Three-dimensional framework constructed using nanometer-sized metallamacrocycle as a secondary building unit

High-Dimensional Assembly Depending on Polyoxoanion Templates, Metal Ion Coordination Geometries, and a Flexible Bis(imidazole) Ligand

By introducing the flexible 1,1'-(1,4-butanediyl)bis(imidazole) (bbi) ligand into the polyoxovanadate system, five novel polyoxoanion-templated architectures based on [As(8)V(14)O(42)](4-) and [V(16)O(38)Cl](6-) building blocks were obtained: [M(bbi)(2)](2)[As(8)V(14)O(42)(H(2)O)] [M = Co (1), Ni (2), and Zn (3)], [Cu(bbi)](4)[As(8)V(14)O(42)(H(2)O)] (4), and [Cu(bbi)](6)[V(16)O(38)Cl] (5). Compounds 1-3 are isostructural, and they exhibit a binodal (4,6)-connected 2D structure with Schläfli symbol (3(4) x 4(2))(3(4) x 4(4) x 5(4) x 6(3))(2), in which the polyoxoanion induces a closed four-membered circuit of M(4)(bbi)(4). Compound 4 exhibits an interesting 3D framework constructed from tetradentate [As(8)V(14)O(42)](4-) cluster anions and cationic ladderlike double chains. There exists a bigger M(8)(bbi)(6)O(2) circuit in 4. The 3D extended structure of 5 is composed of heptadentate [V(16)O(38)Cl](6-) anions and flexural cationic chains; the latter consists of six Cu(bbi) segments arranged alternately. It presents the largest 24-membered circuit of M(24)(bbi)(24) so far observed made of bbi molecules and transition-metal cations. Investigation of their structural relations shows the important template role of the polyoxoanions and the synergetic interactions among the polyoxoanions, transition-metal ions, and flexible ligand in the assembly process. The magnetic properties of compounds 1-3 were also studied.

Steric Control of a Bridging Ligand for High-Nuclearity Metallamacrocycle Formation: A Highly Puckered 60-Membered Icosanuclear Metalladiazamacrocycle

A novel S4-symmetric icosanuclear manganese metalladiazamacrocycle was synthesized using a pentadentate ligand, N-3-phenyl-trans-2-propenoylsalicylhydrazide (H3L), that has a rigid and bulky terminal N-acyl group. A 20 cyclic repeat of an--(Mn-N-N)--linkage resulted in a highly puckered diaza-bridged 60-membered icosanuclear metallamacrocycle. The steric interaction between the ligands in the cyclic system leads to five consecutive Mn(III) centers in a chemically different--(Mn(A)Mn(B)Mn(C)Mn(D)Mn(E))--environment, with the chiralities of the metal centers being in a rather complicated--(LambdaLambdaDeltaLambdaLambda)(DeltaDeltaLambdaDeltaDelta)--sequence.

Encapsulation of a guest molecule in a strained form: an extended 36-membered dodecanuclear manganese metallamacrocycle that accommodates a cyclooctane in the S4 symmetry conformation

An extended 36-membered dodecanuclear manganese metallamacrocycle with S12 symmetry has been synthesized using the ligand N-cyclohexanoylsalicylhydrazide (H3chxshz) by a self-assembly that accommodates a cyclooctane of conformationally strained S4 symmetry in its hydrophobic cavity.

Modulation of the Ring Size and Nuclearity of Metallamacrocycles via the Steric Effect of Ligands: Preparation and Characterization of 18-Membered Hexanuclear, 24-Membered Octanuclear, and 30-Membered Decanuclear Manganese Metalladiazamacrocycles with α- and β-Branched N-Acylsalicylhydrazides

