Excited-State Processes in the Carotenoid Zeaxanthin after Excess Energy Excitation

A mechanism of energy dissipation in cyanobacteria

When grown under a variety of stress conditions, cyanobacteria express the isiA gene, which encodes the IsiA pigment-protein complex. Overexpression of the isiA gene under iron-depletion stress conditions leads to the formation of large IsiA aggregates, which display remarkably short fluorescence lifetimes and thus a strong capacity to dissipate energy. In this work we investigate the underlying molecular mechanism responsible for chlorophyll fluorescence quenching. Femtosecond transient absorption spectroscopy allowed us to follow the process of energy dissipation in real time. The light energy harvested by chlorophyll pigments migrated within the system and eventually reaches a quenching site where the energy is transferred to a carotenoid-excited state, which dissipates it by decaying to the ground state. We compare these findings with those obtained for the main light-harvesting complex in green plants (light-harvesting complex II) and artificial light-harvesting antennas, and conclude that all of these systems show the same mechanism of energy dissipation, i.e., one or more carotenoids act as energy dissipators by accepting energy via low-lying singlet-excited S(1) states and dissipating it as heat.

Ultrafast Time-resolved Absorption Spectroscopy of Geometric Isomers of Carotenoids

The structures of a number of stereoisomers of carotenoids have been revealed in three-dimensional X-ray crystallographic investigations of pigment-protein complexes from photosynthetic organisms. Despite these structural elucidations, the reason for the presence of stereoisomers in these systems is not well understood. An important unresolved issue is whether the natural selection of geometric isomers of carotenoids in photosynthetic pigment-protein complexes is determined by the structure of the protein binding site or by the need for the organism to accomplish a specific physiological task. The association of cis isomers of a carotenoid with reaction centers and trans isomers of the same carotenoid with light-harvesting pigment-protein complexes has led to the hypothesis that the stereoisomers play distinctly different physiological roles. A systematic investigation of the photophysics and photochemistry of purified, stable geometric isomers of carotenoids is needed to understand if a relationship between stereochemistry and biological function exists. In this work we present a comparative study of the spectroscopy and excited state dynamics of cis and trans isomers of three different open-chain carotenoids in solution. The molecules are neurosporene (n=9), spheroidene (n=10), and spirilloxanthin (n=13), where n is the number of conjugated pi-electron double bonds. The spectroscopic experiments were carried out on geometric isomers of the carotenoids purified by high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) and then frozen to 77 K to inhibit isomerization. The spectral data taken at 77 K provide a high resolution view of the spectroscopic differences between geometric isomers. The kinetic data reveal that the lifetime of the lowest excited singlet state of a cis-isomer is consistently shorter than that of its corresponding all-trans counterpart despite the fact that the excited state energy of the cis molecule is typically higher than that of the trans molecule. Quantum theoretical calculations on an n=9 linear polyene were carried out to examine this process. The calculations indicate that the electronic coupling terms are significantly higher for the cis isomer, and when combined with the Franck-Condon factors, predict internal conversion rates roughly double those of the all-trans species. The electronic effects more than offset the decrease in coupling efficiencies associated with the higher system origin energies and explain the observed shorter cis isomer lifetimes.

Ultrafast time-resolved carotenoid to-bacteriochlorophyll energy transfer in LH2 complexes from photosynthetic bacteria

