Synthesis of Stable Nanographenes with OBO-Doped Zigzag Edges Based on Tandem Demethylation-Electrophilic Borylation

Rhodium-Catalyzed Highly Diastereo- and Enantioselective Synthesis of a Configurationally Stable S-Shaped Double Helicene-Like Molecule

An S-shaped double helicene-like molecule (>99 % ee), possessing stable helical chirality, has been synthesized by the rhodium(I)/difluorphos complex-catalyzed highly diastereo- and enantioselective intramolecular double [2+2+2] cycloaddition of a 2-naphthol- and benzene-linked hexayne. The collision between two terminal naphthalene rings destabilizes the helical chirality of the S-shaped double helicene-like molecule, but the introduction of two additional fused benzene rings significantly increases the configurational stability. Thus, no epimerization and racemization were observed even at 100 °C. The enantiopure S-shaped double helicene-like molecule forms a trimer through the multiple C-H⋅⋅⋅π and C-H⋅⋅⋅O interactions in the solid-state. The trimers stack to form columnar packing structures, in which neighboring stacks have opposite dipole directions. The accumulation of helical structures in the same direction in the S-shaped double helicene-like molecule enhanced the chiroptical properties.

Vibrationally resolved electronic circular dichroism and circularly polarized luminescence spectra of a boron-fused double helicene: A theoretical study

In this work, we present the theoretical study of the vibrationally resolved absorption (ABS), electronic circular dichroism (ECD), emission (EMI), and circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) spectra of a boron-fused double helicene, with a detailed and complete discussion of the alternative possible approximate methods. Given the fact that few examples of CPL calculations exist, the potential energy surfaces (PESs) have been constructed and compared with Adiabatic (AH) and Vertical Hessian (VH) models. All the vibronic calculations have accounted for Duschinsky mixings, Franck-Condon (FC) effect and Herzberg-Teller (HT) contribution. Moreover, different HT expansions have been checked and compared, by computing the derivatives of the electric and magnetic dipole transition moments around the equilibrium geometries of the initial and final states. Our results show that both AH and VH models have well reproduced the experimental vibronic structures and VH model shows a better performance in the simulation of spectral lineshapes. They also show that HT effects dominate the shapes of EMI and CPL, tuning the relative heights of the different vibronic peaks, improving the agreement with the experiment for EMI. Moreover, HT effects are the main reason for the mirror-symmetry breaking between ECD and CPL spectra. Furthermore, interesting interference effects between FC and HT contributions have also been addressed.

Charging OBO-Fused Double [5]Helicene with Electrons

Chemical reduction of OBO-fused double[5]helicene with Group 1 metals (Na and K) has been investigated for the first time. Two doubly-reduced products have been isolated and structurally characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction, revealing a solvent-separated ion triplet (SSIT) with Na+ ions and a contact-ion pair (CIP) with K+ ion. As the key structural outcome, the X-ray crystallographic analysis discloses the consequences of adding two electrons to the double helicene core in the SSIT without metal binding and reveals the preferential binding site in the CIP with K+ counterions. In both products, an increase in the twisting of the double helicene core upon charging was observed. The negative charge localization at the central core has been identified by theoretical calculations, which are in full agreement with X-ray crystallographic and NMR spectroscopic results. Notably, it was confirmed that the two-electron reduction of OBO-fused double[5]helicene is reversible.

Heteroatom-Doped Nanographenes with Structural Precision

Nanographenes, which are defined as nanoscale (1–100 nm) graphene cutouts, include quasi-one-dimensional graphene nanoribbons (GNRs) and quasi-zero-dimensional graphene quantum dots (GQDs). Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) larger than 1 nm can be viewed as GQDs with atomically precise molecular structures and can thus be termed nanographene molecules. As a result of quantum confinement, nanographenes are promising for next-generation semiconductor applications with finite band gaps, a significant advantage compared with gapless two-dimensional graphene. Similar to the atomic doping strategy in inorganic semiconductors, incorporation of heteroatoms into nanographenes is a viable way to tune their optical, electronic, catalytic, and magnetic properties. Such properties are highly dependent not only on the molecular size and edge structure but also on the heteroatom type, doping position, and concentration. Therefore, reliable synthetic methods are required to precisely control these structural features. In this regard, bottom-up organic synthesis provides an indispensable way to achieve structurally well-defined heteroatom-doped nanographenes.

