Abstract
AbstractOrganophosphorus compounds have numerous useful applications, from versatile ligands and nucleophiles in the case of trivalent organophosphorus species to therapeutics, agrochemicals and material additives for pentavalent species. Although phosphorus chemistry is a fairly mature field, the construction of C–P(V) bonds relies heavily on either prefunctionalized substrates such as alkyl or aryl halides, or requires previously oxidized bonds such as C=N or C=O, leading to potential sustainability issues when looking at the overall synthetic route. In light of the recent advances in photochemistry, using photons as a reagent can provide better alternatives for phosphorylations by unlocking radical mechanisms and providing interesting redox pathways. This review will showcase the different photomediated phosphorylation procedures available for converting C–H bonds into C–P(V) bonds.1 Introduction1.1 Organophosphorus Compounds1.2 Phosphorylation: Construction of C–P(V) Bonds1.3 Photochemistry as an Alternative to Classical Phosphorylations2 Ionic Mechanisms Involving Nucleophilic Additions3 Mechanisms Involving Radical Intermediates3.1 Mechanisms Involving Reactive Carbon Radicals3.2 Mechanisms Involving Phosphorus Radicals3.2.1 Photoredox: Direct Creation of Phosphorus Radicals3.2.2 Photoredox: Indirect Creation of Phosphorus Radicals3.2.3 Dual Catalysis3.3 Photolytic Cleavage4 Conclusion and Outlook

Abstract
Highly polarized lithium phosphides (LiPR2 ) were synthesized, for the first time, in deep eutectic solvents as sustainable reaction media, at room temperature and in the absence of protecting atmosphere, through direct deprotonation of both aliphatic and aromatic secondary phosphines (HPR2 ) by n-BuLi. The subsequent addition of in-situ generated LiPR2 to aldehydes or epoxides proceeded quickly and chemoselectively, thereby allowing the straightforward access to the corresponding α- or β-hydroxy phosphine oxides, respectively, under air and at room temperature (bench conditions), which are traditionally considered as textbook-prohibited conditions in the field of polar organometallic chemistry of s-block elements.

Abstract
The Hirao reaction involving the phosphinoylation or phosphonation of aryl halides by >P(O)H reagents is a P–C bond forming transformation belonging to the recently very hot topic of cross-couplings. The Pd- or Ni-catalyzed variations take place via the usual cycle including oxidative addition, ligand exchange, and reductive elimination. However, according to the literature, the nature of the transition metal catalysts is not unambiguous. In this feature article, the catalysts described for the Pd(OAc)2-promoted cases are summarized, and it is concluded that the “(HOY2P)2Pd(0)” species (Y = aryl, alkoxy) is the real catalyst. In our model, the excess of the >P(O)H reagent served as the P-ligand. During the less studied Ni(II)-catalyzed instances the “(HOY2P)(−OY2P)Ni(II)Cl−” form was found to enter the catalytic cycle. The newest conclusions involving the exact structure of the catalysts, and the mechanism for their formation explored by us were supported by our earlier experimental data and theoretical calculations.

Abstract
A simple and efficient method for the regioselective iodophosphoryloxylation of alkenes with P(O)-OH bonds has been established by using NIS (N-iodosuccinimide) as the iodination reagent under transition-metal-free conditions. The present protocol is compatible with different functional groups, and suitable for various alkenes and P(O)-OH compounds. A variety of functionalized β-iodo-1-ethyl phosphinic/phosphoric acid esters are obtained in good to excellent yields, which could be further transformed to diversified building blocks for the synthesis of bioactive compounds, pharmaceuticals and functional materials.

Abstract
Theoretical investigations have elucidated the mechanism of metal-free electrophilic phosphinative cyclization of alkynes reaction reported by Miura and coworkers. Two competitive mechanisms I and II were explored without or with 2,6-lutidine. Both of I and II involve transformation of P(V) to P(III), electrophilic addition, ring opening and cyclization/cyclization, hydrogen-transfer, and oxidation. The rate-determining step of mechanism I and competitive less-step II is electrophilic [2 + 1] cycloaddition and electrophilic addition via single CP bond formation with activation barrier of 13.5 and 10.6 kcal/mol, respectively. Our calculation results suggested that the cumulative effect of the isomer of 2,6-lutidine and Tf2 O as well as TfO- affects the title reaction to some extent, and simultaneously activates key reaction sites and reverses the polarities of them via the formation of abundant noncovalent interactions to decrease activation barriers of TSs. In addition, the effects of two series substituents on reactivity of phosphine oxide were investigated. Therefore, our study will serve as useful guidance for more efficient metal-free synthesis of organophosphorus compounds mediated by pyridine reagents.

