Abstract
Herein, we report the synthesis and characterization of a series of terminal uranium(iv) hydrosulfido and sulfido complexes, supported by the hexadentate, tacn-based ligand framework (Ad,MeArO)3tacn3- (= trianion of 1,4,7-tris(3-(1-adamantyl)-5-methyl-2-hydroxybenzyl)-1,4,7-triazacyclononane). The hydrosulfido complex [((Ad,MeArO)3tacn)U-SH] (2) is obtained from the reaction of H2S with the uranium(iii) starting material [((Ad,MeArO)3tacn)U] (1) in THF. Subsequent deprotonation with potassium bis(trimethylsilyl)amide yields the mononuclear uranium(iv) sulfido species in good yields. With the aid of dibenzo-18-crown-6 and 2.2.2-cryptand, it was possible to isolate a terminal sulfido species, capped by the potassium counter ion, and a "free" terminal sulfido species with a well separated cation/anion pair. Spectroscopic and computational analyses provided insights into the nature of the uranium-sulfur bond in these complexes.

Abstract
Controlling the steric environment in U(η8-C8H6(1,4-SiR3)2)(η5-Cp*)] enables selective formation of either mononuclear U(v) or dinuclear U(iv) oxo and nitrido complexes.
The synthesis and molecular structures of a U(v) neutral terminal oxo complex and a U(v) sodium uranium nitride contact ion pair are described. The synthesis of the former is achieved by the use of tBuNCO as a mild oxygen transfer reagent, whilst that of the latter is via the reduction of NaN3. Both mono-uranium complexes are stabilised by the presence of bulky silyl substituents on the ligand framework that facilitate a 2e– oxidation of a single U(iii) centre. In contrast, when steric hindrance around the metal centre is reduced by the use of less bulky silyl groups, the products are di-uranium, U(iv) bridging oxo and (anionic) nitride complexes, resulting from 1e– oxidations of two U(iii) centres. SQUID magnetometry supports the formal oxidation states of the reported complexes. Electrochemical studies show that the U(v) terminal oxo complex can be reduced and the [U(iv)O]– anion was accessed via reduction with K/Hg, and structurally characterised. Both the nitride complexes display complex electrochemical behaviour but each exhibits a quasi-reversible oxidation at ca. –1.6 V vs. Fc+/0.

Abstract
Prior to the year 2000, non-aqueous uranium chemistry mainly involved metallocene and classical alkyl, amide, or alkoxide compounds as well as established carbene, imido, and oxo derivatives. Since then, there has been a resurgence of the area, and dramatic developments of supporting ligands and multiply bonded ligand types, small-molecule activation, and magnetism have been reported. This Review 1) introduces the reader to some of the specialist theories of the area, 2) covers all-important starting materials, 3) surveys contemporary ligand classes installed at uranium, including alkyl, aryl, arene, carbene, amide, imide, nitride, alkoxide, aryloxide, and oxo compounds, 4) describes advances in the area of single-molecule magnetism, and 5) summarizes the coordination and activation of small molecules, including carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, nitric oxide, dinitrogen, white phosphorus, and alkanes.

Abstract
Triamidoamine (Tren) complexes of the p- and d-block elements have been well-studied, and they display a diverse array of chemistry of academic, industrial and biological significance. Such in-depth investigations are not as widespread for Tren complexes of uranium, despite the general drive to better understand the chemical behaviour of uranium by virtue of its fundamental position within the nuclear sector. However, the chemistry of Tren-uranium complexes is characterised by the ability to stabilise otherwise reactive, multiply bonded main group donor atom ligands, construct uranium-metal bonds, promote small molecule activation, and support single molecule magnetism, all of which exploit the steric, electronic, thermodynamic and kinetic features of the Tren ligand system. This Feature Article presents a current account of the chemistry of Tren-uranium complexes.

Abstract
Reaction of [Th(I)(NR2)3] (R = SiMe3) (2) with KECPh3 (E = O, S) affords the thorium chalcogenates, [Th(ECPh3)(NR2)3] (3, E = O; 4, E = S), in moderate yields. Reductive deprotection of the trityl group from 3 and 4 by reaction with KC8, in the presence of 18-crown-6, affords the thorium oxo complex, [K(18-crown-6)][Th(O)(NR2)3] (6), and the thorium sulphide complex, [K(18-crown-6)][Th(S)(NR2)3] (7), respectively. The natural bond orbital and quantum theory of atoms-in-molecules approaches are employed to explore the metal-ligand bonding in 6 and 7 and their uranium analogues, and in particular the relative roles of the actinide 5f and 6d orbitals.