Hexanuclear, octanuclear, and decanuclear manganese metalladiazamacrocycles have been prepared by reacting a series of pentadentate ligands, N-acylsalicylhydrazides (N-(3-methylbutanoyl)salicylhydrazide (H(3)3-mbshz), N-(phenylacetyl)salicylhydrazide (H(3)pashz), N-(3,3-dimethylbutanoyl)salicylhydrazide (H(3)3-dmbshz), N-(2-methylpropanoyl)salicylhydrazide (H(3)2-mpshz), N-((R,S)-2-methylbutanoyl)salicylhydrazide (H(3)RS-2-mbshz), N-((S)-2-methylbutanoyl)salicylhydrazide (H(3)S-2-mbshz), and N-(2,2-dimethylpropanoyl)salicylhydrazide (H(3)2-dmpshz)), with manganese(II) acetate tetrahydrate. The self-assembled, supramolecular complexes assume a nearly planar cyclic structure with an -(Mn-N-N)(n) backbone and measure approximately 2.1, approximately 2.3, and approximately 2.6 nm in outer diameters for n = 6, 8, and 10, respectively. The chiralities of the manganese centers on the metalladiazamacrocycle occur in alternating ...LambdaDeltaLambdaDelta... configurations. While beta-branched N-acylsalicylhydrazides (H(3)3-mbshz, H(3)pashz, H(3)3-dmbshz) with a sterically flexible Calpha methylene group yield 18-membered hexanuclear manganese metalladiazamacrocycles of S(6) point group symmetry, alpha-branched N-acylsalicylhydrazides lead to 24-membered octanuclear manganese metalladiazamacrocycles or 30-membered decanuclear manganese metalladiazamacrocycles depending on the size of the N-acyl substituents. The alpha-branched H(3)2-mpshz ligand with the sterically least demanding isopropyl tail at the N-acyl position yields a 24-membered octanuclear manganese metalladiazamacrocycle of S(8) point group symmetry, but other alpha-branched N-acylsalicylhydrazides such as H(3)RS-2-mbshz, H(3)S-2-mbshz, and H(3)2-dmpshz lead to 30-membered decanuclear manganese metalladiazamacrocycles of S(10) point group symmetry. The magnetic properties of the metalladiazamacrocycles are characterized by a weak antiferromagnetic exchange interaction, with J(eff) = -8.5 to -3.8 K between the Mn(3+) ion spins with S = 2 in the cyclic system.

Metallacryptate Single-Molecule Magnets: Effect of Lower Molecular Symmetry on Blocking Temperature

The structural characterization of complexes [Mn(II)4Mn(III)22(pdol)12(OCH3)12(O)16(N3)6] (1) and [Mn(II)4Mn(III)22(pdol)12(OCH3)12(O)16(OH)2(H3O)(OCH3)3].ClO4.5CH3OH (2), where pdol(2-) is di-2-pyridyl methanediol, reveals that each has a metallacryptand shell that encapsulates a manganese oxide core. Variable-temperature direct current magnetic susceptibility measurements on 2 indicate a paramagnetic ground state that results from an overall antiferromagnetic interaction in the cluster, with chiT values decreasing from 300 K (51.2 cm3 K mol(-1)) to 2 K (19.8 cm3 K mol(-1)). Variable-temperature alternating current magnetic susceptibility measurements imply that both 1 and 2 behave as single-molecule magnets. Fitting the frequency-dependent out-of-phase magnetic susceptibility to the Arrhenius equation yields an effective energy barrier, Ueff, to magnetization relaxation of 16.5 +/- 0.7 K (11.5 +/- 0.5 cm(-1)) for 1 and 36.2 +/- 2.0 K (25.1 +/- 1.4 cm(-1)) for 2. The larger value for 2 is in agreement with the lower molecular symmetry, larger magnetoanisotropy, and higher ground spin state of 2 compared to those of 1. This observation suggests a new strategy for increasing the blocking temperatures in high-nuclearity manganese clusters.