Abstract
The increasing pharmaceutical importance of trifluoromethylarenes has stimulated the development of more efficient trifluoromethylation reactions. Tremendous efforts have focused on copper- and palladium-mediated/catalyzed trifluoromethylation of aryl halides. In contrast, no general method exists for the conversion of widely available inert electrophiles, such as phenol derivatives, into the corresponding trifluoromethylated arenes. Reported herein is a practical nickel-mediated trifluoromethylation of phenol derivatives with readily available trimethyl(trifluoromethyl)silane (TMSCF3 ). The strategy relies on PMe3 -promoted oxidative addition and transmetalation, and CCl3 CN-induced reductive elimination. The broad utility of this transformation has been demonstrated through the direct incorporation of trifluoromethyl into aromatic and heteroaromatic systems, including biorelevant compounds.

Abstract
The use of photochemical reactions that do not require expensive photocatalysts or transition metals is an environmentally friendly strategy for accomplishing a variety of structural transformations. Herein, we report a protocol for photoinduced transition-metal- and external-photocatalyst-free intramolecular heteroaryl/aryl rearrangement reactions of 2-heteroaryl/aryloxybenzaldehydes. The protocol was compatible with a variety of functionalities, including methyl, methoxy, cyano, ester, trifluoromethyl, halogen, and heteroaromatic rings. Control experiments suggested that the reaction proceeded via a photoinduced intramolecular heteroaryl/aryl rearrangement process involving photoexcitation of the aldehyde carbonyl group, radical addition, C-C bond formation and C(Ar)-O bond cleavage.

Abstract
![]()
It was found by us that the P–C
coupling reaction of >P(O)H
reagents with PhX (X = I and Br) in the presence of NiCl2/Zn as the precursors for the assumed Ni(0) complexant together with
2,2′-bipyridine as the ligand took place only with PhI at 50/70
°C. M06-2X/6-31G(d,p)//PCM(MeCN) calculations
for the reaction of Ph2P(O)H and PhX revealed a favorable
energetics only for the loss of iodide following the oxidative addition
of PhI on the Ni(0) atom. However, the assumed transition states with
Ni(II) formed after P-ligand uptake and deprotonation could not undergo
reductive elimination meaning a “dead-end route”. Hence,
it was assumed that the initial complexation of the remaining Ni2+ ions with 2,2′-bipyridine may move the P–C
coupling forward via a Ni(II) → Ni(IV) transition. This route
was also confirmed by calculations, and this mechanism was justified
by preparative experiments carried out using NiCl2/bipyridine
in the absence of Zn. Hence, the generally accepted Ni(0) →
Ni(II) route was refuted by us, confirming the generality of the Ni(II)
→ N(IV) protocol, either in the presence of bipyridine, or
using the excess of the >P(O)H reagent as the P-ligand.
The results of the calculations on the complex forming ability of
Ni(0) and Ni(II) with 2,2′-bipyridine or the P-reagents were in accord with our mechanistic proposition.

Abstract
With the aim of exploiting new organometallic species for cross-coupling reactions, we report here on the AuIII -mediated Caryl -P bond formation occurring upon reaction of C^N cyclometalated AuIII complexes with phosphines. The [Au(C^N)Cl2 ] complex 1 featuring the bidentate 2-benzoylpyridine (CCO N) scaffold was found to react with PTA (1,3,5-triaza-7-phosphaadamantane) under mild conditions, including in water, to afford the corresponding phosphonium 5 through C-P reductive elimination. A mechanism is proposed for the title reaction based on in situ 31 P{1 H} NMR and HR-ESI-MS analyses combined with DFT calculations. The C-P coupling has been generalized to other C^N cyclometalated AuIII complexes and other tertiary phosphines. Overall, this work provides new insights into the reactivity of cyclometalated AuIII compounds and establishes initial structure-activity relationships to develop AuIII -mediated C-P cross-coupling reactions.