Abstract
Treatment of the metallacycle [UN*2(N,C)] [N* = N(SiMe3)2; N,C = CH2SiMe2N(SiMe3)] with [HNEt3][BPh4], [HNEt3]Cl, and [pyH][OTf] (OTf = OSO2CF3) gave the cationic compound [UN*3][BPh4] (1) and the neutral complexes [UN*3X] [X = Cl (3), OTf (4)], respectively. The dinuclear complex [{UN*(μ-N,C)(μ-OTf)}2] (5) and its tetrahydrofuran (THF) adduct [{UN*(N,C)(THF)(μ-OTf)}2] (6) were obtained by thermal decomposition of 4. The successive addition of NEt4CN or KCN to 1 led to the formation of the cyanido-bridged dinuclear compound [(UN*3)2(μ-CN)][BPh4] (7) and the mononuclear mono- and bis(cyanide) complexes [UN*3(CN)] (2) and [M][UN*3(CN)2] [M = NEt4 (8), K(THF)4 (9)], while crystals of [K(18-crown-6)][UN*3(CN)2] (10) were obtained by the oxidation of [K(18-crown-6)][UN*3(CN)] with pyridine N-oxide. The THF adduct of 1, [UN*3(THF)][BPh4], and complexes 2-7, 9 and 10 were characterized by their X-ray crystal structure. In contrast to their U(III) analogues [NMe4][UN*3(CN)] and [K(18-crown-6)]2[UN*3(CN)2] in which the CN anions are coordinated to the metal center via the C atom, complexes 2 and 9 exhibit the isocyanide U-NC coordination mode of the cyanide ligand. This U(III)/U(IV) differentiation has been analyzed using density functional theory calculations. The observed preferential coordinations are well explained considering the electronic structures of the different species and metal-ligand bonding energies. A comparison of the different quantum descriptors, i.e., bond orders, NPA/QTAIM data, and energy decomposition analysis, has allowed highlighting of the subtle balance between covalent, ionic, and steric factors that govern the U-CN/NC bonding.

Abstract
We report the uranium(VI) carbene imido oxo complex [U(BIPM(TMS))(NMes)(O)(DMAP)2] (5, BIPM(TMS) = C(PPh2 NSiMe3)2; Mes = 2,4,6-Me3C6H2; DMAP = 4-(dimethylamino)pyridine) which exhibits the unprecedented arrangement of three formal multiply bonded ligands to one metal center where the coordinated heteroatoms derive from different element groups. This complex was prepared by incorporation of carbene, imido, and then oxo groups at the uranium center by salt elimination, protonolysis, and two-electron oxidation, respectively. The oxo and imido groups adopt axial positions in a T-shaped motif with respect to the carbene, which is consistent with an inverse trans-influence. Complex 5 reacts with tert-butylisocyanate at the imido rather than carbene group to afford the uranyl(VI) carbene complex [U(BIPM(TMS))(O)2(DMAP)2] (6).

Abstract
Systematic ligand variation in a structurally conserved framework of pentavalent uranium complexes of the formulas U(V)X2[N(SiMe3)2]3 (X = F, Cl, Br, N3, NCS, 2-naphthoxide) and U(V)OX[N(SiMe3)2]3(-) (X = -CCPh, -CN) allowed an investigation into the role of the inverse trans influence in pentavalent uranium complexes. The -CCPh and -CN derivatives were only stable in the presence of the trans-U═O multiple bond, implicating the inverse trans influence in stabilizing these complexes. Spectroscopic, structural, and density functional theory calculated electronic structural data are explored. Near-IR data of all complexes is presented, displaying vibronic coupling of 5f(1) electronic transitions along the primary axis. Electrochemical characterization allowed assessment of the relative donating ability of the various axial ligands in this framework. Electron paramagnetic resonance data presented display axial spectra, with hyperfine coupling along the primary axis.

Abstract
Simple and versatile routes to the functionalization of uranyl-derived U(V)-oxo groups are presented. The oxo-lithiated, binuclear uranium(V)-oxo complexes [{(py)3LiOUO}2(L)] and [{(py)3LiOUO}(OUOSiMe3)(L)] were prepared by the direct combination of the uranyl(VI) silylamide "ate" complex [Li(py)2][(OUO)(N")3] (N" = N(SiMe3)2) with the polypyrrolic macrocycle H4L or the mononuclear uranyl (VI) Pacman complex [UO2(py)(H2L)], respectively. These oxo-metalated complexes display distinct U-O single and multiple bonding patterns and an axial/equatorial arrangement of oxo ligands. Their ready availability allows the direct functionalization of the uranyl oxo group leading to the binuclear uranium(V) oxo-stannylated complexes [{(R3Sn)OUO}2(L)] (R = nBu, Ph), which represent rare examples of mixed uranium/tin complexes. Also, uranium-oxo-group exchange occurred in reactions with [TiCl(OiPr)3] to form U-O-C bonds [{(py)3LiOUO}(OUOiPr)(L)] and [(iPrOUO)2(L)]. Overall, these represent the first family of uranium(V) complexes that are oxo-functionalised by Group 14 elements.

