Abstract
A series of cyclometalated platinum(II) complexes of the type [(ppy)Pt(LM)]n+ (n = 0, 1) with π-bonded catecholates acting as organometallic ligands (LM) have been prepared and characterized by analytical techniques. In addition, the structures of two complexes of the series were determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. The packing shows the formation of a 1D supramolecular assembly generated by dPt-πCp* interactions among individual units. All complexes are luminescent in the solid state and in solution media. The results of photophysics have been rationalized by means of density functional theory (DFT) and time-dependent DFT investigations.

Abstract
A novel photochromic benzo[b]phosphole oxide has been demonstrated to display photochromic properties with excellent fatigue resistance and thermal irreversibility in polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) thin film under ambient conditions. The remarkable photochromic behaviour can be achieved by rational molecular design, in which the weakly aromatic phosphole oxide is directly incorporated into the photo-responsive dithienylethene units. Photopatterning via photoinduced colouration and decolouration has been performed to demonstrate the repeatable and distinct transformation between the bistable states, making it a promising candidate with photoswitching properties for optoelectronic applications.

Abstract
Intramolecularly bridged diarylethenes exhibit improved photocyclization quantum yields because the anti-syn isomerization that originally suppresses photocyclization in classical diarylethenes is blocked. Experimentally, three possible channels have been proposed to interpret experimental observation, but many details of photochromic mechanism remain ambiguous. In this work we have employed a series of electronic structure methods (OM2/MRCI, DFT, TDDFT, RI-CC2, DFT/MRCI, and CASPT2) to comprehensively study excited state properties, photocyclization, and photoreversion dynamics of 1,2-dicyano[2,2]metacyclophan-1-ene. On the basis of optimized stationary points and minimum-energy conical intersections, we have refined experimentally proposed photochromic mechanism. Only an S1/S0 minimum-energy conical intersection is located; thus, we can exclude the third channel experimentally proposed. In addition, we find that both photocyclization and photoreversion processes use the same S1/S0 conical intersection to decay the S1 system to the S0 state, so we can unify the remaining two channels into one. These new insights are verified by our OM2/MRCI nonadiabatic dynamics simulations. The S1 excited-state lifetimes of photocyclization and photoreversion are estimated to be 349 and 453 fs, respectively, which are close to experimentally measured values: 240 ± 60 and 250 fs in acetonitrile solution. The present study not only interprets experimental observations and refines previously proposed mechanism but also provides new physical insights that are valuable for future experiments.

Abstract
To switch bulk nonlinear optical (NLO) effects represents an exciting new branch of NLO material science, whereas it remains a great challenge to achieve high contrast for "on/off" of quadratic NLO effects in crystalline materials. Here, we report the supereminent NLO-switching behaviors of a single-component plastic crystal, 2-(hydroxymethyl)-2-nitro-1,3-propanediol (1), which shows a record high contrast of at least ∼150, exceeding all the known crystalline switches. Such a breakthrough is clearly elucidated from the slowing down of highly isotropic molecular motions during plastic-to-rigid transition. The deep understanding of its intrinsic plasticity and superior NLO property allows the construction of a feasible switching mechanism. As a unique class of substances with short-range disorder embedded in long-range ordered crystalline lattice, plastic crystals enable response to external stimuli and fulfill specific photoelectric functions, which open a newly conceptual avenue for the designing of new functional materials.

Abstract
Neutral cyclometalated platinum(ii) N-heterocyclic carbene complexes [Pt(C^C*)(O^O)] with C^C* ligands based on 1-phenyl-1,2,4-triazol-5-ylidene and 4-phenyl-1,2,4-triazol-5-ylidene, as well as acetylacetonato (O^O = acac) and 1,3-bis(2,4,6-trimethylphenyl)propan-1,3-dionato (O^O = mesacac) ancillary ligands were synthesized and characterized. All complexes are emissive at room temperature in a poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) matrix with emission maxima in the blue region of the spectrum. High quantum efficiencies and short decay times were observed for all complexes with mesacac ancillary ligands. The sterically demanding mesityl groups of the mesacac ligand effectively prevent molecular stacking. The emission behavior of these emitters is in general independent of the position of the nitrogen in the backbone of the N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) unit and a variety of substituents in 4-position of the phenyl unit, meta to the cyclometalating bond.

Abstract
Dithienylethene (DTE)-2,6-diiodoBodipy triads were prepared with the aim to photoswitch the triplet excited state of the 2,6-diiodoBodipy moiety. Bodipy was selected due to its low T1 state energy level to avoid sensitized photocyclization of DTE, which is very often encountered in DTE photoswitches, so that the photochemistry of DTE and the organic chromophore can be addressed independently. This is the first time that DTE was covalently connected with an organic triplet photosensitizer. For the triad with DTE-o structure, selective photoexcitation into the diiodoBodipy part did not initiate photocyclization of DTE-o. Upon photoirradiation at 254 nm, thus the DTE-o → DTE-c transformation, the intersystem crossing (ISC) of 2,6-diiodoBodipy moiety was competed by the photoactivated resonance energy transfer (RET), with Bodipy as the intramolecular energy donor and DTE-c as energy acceptor. The fluorescence of Bodipy was quenched and the triplet state lifetime of Bodipy was reduced from 105.1 to 40.9 μs. The photoreversion is O2-independent, but can be greatly accelerated upon selective photoexcitation into the diiodoBodipy absorption band (at 535 nm). We concluded that ISC is not outcompeted by RET. The photoswitching of the triplet state was transduced to the singlet oxygen photosensitizing, as well as triplet-triplet annihilation upconversion.

Abstract
Novel photochromic dithienylethene-based platinum(II) complexes (C^N^N)Pt(C≡C-DTE-C6H4-D) ((C^N^N) = 4,4'-di(n-hexyl)-6-phenyl-2,2'-bipyridine; D = H, NMe2) were prepared and characterized. Their excellent photochromic properties allow the photoinduced switching of their second-order nonlinear optical properties in solution, as measured by the EFISH technique, due to formation of an extended π-conjugated ligand upon suitable electromagnetic radiation. Insights into the electronic structures of the complexes and the nature of their excited states have been obtained by DFT and TD-DFT calculations. These novel Pt(II) complexes were nanoorganized in polymer films which were poled, affording new materials characterized by a good second-order NLO response that can be easily switched, with an excellent NLO contrast. To the best of our knowledge, our compounds allowed designing the very first examples of switchable NLO polymer films based on metal complexes.

Abstract
A theoretical study on the PtII complex A based on a dimesitylboron (BMes2)-functionalized [Pt(C^N)(acac)] (C^N = 2-phenyl-pyridyl, acac = acetylaceton) complex, as well as three conjugation-extended analogues of the methylimidazole (C*) ligand BMes2-[Pt(C^C*)(acac)] complexes B–D is performed. Their theoretical geometries, electronic structures, emission properties, and the radiative decay rate constants (kr) were also investigated. The energy differences between the two highest occupied orbitals with dominant Pt d-orbital components (Δddocc) of D both at the ground and excited states are the smallest of all. Compared with B, the charge transfer in D possesses a marked trend towards the extended conjugated group, while C changed inconspicuously. The lowest-lying absorptions and the phosphorescence of them can be described as a mixed metal-to-ligand charge transfer (MLCT)/intra-ligand π→π* charge transfer (ILCT) and 3MLCT/3ILCT, respectively. The variation of charge transfer properties induced by extended conjugation and the radiative decay rate constants (kr) calculated revealed that D is a more efficient blue phosphorescence material with a 497 nm emission transition.
