Red-, Blue-, or No-Shift in Hydrogen Bonds: A Unified Explanation

Role of O-H⋯O/S conventional hydrogen bonds in considerable Csp2 -H blue-shift in the binary systems of acetaldehyde and thioacetaldehyde with substituted carboxylic and thiocarboxylic acids

Stable binary complexes of RCZOH⋯CH3CHZ (R = CH3, H, F; Z = O, S) are due to contributions from the O-H⋯O/S and Csp2 -H⋯O/S hydrogen bonds. The strength of Csp2 /O-H⋯O is 1.5 to 2 times greater than that of the Csp2 /O-H⋯S bond. The substitution of H(Csp2 ) of HCZOH by CH3 causes a decrease in complex stability, while the opposite trend occurs for the F atom. A very large red shift of the O-H stretching frequency in O-H⋯O/S bonds was observed. A surprising Csp2 -H blue shift up to 104.5 cm-1 was observed for the first time. It is found that the presence of O-H⋯O/S hydrogen bonds and a decisive role of intramolecular hyperconjugation interactions in the complex cause a significant blue shift of the Csp2 -H covalent bonds. A striking role of O compared to the S atom in determining the blue shift of Csp2 -H stretching vibration and stability of binary complexes is proposed. The obtained results show that the ratio of deprotonation enthalpy and proton affinity could be considered as an index for the classification of the non-conventional hydrogen bond. SAPT2+ results show that the strength of RCSOH⋯CH3CHS complexes is dominated by electrostatic and induction energies, while a larger contribution to the stability of remaining complexes is detected for the electrostatic component.

High Performance Carbon Fiber Structural Batteries Using Cellulose Nanocrystal Reinforced Polymer Electrolyte

In recent years, structural batteries have received great attention for future automotive application in which a load-bearing car panel is used as an energy storage. However, based on the current advances, achieving both high ionic conductivity and mechanical performance has remained a challenge. To address this challenge, this study introduces a cellulose nanocrystal (CNC) reinforced structural battery electrolyte (CSBE) consisting of CNC, triethylene glycol dimethyl ether (TriG) electrolyte containing a quasi-solid additive, e.g., cyclohexanedimethanol (CHDM), in a vinyl ester polymer. This green and renewable CSBE electrolyte system was in situ polymerized via reaction induced phase transition to form a high performance multidimensional channel electrolyte to be used in structural carbon fiber-based battery fabrication. The effect of various concentrations of CNC on the electrolyte ionic conductivity and mechanical properties was obtained in their relation to intermolecular interactions, interpreted by FTIR, Raman, Li NMR results. Compared to the neat SBE system, the optimized CSBE nanocomposite containing 2 wt % CNC shows a remarkable ionic conductivity of 1.1 × 10^-3 S cm^-1 at 30 °C, which reveals ∼300% improvement, alongside higher thermal stability. Based on the FTIR, Raman, Li NMR results, the content of CNC in the CSBE structure plays a crucial role not only in the formation of cellulose network skeleton but also in physical interaction with polymer matrix, providing an efficient Li⁺ pathway through the electrolyte matrix. The carbon fiber composite was fabricated by 2 wt % CNC reinforced SBE electrolyte to evaluate as a battery half-cell. The results demonstrated that by addition of 2 wt % CNC into SBE system, 7.6% and 33.9% improvements were achieved in specific capacity at 0.33 C and tensile strength, respectively, implying outstanding potential of ion conduction and mechanical load transfer between the carbon fibers and the electrolyte.

Manifesting Direction-Specific Complexation in [HFIP-H·H2O2]-: Exclusive Formation of a High-Lying Conformation

Size-selective, negative ion photoelectron spectroscopy in conjunction with quantum chemical calculations is employed to investigate the geometric and electronic structures of a protype system in catalytic olefin epoxidation research, that is, deprotonated hexafluoroisopropanol ([HFIP_-H]^-) complexed with hydrogen peroxide (H₂O₂). Spectral assignments and molecular electrostatic surface analyses unveil a surprising prevalent existence of a high-lying isomer with asymmetric dual hydrogen-bonding configuration that is preferably formed driven by influential direction-specific electrostatic interactions upon H₂O₂ approaching [HFIP_-H]^- anion. Subsequent inspections of molecular orbitals, charge, and spin density distributions indicate the occurrence of partial charge transfer from [HFIP_-H]^- to H₂O₂ upon hydrogen-bonding interactions. Accompanied with electron detachment, a proton transfer occurs to form the neutral complex of [HFIP·HOO^•] structure. This work conspicuously illustrates the importance of directionality encoded in intermolecular interactions involving asymmetric and complex molecules, while the produced hydroperoxyl radical HOO^• offers a possible new pathway in olefin epoxidation chemistry.

