Abstract
Introducing transition metals into frustrated Lewis pair systems has attracted considerable attention in recent years. Here we report a selection of three metal-only frustrated systems based on Au(I)/Pt(0) combinations and their reactivity toward alkynes. We have inspected the activation of acetylene and phenylacetylene. The gold(I) fragments are stabilized by three bulky phosphines bearing terphenyl groups. We have observed that subtle modifications on the substituents of these ligands proved critical in controlling the regioselectivity of acetylene activation and the product distribution resulting from C(sp)-H cleavage of phenylacetylene. A mechanistic picture based on experimental observations and computational analysis is provided. As a result of the cooperative action of the two metals of the frustrated pairs, several uncommon heterobimetallic structures have been characterized.

Abstract
A joint experimental/computational effort to elucidate the mechanism of dihydrogen activation by a gold(I)/platinum(0) metal-only frustrated Lewis pair (FLP) is described herein. The drastic effects on H2 activation derived from subtle ligand modifications have also been investigated. The importance of the balance between bimetallic adduct formation and complete frustration has been interrogated, providing for the first time evidence for genuine metal-only FLP reactivity in solution. The origin of a strong inverse kinetic isotopic effect has also been clarified, offering further support for the proposed bimetallic FLP-type cleavage of dihydrogen.

Abstract
Rare-earth metal cations have been used rarely as Lewis-acidic components in the chemistry of frustrated Lewis pairs (FLPs). Herein, we report the first cerium/phosphorus system (2) employing a heptadentate N4 P3 ligand, which exhibits triple FLP-type reactivity towards a series of organic substrates, including isocyanates, isothiocyanates, diazomethane, and azides on a single rare-earth Lewis acidic Ce center. This result shows that the Ce center and three P atoms in 2 could simultaneously activate three equivalents of small molecules under mild conditions. This study broadens the diversity of FLPs and demonstrates that rare earth based FLP exhibit unique properties compared with other FLP systems.

Abstract
Indole derivatives are associated with a variety of both biological activities and applications in the field of material chemistry. A number of different strategies for synthesizing substituted indoles by means of the reactions of indolylboronic acids with electrophilic compounds are considered the methods of choice for modifying indoles because indolylboronic acids are easily available, stable, non-toxic and new reactions using indolylboronic acids have been described in the literature. Thus, the aim of this review is to summarize the methods available for the preparation of indolylboronic acids as well as their chemical transformations. The review covers the period 2010-2019.

Abstract
The study of main-group molecules that behave and react similarly to transition-metal (TM) complexes has attracted significant interest in recent decades. Most notably, the attractive idea of replacing the all-too-often rare and costly metals from catalysis has motivated efforts to develop main-group-element-mediated reactions. Main-group elements, however, lack the electronic flexibility of TM complexes that arises from combinations of empty and filled d orbitals and that seem ideally suited to bind and activate many substrates. In this review, we look at boron, an element that despite its nonmetal nature, low atomic weight, and relative redox staticity has achieved great milestones in terms of TM-like reactivity. We show how in interelement cooperative systems, diboron molecules, and hypovalent complexes the fifth element can acquire a truly metallomimetic character. As we discuss, this character is powerfully demonstrated by the reactivity of boron-based molecules with H2, CO, alkynes, alkenes and even with N2.

Abstract
Three polymeric versions of ansa-N,N-dialkylammoniumtrifluoroborate ambiphilic molecules based on the styrene motif (poly(1-NMe2H+-2-BF3--4-styrene) (P-Me), poly(1-NEt2H+-2-BF3--4-styrene) (P-Et) and poly(1-piperidinyl-H+-2-BF3--4-styrene) (P-Pip)) were synthesized, characterized and tested as heterogeneous pre-catalysts for the borylation of electron-rich heteroarenes. These heterogeneous versions of previously reported pre-catalysts show similar reactivity patterns and represent the first examples of solid-supported FLP metal-free catalysts for the C-H borylation of heteroarenes.

Abstract
Diboron reagents have been traditionally regarded as "Lewis acids", which can react with simple Lewis base to create a significant nucleophilic character in one of boryl moieties. In particular, bis(pinacolato)diboron (B₂pin₂) reacts with simple Lewis bases, such as N-heterocyclic carbenes (NHCs), phosphines and alkoxides. This review focuses on the application of trivalent nucleophilic boryl synthon in the selective preparation of organoboron compounds, mainly through metal-free catalytic diboration and the β-boration reactions of alkynes and alkenes.

Abstract
We report the first example of catalytic dearomatization of indoles to generate 3-borylindolines using metal-free borane catalysts.
While the dearomatization of indoles by carbon–boron bond forming reactions is new and quite promising, they are so far mainly metal-catalyzed. Here, we establish the use of metal-free catalysts in promoting such reactions in an atom-efficient way. The in situ generated ambiphilic aminoborane catalyst (1-Pip-2-BH2-C6H4)2 (Pip = piperidyl) promotes borylative dearomatization of various 1-arylsulfonyl indoles with pinacolborane in a syn addition fashion, with H and Bpin groups added respectively to the 2 and 3 positions of indoles. Catalysis proceeds with good to excellent conversion and essentially with complete regio- and diastereoselectivity. From mechanistic insights and DFT computations, we realized and established that prototypical boranes can also catalyze this borylative dearomatization.

