a short alkyl bridge. To obtain the complex with satisfactory purity, it was necessary to modify the standard synthesis (direct reaction of the ancillary ligand with the chloro-bridged iridium dimer) to a method harnessing an intermediate tetramethylheptanolate-based complex, which was subjected to acid-promoted removal of the ancillary ligand and subsequent complexation. The photophysical behavior of the bichromophoric complex and a model complex without the pendant pyrene were studied using steady-state and time-resolved spectroscopies. Reversible electronic energy transfer (REET) is demonstrated, uniquely with an emissive cyclometalated iridium center and an adjacent organic chromophore. After excited-state equilibration is established (5 ns) as a result of REET, extremely long luminescence lifetimes of up to 225 μs result, compared to 8.3 μs for the model complex, without diminishing the emission quantum yield. As a result, remarkably high oxygen sensitivity is observed in both solution and polymeric matrices.

Abstract
Triplet photosensitizers (PSs) are compounds that can be efficiently excited to the triplet excited state which subsequently act as catalysts in photochemical reactions. The name is originally derived from compounds that were used to transfer the triplet energy to other compounds that have only a small intrinsic triplet state yield. Triplet PSs are not only used for triplet energy transfer, but also for photocatalytic organic reactions, photodynamic therapy (PDT), photoinduced hydrogen production from water and triplet-triplet annihilation (TTA) upconversion. A good PS should exhibit strong absorption of the excitation light, a high yield of intersystem crossing (ISC) for efficient production of the triplet state, and a long triplet lifetime to allow for the reaction with a reactant molecule. Most transition metal complexes show efficient ISC, but small molar absorption coefficients in the visible spectral region and short-lived triplet excited states, which make them unsuitable as triplet PSs. One obstacle to the development of new triplet PSs is the difficulty in predicting the ISC of chromophores, especially of organic compounds without any heavy atoms. This review article summarizes some molecular design rationales for triplet PSs, based on the molecular structural factors that facilitate ISC. The design of transition metal complexes with large molar absorption coefficients in the visible spectral region and long-lived triplet excited states is presented. A new method of using a spin converter to construct heavy atom-free organic triplet PSs is discussed, with which ISC becomes predictable, C60 being an example. To enhance the performance of triplet PSs, energy funneling based triplet PSs are proposed, which show broadband absorption in the visible region. Applications of triplet PSs in photocatalytic organic reactions, hydrogen production, triplet-triplet annihilation upconversion and luminescent oxygen sensing are briefly introduced.

Abstract
RuII complexes incorporating both amide-linked bithiophene donor ancillary ligands and laminate acceptor ligands; dipyrido[3,2-a:2',3'-c]phenazine (dppz), tetrapyrido[3,2-a:2',3'-c:3'',2''-h:2''',3'''-j]phenazine (tpphz), and 9,11,20,22-tetraazatetrapyrido[3,2-a:2',3'-c:3'',2''-l:2''',3''']-pentacene (tatpp) exhibit long-lived charge separated (CS) states, which have been analyzed using time-resolved transient absorption (TA), fluorescence, and electronic absorption spectroscopy in addition to ground state electrochemical and spectroelectrochemical measurements. These complexes possess two electronically relevant ³MLCT states related to electron occupation of MOs localized predominantly on the proximal "bpy-like" portion and central (or distal) "phenazine-like" portion of the acceptor ligand as well as energetically similar ³LC and ³ILCT states. The unusually long excited state lifetimes (τ up to 7 μs) observed in these complexes reflect an equilibration of the ³MLCTprox or ³MLCTdist states with additional triplet states, including a ³LC state and a ³ILCT state that formally localizes a hole on the bithiophene moiety and an electron on the laminate acceptor ligand. Coordination of a ZnII ion to the open coordination site of the laminate acceptor ligand is observed to significantly lower the energy of the ³MLCTdist state by decreasing the magnitude of the excited state dipole and resulting in much shorter excited state lifetimes. The presence of the bithiophene donor group is reported to substantially extend the lifetime of these Zn adducts via formation of a ³ILCT state that can equilibrate with the ³MLCTdist state. In tpphz complexes, ZnII coordination can reorder the energy of the ³MLCTprox and ³MLCTdist states such that there is a distinct switch from one state to the other. The net result is a series of complexes that are capable of forming CS states with electron-hole spatial separation of up to 14 Å and possess exceptionally long lifetimes by equilibration with other triplet states.

Abstract
Efficient thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) has been characterized for a carbazole/sulfone derivative in both solutions and doped films. A pure blue organic light emitting diode (OLED) based on this compound demonstrates a very high external quantum efficiency (EQE) of nearly 10% at low current density. Because TADF only occurs in a bipolar system where donor and acceptor centered (3)ππ* states are close to or higher than the triplet intramolecular charge transfer ((3)CT) state, control of the π-conjugation length of both donor and acceptor is considered to be as important as breaking the π-conjugation between them in blue TADF material design.

Abstract
The ability of luminescent semiconductor quantum dots (QDs) to engage in diverse energy transfer processes with organic dyes, light-harvesting proteins, metal complexes, and redox-active labels continues to stimulate interest in developing them for biosensing and light-harvesting applications. Within biosensing configurations, changes in the rate of energy transfer between the QD and the proximal donor, or acceptor, based upon some external (biological) event form the principle basis for signal transduction. However, designing QD sensors to function optimally is predicated on a full understanding of all relevant energy transfer mechanisms. In this report, we examine energy transfer between a range of CdSe-ZnS core-shell QDs and a redox-active osmium(II) polypyridyl complex. To facilitate this, the Os complex was synthesized as a reactive isothiocyanate and used to label a hexahistidine-terminated peptide. The Os-labeled peptide was ratiometrically self-assembled to the QDs via metal affinity coordination, bringing the Os complex into close proximity of the nanocrystal surface. QDs displaying different emission maxima were assembled with increasing ratios of Os-peptide complex and subjected to detailed steady-state, ultrafast transient absorption, and luminescence lifetime decay analyses. Although the possibility exists for charge transfer quenching interactions, we find that the QD donors engage in relatively efficient Förster resonance energy transfer with the Os complex acceptor despite relatively low overall spectral overlap. These results are in contrast to other similar QD donor-redox-active acceptor systems with similar separation distances, but displaying far higher spectral overlap, where charge transfer processes were reported to be the dominant QD quenching mechanism.

Abstract
C60-styryl Bodipy dyads that show strong absorption of visible light (ε = 64,600 M(-1) cm(-1) at 657 nm) and a long-lived triplet excited state (τT = 123.2 μs) are prepared. The dyads were used as heavy-atom-free organic triplet photosensitizers for photooxidation of 1,5-dihydroxynaphthalene via the photosensitizing of singlet oxygen ((1)O2). The photooxidation efficiency of the dyads compared to the conventional Ir(III) complex (1)O2 photosensitizer increased 19-fold.

Abstract
Ruthenium(II) polypyridyl complexes with pendant bithienyl ligands exhibiting unusually long-lived (τ ~ 3-7 μs) charge-separated excited states and a large amount of stored energy (ΔG° ~ 2.0 eV) are reported. A long-lived ligand-localized triplet acts as an energy reservoir to fuel population of an interligand charge-transfer state via an intermediate metal-to-ligand charge-transfer state in these complexes.