Polycyclic heteroaromatic compounds have attracted great attention of organic chemists for decades. Research in this direction has been further promoted by modern interest in supramolecular chemistry and organic electronics. The rise of graphene in the 21st century has endowed large polycyclic heteroaromatic compounds with a new role as model systems for heteroatom-doped graphene. Heteroatom-doped nanographene molecules are in their own right promising materials for photonic, optoelectronic, and spintronic applications because of the extended π conjugation. Despite the significant advances in polycyclic heteroaromatic compounds, heteroatom-doped nanographene molecules with sizes of over 1 nm and their relevant GNRs are still scarce.

In this Account, we describe the synthesis and properties of large heteroatom-doped nanographenes, mainly summarizing relevant advances in our group in the past decade. We first present several examples of heteroatom doping based on the prototypical nanographene molecule, i.e., hexa-peri-hexabenzocoronene (HBC), including nitrogen-doped HBC analogues by formal replacement of benzene with other heterocycles (e.g., aromatic pyrimidine and pyrrole and antiaromatic pyrazine) and sulfur-doped nanographene molecules via thiophene annulation. We then introduce heteroatom-doped zigzag edges and a variety of zigzag-edged nanographene molecules incorporating nitrogen, boron, and oxygen atoms. We finally summarize heteroatom-doped GNRs based on the success in the molecular cases. We hope that this Account will further stimulate the synthesis and applications of heteroatom-doped nanographenes with a combined effort from different disciplines.

Boronate- and borinate-based π-systems for blue thermally activated delayed fluorescence materials

Blue thermally activated delayed fluorescence emitters based on boronate-ester, -thioester, and borinate-ester were developed.

Soluble Twisted Diarenoperylenes: Synthesis, Characterization, and Device Performance

Two stable TIPS-ethynyl functionalized polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), dibenzo[ a, j]perylene (TIPS-DBP), and dinaphtho[ a, j]perylene (TIPS-DNP), which contain two rows of linear acenes joined by benzene rings, have been synthesized and characterized. It is found that the two twisted PAHs easily form one-dimensional charge-transport systems with short C-C contacts. The crystal of TIPS-DBP shows a hole mobility up to 0.17 cm² V^-1s^-1, while the crystal of TIPS-DNP shows a hole mobility up to 0.74 cm² V^-1 s^-1.

Synthesis, Characterization, and Functionalization of 1-Boraphenalenes

1-Boraphenalenes have been synthesized by reaction of BBr3 with 1-(aryl-ethynyl)naphthalenes, 1-ethynylnaphthalene, and 1-(pent-1-yn-1-yl)naphthalene and they can be selectively functionalized at boron or carbon to form bench-stable products. All of these 1-boraphenalenes have LUMOs localized on the planar C12 B core that are closely comparable in character to isoelectronic phenalenyl cations. In contrast to the comparable LUMOs, the aromatic stabilization of the C5 B ring in 1-boraphenalenes is dramatically lower than the C6 rings in phenalenyl cations. This is due to the occupied orbitals of π symmetry being less delocalised in the 1-boraphenalenes.

Topology and Electronic Density Driven Generation of Alkali Cation Complexes

The formation and characterization of K⁺ and Cs⁺ complexes originating from the cooperativity of three non-covalent interactions is explored. The tridimensional preorganization of the naphthothiophene platform displays a favorable well-defined bay region combining a π fragment and a carbonyl moiety flanking a central sulfur atom. A joint theoretical and experimental infrared multiple photon dissociation (IRMPD) study allowed deciphering the key contribution of the orthogonal phenyl fragment to the elaboration of alkali metal complexes. In combination with S and CO interactions, the π-cation interaction significantly enhances the binding energies of naphthothiophene derivatives.