Abstract
N-Propargyltetramethylpiperidine reacts with a series of trans-alkenyl-B(C6F5)2 compounds to give the substituted alkenyl-bridged frustrated N/B Lewis pairs 5. Their structures and spectroscopic features indicate a pronounced participation of the mesomeric s-trans-iminium/borata-alkene resonance form. The compounds are thought to be formed in a stepwise addition/rearrangement process which is initiated by a trans-1,2-amine/borane FLP addition to the carbon-carbon triple bond to generate a reactive zwitterionic aziridinium/alkenylborate intermediate. Subsequent alkenylborate attack leads to opening of the activated three-membered heterocycle with clean formation of the products 5a-c. Treatment of the propargyl-TMP substrate with B(C6F5)3 gave a stable example of such an aziridinium/borate betaine, which was isolated and amply characterized. The products 5a-c are active N/B FLPs. They split dihydrogen heterolytically under mild conditions to give the respective NH+/BH- products 9a-c. These contain Z-configurated core C═C double bonds, which indicates rotational equilibration around the central C-C bond of 5a-c during this reaction. Structural and chemical features of the 5c system were analyzed by DFT calculations.

Abstract
Ambiphilic molecules were first used as functional ligands for transition elements, which could enable intriguing organometallic transformations. In the past decade, these intramolecular Lewis pairs, first considered organometallic curiosities, have become staples in organometallic chemistry and catalysis, acting as Z ligands, activating inert molecules using the concept of frustrated Lewis pair (FLP) chemistry, and acting as metal-free catalysts. In this Account, we detail our contribution to this blossoming field of research, focusing on the use of ambiphilic molecules as metal-free catalysts for CO2 reduction and C-H borylation reactions. A major emphasis is put on the mechanistic investigations we carried out using reactivity studies and theoretical tools, which helped us steer our research from stoichiometric transformations to highly active catalytic processes. We first report the interaction of aluminum-phosphine ambiphilic molecules with carbon dioxide. Although these Lewis pairs can bind CO2, a study of the deactivation process in the presence of CO2 and hydroboranes led us to discover that simple phosphinoborane molecules could act as active precatalysts for the hydroboration of carbon dioxide into methanol precursors. In these systems, the Lewis basic sites interact with the reducing agents rather than with the electrophilic carbon of CO2, increasing the nucleophilicity of hydroboranes. Simultaneously, the weak Lewis acids stabilize the oxygen of the gas molecule in the transition state, leading to high reaction rates. Replacing the phosphine by an amine leads to a system enabling CO2 hydrogenation, albeit only in stoichiometric transformations. Investigation of the protodeborylation deactivation of aminoboranes led us to develop metal-free catalysts for the C-H borylation of heteroarenes. By protecting the Lewis acid sites of these catalysts using fluoride, we were able to synthesize practical, air-stable precatalysts allowing the convenient synthesis of heteroarylboronic esters on a multigram scale. Contrary to general perception of FLP chemistry, we also demonstrated that a significant increase in activity could be obtained by reducing the steric bulk around the active site. These smaller systems exist as stable dimers and are more energetically costly to dissociate into active FLPs, but the approach of the substrate and the C-H activation step are significantly favored compared to the bulkier analogues. An in-depth study of the stability and reactivity of these aminoborane molecules also allowed us to develop a metal-free catalytic S-H bond borylation system, and to report stoichiometric and spontaneous B-B bond formation and Csp3-H bond activation processes, highlighting the importance of H2 release as a thermodynamic driving force in these FLP transformations.

Abstract
This study presents new mechanistic insights into the frustrated Lewis pairs (FLPs) catalyzed C-H activation of heteroarenes. Besides the generally accepted concerted C-H activation, a novel stepwise carbene type pathway is proposed as an alternative mechanism. The reaction mechanisms can be varied by tuning the distance between Lewis acid and Lewis base due to catalyst-substrate match. These results should expand the understanding of the structure and function of FLPs for catalyzed C-H activation.

Abstract
Without the addition of any additives and production of any small molecules, C3-borylated indoles and transfer hydrogenated indolines have been simultaneously achieved by a B(C6F5)3-catalyzed disproportionation reaction of a broad range of indoles with catecholborane. This catalyst system exhibits excellent catalytic performance for practical applications, such as easy scale-up under solvent-free conditions and long catalytic lifetime over ten sequential additions of starting materials. A combined mechanistic study, including isolation and characterization of key reaction intermediates, analysis of the disproportionation nature of the reaction, in situ NMR of the reaction, and analysis of detailed experimental data, has led to a possible reaction mechanism which illustrates pathways for the formation of both major products and byproducts. Understanding the reaction mechanism enables us to successfully suppress side reactions by choosing appropriate substrates and adjusting the amount of catecholborane needed. More importantly, with an elevated reaction temperature, we could achieve the convergent disproportionation reaction of indoles, in which indolines were continuously oxidized to indoles for the next disproportionation catalytic cycle. Near quantitative conversions and up to 98% yields of various C3-selective borylated indoles were achieved, without any additives or H2 acceptors.