Experimental and Computational Study of Novel Pyrazole Azo Dyes as Colored Materials for Light Color Paints

This paper presents the synthesis of eight new pyrazole azo dyes using ethyl 5-amino-3-methyl-1H-pyrazole-4-carboxylate as the diazotization component and various active methylene derivatives as coupling components. These new azo dyes were characterized by spectroscopic (FT-IR, UV-VIS), and spectrometric (¹H NMR, ¹³C NMR, MS) analyses. The dye structures were modeled by the MMFF94s force field and quantum chemical density functional theory (DFT) calculations using the B3LYP functional and the 6-311G(d,p) basis set, in the gas phase. Weak electrostatic hydrogen bonds for the azo and hydrazo dye tautomers were found in the ground state. The CIS, TD (using the B3LYP and M06-2X functionals), and ZINDO methods were used to estimate the dye UV-VIS spectra in ethanol, which were compared with the experimental ones. The anti-configuration arrangement of the π-bonds and the presence of the prevalent hydrazo dye tautomer were supported by the computed ¹H NMR and ¹³C NMR spectra. A good accordance between the experimental and predicted absorption maxima and chemical shifts was observed. Color investigations using the CIEL*a*b* space were conducted for all dyes in powder and for their mixtures in water-based acrylic resins. The results confirm the newly synthesized dyes' color properties and that they might be used for light color paints in the varnishes industry.

Direct photo-oxidation of methane to methanol over a mono-iron hydroxyl site

Natural gas, consisting mainly of methane (CH₄), has a relatively low energy density at ambient conditions (~36 kJ l^-1). Partial oxidation of CH₄ to methanol (CH₃OH) lifts the energy density to ~17 MJ l^-1 and drives the production of numerous chemicals. In nature, this is achieved by methane monooxygenase with di-iron sites, which is extremely challenging to mimic in artificial systems due to the high dissociation energy of the C-H bond in CH₄ (439 kJ mol^-1) and facile over-oxidation of CH₃OH to CO and CO₂. Here we report the direct photo-oxidation of CH₄ over mono-iron hydroxyl sites immobilized within a metal-organic framework, PMOF-RuFe(OH). Under ambient and flow conditions in the presence of H₂O and O₂, CH₄ is converted to CH₃OH with 100% selectivity and a time yield of 8.81 ± 0.34 mmol g_cat^-1 h^-1 (versus 5.05 mmol g_cat^-1 h^-1 for methane monooxygenase). By using operando spectroscopic and modelling techniques, we find that confined mono-iron hydroxyl sites bind CH₄ by forming an [Fe-OH···CH₄] intermediate, thus lowering the barrier for C-H bond activation. The confinement of mono-iron hydroxyl sites in a porous matrix demonstrates a strategy for C-H bond activation in CH₄ to drive the direct photosynthesis of CH₃OH.

Ice-Template Crosslinked PVA Aerogels Modified with Tannic Acid and Sodium Alginate

With the commitment to reducing environmental impact, bio-based and biodegradable aerogels may be one approach when looking for greener solutions with similar attributes to current foam-like materials. This study aimed to enhance the mechanical, thermal, and flame-retardant behavior of poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) aerogels by adding sodium alginate (SA) and tannic acid (TA). Aerogels were obtained by freeze-drying and post-ion crosslinking through calcium chloride (CaCl₂) and boric acid (H₃BO₃) solutions. The incorporation of TA and SA enhanced the PVA aerogel’s mechanical properties, as shown by their high compressive specific moduli, reaching up to a six-fold increase after crosslinking and drying. The PVA/TA/SA aerogels presented a thermal conductivity of 0.043 to 0.046 W/m·K, while crosslinked ones showed higher values (0.049 to 0.060 W/m·K). Under TGA pyrolytic conditions, char layer formation reduced the thermal degradation rate of samples. After crosslinking, a seven-fold decrease in the thermal degradation rate was observed, confirming the high thermal stability of the formed foams. Regarding flammability, aerogels were tested through cone calorimetry. PVA/TA/SA aerogels showed a significant drop in the main parameters, such as the heat release rate (HRR) and the fire growth (FIGRA). The ion crosslinking resulted in a further reduction, confirming the improvement in the fire resistance of the modified compositions.