Steady-state and ultrafast time-resolved optical spectroscopic investigations have been carried out at 293 and 10 K on LH2 pigment-protein complexes isolated from three different strains of photosynthetic bacteria: Rhodobacter (Rb.) sphaeroides G1C, Rb. sphaeroides 2.4.1 (anaerobically and aerobically grown), and Rps. acidophila 10050. The LH2 complexes obtained from these strains contain the carotenoids, neurosporene, spheroidene, spheroidenone, and rhodopin glucoside, respectively. These molecules have a systematically increasing number of pi-electron conjugated carbon-carbon double bonds. Steady-state absorption and fluorescence excitation experiments have revealed that the total efficiency of energy transfer from the carotenoids to bacteriochlorophyll is independent of temperature and nearly constant at approximately 90% for the LH2 complexes containing neurosporene, spheroidene, spheroidenone, but drops to approximately 53% for the complex containing rhodopin glucoside. Ultrafast transient absorption spectra in the near-infrared (NIR) region of the purified carotenoids in solution have revealed the energies of the S1 (2(1)Ag-)-->S2 (1(1)Bu+) excited-state transitions which, when subtracted from the energies of the S0 (1(1)Ag-)-->S2 (1(1)Bu+) transitions determined by steady-state absorption measurements, give precise values for the positions of the S1 (2(1)Ag-) states of the carotenoids. Global fitting of the ultrafast spectral and temporal data sets have revealed the dynamics of the pathways of de-excitation of the carotenoid excited states. The pathways include energy transfer to bacteriochlorophyll, population of the so-called S* state of the carotenoids, and formation of carotenoid radical cations (Car*+). The investigation has found that excitation energy transfer to bacteriochlorophyll is partitioned through the S1 (1(1)Ag-), S2 (1(1)Bu+), and S* states of the different carotenoids to varying degrees. This is understood through a consideration of the energies of the states and the spectral profiles of the molecules. A significant finding is that, due to the low S1 (2(1)Ag-) energy of rhodopin glucoside, energy transfer from this state to the bacteriochlorophylls is significantly less probable compared to the other complexes. This work resolves a long-standing question regarding the cause of the precipitous drop in energy transfer efficiency when the extent of pi-electron conjugation of the carotenoid is extended from ten to eleven conjugated carbon-carbon double bonds in LH2 complexes from purple photosynthetic bacteria.

Ultrafast time-resolved spectroscopy of xanthophylls at low temperature

Many of the spectroscopic features and photophysical properties of xanthophylls and their role in energy transfer to chlorophyll can be accounted for on the basis of a three-state model. The characteristically strong visible absorption of xanthophylls is associated with a transition from the ground state S0 (1(1)Ag-) to the S2 (1(1)Bu+) excited state. The lowest lying singlet state denoted S1 (2(1)Ag-), is a state into which absorption from the ground state is symmetry forbidden. Ultrafast optical spectroscopic studies and quantum computations have suggested the presence of additional excited singlet states in the vicinity of S1 (2(1)Ag-) and S2 (1(1)Bu+). One of these is denoted S* and has been suggested in previous work to be associated with a twisted molecular conformation of the molecule in the S1 (2(1)Ag-) state. In this work, we present the results of a spectroscopic investigation of three major xanthophylls from higher plants: violaxanthin, lutein, and zeaxanthin. These molecules have systematically increasing extents of pi-electron conjugation from nine to eleven conjugated carbon-carbon double bonds. All-trans isomers of the molecules were purified by high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) and studied by steady-state and ultrafast time-resolved optical spectroscopy at 77 K. Analysis of the data using global fitting techniques has revealed the inherent spectral properties and ultrafast dynamics of the excited singlet states of each of the molecules. Five different global fitting models were tested, and it was found that the data are best explained using a kinetic model whereby photoexcitation results in the promotion of the molecule into the S2 (1(1)Bu+) state that subsequently undergoes decay to a vibrationally hot S1 (1(1)Ag-) state and with the exception of violaxanthin also to the S* state. The vibrationally hot S1 (1(1)Ag-) state then cools to a vibrationally relaxed S1 (2(1)Ag-) state in less than a picosecond. It was also found that a portion of the S* population is converted into S1 (2(1)Ag-) during deactivation, but this process and the relative yield of S* was found to depend on temperature, consistent with it being associated with a twisted conformation of the xanthophyll. The results of the global fitting suggest that subpopulations of twisted conformers of xanthophylls already exist in the ground state prior to photoexcitation.

