Chiral Self-Sorting of [2+3] Salicylimine Cage Compounds

An inherently chiral C₃ -symmetric triaminotribenzotriquinacene was condensed in racemic and enantiomerically pure form with a bis(salicylaldehyde) to form [2+3] salicylimine cage compounds. Investigations on the chiral self-sorting revealed that while entropy favors narcissistic self-sorting in solution, selective social self-sorting can be achieved by exploiting the difference in solubility between the homochiral and heterochiral cages. Gas sorption measurements further showed that seemingly small structural differences can have a significant impact on the surface area of microporous covalent cage compounds.

Supramolecular Double-Helix Formation by Diastereoisomeric Conformations of Configurationally Enantiomeric Macrocycles

Solid-state superstructures, resulting from assemblies programmed by homochirality, are attracting considerable attention. In addition, artificial double-helical architectures are being investigated, especially in relation to the ways in which homochiral small molecules can be induced to yield helical forms as a result of chiral induction. Herein, we report the highly specific self-assembly upon crystallization of a double-helical superstructure from an enantiopure macrocyclic dimer which adopts two diastereoisomeric conformations in a molar ratio of 1.5:1 in dimethyl sulfoxide. These two conformational diastereoisomers self-organize-and self-sort-in the crystalline phase in equimolar proportions to form two single-handed helices which are complementary to each other, giving rise to the assembly of a double helix that is stabilized by intermolecular [C-H···O] and π-π stacking interactions. The observed self-sorting phenomenon occurs on going from a mixed-solvent system containing two equilibrating conformational diastereoisomers, presumably present in unequal molar proportions, into the solid state. The diastereoisomeric conformations are captured upon crystallization in a 1:1 molar ratio in the double-helical superstructure, whose handedness is dictated by the choice of the enantiomeric macrocyclic dimer. The interconversion of the two conformational diastereoisomers derived from each configurationally enantiomeric macrocycle was investigated in CD₃SOCD₃ solution by variable-temperature ¹H NMR spectroscopy (VT NMR) and circular dichroism (VT CD). The merging of the resonances for the protons corresponding to the two diastereoisomers at a range of coalescence temperatures in the VT NMR spectra and occurrence of the isosbestic points in the VT CD spectra indicate that the two diastereoisomers are interconverting slowly in solution on the ¹H NMR time scale but rapidly on the laboratory time scale. To the best of our knowledge, the self-assembly of such solid-state superstructures from two conformational diastereoisomers of a homochiral macrocycle is a rare, if not unique, occurrence.

Chirality- and sequence-selective successive self-sorting via specific homo- and complementary-duplex formations

Self-recognition and self-discrimination within complex mixtures are of fundamental importance in biological systems, which entirely rely on the preprogrammed monomer sequences and homochirality of biological macromolecules. Here we report artificial chirality- and sequence-selective successive self-sorting of chiral dimeric strands bearing carboxylic acid or amidine groups joined by chiral amide linkers with different sequences through homo- and complementary-duplex formations. A mixture of carboxylic acid dimers linked by racemic-1,2-cyclohexane bis-amides with different amide sequences (NHCO or CONH) self-associate to form homoduplexes in a completely sequence-selective way, the structures of which are different from each other depending on the linker amide sequences. The further addition of an enantiopure amide-linked amidine dimer to a mixture of the racemic carboxylic acid dimers resulted in the formation of a single optically pure complementary duplex with a 100% diastereoselectivity and complete sequence specificity stabilized by the amidinium–carboxylate salt bridges, leading to the perfect chirality- and sequence-selective duplex formation.

Supramolecular block copolymers by kinetically controlled co-self-assembly of planar and core-twisted perylene bisimides

New synthetic methodologies for the formation of block copolymers have revolutionized polymer science within the last two decades. However, the formation of supramolecular block copolymers composed of alternating sequences of larger block segments has not been realized yet. Here we show by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), 2D NMR and optical spectroscopy that two different perylene bisimide dyes bearing either a flat (A) or a twisted (B) core self-assemble in water into supramolecular block copolymers with an alternating sequence of (A_mBB)_n. The highly defined ultralong nanowire structure of these supramolecular copolymers is entirely different from those formed upon self-assembly of the individual counterparts, that is, stiff nanorods (A) and irregular nanoworms (B), respectively. Our studies further reveal that the as-formed supramolecular block copolymer constitutes a kinetic self-assembly product that transforms into thermodynamically more stable self-sorted homopolymers upon heating.

Block co-polymers are becoming of ever-increasing importance in polymer science. Here, the authors show that the co-assembly of two perylene bisimide dyes leads to supramolecular block copolymer structures with a regular alternating sequence of short blocks of respective homoaggregates.