Toward Full Zigzag-Edged Nanographenes: peri-Tetracene and Its Corresponding Circumanthracene

Zigzag-edged nanographene with two rows of fused linear acenes, called as n- peri-acene (n-PA), is considered as a potential building unit in the arena of organic electronics. n-PAs with four ( peri-tetracene, 4-PA), five ( peri-pentacene, 5-PA) or more benzene rings in a row have been predicted to show open-shell character, which would be attractive for the development of unprecedented molecular spintronics. However, solution-based synthesis of open-shell n-PA has thus far not been successful because of the poor chemical stability. Herein we demonstrated the synthesis and characterization of the hitherto unknown 4-PA by a rational strategy in which steric protection of the zigzag edges playing a pivotal role. The obtained 4-PA possesses a singlet biradical character ( y₀ = 72%) and exhibits remarkable persistent stability with a half-life time ( t_1/2) of ∼3 h under ambient conditions. UV-vis-NIR and electrochemical measurements reveal a narrow optical/electrochemical energy gap (1.11 eV) for 4-PA. Moreover, the bay regions of 4-PA enable the efficient 2-fold Diels-Alder reaction, yielding a novel full zigzag-edged circumanthracene.

Aromatic metamorphosis: conversion of an aromatic skeleton into a different ring system

Aromatic skeletons are generally regarded as being uncleavable because of their aromatic stabilization energy. Compared to exocyclic functionalizations of aromatic compounds, much less attention has been paid to substitutions of endocyclic atoms in aromatic cores through partial disassembly of the cyclic skeletons and subsequent ring reconstruction. In this Feature Article, we describe our endeavours to establish "aromatic metamorphosis", where general aromatic compounds such as dibenzothiophenes, dibenzofurans, and benzofurans are transformed into different ring systems using a multi-step strategy or ideally in one step.

Non-Planar [n]Cyclo-1,8-carbazolylenes (n=3,4,6) and [3]Cyclo-1,8-carbazolylenyl B, P, PO, SiPh Complexes

A new family of non-planar heterocyclic molecules consisting of carbazoles was created. A bowl-shaped cyclodimer, a flake-shaped cyclotrimer, a double-decker-ring-shaped cyclotetramer and a cyclohexamer were synthesized by Ni⁰ -mediated one-shot cyclo-oligomerization of 1,8-dibromocarbazole, and were named [n]cyclo-1,8-carbazolylenes (n=3,4,6). [3]Cyclo-1,8-carbazolylene was found to act as a trivalent tridentate ligand for heteroatoms (B, P, Si), giving flake-shaped complexes. The boron derivative acted as a Lewis acid, and the tetra-coordinated complexes showed an unprecedented red-shift of absorption and emission spectra by the coordination. The synthetic method, the distorted C₂ or C₁ symmetric shape, the trivalent tridentate coordination ability and the kinds of introduced heteroatoms of [3]cyclo-1,8-carbazolylenes, the electronic structure, the photophysical property, and the Lewis acidity were distinct from those of related subporphyrins/subphthalocyanines.

Manganese-Catalyzed Ring Opening of Benzofurans and Its Application to Insertion of Heteroatoms into the C2-O Bond

A new class of aromatic metamorphosis in which benzofurans are converted into diverse six-membered oxaheterocycles has been developed. This transformation is composed of two reactions in one pot: manganese-catalyzed arylative or alkylative ring-opening of benzofurans affording dianionic intermediates and subsequent trapping with multivalent heteroatom electrophiles. Various electrophiles containing silicon, boron, phosphorus, germanium, and titanium could be applied to this heteroatom insertion.

Synthesis, properties, and crystal structures of π-extended double [6]helicenes: contorted multi-dimensional stacking lattice

Synthesis, structures, packing modes, and electronic properties of two π-extended double helicene molecules are described.