A surprising mechanism lacking the Ni(0) state during the Ni(II)-catalyzed P–C cross-coupling reaction performed in the absence of a reducing agent – An experimental and a theoretical study. Abstract
Abstract
The Hirao reaction, i.e. the P–C coupling between a bromoarene and a >P(O)H reagent performed in most cases in the presence of a Pd(0) complex incorporating a P-ligand may also be carried out applying a Ni(II) catalyst precursor with or without Zn or Mg as the reducing agent. The Ni catalysts may include P- or N-ligands. B3LYP/6-31G(d,p)//PCM(MeCN) quantum chemical calculations suggested that the mechanism of the NiX2 catalyzed (X=Cl or Br) P–C couplings performed in the absence of a reducing agent, and in the excess of the >P(O)H reagent serving as the P-ligand (via its tautomeric >POH form) is completely different from that of the Pd(OAc)2 promoted version, as no reduction of the Ni(II) occurs. In the two variations mentioned, the active catalyst is the dehydrobrominated species derived from primary complex [(HO)Y2P]2Ni(II)Br2, and the [(HO)Y2P]2Pd(0) complex itself, respectively. Both species undergo temporary oxidation (to “Ni(IV)” and “Pd(II)”, respectively) in the catalytic cycle. During the catalysis with “P2Ni(II)X2”, one of the P-ligands serves the >P(O)H function of the ArP(O)H < product. The consequence of this difference is that in the Ni(II)-catalyzed case, somewhat less >P(O)H-species is needed than in the Pd(0)-promoted instance. Applying 10 % of the Pd(OAc)2 or NiX2 precursor, the optimum quantity of the P-reagent is 1.3 equivalent and, in the first approach, 1.1 equivalent, respectively. Preparative experiments justified the new mechanism explored. The ligation of Ni(II) was also investigated by theoretical calculations. It was proved that the bis-complexation is the most favorable energetically as compared to the mono-, tri- and tetra-ligation.

Abstract
Distinct approaches to synthesize bis-azine biaryls are in demand as these compounds have multiple applications in the chemical sciences and are challenging targets for metal-catalyzed cross-coupling reactions. Most approaches focus on developing new reagents as the formal nucleophilic coupling partner that can function in metal-catalyzed processes. We present an alternative approach using pyridine and diazine phosphines as nucleophilic partners and chloroazines where the heterobiaryl bond is formed via a tandem SNAr-phosphorus ligand-coupling sequence. The heteroaryl phosphines are prepared from chloroazines and are bench-stable solids. A range of bis-azine biaryls can be formed from abundant chloroazines using this strategy that would be challenging using traditional approaches. A one-pot cross-electrophile coupling of two chloroazines is feasible, and we also compared the phosphorus-mediated strategy with metal-catalyzed coupling reactions to show advantages and compatibility.

Abstract
The free-radical arylation of H-phosphinates and related compounds was examined. A practical catalytic process with the air as the oxidant could not be found. However, an inexpensive and robust methodology was developed, using catalytic Mn(II) as the radical initiator and excess Mn(IV) as the stoichiometric oxidant. Using these conditions, the inter- and intramolecular arylation of phosphinylidene compounds has a broad scope, including application to the synthesis of P-heterocycles. A full account of this methodology is presented including a discussion of its limitations.

Abstract
A site-selective supported palladium nanoparticle catalyzed Suzuki-Miyaura cross-coupling reaction with heteroaryl esters and arylboronic acids as coupling partners was developed. This methodology provides a heterogeneous catalytic route for aryl ketone formation via C(acyl)-O bond activation of esters by successful suppression of the undesired decarbonylation phenomenon. The catalyst can be reused and shows high activity after eight cycles. The XPS analysis of the catalyst before and after the reaction suggested that the reaction might be performed via a Pd0/PdII catalytic cycle that began with Pd0.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The Hirao reaction discovered ca. 35 years ago is an important P-C coupling protocol between dialkyl phosphites and aryl halides in the presence of Pd(PPh3)4 as the catalyst and a base to provide aryl phosphonates. Then, the reaction was extended to other Preagents, such as secondary phosphine oxides and H-phosphinates and to other aryl and hetaryl derivatives to afford also phosphinic esters and tertiary phosphine oxides. Instead of the Pd(PPh3)4 catalyst, Pd(OAc)2 and Ni-salts were also applied as catalyst precursors together with a number of mono- and bidentate P-ligands. OBJECTIVE In our review, we undertook to summarize the target reaction with a special stress on the developments attained in the last 6 years, hence this paper is an update of our earlier reviews in a similar topic. CONCLUSIONS "Greener" syntheses aimed at utilizing phase transfer catalytic and microwave-assisted approaches, even under "P-ligand-free. or even solvent-free conditions are the up-to date versions of the classical Hirao reaction. The mechanism of the reaction is also in the focus these days.

Abstract
A t-BuONa-mediated C-OH/P(O)-H cross dehydration coupling to produce alkylphosphine oxides is developed. This reaction employed readily available alcohols and P(O)-H compounds as the starting materials, providing an efficient alternative method for constructing sp3 C-P bonds. A reasonable reaction path involving dehydration and subsequent regio-selective hydrophosphorylation of the resulting alkenes was proposed.
