Abstract
Treatment of N-substituted pyrroles with carbonyl compounds and nucleophiles under indium catalysis was found to be a promising method for preparing β-alkylpyrroles without contamination by α-alkylpyrroles. With this methodology, a variety of alkyl groups, which are primary, secondary, and tertiary as well as cyclic and functionalized types, can be introduced in place onto the pyrrole ring. The simplicity performable as a catalytic one-step process is one of the important features of this reaction. The substituent on the nitrogen atom of the product β-alkylpyrrole can be removed easily by literature procedures. Therefore, the indium-catalyzed β-alkylation plus the N-deprotection is a powerful system for all six variations, which are N-substituted and N-unsubstituted β-alkylpyrroles having primary, secondary, and tertiary alkyl groups. Our method is applicable to synthesizing, albeit in two steps, β-pyrrolyl-group-connected unsymmetrical tetraarylmethanes that have not been addressed thus far. Mechanistic studies showed the following three aspects: (1) dipyrrolylalkanes produced in situ from the pyrrole and carbonyl compound are key intermediates, (2) the selective β-alkylation is attributed to the selective elimination of an α-pyrrolyl group from the dipyrrolylalkane intermediates, and (3) the indium Lewis acid catalyst is indispensable for the progress of both stages.

Abstract
An efficient synthetic method for carbazoles has been developed employing diazo anilinoalkynes as substrates. Sequential activation of the orthogonal functional groups embedded in diazo anilinoalkyne substrates by tandem gold-copper catalysis leads to the formation of highly substituted carbazoles. Substrate scope reveals a broad tolerability toward the substitution on aryl groups.

Abstract
A diastereoselective three-component reaction between alkynyl enones, aldehydes and secondary amines is reported. With the aid of a benign indium catalyst, a range of highly substituted cyclopenta[c]furan derivatives can be obtained in a single-step procedure. The formation of the stereodefined heterocyclic motifs takes place via in situ generation of enamines followed by two sequential cyclization steps.

Abstract
This paper describes a novel synthesis of highly functionalized and diverse carbazoles via transition-metal-free and mild base-promoted condensations of readily available 2-nitrocinnamaldehyde or 2-nitrochalcones with various β-ketoesters or 1,3-diaryl-2-propanones. The method selectively forms four bonds by the intramolecular conjugate addition of an enolate to the enal or chalcone bearing an o-nitro group. This group then undergoes in situ N-O bond cleavage under non-reductive conditions in a one-pot procedure. This protocol allows for the introduction of various functional groups at all positions of the newly formed aromatic ring of the carbazole moiety. The utility of this methodology is further illustrated by the concise synthesis of naturally occurring hyellazole and chlorohyellazole.

Abstract
As a continuation of our studies on 2-phenylindol-3-ylglyoxylamides as potent and selective translocator protein (TSPO) ligands, two subsets of novel derivatives, featuring hydrophilic group (OH, NH2, COOH) at the para-position of the pendent 2-phenyl ring (8-16) or different 2-aryl moieties, namely, 3-thienyl, p-biphenyl, 2-naphthyl (23-35), were synthesized and biologically evaluated, some of them showing Ki values in the subnanomolar range and the 2-naphthyl group performance being the best. The resulting SARs confirmed the key role played by interactions taking place between ligands and the lipophilic L1 pocket of the TSPO binding site. Docking simulations were performed on the most potent compound of the present series (29) exploiting the recently available 3D structures of TSPO bound to its standard ligand (PK11195). Our theoretical model was fully consistent with SARs of the newly investigated as well of the previously reported 2-phenylindol-3-ylglyoxylamide derivatives.

Abstract
A novel class of metal-free organic dyes based on benzo[a]carbazole have been designed, synthesized, and used in dye-sensitized solar cells for the first time. These types of dyes consisted of a cyanoacrylic acid moiety as the electron acceptor/anchoring group and different electron-rich spacers such as thiophene (JY21), furan (JY22), and oligothiophene (JY23) as the π-linkers. The photophysical, electrochemical, and photovoltaic properties, as well as theoretical calculations of these dyes were investigated. The photovoltaic performances of these dyes were found to be highly relevant to the π-conjugated linkers. In particular, dye JY23 exhibited a broad IPCE response with a photocurrent signal up to about 740 nm covering the most region of the UV-visible light. A DSSC based on JY23 showed the best photovoltaic performance with a Jsc of 14.8 mA cm(-2), a Voc of 744 mV, and a FF of 0.68, achieving a power conversion efficiency of 7.54% under standard AM 1.5 G irradiation.

Abstract
Facile syntheses of imperative carbazole alkaloids carbazomycin A, carbazomycin B, hyellazole, chlorohyellazole, and clausenaline D have been demonstrated starting from readily available Boc-protected 3-formylindole and dimethyl maleate. The suitably substituted aromatic rings have been designed comprising three/four significant C-C bond forming reactions. The competent Wittig reaction, selective monoalkylations, one-pot regioselective Weinreb amide formation and Boc-deprotection, well designed Grignard reactions, dehydrative intramolecular cyclizations, and Baeyer-Villiger rearrangement of aromatic aldehydes were the main features.
