Abstract
The Nazarov reaction is an acid-catalyzed 4pi-electrocyclic ring closure of dienylketones, which affords cyclopentenones. This type of cyclization has been increasing in interest over the years, due to the importance of the construction of five-membered rings in the synthesis of natural products. However, one potential problem is that the carbonyl group necessary for the cyclization to occur may not be required in the final synthetic target and can sometimes be difficult to remove or modify. One possible solution is to design analogous reactions which do not suffer the carbonyl dependence.

Abstract
Treatment of an allenyl vinyl ketone with trifluoroacetic acid leads to Nazarov cyclization, and the intermediate carbocation is trapped efficiently by trifluoroacetate. Hydrolysis of the ester with methanol and basic alumina provides, in good to excellent overall yield, a 5-hydroxycyclopent-2-enone in which the alcohol is predominantly trans to a substituent at C-4.

Abstract
The key stereochemical factors that determine transfer of asymmetry from the chiral auxiliary to the cyclopentenone in the allene ether version of the Nazarov reaction have been elucidated. On the basis of the new insights into the mechanism, two highly effective chiral auxiliaries were designed and prepared.

Abstract
A carbon-terminated interrupted Nazarov reaction is described. The trimethylsilyl enol ethers derived from propargyl vinyl ketones undergo selective proton transfer at the distal acetylenic carbon atom to provide allenyl vinyl ketones as transient intermediates. In the presence of indoles, a cascade of reactions is initiated that converts the initially formed pentadienyl cations to cyclopentenones bearing a quaternary alpha carbon atom.

Abstract
A series of carbamates, amides, N-tosyl amides, (hetero)arenes, and hydrogen phosphines/phosphites has been examined as nucleophiles for (hetero)Michael-type additions to enones and enamides catalyzed by amphoteric vanadyl triflate under mild and neutral conditions. The newly developed C-N, C-P, and C-C bond-formation protocols were carried out smoothly in good to high yields without intervention of any 1,2-additions.

Abstract
Readily prepared Ni(II)-bis[(R,R)-N,N'-dibenzylcyclohexane-1,2-diamine]Br(2) was shown to catalyze the Michael addition of 1,3-dicarbonyl compounds to nitroalkenes at room temperature in good yields with high enantioselectivities. The two diamine ligands in this system each play a distinct role: one serves as a chiral ligand to provide stereoinduction in the addition step while the other functions as a base for substrate enolization. Ligand modification within the catalyst was also investigated to facilitate the reaction of aliphatic nitroalkenes, 1,3-diketones, and beta-ketoacids. Ni(II)-bis[(R,R)-N,N'-di-p-bromo-benzylcyclohexane-1,2-diamine]Br(2) was found to be an effective catalyst in these instances. Furthermore, monodiamine complex, Ni(II)-[(R,R)-N,N'-dibenzylcyclohexane-1,2-diamine]Br(2), catalyzed the addition reaction in the presence of water. The proposed model for stereochemical induction is shown to be consistent with X-ray structure analysis.

Abstract
Catalytic cyclization of 1,6-allenynes was achieved by AuPPh(3)SbF(6) (5 mol %) in cold CH(2)Cl(2) (0 degrees C, 0.5-4 h) to form bicyclo[4.3.0]nonadiene products; this cyclization proceeded more efficiently for a substrate bearing R = alkyl (yields >70%). We propose a reaction mechanism involving a 6-endo-dig cyclization of Au(I)-pi-alkyne, followed by Nazarov cyclization.

Abstract
A new catalytic stereoselective tandem transformation via Nazarov cyclization/electrophilic fluorination has been accomplished. This sequence is efficiently catalyzed by a Cu(II) complex to afford fluorine-containing 1-indanone derivatives with two new stereocenters with high diastereoselectivity (trans/cis up to 49/1). Three examples of catalytic enantioselective tandem transformation are presented.

Abstract
Cross-conjugated dienones with pendent azide side chains undergo interrupted Nazarov trapping, leading to peroxy-bridged indolizidinones in good yields. This process is proposed to involve skeletal rearrangement of the initial trapping product, with loss of dinitrogen, to give an intermediate 1,4-betaine, which then undergoes reaction with atmospheric oxygen. The endoperoxide products can be reduced under catalytic hydrogenation conditions to furnish alpha-hydroxylactams. [reaction: see text].