Theoretical description of femtosecond fluorescence depletion spectrum of molecules in solution

A theoretical model used for calculating the fluorescence depletion spectrum (FDS) of molecules in liquids induced by femtosecond pump-probe laser pulses is proposed based on the reduced density matrix theory. The FDS intensity is obtained by calculating the stimulated emission of the excited electronic state. As an application of the theoretical model, the FDS of oxazine 750 (OX-750) molecule in acetone solution is calculated. The simulated FDS agrees with the experimental result of Liu et al. [J. Y. Liu et al., J. Phys. Chem. A 107, 10857 (2003)]. The calculated vibrational relaxation rate is 2.5 ps(-1) for the OX-750 molecule. Vibrational population dynamics and wave packet evolution in the excited state are described in detail. The effect of the probe pulse parameter on the FDS is also discussed.

Effect of isomer geometry on the steady-state absorption spectra and femtosecond time-resolved dynamics of carotenoids

Steady-state absorption and femtosecond time-resolved optical spectroscopic studies have been carried out on all-trans-beta-carotene, 15,15'-cis-beta-carotene, all-trans-spheroidene, and 13,14-locked-cis-spheroidene. We examine in detail the effect of isomer geometry on the spectroscopic properties and photophysics of the low-lying S(1) (2(1)A(g)(-)) and S(2) (1(1)B(u)(+)) excited states of these molecules. The experiments on 13,14-locked-cis-spheroidene, a molecule incapable of undergoing cis-to-trans isomerization, provide a unique opportunity to examine the role of isomer geometry in controlling excited-state deactivation of carotenoids. The kinetic results have been obtained using both single wavelength transient absorption measurements and global fitting procedures. The overall scheme for the deactivation of these molecules after S(0) --> S(2) photon absorption is decay of S(2) to a vibrationally hot S(1) state, followed by vibrational relaxation within S(1), and finally, S(1) --> S(0) internal conversion back to the ground state. Changes in isomer geometry are shown to lead to small but noticeable alterations in the spectroscopic and kinetic behavior of the molecules. The effects are interpreted in terms of minor alterations in excited-state energy and vibrational coupling upon isomerization that bring about changes in the spectroscopic and kinetic behavior of this biologically important class of pigments.

Evidence for an Intramolecular Charge Transfer State in 12‘-Apo-β-caroten-12‘-al and 8‘-Apo-β-caroten-8‘-al: Influence of Solvent Polarity and Temperature

The ultrafast excited-state dynamics of two carbonyl-containing carotenoids, 12'-apo-beta-caroten-12'-al and 8'-apo-beta-caroten-8'-al, have been investigated by transient absorption spectroscopy in a systematic variation of solvent polarity and temperature. In most of the experiments, 12'-apo-beta-caroten-12'-al was excited at 430 nm and 8'-apo-beta-caroten-8'-al at 445 or 450 nm via the S0 --> S2 (11Ag- --> 11Bu+) transition. The excited-state dynamics were then probed at 860 nm for 12'-apo-beta-caroten-12'-al and at 890 or 900 nm for 8'-apo-beta-caroten-8'-al. The temporal evolution of all transient signals measured in this work can be characterized by an ultrafast decay of the S2 --> SN absorption at early times followed by the formation of a stimulated emission (SE) signal, which subsequently decays on a much slower time scale. We assign the SE signal to a low-lying electronic state of the apocarotenals with intramolecular charge-transfer character (ICT --> S0). This is the first time that the involvement of an ICT state has been detected in the excited-state dynamics of a carbonyl carotenoid in nonpolar solvents such as n-hexane or i-octane. The amplitude ratio of ICT-stimulated emission to S2 absorption was weaker in nonpolar solvents than in polar solvents. We interpret the results in terms of a kinetic model, where the S1 and ICT states are populated from S2 through an ultrafast excited-state branching reaction (tau2 < 120 fs). Delayed formation of a part of the stimulated emission is due to the transition S1 --> ICT (tau3 = 0.5-4.1 ps, depending on the solvent), which possibly involves a slower backward reaction ICT --> S1. Determinations of tau1 were carried out for a large set of solvents. Especially in 12'-apo-beta-caroten-12'-al, the final SE decay, assigned to the nonradiative relaxation ICT --> S0, was strongly dependent on solvent polarity, varying from tau1 = 200 ps in n-hexane to 6.6 ps in methanol. In the case of 8'-apo-beta-caroten-8'-al, corresponding values were 24.8 and 7.6 ps, respectively. This indicates an increasing stabilization of the ICT state with increasing solvent polarity, resulting in a decreasing ICT-S0 energy gap. Tuning the pump wavelength from the blue wing to the maximum of the S0 --> S2 absorption band resulted in no change of tau1 in acetone and methanol. Additional measurements in methanol after excitation in the red edge of the S0 --> S2 band (480-525 nm) also show an almost constant tau1 with only a 10% reduction at the largest probe wavelengths. The temperature dependence of the tau1 value of 12'-apo-beta-caroten-12'-al was well described by Arrhenius-type behavior. The extracted apparent activation energies for the ICT --> S0 transitions were in general small (on the order of a few times RT), which is in the range expected for a radiationless process.