Size and Shape Selectivity of Host Networks Built Based on Tunable Secondary Building Units

By modulating the secondary building units derived from the primary building units, N-acylsalicylhydrazides (H3 xshz), we have been able to construct isostructural but tunable host networks, [Mn6(xshz)6(dmf)2(bpea)2], with different cavity sizes and shapes where the secondary building units, [Mn6(xshz)6], were linked through exo-bidentate bridging ligand, 1,2-bis(pyridyl)ethane (bpea) to form 3-D networks. With a short length linear N-acyl side chain at the primary building unit, the host networks have a 3-D network with three-dimensional cavities. With an appropriate length linear N-acyl side chain at the primary building unit, the host network keeps the isostructural 3-D network but with two types of one-dimensional channels of reduced cavity volume. The tuned host networks showed not only size selectivity for the guest molecules but also shape selectivity. While the three-dimensional channeled host showed selectivity depending on the length of the podal guests, the one-dimensional channeled host showed selectivity depending on both the length and/or the podality of the guest molecules.

Formation of [2 + 2] diruthenium(ii) metallomacrocycles from ligands containing 2,2′:6′,2″-terpyridine domains linked through flexible polyethyleneoxy spacers

The syntheses of three ligands containing two terpy metal-binding domains linked through flexible polyethyleneoxy spacers are described. These ligands have been utilised as building blocks in a two-step process for the formation of a series of dinuclear ruthenium(II) metallomacrocycles of the type [Ru2L2]4+. Employing a two-step methodology allows the formation of homoleptic ([Ru2L2]4+) and heteroleptic ([Ru2LL']4+) species in which the ligands differ in the length of the polyethyleneoxy spacer connecting each terpy motif. Homoleptic metallomacrocycles have been characterised through single crystal X-ray diffraction studies, while 2D-NMR spectroscopy has been employed for the characterisation of the heteroleptic species.

Supramolecular isomerism within three-dimensional 3-connected nets: unusual synthesis and characterization of trimorphic copper(i) 3,5-dimethyl-1,2,4-triazolate

Solvothermal treatments of acetonitrile, aqueous ammonia and copper(II) salts frequently yielded alpha-[Cu(mtz)](1)(Hmtz = 3,5-dimethyl-1,2,4-triazole) under different reaction conditions. However, two new supramolecular isomers of 1, namely beta-[Cu(mtz)](2) and gamma-[Cu(mtz)](3) were successfully isolated upon introducing 4,4'-bipyridine or nitrate as an additive. 1-3 represent the first example of true supramolecular isomerism within 3D 3-connected nets. Besides the 4.8.10 net for the tetragonal phase 1 (P4(2)/n, a= 13.470(2), c= 6.142(2)A), two novel 3-connected nets, 8(2)10-a and 6.10(2), were observed in the new tetragonal phase 2 (I42d, a= 14.0247(5), c= 5.2884(4)A) and orthorhombic phase 3 (Iba2, a= 8.0423(7), b= 11.5310(10), c= 17.3505(16)A), respectively. The three isomers also displayed distinct physical properties related to their different supramolecular structures.

Direction of topological isomers of silver(i) coordination polymers induced by solvent, and selective anion-exchange of a class of PtS-type host frameworks

The construction of two types of coordination polymers with closely related 4-connected topologies [PtS and lvt (4(2).8(4))] were achieved based on a well-designed bent dipyrazine linker, and the topological differences only result from the stereochemistry of silver(I) coordination sphere with the same coordination donors. Selective anion-exchange functions of the series of PtS-type coordination networks containing different counter anions (from small BF4- to very large SbF6-) were identified.

Three-Dimensional Helical Coordination Networks of a Hexanuclear Manganese Metallamacrocycle as a Helical Tecton

We report on helical coordination networks that were prepared using a hexanuclear manganese metallamacrocycle as a helical tecton. We were able to prepare the three-dimensional helical coordination networks using a hexanuclear manganese metallamacrocycle, [Mn(6)(lshz)(6)], as a helical tecton, where N-lauroyl salicylhydrazide (H(3)lshz) was used as the primary building unit to generate the helical tecton as a secondary building unit. While the 4(1)/4(3) screw symmetry-linked helical coordination network was obtained when the primary building units had an N-acetyl group, both the 3(1)/3(2) screw symmetry-linked and the 4(1)/4(3) screw symmetry-linked helical coordination networks were obtained simultaneously in the same batch when the primary building unit had a long alkyl N-lauroyl group at the N-acetyl site.