A novel, highly sensitive electrochemical 1,4-dioxane sensor based on reduced graphene oxide-curcumin nanocomposite

1,4-Dioxane is a carcinogenic, non-biodegradable, organic water pollutant which is used as a solvent in various industries. It is also formed as an undesired by-product in the cosmetic and pharmaceutical industry. Given its carcinogenicity and ability to pollute, it is desirable to develop a sensitive and selective sensor to detect it in drinking water and other water bodies. Current works on this sensor are very few and involve complex metal oxide composite systems. A sensitive electrochemical sensor for 1,4-dioxane was developed by modifying a glassy carbon electrode (GCE) with a reduced graphene oxide–curcumin (rGO–CM) nanocomposite synthesized by a simple solution approach. The prepared rGO–CM was characterized by X-ray Diffraction (XRD), Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) Spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy, UV-Vis spectroscopy, and Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM). The rGO–CM/GCE sensor was employed for the detection of 1,4-dioxane in the range of 0.1–100 μM. Although, the detection range is narrower compared to reported literature, the sensitivity obtained for the proposed sensor is far superior. Moreover, the limit of detection (0.13 μM) is lower than the dioxane detection target defined by the World Health Organization (0.56 μM). The proposed rGO–CM/GCE also showed excellent stability and good recovery values in real sample (tap water and drinking water) analysis.

Reduced graphene oxide–curcumin (rGO–CM) nanocomposite was prepared from graphite oxide using curcumin. The rGO–CM/GCE was used for highly sensitive 1,4-dioxane detection. The LOD obtained (0.13 μM) was lower than the WHO guideline value.

Enhanced Chemical Sensing with Multiorder Coherent Raman Scattering Spectroscopic Dephasing

Molecular vibrational spectroscopy is widely used in various sensing and imaging applications, providing intrinsic information at the molecular level. Nonlinear optical interactions using ultrashort laser pulses facilitate the selective coherent excitation of molecular vibrational modes by focusing energy into specific molecular bonds, boosting the signal level for multiple orders of magnitude. The dephasing of such coherence, which is susceptible to the local molecular environment, however, is often neglected. The unique capability of vibrational dephasing dynamics to serve as a unique probe for complex molecular interactions and the effect of local nano- and microenvironments are beyond the reach of conventional, intensity-based spectroscopy. Here, we developed a novel multiorder coherent Raman spectroscopy platform with a special focus on the temporal evolution of molecular vibrational dephasing, termed as time-resolved coherent Raman scattering (T-CRS) spectroscopy. By utilizing a high dynamic range detection, molecular vibrational dynamics and the environmental effects are demonstrated with multidimensional spectroscopic sensing, which promises a new range of applications in biology, materials, and chemical sciences.

Homogeneous nucleation in polyamide 66, a two-stage process as revealed by combined nanocalorimetry and IR spectroscopy

Nanocalorimetry and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy are combined to measure the calorimetric properties and molecular spectra of the same sample (sample amount about 5 ng) of polyamide 66 (PA66). By determining IR difference absorption spectra between a quenched and a sample annealed at varying temperatures (Ta) and annealing time (ta), the initial steps of homogeneous nucleation is for the first time revealed on a molecular scale, long before crystallization takes place. As starting point (i), isolated H-bonds are formed between (N–H) and (C = O) moieties of adjacent (neighboring) polymer segments promoted by far-reaching dipole–dipole interactions. In the second step (ii), the H-bonds realign, which in part requires the opening of already established H-bonds. In stage (i), the FTIR absorption intensity of the free (C = O)f moieties decreases while that of the H-bonded (C = O)b ones increases as a function of Ta at constant ta. This implies an increase in the H-bonding network in amorphous domains. The second stage of nucleation in the studied PA66 is characterized by an increase in the number of (C = O)f and a corresponding decrease in (C = O)b moieties as the sample transitions to the ordered crystalline structure. This is attributed to a change from γ to α polymorphs in PA66. The non-polar methylene units in PA66 are largely unaffected during the nucleation steps, where no changes in the overall heat capacity are detectable, proving that these changes occur prior to the onset of crystal growth.

High-Pressure Polymorphism in Hydrogen-Bonded Crystals: A Concise Review

High-pressure polymorphism is a developing interdisciplinary field. Pressure up to 20 GPa is a powerful thermodynamic parameter for the study and fabrication of hydrogen-bonded polymorphic systems. This review describes how pressure can be used to explore polymorphism and surveys the reports on examples of compounds that our group has studied at high pressures. Such studies have provided insight into the nature of structure–property relationships, which will enable crystal engineering to design crystals with desired architectures through hydrogen-bonded networks. Experimental methods are also briefly surveyed, along with two methods that have proven to be very helpful in the analysis of high-pressure polymorphs, namely, the ab initio pseudopotential plane–wave density functional method and using Hirshfeld surfaces to construct a graphical overview of intermolecular interactions.

Triboresistive Touch Sensing: Grid-Free Touch-Point Recognition Based on Monolayered Ionic Power Generators

Recent growing pursuit of skin-mountable devices has been impeded by the complicated structures of most sensing systems, containing electrode grids, stacked multilayers, and even external power sources. Here, a type of touch sensing, termed "triboresistive touch sensing", is introduced for gridless touch recognition based on monolayered ionic power generators. A homogeneous monolayer, i.e., ionic poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS), generates electricity based on the electric field generated by touch. Voltages generated at each corner of the ionic PDMS rely on resistance between touch points and each corner, ensuring recognition of the touch positions without the need for electrode grid layers and external power sources. With notable advantages of high transparency (96.5%), stretchability (539.1%), and resilience (99.0%) of the ionic PDMS, epidermal triboresistive sensing is demonstrated to express touch position and readily play a musical instrument. A gridless system of triboresistive sensing allows rearrangement of the touch sections according to a given situation without any physical modification, and thus easily completes consecutive missions of controlling position, orientation, and gripping functions of a robot.