Energy Transfer, Excited-State Deactivation, and Exciplex Formation in Artificial Caroteno-Phthalocyanine Light-Harvesting Antennas

We present results from transient absorption spectroscopy on a series of artificial light-harvesting dyads made up of a zinc phthalocyanine (Pc) covalently linked to carotenoids with 9, 10, or 11 conjugated carbon-carbon double bonds, referred to as dyads 1, 2, and 3, respectively. We assessed the energy transfer and excited-state deactivation pathways following excitation of the strongly allowed carotenoid S2 state as a function of the conjugation length. The S2 state rapidly relaxes to the S* and S1 states. In all systems we detected a new pathway of energy deactivation within the carotenoid manifold in which the S* state acts as an intermediate state in the S2-->S1 internal conversion pathway on a sub-picosecond time scale. In dyad 3, a novel type of collective carotenoid-Pc electronic state is observed that may correspond to a carotenoid excited state(s)-Pc Q exciplex. The exciplex is only observed upon direct carotenoid excitation and is nonfluorescent. In dyad 1, two carotenoid singlet excited states, S2 and S1, contribute to singlet-singlet energy transfer to Pc, making the process very efficient (>90%) while for dyads 2 and 3 the S1 energy transfer channel is precluded and only S2 is capable of transferring energy to Pc. In the latter two systems, the lifetime of the first singlet excited state of Pc is dramatically shortened compared to the 9 double-bond dyad and model Pc, indicating that the carotenoid acts as a strong quencher of the phthalocyanine excited-state energy.

Triplet state dynamics in peridinin-chlorophyll-a-protein: a new pathway of photoprotection in LHCs?

This work investigates the interaction of carotenoid and chlorophyll triplet states in the peridinin-chlorophyll-a-protein (PCP) of Amphidinium carterae using step-scan Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. We identify two carotenoid triplet state lifetimes of approximately 13 and approximately 42 mus in the spectral region between 1800 and 1100 cm(-1) after excitation of the 'blue' and 'red' peridinin (Per) conformers and the Q(y) of chlorophyll-a (Chl-a). The fast and slow decaying triplets exhibit different spectral signatures in the carbonyl region. The fast component generated at all excitation wavelengths is from a major conformer with a lactone stretching mode bleach at 1745 cm(-1). One (1720 cm(-1)) and two (1720 cm(-1) and 1741 cm(-1)) different Per conformers are observed for the slow component upon 670- and 530-480-nm excitation, respectively. The above result implies that (3)Per triplets are formed via two different pathways, corroborating and complementing visible triplet-singlet (T-S) spectra (Kleima et al., Biochemistry (2000), 39, 5184). Surprisingly, all difference spectra show that Per and Chl-a modes are simultaneously present during the (3)Per decay, implying significant involvement of (3)Chl-a in the (3)Per state. We suggest that this Per-Chl-a interaction via a delocalized triplet state lowers the (3)Per energy and thus provides a general, photoprotection mechanism for light-harvesting antenna complexes.

