Structures and magnetism of two novel heptanuclear lanthanide-centered trigonal prismatic clusters: [LnCu6(mu 3-OH)3(HL)2(L)4](ClO4)2.25H2O (Ln = La, Tb; H2L = iminodiacetic acid)

Synthesis and characterization of a series of novel heptanuclear trigonal-prismatic polyhedra with different edge-ligands

Five novel heptanuclear trigonal-prismatic polyhedra, Na4[PrNi6(Gly)9(mu 3-OH)3(H2O)6].(ClO4)7 (1), Na2[PrNi6(Gly)8(mu 3-OH)3(mu 2-OH2)-(H2O)6].(ClO4)6.(H2O)2 (2), Na[DyNi6(Gly)7(mu 3-OH)3(mu 2-OH2)2(H2O)6].(ClO4)6.H2O (3), [SmNi6(Gly)6-(mu 3-OH)3Cl3(H2O)6].Cl3.(H2O)9 (4), and [ErNi6(Gly)6(mu 3-OH)3Cl3(H2O)6].Cl3.(H2O)9 (5), were synthesized through self-assembly and characterized by X-ray structure analysis. Complex 1 crystallizes in the trigonal P3 space group (a = b = 18.1121(2), c = 11.987(0) A, and Z = 2). Complex 2 belongs to the triclinic P1 space group (a = 16.0145(3), b = 20.58650(10), c = 20.8452(3) A, alpha = 78.0590(10), beta = 67.9200(10), gamma = 68.1540(10) degrees, and Z = 4). Complex 3 belongs to the monoclinic P2(1)/m space group (a = 14.9863(3), b = 13.533, c = 15.6171(3) A, beta = 116.8970(10) degrees, and Z = 2). Complexes 4 and 5 are isomorphous (4: trigonal, P3; a = b = 11.8661(4), c = 18.2034(10) A, Z = 2; 5: a = b = 11.9001(5), c = 18.1229(11) A, Z = 2). A Ln3+ ion is in the center of the prism formed by six nickel atoms. It coordinates to nine oxygen atoms. Its coordination polyhedron may be best described as a tricapped trigonal prism. The five complexes all have a core of [LnNi6(Gly)6-(mu 3-OH)3(H2O)6]6+ and were obtained through the edge-ligand exchange of the three mu 2-OH2 ligands of [LnNi6(Gly)6-(mu 3-OH)3(H2O)6(mu 2-OH2)3]6+ partly or wholly by glycine or Cl-. Magnetic measurements reveal that 1 and 4 exhibit antiferromagnetic interaction, while 5 exhibits a ferromagnetic interaction.

Dinuclear (Fe(II), Gd(III)) complexes deriving from hexadentate Schiff bases: synthesis, structure, and Mössbauer and magnetic properties

The dinuclear (Fe(II), Gd(III)) complexes studied in this report derive from hexadentate Schiff base ligands abbreviated H(2)L(i)() (i = 1, 2, 3). H(2)L(1) = N,N'-bis(3-methoxysalicylidene)-1,3-diamino-2,2'-dimethyl-propane, H(2)L(2) = N,N'-bis(3-methoxysalicylidene)-1,2-diamino-2-methylpropane, and H(2)L(3) = N,N'-bis(3-methoxysalicylidene)-1,2-diaminoethane. The crystal and molecular structures of three complexes have been determined at 160 K. Depending on the solvent used in the preparation, L(1)Fe(CH(3)OH)Gd(NO(3))(3)(CH(3)OH)(2), 1, or L(1)Fe((CH(3))(2)CO)Gd(NO(3))(3), 1', is obtained from H(2)L(1). A similar complex, L(2)Fe((CH(3))(2)CO)Gd(NO(3))(3), 2, is obtained from H(2)L(2). Complex 1 crystallizes in the orthorhombic space group Pca2(1) (No. 29): a = 22.141(3) A, b = 9.4159(16) A, c = 15.2075(17) A, V = 3170.4(7) A(3), Z = 4. Complexes 1' and 2 crystallize in the monoclinic space group P2(1)/c (No. 14): 1', a = 9.6264(17) A, b = 19.662(3) A, c = 16.039(3) A, beta = 95.15(2) degrees, V = 3023.6(9) A(3), Z = 4; 2, a = 9.7821(13) A, b = 18.7725(17) A, c = 16.100(2) A, beta = 96.497(16) degrees, V = 2937.5(6) A(3), Z = 4. Complexes 1, 1', and 2 possess an Fe(O(phenoxo))(2-)Gd core. The mononuclear L(3)Fe complex could be prepared from H(2)L(3) but not the related dinuclear (Fe, Gd) species. Mössbauer spectroscopy evidences that the iron center is in the +2 oxidation state for the six complexes. The experimental magnetic susceptibility and magnetization data of complexes 1, 1', and 2 indicate the occurrence of weak Fe(II)-Gd(III) ferromagnetic interactions. Single ion zero-field splitting of the iron(II) must be taken into account for satisfactorily fitting the data by exact calculation of the energy levels associated to the spin Hamiltonian through diagonalization of the full matrix for axial symmetry (1, J = 0.50 cm(-1), D = 2.06 cm(-1); 1', J = 0.41 cm(-1), D = 3.22 cm(-1); 2, J = 0.08 cm(-1), D = 4.43 cm(-1)).