Synthesis, π-face-selective aggregation, and π-face chiral recognition of configurationally stable C(3)-symmetric propeller-chiral molecules with a π-core

The C3 -symmetric propeller-chiral compounds (P,P,P)-1 and (M,M,M)-1 with planar π-cores perpendicular to the C3 -axis were synthesized in optically pure states. (P,P,P)-1 possesses two distinguishable propeller-chiral π-faces with rims of different heights named the (P/L)-face and (P/H)-face. Each face is configurationally stable because of the rigid structure of the helicenes contained in the π-core. (P,P,P)-1 formed dimeric aggregates in organic solutions as indicated by the results of (1) H NMR, CD, and UV/Vis spectroscopy and vapor pressure osmometry analyses. The (P/L)/(P/L) interactions were observed in the solid state by single-crystal X-ray analysis, and they were also predominant over the (P/H)/(P/H) and (P/L)/(P/H) interactions in solution, as indicated by the results of (1) H and 2D NMR spectroscopy analyses. The dimerization constant was obtained for a racemic mixture, which showed that the heterochiral (P,P,P)-1/(M,M,M)-1 interactions were much weaker than the homochiral (P,P,P)-1/(P,P,P)-1 interactions. The results indicated that the propeller-chiral (P/L)-face interacts with the (P/L)-face more strongly than with the (P/H)-face, (M/L)-face, and (M/H)-face. The study showed the π-face-selective aggregation and π-face chiral recognition of the configurationally stable propeller-chiral molecules.

Hydrogen-bond-driven controlled molecular marriage in covalent cages

A supramolecular approach that uses hydrogen-bonding interaction as a driving force to accomplish exceptional self-sorting in the formation of imine-based covalent organic cages is discussed. Utilizing the dynamic covalent chemistry approach from three geometrically similar dialdehydes (A, B, and D) and the flexible triamine tris(2-aminoethyl)amine (X), three new [3+2] self-assembled nanoscopic organic cages have been synthesized and fully characterized by various techniques. When a complex mixture of the dialdehydes and triamine X was subjected to reaction, it was found that only dialdehyde B (which has OH groups for H-bonding) reacted to form the corresponding cage B3X2 selectively. Surprisingly, the same reaction in the absence of aldehyde B yielded a mixture of products. Theoretical and experimental investigations are in complete agreement that the presence of the hydroxyl moiety adjacent to the aldehyde functionality in B is responsible for the selective formation of cage B3X2 from a complex reaction mixture. This spectacular selection was further analyzed by transforming a nonpreferred (non-hydroxy) cage into a preferred (hydroxy) cage B3X2 by treating the former with aldehyde B. The role of the H-bond in partner selection in a mixture of two dialdehydes and two amines has also been established. Moreover, an example of unconventional imine bond metathesis in organic cage-to-cage transformation is reported.

Transition metal complexes of axially chiral tetrathioether bay-substituted perylene bisimide dyes

Nucleophilic substitution of 1,6,7,12-tetrachloro perylene bisimide (PBI) with n-butanethiol provided a novel, highly twisted PBI bearing four sulphur coordination sites at the bay positions, from which silver and palladium complexes were prepared.

Bis-thioether-substituted perylene diimides: structural, electrochemical, and spectroelectrochemical properties

The synthesis and separation of the 1,6- and 1,7- isomers of N,N'-bis(alkyl)diadamantylthio-3,4,9,10-perylenetetracarboxylic acid diimide are reported. Investigations of the structural, electrochemical, spectroscopic, and spectroelectrochemical properties of the isomers reveal a sequence of electrochemically and chemically reversible reduction processes for both isomers. Three X-ray crystal structures are reported including a pair of 1,6- and 1,7-isomers demonstrating the twist of the perylene core in the solid state. Our studies thoroughly characterize the mono- and direduced states of the two isomers allowing unequivocal characterization of the reduced species by UV-vis and IR spectroscopic measurements. EPR studies also allow direct identification of the monoreduced PTCDI species and spectroscopic measurements confirm the delocalization of electronic density around the carbonyl moieties of the reduced species.

Chiral discrimination by vibrational spectroscopy utilizing local modes

Chiral discrimination of homochiral and heterochiral H-bonded complexes is a challenge for both experimentalists and computational chemists. It is demonstrated that a two-pronged approach based on far-infrared vibrational spectroscopy and the calculation of local mode frequencies facilitates the chiral discrimination of H-bonded dimers. The local H-bond stretching frequencies identify the strongest H-bonds and by this the dominating chiral diastereomer. This is shown in the case of peroxide, trioxide, hydrazine, glycidol, and butan-2-ol dimers as well as propylene oxide···glycidol complexes investigated with the help of second-order Møller-Plesset perturbation, coupled cluster, and density functional theory calculations where, in the latter case, the ωB97X-D functional was used for an improved description of H-bonding. In some cases, additional intermolecular interactions overrule the important role of H-bonding, which is found by calculating chirodiastaltic energies.

Molecular marriage through partner preferences in covalent cage formation and cage-to-cage transformation

Unprecedented self-sorting of three-dimensional purely organic cages driven by dynamic covalent bonds is described. Four different cages were first synthesized by condensation of two triamines and two dialdehydes separately. When a mixture of all the components was allowed to react, only two cages were formed, which suggests a high-fidelity self-recognition. The issue of the preference of one triamine for a particular dialdehyde was further probed by transforming a non-preferred combination to either of the two preferred combinations by reacting it with the appropriate triamine or dialdehyde.