Synthesis, Structure, and Magnetism of a Ferric 24-Azametallacrown-8 Complex

A new pentadentate N-isobutyrylsalicylhydrazidate ligand (H(3)ibushz, C(11)H(14)N(2)O(3)) and a self-assembly synthesis of the first 24-azametallacrown-8, [Fe(8)(C(11)H(11)N(2)O(3))(8)(CH(3)OH)(8)].0.5CH(2)Cl(2).7.5CH(3)OH.3.5H(2)O, have been reported. Eight Fe(III) ions and eight deprotonated ibushz(3)(-) ligands construct a planar 24-membered ring based on the M-N-N-M linkage. The chiralities of the iron atoms on the 24-azametallacrown-8 ring alternate between the Lambda and Delta forms. The title octanuclear azametallacrown has no crystallographic centrosymmetry, while all the known metallacrowns and azametallacrowns with an even nuclear number have crystallographic centrosymmetry. The study of (1)H NMR spectra suggests that the title compound retains its metallacrown structure in solution at room temperature over a period of at least three months. There exists a strong antiferromagnetic exchange interaction between the iron paramagnetic centers.

Nature of the reactants and influence of water on the supramolecular assembly

The influences of the nature of reactants and water on the self-assembly of cationic Cu(II) complex structures containing N-(2-pyridylmethyl)glycine (Hpgly) and N-(2-pyridylmethyl)-l-alanine (Hpala) ligands have been investigated. A metallamacrocycle [Cu(6)(pgly)(3)(spgly)(3)] (ClO(4))(6).9H(2)O has been formed by the reaction of [Cu(pgly)(2)].2H(2)O with Cu(ClO(4))(2).6H(2)O. The hexameric cation has Schiff base and reduced Schiff base ligands alternatively bonded to Cu(II) to provide cyclohexane-like conformation with a cavity diameter of 9.4 A. The reaction of Cu(ClO(4))(2).6H(2)O with Hpgly.HCl yielded [Cu(pgly)(H(2)O)](ClO(4)), which is presumed to have 1D coordination polymeric structure. A [K subset [12-MC-3]] metallacrown, [K(ClO(4))(3)[Cu(3)(pala)(3)]](ClO(4)) has been isolated by reacting Cu(ClO(4))(2) with Kpala in MeCN/MeOH. This [K subset [12-MC-3]] metallacrown further reacts with water to form an infinite 1D coordination polymer [Cu(pala)(H(2)O)(ClO(4))](n)(), which can also be obtained by conducting the reaction in aqueous MeOH.

Self-assembled dinuclear, trinuclear, tetranuclear, pentanuclear, and octanuclear Ni(II) complexes of a series of polytopic diazine based ligands: structural and magnetic properties

The nickel coordination chemistry of a series of polytopic diazine (N-N) based ligands has been examined. Self-assembly reactions lead to examples of dinuclear, trinuclear, tetranuclear, pentanuclear, and octanuclear complexes, all of which exhibit magnetic exchange coupling, with antiferromagnetic and ferromagnetic examples. Structural details are presented for [(L1)(2)Ni(2)(H(2)O)(2)](NO(3))(4).3H(2)O (1), [(L2)(2)Ni(3)(H(2)O)(2)](NO(3))(6).8H(2)O (2), [(L3)(4)Ni(4)(H(2)O)(8)] (NO(3))(4).8H(2)O (3), [(L4)(2)Ni(5)(H(2)O)(10)(NO(3))](NO(3))(7).8H(2)O (4), and [(L5)(4)Ni(8)(H(2)O)(8)](BF(4))(8).16H(2)O (5). Compound 1 crystallizes in the monoclinic system, space group P2(1)/c, with a = 14.937(1) A, b = 18.612(2) A, c = 20.583(2) A, beta = 108.862(2) degrees, Z = 4. Compound 2 crystallizes in the orthorhombic system, space group P2(1)2(1)2, with a = 21.771(4) A, b = 13.700(2) A, c = 20.017(3) A, Z = 4. Compound 3 crystallizes in the tetragonal system, space group P4(3), with a = 12.9483(7) A, c = 33.416(3) A, Z = 4. Compound 4 crystallizes in the triclinic system, space group P(-)1, with a = 12.6677(8) A, b = 18.110(1) A, c = 19.998(1) A, alpha = 100.395(1) degrees, beta = 109.514(1) degrees, gamma = 109.686(1) degrees, Z = 2. Compound 5 crystallizes in the monoclinic system, space group P2(1)/n, with a = 21.153(5) A, b = 35.778(9) A, c = 21.823(5) A, beta = 97.757(6) degrees, Z = 4. The linear trinuclear Ni(II) complex (2) has a cis-N-N single bond bridge, and a water bridge linking the central Ni(II) to each external Ni(II) center in each of two similar trinuclear subunits, and exhibits intramolecular ferromagnetic exchange (J = 5.0 cm(-1)). A novel octanuclear metallacyclic ring structure exists in 5, with trans-N-N single bond bridges linking adjacent Ni(II) centers, leading to quite strong intramolecular antiferromagnetic exchange (J = -30.4 cm(-1)).