Abstract
The societal importance of uranium complexes containing the uranyl moiety [O═U═O](2+) continues to grow with the ongoing international nuclear enterprise and associated accumulating legacy waste. Further studies of the electronic structure of uranyl and its analogues are imperative for the development of crucial technologies, including lanthanide/actinide extractants and chemical and environmental remediation methodologies. Actinide oxo halides are a subset of the growing class of actinyl (uranyl) analogues. The understanding of their electronic structures links the detailed spectroscopic studies of uranyl, indicating the role of the pseudocore 6p orbitals in U-O bonding, to hypotheses about the 6p orbitals' role in the chemical bonding of uranyl analogues. These actinide oxo halides are a very small class of actinide compounds that present the inverse trans influence (ITI). This class of complexes was, until recently, limited to two crystallographically characterized compounds, namely, [UCl(5)O][PPh(4)] and [PaCl(5)O][NEt(4)](2). These complexes are important because they give a readily and clearly defined experimental observable: the difference between the M-X(trans) and M-X(cis) (here X = Cl) bond lengths in the solid state. This bond metric is a sensitive probe for the role of 6p, 6d, and 5f orbitals, as well as electrostatic interactions, in determining their electronic structure. This Viewpoint Article reviews the theoretical, experimental, and synthetic work on the ITI in actinide complexes and contextualizes it within broader studies on the electronic structure of uranyl and its analogues. Furthermore, our recent work on the ITI in high-valent uranium(V/VI) oxo and imido complexes is described as a whole. This work builds on the extant synthetic literature on the ITI and provides design parameters for the synthesis and characterization of high-valent uranium-ligand multiple bonds.

Abstract
Switching on uranium(V) reactivity: The silylated uranium(V) dioxo complex [(Me(3)SiOUO)(2)(L)(2)] (A) is inert to oxidation, but after two-electron reduction to [(Me(3)SiOUO)(2)(L)](2-) (1), it can be desilylated to form [OU(μ-O)(2)UO(L)(2)](2-) (2) with reinstated uranyl character. Removal of the silyl group uncovers new redox and oxo rearrangement chemistry for uranium, thus reforming the uranyl motif and involving the U(VI/V) couple in dioxygen reduction.

Abstract
Addition of 1 equiv of E (E = 0.125 S(8), Se, Te) to U(H(2)C═PPh(3))(NR(2))(3) (R = SiMe(3)) (1) in Et(2)O results in generation of the terminal chalcogenide complexes, [Ph(3)PCH(3)][U(E)(NR(2))(3)] (E = S, 2; Se, 3; Te, 4; R = SiMe(3)), in modest yield. Complexes 2-4 represent extremely rare examples of terminal uranium monochalcogenides. Synthesis of the oxo analogue, [Cp*(2)Co][U(O)(NR(2))(3)] (5), was achieved by reduction of [U(O)(NR(2))(3)] with Cp*(2)Co. All complexes were fully characterized, including analysis by X-ray crystallography. In the solid state, complexes 2-5 feature short U-E bond lengths, suggestive of actinide-ligand multiple bonding.

Abstract
We report attempts to prepare uranyl(VI)- and uranium(VI) carbenes utilizing deprotonation and oxidation strategies. Treatment of the uranyl(VI)-methanide complex [(BIPMH)UO(2)Cl(THF)] [1, BIPMH = HC(PPh(2)NSiMe(3))(2)] with benzyl-sodium did not afford a uranyl(VI)-carbene via deprotonation. Instead, one-electron reduction and isolation of di- and trinuclear [UO(2)(BIPMH)(μ-Cl)UO(μ-O){BIPMH}] (2) and [UO(μ-O)(BIPMH)(μ(3)-Cl){UO(μ-O)(BIPMH)}(2)] (3), respectively, with concomitant elimination of dibenzyl, was observed. Complexes 2 and 3 represent the first examples of organometallic uranyl(V), and 3 is notable for exhibiting rare cation-cation interactions between uranyl(VI) and uranyl(V) groups. In contrast, two-electron oxidation of the uranium(IV)-carbene [(BIPM)UCl(3)Li(THF)(2)] (4) by 4-morpholine N-oxide afforded the first uranium(VI)-carbene [(BIPM)UOCl(2)] (6). Complex 6 exhibits a trans-CUO linkage that represents a [R(2)C═U═O](2+) analogue of the uranyl ion. Notably, treatment of 4 with other oxidants such as Me(3)NO, C(5)H(5)NO, and TEMPO afforded 1 as the only isolable product. Computational studies of 4, the uranium(V)-carbene [(BIPM)UCl(2)I] (5), and 6 reveal polarized covalent U═C double bonds in each case whose nature is significantly affected by the oxidation state of uranium. Natural Bond Order analyses indicate that upon oxidation from uranium(IV) to (V) to (VI) the uranium contribution to the U═C σ-bond can increase from ca. 18 to 32% and within this component the orbital composition is dominated by 5f character. For the corresponding U═C π-components, the uranium contribution increases from ca. 18 to 26% but then decreases to ca. 24% and is again dominated by 5f contributions. The calculations suggest that as a function of increasing oxidation state of uranium the radial contraction of the valence 5f and 6d orbitals of uranium may outweigh the increased polarizing power of uranium in 6 compared to 5.