Experimental/Computational Study on the Impact of Fluorine on the Structure and Noncovalent Interactions in the Monohydrated Cluster of ortho-Fluorinated 2-Phenylethylamine

Fluorine-containing medicinal compounds frequently allow modulation of physical-chemical properties. Here, we address the effect of fluorine, near the ethylamino side chain, on conformational flexibility and noncovalent interactions (NCIs) of the selected jet-cooled monohydrated cluster of 2-(2-fluoro-phenyl)-ethylamine (2-FPEA) by mass-selected resonance-enhanced two-photon ionization and ionization-loss stimulated Raman spectroscopies. Our results show that Raman spectral signatures of the 2-FPEA-H₂O cluster match the scaled harmonic vibrational Raman frequencies, resulting from density functional theory calculations of the most stable 2-FPEA gauche conformer hydrogen-bonded (HB) to water, confirming the three-dimensional cluster structure. This predicted electronic structure, together with NCI analysis, allows visualization and assessment of the attractive and repulsive interactions. The comparison of the NCIs and revealed red (O-H and N-H stretches) and blue shifts (C-H stretches and CH₂ out-of-plane bends) of the cluster to other class members confirm O-H···N, N-H···π, C-H···O, and C-H···F HB formation and their contribution to structure stabilization, uncovering the potential of the approach.

Visualization of Solvent-Induced Structure Evolution in Cyclodextrin Polyrotaxane Gels

Cyclodextrin (CD)-based polyrotaxanes (PR) are widely used to construct high-mechanical-performance materials because of the high degree of conformational freedom. However, strong hydrogen bonds between CDs greatly limit the application of CD-PR in the preparation of ductile neutral hydrogels. In this work, spiropyrane (SP) into α-CD-based PR is introduced to "visualize" the segment motion of the network in neutral water. The aggregation-induced cohesion and critical factors for the force transmission are disclosed. This system offers a new approach for the fundamental research for the complicated topologically cross-linked structures, which is important for the design of CD-PR-based biocompatible soft materials.

Carbon-Centered Hydrogen Bonds in Proteins

Hydrogen bonding (H-bonding) without lone pair(s) of electrons and π-electrons is a concept developed 2-3 years ago. H-bonds involving less electronegative tetrahedral carbon are beyond the classical concept of H-bonds. Herein, we present the first report on H-bonds with tetravalent carbons in proteins. A special bonding arrangement is needed to increase the negative charge density around the sp³-hybridized carbon atom. Therefore, less electronegative elements such as As and Mg, when bonded to sp³-C, enable the C-atoms as H-bond acceptors. Careful protein structure analysis aided by several quantum chemical calculations suggests that these H-bonds are weak to moderate in strength. We developed an empirical equation to estimate the C-H···C H-bond energy in proteins from the distances between the C- and H-atoms. In proteins, the binding energies range from -5.4 to -14.0 kJ/mol. The C-H···C H-bonds assist the substrate binding in proteins. We also explored the potential role of these carbon-centered H-bonds in C-H bond activation through σ-bond metathesis. To our surprise, contribution from these H-bonds is almost of similar magnitude as that from C-H···π H-bonds for C-H bond activation.

Reversible ammonia uptake at room temperature in a robust and tunable metal-organic framework

Ammonia is useful for the production of fertilizers and chemicals for modern technology, but its high toxicity and corrosiveness are harmful to the environment and human health. Here, we report the recyclable and tunable ammonia adsorption using a robust imidazolium-based MOF (JCM-1) that uptakes 5.7 mmol g⁻¹ of NH₃ at 298 K reversibly without structural deformation. Furthermore, a simple substitution of NO₃⁻ with Cl⁻ in a post-synthetic manner leads to an increase in the NH₃ uptake capacity of JCM-1(Cl⁻) up to 7.2 mmol g⁻¹.

Recyclable and tunable ammonia adsorption with JCM-1 and JCM-1(Cl⁻) at room temperature occurs reversibly without structural decomposition.