Syntheses, X-ray crystal structures, and magnetic properties of novel linear M2[II]U[IV] complexes (M=Co, Ni, Cu, Zn)

Attempts to prepare heterobimetallic complexes in which 3d and uranium magnetic ions are associated by means of the Schiff bases H(2)L(i) derived from 2-hydroxybenzaldehyde or 2-hydroxy-3-methoxybenzaldehyde were unsuccessful because of ligand transfer reactions between [ML(i)] (M=Co, Ni, Cu) and UCl(4) that led to the mononuclear Schiff base complexes of uranium [UL(i)Cl(2)]. The crystal structure of [UL(3)Cl(2)(py)(2)] [L(3)=N,N'-bis(3-methoxysalicylidene)-ethylenediamine; py=pyridine] was determined. The hexadentate Schiff base ligand N,N'-bis(3-hydroxysalicylidene)-2,2-dimethyl-1,3-propanediamine (L) was useful for the synthesis of novel trinuclear complexes of the general formula [[ML(py)](2)U] (M=Co, Ni, Zn) or [[CuL(py)]M'[CuL]] (M'=U, Th, Zr) by reaction of [M(H(2)L)] with [M'(acac)(4)] (acac=MeCOCHCOMe). The crystal structures of the Co(2)U, Ni(2)U, Zn(2)U, Cu(2)U, and Cu(2)Th complexes show that the two ML fragments are orthogonal, being linked to the central actinide ion by the two pairs of oxygen atoms of the Schiff base ligand. In each compound, the UO(8) core exhibits the same dodecahedral geometry, and the three metals are linear. The magnetic study indicated that the two Cu(2+) ions are not coupled in the Cu(2)Zr and Cu(2)Th compounds. The magnetic behavior of the Co(2)U, Ni(2)U, and Cu(2)U complexes was compared with that of the Zn(2)U derivative, in which the paramagnetic 3d ion was replaced with the diamagnetic Zn(2+) ion. A weak antiferromagnetic coupling was observed between the Ni(2+) and the U(4+) ions, while a ferromagnetic interaction was revealed between the Cu(2+) and U(4+) ions.

Preparations, structures, and magnetic properties of a series of novel copper(II)-lanthanide(III) coordination polymers via hydrothermal reaction

The hydrothermal reaction of Ln2O3 (Ln = Er, Gd, and Sm), pyridine-2,5-dicarboxylic acid (H2pydc), and Cu(II) reagents (CuO, Cu(OAc)2-2H2O, or CuCl2-2H2O) with a mole ratio of 1:2:4 resulted in the formation of six polymeric Cu(II)-Ln(III) complexes, [(Ln2Cu3(pydc)6(H2O)12)-4H2O]n (Ln = Er (1); Ln = Gd (2)), [(Ln4Cu2(pydc)8(H2O)12)-4H2O]n (Ln = Sm (3); Ln = Gd (4); Ln = Er (5)), and [(Gd2Cu2(pydc)4(H2O)8)-Cu(pydc)2-12H2O]n (6). 1 and 2 are isomorphous and crystallize in triclinic space group Ponebar. Compounds 3-5 are isomorphous and crystallize in monoclinic space group P2(1)/c. Compound 6 crystallizes in triclinic space group Ponebar. Complexes 1 and 2 have one-dimensional zigzag chain structures and compounds 3-5 display three-dimensional wavelike polymeric structures, while 6 has an infinite sandwich-type structure. The different structures of the complexes are induced by the different forms of Cu(II) reagents; the reactions of Cu(OAc)2-2H2O yield high Cu/Ln ratio products 1, 2, and 6, while the reactions of CuO or CuCl2-2H2O/2,2'-bipyridine results in low Cu/Ln ratio compounds 3-5. Temperature-dependent magnetic susceptibilities for 2, 4, and 5 were studied, and the thermal stabilities of complexes 2 and 4 were examined.
