Abstract
Substituted azulenes, valuable structures for electronic devices and pharmaceuticals, have been synthesized by the platinum(II)-catalyzed intramolecular ring-expanding cycloisomerization of 1-en-3-yne with ortho-disubstituted benzene. This novel method provides an alternative route for the efficient synthesis of substituted azulenes. The reaction mechanism of selected catalytic transformations was explored using density functional calculations.

Abstract
A method for the synthesis of bicyclo[4.1.0]heptenes from 1,6-enynes through Pd-catalyzed cycloisomerization has been developed. N- and O-tethered 1,6-enynes were successfully transformed to their corresponding 3-aza- and 3-oxabicyclo[4.1.0]heptenes in reasonable-to-high yields using the catalysts [PdCl2(CH3CN)2]/P(OPh)3 or [Pd(maleimidate)2(PPh3)2] in toluene. The computational calculations using density functional theory indicate that [PdCl2{P(OPh)3}] in the oxidation state Pd(II) acts as the active catalyst species for the formation of 3-azabicyclo[4.1.0]heptenes through 6-endo-dig cyclization.

Abstract
Over the last two decades, electrophilic catalysis relying on platinum(II), gold(I), and gold(III) salts has emerged as a remarkable synthetic methodology. Chemists have discovered a large variety of organic transformations that convert a great assortment of highly functionalized precursors into valuable final products. In many cases, these methodologies offer unique features, allowing access to unprecedented molecular architectures. Due to the mild reaction conditions and high function compatibility, scientists have successfully developed applications in total synthesis of natural products, as well as in asymmetric catalysis. In addition, all these developments have been accompanied by the invention of well-tailored catalysts, so that a palette of different electrophilic agents is now commercially available or readily synthesized at the bench. In some respects, researchers' interests in developing homogeneous gold catalysis can be compared with the Californian gold rush of the 19th century. It has attracted into its fervor thousands of scientists, providing a huge number of versatile and important reports. More notably, it is clear that the contribution to the art of organic synthesis is very valuable, though the quest is not over yet. Because they rely on the intervention of previously unknown types of intermediates, new retrosynthetic disconnections are now possible. In this Account, we discuss our efforts on the use of readily available polyunsaturated precursors, such as enynes, dienynes, allenynes, and allenenes to give access to highly original polycyclic structures in a single operation. These transformations transit via previously undescribed intermediates A, B, D, F, and H that will be encountered later on. All these intermediates have been determined by both ourselves and others by DFT calculations and in some cases have been confirmed on the basis of experimental data. In addition, dual gold activation can be at work in some of these transformations, for instance, from E to F. Strikingly, we have found propargyl acetates to be particularly productive precursors. In a preliminary step upon electrophilic activation (complex I), they can lead to oxonium J or a vinylcarbenoid species K after 1,2-migration or complexed allenylester M from a formal 1,3-migration. All of them can serve as versatile entries for multievent processes. The propargyl cycle, sometimes called the golden carousel, involves species I-N), which lie in a close equilibrium. The control of this merry-go-round and its offshoots depends on the energy barriers associated with the subsequent reactions of these intermediates. We illustrate these themes in this Account, focusing on the intriguing characteristics of gold catalysis.

Abstract
1,6-Enynes with electron-donating substituents at the alkyne undergo gold(I)-catalysed single cleavage skeletal rearrangement, whereas substrates with electron-withdrawing substituents evolve selectively to double cleavage rearrangement. Theoretical calculations provide a qualitative rationale for these effects, and suggest that bicyclo[3.2.0]hept-5-enes are involved as intermediates. We provide the first X-ray structural evidence for the formation of a product of this class in a cycloisomerisation of a 1,6-enyne.

Abstract
Enantioenriched bicyclo[4.1.0]hept-2-enes were synthesized by Ir(I)-catalyzed carbocyclization of 1,6-enynes. No chiral ligands were used, CO and PPh(3) were the only ligands bound to iridium. Instead, the stereochemical information was localized on the counterion of the catalyst, generated in situ by reaction of Vaska's complex (trans-[IrCl(CO)(PPh(3))(2)]) with a chiral silver phosphate. Enantiomeric excesses up to 93% were obtained when this catalytic mixture was used. (31)P NMR and IR spectroscopy suggest that formation of the trans- [Ir(CO)(PPh(3))(2)](+) moiety occurs by chlorine abstraction. Moreover, density functional theory calculations support a 6-endo-dig cyclization promoted by this cationic moiety. The chiral phosphate anion (O-P*) controls the enantioselectivity through formation of a loose ion pair with the metal center and establishes a C-H···O-P* hydrogen bond with the substrate. This is a rare example of asymmetric counterion-directed transition-metal catalysis and represents the first application of such a strategy to a C-C bond-forming reaction.

Abstract
A comprehensive study on the asymmetric gold-catalyzed cycloisomerization reaction of heteroatom tethered 1,6-enynes is described. The cycloisomerization reactions were conducted in the presence of the chiral cationic Au(I) catalyst consisting of (R)-4-MeO-3,5-(t-Bu)(2)-MeOBIPHEP-(AuCl)(2) complex and silver salts (AgOTf or AgNTf(2)) in toluene under mild conditions to afford functionalized bicyclo[4.1.0]heptene derivatives. The reaction conditions were found to be highly substrate-dependent, the best results being obtained in the case of oxygen-tethered enynes. The formation of bicyclic derivatives, including cyclopropyl pentasubstituted ones, was reported in moderate to good yields and in enantiomeric excesses up to 99%.

Abstract
Reaction of the ruthenium acetylide complex Cp(dppe)RuC≡CCH(OMe)CPh(2)-CH(2)CH=CMe(2) (5a) with oxygen readily gives acetone and the acyl complex 6 in almost quantitative yield. Protonation of 5a is followed by an elimination of MeOH and a hydroxyl addition at Cα in the presence of water to give the hydroxycarbene complex 7a. The structures of the acyl complex 6 and the hydroxycarbene complex 7c are fully characterized by single crystal X-ray diffraction analysis.