Ultrafast dynamics and excited state spectra of open-chain carotenoids at room and low temperatures

Many of the spectroscopic features and photophysical properties of carotenoids are explained using a three-state model in which the strong visible absorption of the molecules is associated with an S0 (1(1)Ag-) --> S2 (1(1)Bu+) transition, and the lowest lying singlet state, S1 (2(1)Ag-), is a state into which absorption from the ground state is forbidden by symmetry. However, semiempirical and ab initio quantum calculations have suggested additional excited singlet states may lie either between or in the vicinity of S1 (2(1)Ag-) and S2 (1(1)Bu+), and some ultrafast spectroscopic studies have reported evidence for these states. One such state, denoted S*, has been implicated as an intermediate in the depopulation of S2 (1(1)Bu+) and as a pathway for the formation of carotenoid triplet states in light-harvesting complexes. In this work, we present the results of an ultrafast, time-resolved spectroscopic investigation of a series of open-chain carotenoids derived from photosynthetic bacteria and systematically increasing in their number of pi-electron carbon-carbon double bonds (n). The molecules are neurosporene (n = 9), spheroidene (n = 10), rhodopin glucoside (n = 11), rhodovibrin (n = 12), and spirilloxanthin (n = 13). The molecules were studied in acetone and CS2 solvents at room temperature. These experiments explore the effect of solvent polarity and polarizability on the spectroscopic and kinetic behavior of the molecules. The molecules were also studied in ether/isopentane/ethanol (EPA) glasses at 77 K, in which the spectral resolution is greatly enhanced. Analysis of the data using global fitting techniques has revealed the ultrafast dynamics of the excited states and spectral changes associated with their decay, including spectroscopic features not previously reported. The data are consistent with S* being identified with a twisted conformational structure, the yield of which is increased in molecules having longer pi-electron conjugations. In particular, for the longest molecule in the series, spirilloxanthin, the experiments and a detailed quantum computational analysis reveal the presence of two S* states associated with relaxed S1 (2(1)Ag-) conformations involving nearly planar 6-s-cis and 6-s-trans geometries. We propose that in polar solvents, the ground state of spirilloxanthin takes on a corkscrew conformation that generates a net solute dipole moment while decreasing the cavity formation energy. Upon excitation and relaxation into the S1 (2(1)Ag-) state, the polyene unravels and flattens into a more planar geometry with comparable populations of 6-s-trans and 6-s-cis conformations.

Symmetry control of radiative decay in linear polyenes: low barriers for isomerization in the S1 state of hexadecaheptaene

The room temperature absorption and emission spectra of the 4-cis and all-trans isomers of 2,4,6,8,10,12,14-hexadecaheptaene are almost identical, exhibiting the characteristic dual emissions S1-->S0 (21Ag- --> 11Ag-) and S2-->S0 (11Bu+ --> 11Ag-) noted in previous studies of intermediate length polyenes and carotenoids. The ratio of the S1-->S0 and S2-->S0 emission yields for the cis isomer increases by a factor of approximately 15 upon cooling to 77 K in n-pentadecane. In contrast, for the trans isomer this ratio shows a 2-fold decrease with decreasing temperature. These results suggest a low barrier for conversion between the 4-cis and all-trans isomers in the S1 state. At 77 K, the cis isomer cannot convert to the more stable all-trans isomer in the 21Ag- state, resulting in the striking increase in its S1-->S0 fluorescence. These experiments imply that the S1 states of longer polyenes have local energy minima, corresponding to a range of conformations and isomers, separated by relatively low (2-4 kcal) barriers. Steady state and time-resolved optical measurements on the S1 states in solution thus may sample a distribution of conformers and geometric isomers, even for samples represented by a single, dominant ground state structure. Complex S1 potential energy surfaces may help explain the complicated S2-->S1 relaxation kinetics of many carotenoids. The finding that fluorescence from linear polyenes is so strongly dependent on molecular symmetry requires a reevaluation of the literature on the radiative properties of all-trans polyenes and carotenoids.

