Abstract
A new family of hexanuclear titanium(iv)-oxo-carboxylate cluster K7H[Ti6O9(ida)6]Cl2·13H2O {Ti6O9} has been synthesized via the H2O2-assisted reaction between TiCl4 and iminodiacetate ligands. This cluster was fully characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction and a wide range of analytical methods, including FT-IR, UV/vis spectroscopy as well as electrochemistry and thermogravimetric analysis. As a new type of carboxylate substituted Ti-oxo-cluster, the structural motif of the {Ti6O9} cluster consists of one symmetric {Ti6O6} hexagonal prism with two staggered triangular {Ti3O3} subunits linked by three μ2-O bridges. The {Ti6O9} polyanions are linked by K(+) cations to form a novel 3D architecture. The structural information and stability of the {Ti6O9} polyanion in aqueous solution were thoroughly investigated by solid-state/solution NMR, ESI-MS spectroscopy. Moreover, this Ti-oxo cluster exhibits remarkable potential as a visible-light homogeneous photocatalyst for degradation of rhodamine B (RhB). Finally, a proposed peroxotitanium(iv)-mediated photocatalytic pathway involved is illustrated by spectroscopic data.

Abstract
Group IV and V framework-substituted zeolites have been used for olefin epoxidation reactions for decades, yet the underlying properties that determine the selectivities and turnover rates of these catalysts have not yet been elucidated. Here, a combination of kinetic, thermodynamic, and in situ spectroscopic measurements show that when group IV (i.e., Ti, Zr, and Hf) or V (i.e., Nb and Ta) transition metals are substituted into zeolite *BEA, the metals that form stronger Lewis acids give greater selectivities and rates for the desired epoxidation pathway and present smaller enthalpic barriers for both epoxidation and H2O2 decomposition reactions. In situ UV-vis spectroscopy shows that these group IV and V materials activate H2O2 to form pools of hydroperoxide, peroxide, and superoxide intermediates. Time-resolved UV-vis measurements and the isomeric distributions of Z-stilbene epoxidation products demonstrate that the active species for epoxidations on group IV and V transition metals are only M-OOH/-(O2)2- and M-(O2)- species, respectively. Mechanistic interpretations of kinetic data suggest that these group IV and V materials catalyze cyclohexene epoxidation and H2O2 decomposition through largely identical Eley-Rideal mechanisms that involve the irreversible activation of coordinated H2O2 followed by reaction with an olefin or H2O2. Epoxidation rates and selectivities vary over five- and two-orders of magnitude, respectively, among these catalysts and depend exponentially on the energy for ligand-to-metal charge transfer (LMCT) and the functional Lewis acid strength of the metal centers. Together, these observations show that more electrophilic active-oxygen species (i.e., lower-energy LMCT) are more reactive and selective for epoxidations of electron-rich olefins and explain why Ti-based catalysts have been identified as the most active among early transition metals for these reactions. Further, H2O2 decomposition (the undesirable reaction pathway) possesses a weaker dependence on Lewis acidity than epoxidation, which suggests that the design of catalysts with increased Lewis acid strength will simultaneously increase the reactivity and selectivity of olefin epoxidation.

Abstract
The layered titanium oxide is a useful and unique precursor for the facile and rapid preparation of the peroxide layered titanium oxide H1.07Ti1.73O4·nH2O (HTO) crystal with enhanced visible light photoactivity. The H2O2 molecules as peroxide chemicals rapidly enter into the interlayers of HTO crystal, and coordinate with Ti within TiO6 octahedron to form a mass of Ti-O-O coordination bond in the interlayers. The introduction of these Ti-O-O coordination bonds result in lowering the band gap of HTO, and promoting the separation efficiency of the photo induced electron–hole pairs. Meanwhile, the photocatalytic investigation indicates that such peroxide HTO crystal has the enhanced photocatalytic performance for RhB degradation and water splitting to generate oxygen under visible light irradiating.