Spectroscopy and radiation-induced chemistry of an atmospherically relevant CH2F2…H2O complex: Evidence for the formation of CF2…H2O complex as revealed by FTIR matrix isolation and ab initio study

Difluoromethane is considered among the environment friendly alternatives to the ozone depleting chlorofluorocarbons. Due to its chemical inertness and lack of UV absorption above 200 nm, this compound can easily come to the upper layers forming complexes with widely abundant atmospheric components, such as water. The radiation-induced degradation of this compound and its complexes may be significant for reliable prediction of its long-term evolution in the environment as well as for development of new ways for its removal. In this work we have studied the vibrational spectroscopic properties and mechanisms of the radiation-induced decay of the CH₂F₂⋯H₂O under the action of X-rays using matrix isolation FTIR spectroscopy and ab initio calculations. The IR spectrum of the complex in an argon matrix was characterized for the first time and assigned to a hydrogen-bonded structure with a binding energy of 11.1 kJ/mol (2.65 kcal/mol) (CCSD(T)/CBS level of theory). Complexation with water leads to a certain suppression of the efficiency of the radiation-induced decomposition of difluoromethane. The obtained results provide evidence for the radiation-induced formation of previously unreported CF₂⋯H₂O complex (in addition to other oxygen containing molecules, such as COF₂ and CO). As demonstrated by calculations, the new difluorocarbene complex reveals a hydrogen bond and it is characterized by a binding energy of 5.73 kJ/mol (1.37 kcal/mol) (CCSD(T)/CBS level of theory).

Fruit waste-derived cellulose and graphene-based aerogels: Plausible adsorption pathways for fast and efficient removal of organic dyes

A wide range of organic pollutants in industrial effluents, agricultural runoff, and domestic discharges are exacerbating water scarcity, leading to water-borne ailments, and adversely affecting the marine ecosystem and biodiversity. The efficient, sustainable, and cost-effective materials need to be addressed urgently for the removal of organic pollutants. Herein, ultra-light (0.018 g.cm^-3) and highly porous (96.4%) composite aerogel is prepared by gelatinization of graphene oxide with fruit waste-derived cellulose. The macroscopic porosity generated by interconnecting cellulosic skeleton and graphene oxide sheets via hydrogen bonding network provided ample avenues for transport and diffusion of organic dyes-enriched wastewater throughout the cellulose-graphene oxide composite aerogel (CGA). Consequently, organic dyes are efficiently adsorbed by easily accessible surface sites distributed throughout the CGA. The size, charge, and chemical structure of organic dyes along with textural features and accessible surface active sites of CGA governed the adsorption process. The spectroscopic analyses based on FTIR, Raman, and XPS measurements suggest electrostatic, n-π, π-π, cation-π interactions, dipole-dipole hydrogen, and Yoshida hydrogen linkages as major interactive pathways for the adsorption of organic dyes by the CGA. Moreover, the composite aerogel furnished an excellent recyclability for the adsorptive removal of organic pollutants from wastewater. The present work promises the potential of 2D nanostructured layered materials and fruit-waste-derived composite aerogels for sustainable utilization in wastewater treatment, which can be an excellent step towards water security.

Intermolecular Interactions and Spectroscopic Signatures of the Hydrogen-Bonded System-n-Octanol in Experimental and Theoretical Studies

n-Octanol is the object of experimental and theoretical study of spectroscopic signatures and intermolecular interactions. The FTIR measurements were carried out at 293 K for n-octanol and its deuterated form. Special attention was paid to the vibrational features associated with the O-H stretching and the isotope effect. Density Functional Theory (DFT) in its classical formulations was applied to develop static models describing intermolecular hydrogen bond (HB) and isotope effect in the gas phase and using solvent reaction field reproduced by Polarizable Continuum Model (PCM). The Atoms in Molecules (AIM) theory enabled electronic structure and molecular topology study. The Symmetry-Adapted Perturbation Theory (SAPT) was used for energy decomposition in the dimers of n-octanol. Finally, time-evolution methods, namely classical molecular dynamics (MD) and Car-Parrinello Molecular Dynamics (CPMD) were employed to shed light onto dynamical nature of liquid n-octanol with emphasis put on metric and vibrational features. As a reference, CPMD gas phase results were applied. Nuclear quantum effects were included using Path Integral Molecular Dynamics (PIMD) and a posteriori method by solving vibrational Schrödinger equation. The latter applied procedure allowed to study the deuterium isotope effect.

High pressure Raman investigation on trans-urocanic acid

Trans-urocanic acid (t-UCA) is an important epidermal UV protector predominantly found in human skin. Exposure of UV radiation triggers photoisomerization of t-UCA into its other conformer, cis-urocanic acid (cis-UCA), which has been shown to be a mediator of UV-induced immune-suppression leading to skin cancer. In this report, we present the investigation of molecular changes of t-UCA under high pressures by in-situ high pressure Raman spectroscopy. The study indicates onset of ring opening polymerization of t-UCA at pressure above 1.4 GPa. At pressures beyond 5 GPa, a well discernible characteristic vibrational mode (CC stretch) accompanied by several other spectral features such as δ CO₂^- and δ NH modes of cis-UCA point towards the isomerization of residual t-UCA monomers into cis-UCA. The content of cis-UCA gradually increased with increase in pressure. On release to ambient conditions, the spectrum of the quenched sample showed Raman modes of polymer and cis-UCA indicating that the changes are irreversible.