Investigation of the S1/ICT → S0 Internal Conversion Lifetime of 4‘-apo-β-caroten-4‘-al and 8‘-apo-β-caroten-8‘-al: Dependence on Conjugation Length and Solvent Polarity

The ultrafast internal conversion (IC) dynamics of aldehyde-substituted apocarotenoids (n'-apo-beta-caroten-n'-als with n=4, 8 and 12) have been investigated in a systematic variation of conjugation length and solvent polarity using time-resolved femtosecond transient absorption spectroscopy. After excitation to the S2 state with different excess energies, the subsequent intramolecular dynamics were investigated at several probe wavelengths covering the S0-->S2 and S1/ICT-->Sn absorption bands. Time constants tau1 for the internal conversion process S1/ICT-->S0 of 4'-apo-beta-caroten-4'-al and 8'-apo-beta-caroten-8'-al have been newly measured. We compared these results with our earlier measurements for 12'-apo-beta-caroten-12'-al (D.A. Wild, K. Winkler, S. Stalke, K. Oum, T. Lenzer Phys. Chem. Chem. Phys. 2006, 8, 2499). In the case of the aldehyde with the longest conjugation (4'-apo-beta-caroten-4'-al), tau1 is almost independent of solvent polarity (4-5 ps), whereas a significant reduction of tau1 from 22.7 to 8.6 ps for the shorter 8'-apo-beta-caroten-8'-al and an even more pronounced reduction from 220 to 8.0 ps for 12'-apo-beta-caroten-12'-al were observed when the solvent medium was changed from n-hexane to methanol, respectively. In n-hexane, tau1 of the apocarotenals is strongly dependent on the conjugation length and this can be well understood in terms of an energy gap law description where the S1-S0 energy differences were estimated from their steady-state fluorescence spectra. In highly polar solvents, the IC to S0 is very fast, irrespective of the conjugation length. This is probably due to the stabilization of an intramolecular charge transfer (ICT) state in 12'-apo-beta-caroten-12'-al and 8'-apo-beta-caroten-8'-al. In the case of 4'-apo-beta-caroten-4'-al, such an influence of an ICT state is presumably less important than for the other two apocarotenals.

Femtosecond Time-Resolved Transient Absorption Spectroscopy of Xanthophylls

Xanthophylls are a major class of photosynthetic pigments that participate in an adaptation mechanism by which higher plants protect themselves from high light stress. In the present work, an ultrafast time-resolved spectroscopic investigation of all the major xanthophyll pigments from spinach has been performed. The molecules are zeaxanthin, lutein, violaxanthin, and neoxanthin. beta-Carotene was also studied. The experimental data reveal the inherent spectral properties and ultrafast dynamics including the S(1) state lifetimes of each of the pigments. In conjunction with quantum mechanical computations the results address the molecular features of xanthophylls that control the formation and decay of the S* state in solution. The findings provide compelling evidence that S* is an excited state with a conformational geometry twisted relative to the ground state. The data indicate that S* is formed via a branched pathway from higher excited singlet states and that its yield depends critically on the presence of beta-ionylidene rings in the polyene system of pi-electron conjugated double bonds. The data are expected to be beneficial to researchers employing ultrafast time-resolved spectroscopic methods to investigate the mechanisms of both energy transfer and nonphotochemical quenching in higher plant preparations.

Use of ultrafast dispersed pump-dump-probe and pump-repump-probe spectroscopies to explore the light-induced dynamics of peridinin in solution

Optical pump-induced dynamics of the highly asymmetric carotenoid peridinin in methanol was studied by dispersed pump-probe, pump-dump-probe, and pump-repump-probe transient absorption spectroscopy in the visible region. Dispersed pump-probe measurements show that the decay of the initially excited S2 state populates two excited states, the S1 and the intramolecular charge-transfer (ICT) state, at a ratio determined by the excitation wavelength. The ensuing spectral evolution occurs on the time scale of a few picoseconds and suggests the equilibration of these states. Dumping the stimulated emission of the ICT state with an additional 800-nm pulse after 400- and 530-nm excitation preferentially removes the ICT state contribution from the broad excited-state absorption, allowing for its spectral characterization. At the same time, an unrelaxed ground-state species, which has a subpicosecond lifetime, is populated. The application of the 800-nm pulse at early times, when the S2 state is still populated, led to direct generation of the peridinin cation, observed for the first time in a transient absorption experiment. The excited and ground electronic states manifold of peridinin has been reconstructed using target analysis; this approach combined with the measured multipulse spectroscopic data allows us to estimate the spectra and time scales of the corresponding transient states.

