Abstract
Low-temperature irradiation of linear [3]- and [4]phenylene cyclopentadienylcobalt complexes generates labile, fluxional η(4)-arene complexes, in which the metal resides on the terminal ring. Warming induces a haptotropic shift to the neighboring cyclobutadiene rings, followed by the previously reported intercyclobutadiene migration. NMR scrutiny of the primary photoproduct reveals a thermally accessible 16-electron cobalt η(2)-triplet species, which, according to DFT computations, is responsible for the rapid symmetrization of the molecules along their long axes. Calculations indicate that the entire haptotropic manifold along the phenylene frame is governed by dual-state reactivity of alternating 18-electron singlets and 16-electron triplets.

Abstract
Here we report a general method for the measurement of (13)C kinetic isotope effects at natural abundance for reactions that yield two or more products concurrently. We use, as an example, a recently reported Co-catalyzed reaction between cyclopentene and 1-phenyl-1-propyne. High-precision intermolecular (13)C isotope effects are reported for both the formal [2+2] cycloaddition (major) and Alder-ene (minor) reaction products. Mechanistic possibilities that are in accord with observed isotope effect measurements are discussed.

Abstract
Molecular orbital analysis depicts the CNC(nb) backbone of the smif (1,3-di-(2-pyridyl)-2-azaallyl) ligand as having singlet diradical and/or ionic character where electrophilic or nucleophilic attack is plausible. Reversible dimerization of (smif)Fe{N(SiMe3)2} (1) to [{(Me3Si)2N}Fe]2(μ-κ(3),κ(3)-N,py2-smif,smif) (2) may be construed as diradical coupling. A proton transfer within the backbone-methylated, and o-pyridine-methylated smif of putative ((b)Me2(o)Me2smif)FeN(SiMe3)2 (8) provides a route to [{(Me3Si)2N}Fe]2(μ-κ(4),κ(4)-N,py2,C-((b)Me,(b)CH2,(o)Me2(smif)H))2 (9). A 3 + 2 cyclization of ditolyl-acetylene occurs with 1, leading to the dimer [{2,5-di(pyridin-2-yl)-3,4-di-(p-tolyl-2,5-dihydropyrrol-1-ide)}FeN(SiMe3)2]2 (11), and the collateral discovery of alkyne cyclotrimerization led to a brief study that identified Fe(N(SiMe3)2(THF) as an effective catalyst. Nucleophilic attack by (smif)2Fe (13) on (t)BuNCO and (2,6-(i)Pr2C6H3)NCO afforded (RNHCO-smif)2Fe (14a, R = (t)Bu; 14b, 2,6-(i)PrC6H3). Calculations suggested that (dpma)2Fe (15) would favorably lose dihydrogen to afford (smif)2Fe (13). H2-transfer to alkynes, olefins, imines, PhN═NPh, and ketones was explored, but only stoichiometric reactions were affected. Some physical properties of the compounds were examined, and X-ray structural studies on several dinuclear species were conducted.

Abstract
This study presents the synthesis and physical characterization of a series of structurally well-defined star-shaped poly(lactic acids). Polymer stars are prepared from a series of multifunctional alcohol cores including flexible polyols pentaerythritol and dipentaerythritol (four-armed and six-armed cores, respectively) and rigid substituted arenes tri(hydroxymethyl)benzene and hexa(hydroxymethyl)benzene. Utilizing a tin(II) octanoate catalyst, arms of 10 monomer units long are built from rac-lactide and l-lactide to form atactic and isotactic star polymers. Polymers were subsequently characterized by means of NMR spectroscopy, gel permeation chromatography, differential scanning calorimetry, and thermogravimetric analysis. Our results support previous work that suggests that the length of the individual arms, not the total molecular weight, correlates to physical characteristics including glass, melt, crystallization, and decomposition temperatures. In addition, differences between core molecules suggest that the chemical nature of the core can significantly alter the physical properties of the star polymer. Trends in crystallization and glass transition temperatures relative to the core used merit further study and correlate closest to the molecular weight and the number of arms emanating from the star core. It is also clear that the rigidity provided by aromatic cores has a significant effect on the melting temperatures of these macromolecules.