In situ analysis of growth rate evolution during molecular layer deposition of ultra-thin polyurea films using aliphatic and aromatic precursors

Organic thin films formed by molecular layer deposition (MLD) are important for next-generation electronics, energy storage, photoresists, protective barriers and other applications. This study uses in situ ellipsometry and quartz crystal microbalance to explore growth initiation and growth rate evolution during MLD of polyurea using aromatic p-phenylene diisocyanate (PDIC) or aliphatic 1,6-hexamethylene diisocyanate (HDIC) combined with ethylenediamine (ED) or 1,6-hexanediamine (HD) co-reactants. During the first 10-20 cycles of growth, we show the growth rate can increase and/or decrease substantially depending on the substrate as well as the flexibility, length, and structure of the isocyanate and amine reactants used. The transition from initial to steady growth is attributed to a change in active surface site density as the growth proceeds, where the number of sites is determined by a balance between steric effects that block active sites, double reactions that consume multiple active sites, and precursor physisorption and sub-surface diffusion that create new active sites, where the extent of each mechanism depends on the precursors and deposition conditions. Promoted formation of stereocomplex in enantiomeric poly(lactic acid)s induced by cellulose nanofibers

Stereocomplex (SC) crystallization between enantiomeric poly(_L-lactic acid) (PLLA) and poly(_D-lactic acid) (PDLA) is believed to yield poly(lactic acid) (PLA) with superior physiochemical properties. However, homocrystallization (HC) crystallites are inevitably generated in the PLLA/PDLA blends. Herein, we report a simple approach to fabricate PLLA/PDLA racemic blends with high contents of SC crystallites by introducing cellulose nanofibers (CNFs). The isothermal crystallization results revealed that the half-crystallization time of the PLLA/PDLA blend was significantly decreased by adding CNFs. Additionally, with the incorporation of 3 wt% modified CNFs, the PLLA/PDLA blend was overwhelmingly crystallized into SC crystallites with no HC crystallite formation. Based on Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy findings, it was speculated that the preferred SC crystallization of PLLA/PDLA/CNF was caused by enhanced interchain molecular interactions between CNFs and PLA. This work presents a feasible and efficient method to fabricate PLA with exclusively SC crystallites, which possesses great potential for producing high-performance PLA materials.

Importance of water and intramolecular interaction governs substantial blue shift of Csp2–H stretching frequency in complexes between chalcogenoaldehydes and water

Geometrical structure, stability and cooperativity, and contribution of hydrogen bonds to the stability of complexes between chalcogenoaldehydes and water were thoroughly investigated using quantum chemical methods. The stability of the complexes increases significantly when one or more H₂O molecules are added to the binary system, whereas it decreases sharply going from O to S, Se, or Te substitution. The O–H⋯O H-bond is twice as stable as C_sp²–H⋯O and O–H⋯S/Se/Te H-bonds. It is found that a considerable blue-shift of C_sp²–H stretching frequency in the C_sp²–H⋯O H-bond is mainly determined by an addition of water into the complexes along with the low polarity of the C_sp²–H covalent bond in formaldehyde and acetaldehyde. The C_sp²–H stretching frequency shift as a function of net second hyperconjugative energy for the σ*(C_sp²–H) antibonding orbital is observed. Remarkably, a considerable C_sp²–H blue shift of 109 cm⁻¹ has been reported for the first time. Upon the addition of H₂O into the binary systems, halogenated complexes witness a decreasing magnitude of the C_sp²–H stretching frequency blue-shift in the C_sp²–H⋯O H-bond, whereas CH₃-substituted complexes experience the opposite trend.

Theoretical Aspects of Nonconventional Hydrogen Bonds in the Complexes of Aldehydes and Hydrogen Chalcogenides

Hydrogen bonds (H-bonds) in the complexes between aldehydes and hydrogen chalcogenides, XCHO...nH₂Z with X = H, F, Cl, Br, and CH₃, Z = O, S, Se, and Te, and n = 1,2, were investigated using high-level ab initio calculations. The C_sp2-H...O H-bonds are found to be about twice as strong as the C_sp2-H...S/Se/Te counterparts. Remarkably, the S/Se/Te-H...S/Se/Te H-bonds are 4.5 times as weak as the O-H...O ones. The addition of the second H₂Z molecule into binary systems induces stronger complexes and causes a positive cooperative effect in ternary complexes. The blue shift of C_sp2-H stretching frequency involving the C_sp2-H...Z H-bond sharply increases when replacing one H atom in HCHO by a CH₃ group. In contrast, when one H atom in HCHO is substituted with a halogen, the magnitude of blue-shifting of the C_sp2-H...Z H-bond becomes smaller. The largest blue shift up to 92 cm^-1 of C_sp2-H stretching frequency in C_sp2-H...O H-bond in CH₃CHO...2H₂O has rarely been observed and is much greater than that in the cases of the C_sp2-H...S/Se/Te ones. The C_sp2-H blue shift of C_sp2-H...Z bonds in the halogenated aldehydes is converted into a red shift when H₂O is replaced by a heavier analogue, such as H₂S, H₂Se, or H₂Te. The stability and classification of nonconventional H-bonds including C_sp2-H...Se/Te, Te-H...Te, and Se/Te-H...O have been established for the first time.