Excited-State Dynamics of Carotenoids in Light-Harvesting Complexes. 1. Exploring the Relationship between the S1 and S* States

Dispersed transient absorption spectra collected at variable excitation intensities in combination with time-resolved signals were used to explore the underlying connectivity of the electronic excited-state manifold of the carotenoid rhodopin glucoside in the light-harvesting 2 complex isolated from Rhodopseudomonas acidophila. We find that the S state, which was recently identified as an excited state in carotenoids bound in bacterial light-harvesting complexes, exhibits a different response to the increase of excitation intensity than the S(1) state, which suggests that the models used so far to describe the excited states of carotenoids are incomplete. We propose two new models that can describe both the time-resolved and the intensity-dependent data; the first postulates that S(1) and S* are not populated in parallel after the decay of the initially excited S(2) state but instead result from the excitation of distinct ground-state subpopulations. The second model introduces a resonantly enhanced light-induced transition during excitation, which promotes population to higher-lying excited states that favors the formation of S* over S(1). Multiwavelength target analysis of the time-resolved and excitation-intensity dependence measurements were used to characterize the involved states and their responses. We show that both proposed models adequately fit the measured data, although it is not possible to determine which model is most apt. The physical origins and implications of both models are explored.

Extremely strong solvent dependence of the S1→ S0internal conversion lifetime of 12′-apo-β-caroten-12′-al

The ultrafast internal conversion (IC) dynamics of the carbonyl carotenoid 12'-apo-beta-caroten-12'-al has been investigated in solvents of varying polarity using time-resolved femtosecond transient absorption spectroscopy. The molecules were excited to the S(2) state by a pump beam of either 390 or 470 nm. The subsequent intramolecular dynamics were detected at several probe wavelengths covering the S(0)--> S(2) and S(1)--> S(n) bands. For the S(1)--> S(0) internal conversion process, a remarkably strong acceleration with increasing polarity was found, e.g., lifetimes of tau(1) = 220 ps (n-hexane), 91 ps (tetrahydrofuran) and 8.0 ps (methanol) after excitation at 390 nm. The observation can be rationalized by the formation of a combined S(1)/ICT (intramolecular charge transfer) state in the more polar solvents. The effect is even stronger than the strongest one reported so far in the literature for peridinin. Addition of lithium salts to a solution of 12'-apo-beta-caroten-12'-al in ethanol leads only to small changes of the IC time constant tau(1). In addition, we estimate an upper limit for the time constant tau(2) of the S(2)--> S(1) internal conversion process of 300 fs in all solvents.

Transient Lens Spectroscopy of Ultrafast Internal Conversion Processes in Citranaxanthin

The ultrafast internal conversion (IC) dynamics of the apocarotenoid citranaxanthin have been studied for the first time by means of two-color transient lens (TL) pump-probe spectroscopy. After excitation into the high-energy edge of the S2 band by a pump pulse at 400 nm, the subsequent intramolecular processes were probed at 800 nm. Experiments were performed in a variety of solvents at room temperature. Upper limits for the S2 lifetime tau2 on the order of 100-200 fs are estimated. The S1 lifetime tau1 varies only slightly between solvents (10-12 ps), and the only clear decrease is observed for methanol (8.5 ps). The findings are consistent with earlier results from transient absorption studies of other apocarotenoids and carotenoid ketones and transient lens experiments of C40 carbonyl carotenoids. Possible reasons for the observed weak solvent dependence of tau1 for citranaxanthin are discussed.