Abstract
This review addresses the most relevant aspects of vibrational spectroscopies (IR, Raman and INS) applied to zeolites and zeotype materials. Surface Brønsted and Lewis acidity and surface basicity are treated in detail. The role of probe molecules and the relevance of tuning both the proton affinity and the steric hindrance of the probe to fully understand and map the complex site population present inside microporous materials are critically discussed. A detailed description of the methods needed to precisely determine the IR absorption coefficients is given, making IR a quantitative technique. The thermodynamic parameters of the adsorption process that can be extracted from a variable-temperature IR study are described. Finally, cutting-edge space- and time-resolved experiments are reviewed. All aspects are discussed by reporting relevant examples. When available, the theoretical literature related to the reviewed experimental results is reported to support the interpretation of the vibrational spectra on an atomic level.

Abstract
The oxidation of As(III) (arsenite) to As(V) (arsenate), a critical pretreatment process for total arsenic removal, is easily achieved using chemical oxidation methods. Hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) is widely used as an environmentally benign oxidant but its practical use for the arsenite oxidation is limited by the strong pH dependence and slow oxidation kinetics. This study demonstrated that H2O2-induced oxidation of As(III) can be markedly enhanced in the presence of nonferrous metal oxides (e.g., WO3, TiO2, ZrO2) as a heterogeneous catalyst working over a wide pH range in ambient reaction conditions. In particular, TiO2 is an ideal catalyst because it is not only active and stable but also easily available and inexpensive. Although the photocatalytic oxidation of As(III) on TiO2 was intensively studied, the thermal catalytic activities of TiO2 and other nonferrous metal oxides for the arsenic oxidation have been little investigated. The heterogeneous oxidation rate increased with increasing the TiO2 surface area and [H2O2] and weakly depended on pH whereas the homogeneous oxidation by H2O2 alone was favored only at alkaline condition. The oxidation rate in the TiO2/H2O2 system was not reduced at all in the absence of dioxygen. It was not retarded at all by OH radical scavengers but markedly inhibited by hydroperoxyl radical scavengers. It is proposed that the surface complexation of H2O2 on TiO2 induces the generation of the surface hydroperoxyl radical through an inner-sphere electron transfer, which subsequently reacts with As(III). The catalytic activity of TiO2 was maintained without showing any sign of deactivation. The heterogeneous catalytic oxidation is proposed as a viable method for the preoxidation treatment of As(III)-contaminated water under ambient conditions.

Abstract
This Progress Report discusses the chemical sensitivity of Kβ valence to core X-ray emission spectroscopy (vtc-XES) and its applications for investigating 3d-transition-metal based materials. Vtc-XES can be used for ligand identification and for the characterization of the valence electronic levels. The technique provides information that is similar to valence band photoemission spectroscopy but the sample environment can be chosen freely and thus allows measurements in presence of gases and liquids and it can be applied for measurements under in situ/operando or extreme conditions. The theoretical basis of the technique is presented using a one-electron approach and the vtc-XES spectral features are interpreted using ground state density functional theory calculations. Some recent results obtained by vtc-XES in various scientific fields are discussed to demonstrate the potential and future applications of this technique. Resonant X-ray emission spectroscopy is briefly introduced with some applications for the study of 3d and 5d-transition-metal based systems.

Abstract
In the last decade, research concerning nanoporous siliceous materials has been focused on mesoporous materials with intrinsic zeolitic features. These materials are thought to be superior, because they are able to combine (i) the enhanced diffusion and accessibility for larger molecules and viscous fluids typical of mesoporous materials with (ii) the remarkable stability, catalytic activity and selectivity of zeolites. This review gives an overview of the state of the art concerning combined zeolitic/mesoporous materials. Focus is put on the synthesis and the applications of the combined zeolitic/mesoporous materials. The different synthesis approaches and formation mechanisms leading to these materials are comprehensively discussed and compared. Moreover, Ti-containing nanoporous materials as redox catalysts are discussed to illustrate a potential implementation of combined zeolitic/mesoporous materials.

Abstract
We present an application of valence to core X-ray emission spectroscopy to understand the electronic structure of the industrially relevant catalyst titanium silicalite-1. The experimental spectrum was modelled within density functional theory, adopting a one electron approach, investigating the effects of different basis sets, density functionals and cluster sizes. The description of titanium silicalite-1 valence states follows the Kohn-Sham evaluation of the molecular orbitals involved in the computed transitions.