Fabrication and characterization of dextran/zein hybrid electrospun fibers with tailored properties for controlled release of curcumin

BACKGROUND

In recent years, there has been considerable interest in the use of biopolymer electrospun nanofibers for various food applications due to the biocompatibility, biodegradability, and high loading capacity. Herein, we fabricated and characterized novel hybrid electrospun fibers from dextran (50%, w/v) and zein (0-30%, w/v) solutions, and the effects of various zein concentrations on the properties of the hybrid electrospun fibers were investigated.

RESULTS

When zein was added at low concentrations (5% and 10%), dextran and zein showed poor miscibility, as reflected by significantly decreased viscosity of the solutions, and the poor mechanical properties of the derived fiber membranes. When zein was added at medium concentrations (15-25%), hydrogen bonds were formed between dextran and zein molecules, as indicated by the red shift of Fourier-transform infrared bands and β-sheet to α-helix structural transformations. The fiber membranes electrospun from a solution with 25% zein showed the most hydrophobic surface, with a water contact angle of 116.9°. The homogenous dispersion of dextran and zein resulted in improved mechanical properties for fibers electrospun from a solution with 30% zein. Curcumin encapsulating dextran/zein electrospun fibers exhibited effective radical scavenging activity and ferric reducing power, along with the desired controlled release behavior for curcumin delivery.

CONCLUSION

Food grade dextran/zein hybrid electrospun fibers demonstrated tunable properties, and appear to be promising as delivery systems for bioactive and edible antimicrobial food packaging. © 2021 Society of Chemical Industry.

Unusually Large Hydrogen-Bond Cooperativity in Hydrogen Fluoride Clusters, (HF)n, n = 3 to 8, Revealed by the Molecular Tailoring Approach

In this work, our recently proposed molecular tailoring approach (MTA)-based method is employed for the evaluation of individual hydrogen-bond (HB) energies in linear (L) and cyclic (C) hydrogen fluoride clusters, (HF)_n (n = 3 to 8). The estimated individual HB energies calculated at the MP2(full)/aug-cc-pVTZ level for the L-(HF)_n are between 6.2 to 9.5 kcal/mol and those in the C-(HF)_n lie between 7.9 to 11.4 kcal/mol. The zero-point energy corrections and basis set superposition corrections are found to be very small (less than 0.6 and 1.2 kcal/mol, respectively). The cooperativity contribution toward individual HBs is seen to fall between 1.0 to 4.8 kcal/mol and 3.2 to 6.9 kcal/mol for linear and cyclic clusters, respectively. Interestingly, the HB energies in dimers, cleaved from these clusters, lie in a narrow range (4.4 to 5.2 kcal/mol) suggesting that the large HB strength in (HF)_n clusters is mainly due to the large cooperativity contribution, especially for n ≥ 5 (50 to 62% of the HBs energy). Furthermore, the HB energies in these clusters show a good qualitative correlation with geometrical parameters (H···F distance and F-H···F angles), stretching frequencies of F-H bonds, and electron density values at the (3, -1) bond critical points.

Interaction of Zwitterionic Osmolyte Trimethylamine N-oxide (TMAO) with Molecular Hydrophobes: An Interplay of Hydrophobic and Electrostatic Interactions

Interaction of trimethylamine N-oxide (TMAO) with charged/uncharged moieties of proteins and lipids is an important elementary step toward the multifaceted biofunctions of TMAO. Using minimum area Raman difference spectroscopy (MA-RDS) of aqueous TMAO (1.0 M) in the presence of deuterated molecular hydrophobes (e.g., deuterated tetramethylammonium cation (d-TMA⁺) and tert-butylalcohol (d-TBA)), we show that TMAO exhibits two distinct motifs of interaction with the cationic (d-TMA⁺) and uncharged (d-TBA) hydrophobes. Specifically, the trimethylammonium moiety of TMAO undergoes van der Waals attraction with the tert-butyl group of d-TBA, which is governed by their mutual hydrophobic interaction with water. This makes their methyl groups less exposed to water. In contrast, for the cationic hydrophobe (d-TMA⁺), TMAO interacts electrostatically via its negatively charged-oxygen, which in turn orients the TMAO-methyls away from the hydrophobe (d-TMA⁺), keeping them exposed to water.