Cation control of pore and channel size in cage-based metal-organic porous materials

Porous materials resembling zeolites that are composed of organic and inorganic building units were synthesized and characterized. Control of pore and channel size was achieved by using different-sized cations. The metal-assembled, anionic cage molecule, Co(4)1(2)(8-), with a hydrophobic cavity and four carboxylate rich arms, was used as a structural unit for the formation of materials with pores and channels. When assembled into a solid material with dications (Mg(2+), Ca(2+), Sr(2+), and Ba(2+)), Co(4)1(2)(8-) arranges into sheets of cages linked together by cations. The series of materials based on Co(4)1(2)(8-) and containing alkaline earth cations was characterized using X-ray crystallography. The magnesium material packs with cages close together, has small channels, and has cation-carboxylate linkages in three dimensions. The calcium material has cages packed with voids between them and has 5 x 10 A channels and 10 x 21 A pores. The strontium and barium materials also pack with voids between the cages and similarly to each other. They have 11 x 13 A and 11 x 11 A channels and 10 x 27 A and 9 x 27 A pores, respectively. Each of these materials has many (20-50) solvent water molecules associated with each cage. The associated water can be removed from and adsorbed by the materials. The heat of water binding has been measured to be -52 kJ/mol (Mg(4)Co(4)1(2)); -47 kJ/mol (Ca(4)Co(4)1(2)); -48 kJ/mol (Sr(4)Co(4)1(2)); -49 kJ/mol (Ba(4)Co(4)1(2)).

A novel, tunable manganese coordination system based on a flexible "spacer" unit: noncovalent templation effects

The reaction of bis(hexafluoroacetylacetonato)manganese(II) trihydrate (2), an approximately 90 degrees corner unit, with flexible linking unit 4,4'-trimethylenedipyridine (1) allows for the potential formation of three different types of solid-state coordination species: infinite helical polymers, closed dimeric systems, and infinite one-dimensional polymers. While the un-templated starting material is known to give a coordination helix, the other two possible species can be realized through the selective use of a variety of simple, organic guests: toluene (3), diphenylmethane (4), cis-stilbene (5), 1,3-diphenylpropane (6), benzyl alcohol (7), nitrobenzene (8), and cyanobenzene (9). When solutions of 1 and 2 are crystallized in the presence of all of these clathrates, the dimeric macrocycles result in all cases, except for that of 6, in which a syndiotactic, wedge-shaped polymer forms. Employing a linker that is less rigid than is typically used in crystal engineering, such as 1, enables the nucleophilic donor subunit to be more than just a simple "spacer", instead making it an essential, tunable component in the overall crystal lattice. In so doing, a great deal of molecular "information" is lost, but this is compensated for by an in-depth investigation into the weaker host-guest and/or guest-guest interactions, such as nonclassical hydrogen bonding and an assortment of hydrophobic interactions, present in the various systems.