Theoretical investigation on the improper hydrogen bond in κ-carrabiose⋯Y (Y = HF, HCl, HBr, NH3, H2O, and H2S) complexes

The nature of H-bonds in κ-carrabiose⋯Y (Y = HF, HCl, HBr, NH₃, H₂O, and H₂S) complexes was studied. For this aim, the structure of isolated κ-carrabiose was optimized using three global hybrids functional: B3LYP, PBE0, and M06-2X combined with 6-311G** basis set. Subsequently, the κ-carrabiose in the presence of HF, HCl, HBr, NH₃, H₂O, and H₂S was optimized using the CBS-4 M method. NBO analyses were then carried out at the MP2/6-311G** level of theory. A particular interest was focused on C₍₁₈₎-H₍₃₄₎⋯Y bond. The results reveal that the C₍₁₈₎-H₍₃₄₎⋯Y bond is an improper H-bond since a significant contraction of C₍₁₈₎-H₍₃₄₎ was observed during the complexation leading to a significant blueshifted stretching frequency. The NBO analyses have shown that the formation of the improper H-bonds C₍₁₈₎-H₍₃₄₎⋯Y (Y = F, Cl, Br, N, O, and S) is principally due to the increase of the s-character of the hybrid orbital in carbon atom (rehybridization) in κ-carrabiose⋯Y complexes. Regarding the polarization, it was proved that more the H-bond center (carbon in C₍₁₈₎-H₍₃₄₎⋯Y) becomes less positive, the hydrogen more positive, and Y more negative; more the contraction of the C₍₁₈₎-H₍₃₄₎ bond is important. It was also confirmed for intramolecular H-bonds in κ-carrabiose⋯Y complexes that the rehybridization is responsible for H-bonds nature either proper or improper.

Appraisal of individual hydrogen bond strengths and cooperativity in ammonia clusters via a molecular tailoring approach

In this work, we propose and test a method, based on the molecular tailoring approach (MTA), for the evaluation of individual hydrogen bond (HB) energies in ammonia (NH₃)_n clusters. This methodology was tested, in our earlier work, on water clusters. Liquid ammonia being a universal, non-aqueous ionizing solvent, such information of individual HB strength is indispensable in many studies. The estimated HB energies by an MTA-based method, in (NH₃)_n for n = 3-8, were calculated to be in the range of 0.65 to 5.54 kcal mol^-1 with the cooperativity contribution falling between -0.54 and 1.88 kcal mol^-1 both calculated at the MP2(full)/aug-cc-pVTZ level of theory. It is seen that the strong HBs in (NH₃)_n clusters were additionally strengthened by the large contribution of HB cooperativity. The accuracy of these estimated HB energies was validated by approximately estimating the molecular energy of a given cluster by adding the sum of HB energies to the sum of monomer energies. This approximately estimated molecular energy of a given cluster was found to be in excellent agreement with the actual calculated values. The negligibly small difference (less than 5.6 kcal mol^-1) in these two values suggests that the estimated individual HB energies in ammonia clusters are quite reliable. Furthermore, these estimated HB energies by MTA are in excellent qualitative agreement with the other indirect measures of HB strength, such as HB bond distances and angles, N-H stretching frequency and the electron density values at the (3,-1) bond critical points.

Pressure-Dependent Clustering in Ionic-Liquid-Poly (Vinylidene Fluoride) Mixtures: An Infrared Spectroscopic Study

The nanostructures of ionic liquids (ILs) have been the focus of considerable research attention in recent years. Nevertheless, the nanoscale structures of ILs in the presence of polymers have not been described in detail at present. In this study, nanostructures of ILs disturbed by poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVdF) were investigated via high-pressure infrared spectra. For 1-(2-hydroxyethyl)-3-methylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide ([HEMIm][TFSI])-PVdF mixtures, non-monotonic frequency shifts of the C^4,5-H vibrations upon dilution were observed under ambient pressure. The experimental results suggest the presence of microheterogeneity in the [HEMIm][TFSI] systems. Upon compression, PVdF further influenced the local structure of C^4,5–H via pressure-enhanced IL–PVdF interactions; however, the local structures of C²–H and hydrogen-bonded O–H were not affected by PVdF under high pressures. For choline [TFSI]–PVdF mixtures, PVdF may disturb the local structures of hydrogen-bonded O–H. In the absence of the C^4,5–H⋯anion and C²–H⋯anion in choline [TFSI]–PVdF mixtures, the O–H group becomes a favorable moiety for pressure-enhanced IL–PVdF interactions. Our results indicate the potential of high-pressure application for designing pressure-dependent electronic switches based on the possible changes in the microheterogeneity and electrical conductivity in IL-PVdF systems under various pressures.
